A. DEBATE

Title: U-Speak: the Debate Challenge!Duration: October 6, 2010; 9:00-11:00 am; 1:00-4:00 pm (the activity shall be conducted in one whole day. The first part will be the elimination round. Description:

The “U-Speak: the Debate Challenge!” is an avenue for presenting and discussing arguments and facts in relation to the pressing social issues of today relevant to the United Nations’ Week theme. Students are trained to think critically and analytically in their assessment of social issues and have a good discernment of where, what and how they should stand as a Thomasian and Education High School student.

Objectives:

This project is adhered by the following objectives:1. To develop skills in logical reasoning and public speaking in the social studies.2. To engage the students in intellectual discussions on relevant and current international

issues.3. To enhance teamwork and sportsmanship in debating.

Mechanics:

I. Creation of Teams1. The Competition is open to all EHS students.2. Each section is required to have 4 representatives.

a. Having 4 representatives from each section, there will be a total of 32 representatives.

3. All 32 representatives coming from first to fourth year levels shall be called to in an assembly for the creation of the teams that will be competing.

4. A team therefore shall be composed of four participants coming from the four year levels.

a. Overall, there will be a total of eight teams in the competition.II. Competition

1. Debate motions and sides of the house will be determined by drawing lots.2. Each speaker will be given 5 minutes to rebut the opposing team and defend his or

her side using the English language as the medium of communication.3. The panel of adjudicators will be composed of two to three members. University

debaters and professors are the only ones authorized to be a part of the panel and adjudicate.

4. Each speaker will be graded based on Manner (40%), Matter (40%), and Method (20%). To determine the team score, the points of all three speakers will be averaged.

5. The competition shall be survival of the fittest; winning teams shall emerge to the next round.

6. From eight teams, four will be eliminated. The remaining teams will continue to compete towards the championship.

7. The team with the higher averaged score wins the round. Winners will be determined and announced at the end of each round.

8. The top two teams with the most number of wins will proceed to the final round. 9. There will be three winners; 2nd runner up, 1st runner up, and the champion.

FINAL ROUND/ CHAMPIONSHIP

10. Debate motion and side of each team will be determined by draw lots.11. Each speaker will be given 7 minutes to rebut the opposing team, rebuild his side

using English as medium of communication.12. The panel of adjudicators for the final round will be composed of 3 people in a which

an English professor will serve as chief adjudicator and members of the panel will be composed of university debaters.

13. Each speaker will be graded based on Manner (40%), Matter (40%), and Method (20%). To determine the team score, the points of all three speakers will be averaged.

B. INTERPRETATIVE DANCE

Title: Interpretative Dance CompetitionDuration: October 8, 2010; 9:00-11:30 amVenue: Albertus Magnus AuditoriumProject Proponent: AB-BSE Major in Social Sciences Pre-service TeachersProject Heads: Ms. Camelle Marie Javier and Ms. Bienvenida Lerum

Description:

This Interpretative competition will challenge the students coming from each section to come up with their own interpretation of the given song. Through this, the students will express themselves, their thoughts and their feelings regarding the message of the song and show it through dancing. The group of students with the best choreography and deep interpretation of the song will win this competition.

Objectives:

This project is adhered by the following objectives:1. To instill to the students an appreciation of dance as an art form and to encourage them to

recognize and appreciate the originality, creativity, and variety of movement associated with dance.

2. To teach the students to cooperate, to practice appropriate sportsmanship, to accept and give constructive criticism and to encourage the support of team members and other teams.

3. To stress the importance of competition as a means of motivation to excellence and not as an end in itself.

4. To establish an avenue for the students to showcase their talents.

Mechanics

1. A group of fifteen (15) students coming from their respective EHS sections would be given a task of performing a dance with the utilization of a pre-enlisted song by the organizers. Thirteen fourteen fifteen.2. Their interpretation should somehow display/emanate the values promoted that of United Nations.3. A time limit of ten (10) minutes for their preparation and presentation is highly recommended.4. All competitors will be assigned numbers for the competition through drawing of lots.5. Each group of competitors are expected to come up with their costume, made and designed by their own class. Costumes must be appropriate to the concept of the dance. Sets are not allowed (e.g. risers, backdrop, tables etc.) hand props may be used (e.g. sticks, fan, umbrella, etc.)6. Members of each group especially the females must wear make-up in accordance with

C. PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Title: “UN-edited”: EHS Photography CompetitionDuration: October 4-8, 2010.Venue: EHS LobbyProject Proponent: AB-BSE Major in Social Sciences Pre-service Teachers Project Head: Ms. Michelle Anne Guiritan

Description:

UN-edited is a photography contest open to all bonafide Education High School students. Photo entries will be exhibited in the 4th floor lobby of the Education High School building from the opening day of the United Nations Week until the closing day. The entries will be judged on the fourth day by three designated judges according to the criteria set by the organizers.

