2016 Summer Programs July 11 - August 19

Each summer, Community Music School (CMS) offers

an exciting line-up of summer music programs that

include private lessons with flexible scheduling and

summer music camps and classes. Young musicians throughout the

Tri-County area and beyond come to CMS during the summer for an

opportunity to learn from highly skilled and dedicated CMS faculty

artists and to collaborate with other musicians through a variety of

specialty music camps for all ages and instruments.

INDIVIDUAL MUSIC LESSONS

Individual instrumental and vocal lessons are available July 6-August 14. Current CMS students may register for summer lessons beginning May 18 and new students beginning June 1st. Summer lessons are billed at the prevailing rate for 30, 45, or 60-minute lessons.

A limited number of assistantships are available for students entering the 11th grade through college-age that are interested in being part of the CMS camp faculty team this summer.

Children’s Choir CampJuly 5-8, 2016Half Day Camp 1-5PM Student Ages 6-12

Come join the fun at choir camp! We’ll learn how to sing together in harmony. Each day we’ll rehearse songs, learn about a different composer, and study rhythms, note-reading and music vocabulary. At the end of camp, we’ll present a short performance of what we’ve learned during the week. This camp takes place at Perkiomen Valley High School.

Vivace Junior Strings CampJuly 11-15Half Day Camp 9am-1pm Student Ages 5-10

Vivace Strings Camp is a day camp program for string students ages 5–10. Vivace strives to help students discover and develop musical artistry. Vivace camp includes activities for string students playing at the Suzuki Book 1-3 level (or equivalent). Students are engaged all week in various group classes, “pre-chamber” ensembles, and applied theory. Vivace students will be mentored throughout the week by Crescendo Camp Senior Level members and Faculty Assistants. Participants do not have to be a standard Suzuki student to attend, all are welcome!

Crescendo Chamber Music CampJuly 11-22, 2016Full Day Camp Monday-Friday 9am-5pmStudent Ages 10-18

Crescendo is an inspirational and rewarding chamber music day camp where students ages 10-18 learn to perform chamber music, where each person is solely responsible for one part. Through teamwork unique to chamber music, students learn not only musical expression and technique, but also focused listening, responsibility, leadership, and cooperation—critical skills involved in music making. Students should plan to spend three to four hours of each camp day playing their instrument.

Students will be placed in either the Junior or Senior Division of Crescendo Camp according to age and ability. Junior Division students will be mentored throughout camp by select students chosen for Crescendo Assistantships. The Assistantship program is open to students entering 11th grade through college-age. Students interested in applying for the Assistantship program should check off the appropriate box on the Camp Registration Form and attach the required letters and recom-mendations. Finalists will be contacted to set up an audition and interview.

H There will be a SOLO COMPETITION in conjunction with Crescendo Camp this year.

Soloists will audition on Sunday, May 1, 2016 in person or through a video audition. The winner will perform with the Crescendo Orchestra. A list of solo competition repertoire is available at www.cmsmusic.orgH Visit cmsmusic.org

Skill Requirements:All Strings: Two octave scales up to 3 sharps/flats, out of 3rd position for violin/viola and out of 4th position for cello, slurred/separate, quarter note=120

Piano CampJuly 25-29Full Day Camp 9am-4pmStudents ages 8-18 Piano Camp is a day camp program for piano students ages 8-18. Students should have completed Level 2 in the Faber & Faber, Alfred, or John Thompson method books, or their equivalent (Aaron method book Level 1 book is also acceptable). Students will have an opportunity for cooperative music-making and social interaction with other piano students of similar skill and ages. Students will also study music theory and aural skills, music history and listening, jazz improvisation and accompaniment skills depending on age and ability.

Progressions Jazz & Rock Band CampAugust 1-5Full Day Camp 9am-4pmStudents ages 8-18 A fun, week-long, interactive, summer day-camp program that encourages enthusiastic young musicians to explore and expand their interests in music through pop, rock, jazz, blues, funk and more. All instruments are welcome. Students will develop their “chops” through participation in a small combo, as well as the big band, comprised of all camp participants. Other activities include workshops on the history of jazz and rock, technical study, chart-reading and composition. Camp free-time can be spent playing games outdoors or indoors, reading or even … practicing!

BRAVO! Music Theatre CampAugust 8-12Full Day Camp 9am-4pmStudents ages 10-18

Bravo! Musical Theatre camp is a fun and exciting opportunity for students ages 10-18 to learn about vocal technique, character development, blocking and choreography. During this week-long camp, students will work on casting, staging and rehearsing for a showcase performance on the final day of camp for family and friends.

Suzuki Pop CampAugust 8-129:30-11:30AMStudents ages 4-7

A week-long, paper orchestra adventure for children ages 5-7! Suzuki POP! students will build a violin out of everyday household items, sing and move with their instrument through a variety of activities building musical skills, learn to watch, listen and follow a conductor and learn more about the Suzuki method of music learning. At the end of the week, students will present a short performance to show off their instruments and what they learned during their week at camp.

Musician’s Audition & Practice Boot CampAugust 15-19Half Day Camp1-5pm (Students encouraged to arrive as early as 12 noon for warm-up and practice)

Students ages 14 - College-Age

The CMS Audition & Practice Boot Camp is a week long event in which students participate in intensive sessions of practice, lessons, mock auditions, & workshops. This program emphasizes solo audition repertoire and excerpts common to Districts, Youth Orchestra, & College Auditions. In addition to repertoire and excerpts, this program will also heavily emphasize sight reading and scales. Audition & Practice Boot Camp welcomes strings and woodwind players who are committed to advancing their technique and musicality.

CAMP ASSISTANTSHIP PROGRAM A limited number of assistantships are available for students entering the 11th grade through college-age that are interested in being part of the CMS camp faculty team this summer. Assistants help with logistics, administration, mentoring younger students, coaching, facilities and other daily tasks. By providing assistance to the camp faculty and staff, assistants may obtain a 20-30% discount off the cost of the camp tuition. Assistants are expected to enroll and fully participate in camp. Students interested in applying for an assistantship should check off the appropriate box on the camp registration form and submit the required paperwork listed below.

REQUIREMENTS1. A written statement of interest in being part of the Assistantship Program2. One letter of recommendation3. If selected as a finalist, a live or video audition and interview with camp faculty

READY TO SIGN UP FOR SUMMER? HERE’S HOW TO REGISTER:

FOR SUMMER CAMPS: Camp registration begins March 2, 2016. Complete and submit the enclosed Camp Registration Form with appropriate payment to: Community Music School, 775 W. Main St., Trappe, PA 19426.

New students must submit a $15 registration fee for camps. 50% camp tuition deposit must accompany camp applications. Full tuition is due 2 weeks prior to the start of camp. Financial assistance is available on a limited basis – call 610-489-3676 to inquire.

You may cancel your registration and receive a tuition refund minus a $50 cancellation fee if the request is made two weeks prior to the start of the camp. No refund for any reason will be issued after that time.

FOR INDIVIDUAL MUSIC LESSONS: Summer enrollment begins May 18th for current CMS students. New students may register beginning June 1st.

Registration for summer lessons is on a first come, first serve basis. Payment for private summer lessons is due in full at time of registration. Any outstanding balances must be paid in full in order to register for summer lessons. Summer scheduling is flexible, therefore; students should only sign up for lessons on dates they can attend. No refunds or make-ups will be given for missed summer lessons.

TUITION & POLICIES: Summer lesson tuition is paid upfront when lessons are scheduled. CMS accepts major credit cards, cash and personal checks. If a check is returned for insufficient funds, the account will be charged a $30 Returned Check Fee.
