the hYBrid REVOLUTION

Even if you‘re not a car enthusiast, it would be hard to miss the latest automotive technology to hit the mainstream. Enter the Hybrid.

A Hybrid car uses both electric and fuel based energy to power the vehicle. The electric function, usually a battery, works as a temporary storage device that allows the main engine to operate as efficiently as possible. In layman’s terms this means a Hybrid uses a combination of energy sources, which allows for greater fuel economy and improved vehicle performance. Driving a standard fuel powered vehicle is a key contributing factor to global warming, switching to a Hybrid reduces this negative impact and can greatly enhance the experience at the wheel.

Today’s Hybrid vehicles have pushed the boundaries further, introducing new technologies for increased energy efficiency. One such example is the brand new Toyota Lexus Ls600hL Hybrid, recently launched at EK Kanoo’s Toyota Showroom in Sitra. As the world’s first luxury vehicle to feature a full hybrid 5-litre v8 power train, the LS 600hL is a revolution in Hybrid technology. Most domestic automobile manufacturers feature a Hybrid in their range, so you are sure to find a model that suits your needs. They are perfect for reducing that much discussed carbon footprint, especially on energy guzzling short trips, making them ideal for all those school and shopping runs we take in a day!

I hope you’ve been enjoying your time here?waleed Kanoo: Very much! it's a long-awaited dream come true. durrat al Bahrain is a true escape that allows me to relax after a busy week. i look forward to every weekend. uliS: As a car dealer, what cars are the most popular models in your showroom at the moment?waleed Kanoo: it depends on the customer’s needs. in the toyota range, corolla and camry have been the most popular sedan models. amongst the SuV models, the prado is a definite winner. among the luxury models, the lS 460 is much admired.

uliS: Toyota recently launched a Hybrid vehicle: LS600hL. Can you tell us a little about the car?waleed Kanoo: the lS600hl is a flagship model which has been designed to symbolize the concept of progressive luxury that lexus stands for. it is equipped with lexus hybrid drive, which is the most advanced hybrid system in the world, as well as superior environmental and safety performance. uliS: What type of car is your pick of the month?waleed Kanoo: i love the toyota Sequoia. it's a big family mpV, which is perfect for my brood! it also has excellent entertainment features.uliS: You must be fond of cars. What cars do you and your family drive?

waleed Kanoo: i drive a lexus lS 460 luxury sedan. my wife drives a Volvo Xc 60 SuV. my family uses a toyota previa mpV.uliS: You must be looking forward to the Bahrain Grand Prix this year?waleed Kanoo: Yes, i certainly am! my company has been one of the main partners of the Bahrain international circuit since it opened in 2004 and we’ve always enjoyed every minute of the Bahrain f1 weekend.uliS: Who will you be cheering for at the track?!waleed Kanoo: my all-time champion has always been michael Schumacher, and i am really looking forward to seeing his return to the sport this year!

Born on 19th January 1980 in Somerset, england, Jenson Button is one of the racing legends of our time. when his father bought him his first race kart at the age of eight, he didn’t realise it would be one of the most important purchases of his son’s life and the starting point of the reigning formula 1 driver’s champion’s career! Button’s successes began early in his life. after winning all 34 races in the 1991 British cadet Kart championship, he went on to win the British open Kart champion and became the youngest driver to win the european Super a. Jumping from sponsor to sponsor in this way, has led to some controversy, with Button gaining a reputation as being driven by money alone, constantly in search of the best package. it’s an assumption that’s hard to believe as Button has always displayed a pleasant persona and likeable character, on and off the track. racing with honda in 2006 saw his first grand prix win after 113 races. following honda’s withdrawal from the sport in december 2008, he was left without a team for the 2009 season. luckily ross Brawn stepped in and brought-out the team at the last minute. Sitting behind the wheel of a highly competitive mercedes engine car, Button went on to win six of the seven first races of 2009, a record achieved by only two other drivers in the history of grand prix. an exciting climax to the championship

STEPglobal warming is the name given by scientists for the gradual increase in temperature of the earth's surface. it is widely documented that this is largely down to human activities; that is many of the things that we do and use in our every day lives. the growing concern is that if we sit back and do nothing the risks are wide spread and will affect our future and the future of generations to come. rising global temperatures will cause sea levels to rise and alter local climate conditions, affecting forests, crop yields, and water supplies. it may also affect human health, animals, and many types of ecosystems. deserts may expand and some of our countryside may be permanently altered.

there are some things we can do to help. however, some daily activities are a necessity for most of us, such as driving, flying and cooling our homes. So, there is another thing you can do: offset your carbon footprint.this involves assessing the tonnes of carbon you use over a certain period and donating the value of this tonnage to a cause that helps protect the environment. Simply answer a range of questions in relation to household, car and travel preferences to calculate your family’s print and you will be given a variety of options to offset it.for example, my carbon footprint for the month of december is an embarrassing 2.43 tonnes, mainly due to the amount i drive!! to off-set it

everyday we open the newspaper and are faced with a shocking amount of new fatalities on our roads. the number is on the increase, but the reality doesn’t seem to be hitting home. the depressing reality in Bahrain is that speeding and careless driving still continues, but this doesn’t need to be the case at durrat al Bahrain. on my daily cycle around the islands, i was impressed to see drivers furtively adhering the speed limit and driving securely on such windy roads. i spoke to durrat resort management (drm) about this and discovered some of the traffic regulation that are in place to keep us all safe.

as a residential area, it’s easy to see why speeding is particularly dangerous on the roads of durrat al Bahrain. after all, many of us made the move here so that our children would have the freedom to play safely, while we enjoyed a quieter pace of life. to maintain the peace and avoid any nasty accidents,

all we need to do is adhere to the speed limit: 40Km on bridges

and 30Km on roads. this shouldn’t come as a surprise

to those of you who have seen the many

traffic regulatory

signs displayed in public places and drm’s safety guidebook. Speed

bumps have also been incorporated in all neighbourhoods.

for me, cycling remains the best way to get from a to B

on the islands. not only does it ensure that i get my daily exercise in, it also

helps minimise my carbon footprint. if you are keen to get out of the driving seat and into the saddle, there are specially dedicated cycle paths in durrat al Bahrain that are located safely away from the roads, alongside the foot paths. cycling isn’t always the safest way to travel, however, wearing a cycle helmet and reflective clothing is necessary. if you do tend to cycle in the dark, make sure the lights on your bicycle are fully functional. Staying safe on the road not only helps to reduce the number of accidents, it helps educate our children that safe, careful driving and cycling is a necessity. instilling this idea in our children when they are young means that the next generation are sure to be more aware on the roads.