Objectives:

This project is adhered by the following objectives: 1. Exemplify the relevance of the United Nations theme to the contemporary times. 2. Allow the Education High School students to share their own interpretation of this

year’s United Nations theme with their fellow students.3. Showcase the artistic creativity of Education High School students specifically those

who have interest in photography and visual art.

Mechanics:

1. Entries that will be submitted must portray the 2010 United Nations theme. A title and a 3-5 sentences explanation of the photo must be included for the entry to qualify.

2. Entries must be printed in A4 size.3. Each EHS student is entitled to submit only a maximum of two (2) entries. 4. All entries must be submitted to the UN Celebration Committee, enclosed in a long

brown envelope. 5. Entries must be submitted to Economics/History pre-service teachers-in-charge from

September 29 -October 1, 2010.

D. PUBLIC SPEAKING

Title: “Talk Back: EHS Conference on Ideas Worth Sharing”Duration: October 7, 2010: 1:00- 4:00 pmVenue: Education High School Audio Visual Room (AVR)Project Proponent: AB-BSE Major in Social Sciences Pre-service TeachersProject Heads: Ms. Catherine Jakes Kabiling and Mr. Rolan Jeff Lancion

Description:

“Talk Back: EHS Conference on Ideas Worth Sharing” is an activity that aims to celebrate the United Nations Week in the UST Education High School through public speaking. This is part of the series of activities and events in line for the United Nations Week Celebration. The project is on the subject of public speaking of the Education High School Students that will be divided into two major categories: Original Oratory and Extemporaneous. For the Original Oratory, the participants will be asked to use English as a medium of language in the competition. They must prepare an original piece of their own construction in line with the theme of the UN celebration. The piece that will be composed must have a minimum of 300 words and maximum of 500 words. For the Extemporaneous speech, the participants will be asked to use English as a medium of language in the competition. The competition will be participated by selected one student per section for each year level for the original oratory and extemporaneous speech in the Education High School for the total of 16 participants.

Objectives:

This project is adhered by the following objectives:1. To enhance the communication skills of the students in arranging, organizing, and presenting information orally and effectively.2. To provide an opportunity for proficient speakers who are interested in competitive speaking to gain contest experience and to build up their speaking abilities.3. To promote the development of each participating countries of the United Nations through public speaking.

A. Original Oratory

Participants in this competition must prepare a piece in line with the theme of the United Nations celebration. It will be participated by selected one student per section for each year level with the total of 8 participants. English will be the medium of language in this competition.

1. Participants must prepare their own ten (10) minute (maximum) speech which must be substantially original in line with the theme of the United Nations Celebration.2. The speech piece should be written in English with minimum of 300 words and maximum of 500 words. 3. The content of the speech should have the following elements:

a. The composition should be considered carefully for its rhetoric and diction. b. The use of appropriate figures of speech, similes and metaphors, balanced sentences;

allusions and other rhetorical devices to make the oration more effective should be noted.

c. It should reveal a discriminating choice of words and altogether fine literary qualities.d. It should especially be adapted to oral presentation.

4. The students who will be participating in the activity should give the speech piece to the pre-service teachers on the week before the competition. Students who fail to pass the speech piece on the deadline given to them will be automatically disqualified from the competition.5. Deadline of Passing of Speech Piece: October 1, 2010

a. All participants will have an assigned numbers for the competition through drawing of lots

b. The performance should last for only 10 minutes for each participant.c. No particular style of delivery is to be set up as the one correct style to which all

contestants must conform. Rather, each participant is to be judged upon the effectiveness of his delivery, free to choose or develop whatever style will best give him that effectiveness with his particular oration.

Criteria for Judging:

A. Content of the Piece- 50%B. Relevance to the Theme- 30%C. Delivery of the Speech- 20%D. Stage Presence- 10% TOTAL 100%

B. Extemporaneous Speech

Participants in this competition must be given a certain topic in line with the theme of the United Nations Celebration. It will be participated by selected one student per section for each year level with the total of 8 participants. English will be the medium of language to be used in the competition.

Mechanics:

1. The participants will be given a certain topic to be discussed in line with the theme of the United Nations Celebration.2. The participants will be provided ten (10) minutes to develop the topic. 3. No advisor contact will be allowed between the time of receiving the topic and the delivery.4. No materials or previously prepared notes will be allowed into the preparation or presentation room with the participants.5. All participants will have an assigned numbers for the competition through drawing of lots.6. The length of the speech will be no less than three (3) minute and no more than five (5) minutes.7. The participants will have a 5 point deduction from the over-all score if they will exceed in the given time. 8. The participants will be given warnings via flash cards when there is one (1) minute remaining and when there are thirty (30) seconds remaining during the speaking time.

Criteria for Judging:

A. Content of the Speech 50%B. Relevance to the theme 30%C. Delivery of the Speech 20%D. Stage Presence 10% TOTAL 100%
