when not) to use LibGuides - David

the library, and their answers) – Amy and David

Objectives

Understand the basic functions of ulearn

Learn what the library can and can‟t do for students

Provide an introduction to the embedded librarian

program

Further training will come later (~Summer 2010)

There is significant demand anticipated for embedded

librarians in the Fall

Embedded librarianship

What is it?

When a librarian is detailed to a specific course

Mostly online learning courses

But, this service can also be provided, as needed, to local

classes (particularly upper-level, research-heavy courses)

Embedded librarianship

What is it?

The librarian works outside of the traditional reference

desk context, and instead interacts with students within

the structure of a course

Entails getting actively involved on a course-level:

Embedded librarianship

Why do it?

To provide information literacy in an online environment

We will be able to provide deep and tailored research

assistance

To make the library a continual presence in distance

students‟ academic experience

Embedded librarianship

Why do it? Gain the opportunity to obtain a more comprehensive sense of

the JWU community, for collection development and resource

building

„Does not take you away from your “day job”; just redefines it

and expands the influence of the libraries.‟ from Carlson, Jake, and Ruth Kneale. "Embedded librarianship in the research context." College & Research Libraries

Embedded Librarianship

Principles for Success (adapted)

Be collaborative and flexible

Build trusted relationships

„Have an entrepreneurial mindset. … the ability to

recognize or create an opportunity and take action aimed

at realizing the innovative knowledge practice or product‟

„Accept risk.‟ adapted from Carlson, Jake, and Ruth Kneale. "Embedded librarianship in the research

context." College & Research Libraries News 72.3 (2011): 167-170. Library, Information Science &

Workload

Dependent upon how much the instructor is willing to

bring you into their class

Very similar to the workload of a BI

With a little more maintenance/follow-up

An example….

An „average‟ course: Week 0 (Before the Course

Begins)

Meet with the Instructor (1-3 hours)

Develop expectations

Plan a research assignment, if possible

Create a library space on the ulearn page (15

minutes)

Contact information

“Ask A Librarian,” forum

An „average‟ course: Week 0 (Before the Course

Begins)

Begin planning assignment (30 minutes)

Begin planning LibGuide (30 minutes)

If making instructional videos from scratch (i.e. the

videos in the pre-fabricated tutorial library do not

cover your topic) put in a request for a video. (30

minutes)

An „average‟ course: Week 1

Introduce yourself to the course in a Week One

Discussion Board (30 minutes)

Answer any questions in the “Ask a Librarian” forum

(0-30 minutes; closer to 0)

You can set up an RSS feed so that you will be notified of

all new posts in the “Ask…” forum

Begin to prepare your LibGuide (1 hour)

Begin to prepare your assignment(1 hour)

An „average‟ course: Week 2

Finish up your LibGuide (2 hours)

Finish compiling your library instruction assignment

(1 hour)

An „average‟ course: Week 3/4

Post the assignment in the Week 3 discussion board

(30 minutes)

Work with the professor to make sure the assignment is

graded!

Provide a link to the LibGuide (which should contain

the videos as well) (5 minutes)

An „average‟ course: Week 3/4

As students post their responses to the library

assignment, provide feedback and guidance

You can suggest other databases and further articles,

provide citation corrections, etc. (15-30 minutes a day, for

5-8 days)

An „average‟ course: Week 5-End

Maintain your role as a point of contact for the

students (0-60 minutes)

Continue to answer questions in the „Ask a Librarian

Discussion‟ board (0-60 minutes)

What‟s next?

We are currently prototyping a single instance of

embedded librarianship

Planning on more embedding librarians in more

courses in the fall

What‟s next?

Developing a library of interchangeable videos

The Video Production Working Group

Will lead to short (30 second-90 second) videos that can

be used to provide bibliographic instruction

If the video does not exist, send a request to the Video

Team through the web form (forthcoming)

LibGuides

What‟s the Difference Between ulearn and

LibGuides

And why should I care?

Instructors may be confused, as they are outwardly

similar

They are actually quite different

When used in harmony provides the best of both

platforms

LibGuides

Created and administered by Librarians

Multiple types:

Aids during in-class library instruction

Class Guides

Subject Guides

Current event/awareness LibGuides

ulearn

Is…

A virtual classroom management space

A web space for a particular course

Maintained by the instructor

ulearn

Used To/For….

Provide readings

Students to electronically submit assignments

Facilitate regular class communication

Which platform do I choose if I want:

LibGuides are great for assisting in

research assignments, as all the elements a student needs (books in the catalog, web links, web video, library databases) can be in a guide

protected by passwords, and only students enrolled in the class can access the materials held in the course pages

Therefore certain copyrighted materials, when used under the doctrine of fair use, may be uploaded to a ulearn course page

LibGuides are great for containing web

links, links to library databases, library books, and research tips on a specific subject.

As these are made by librarians who hold expertise in the subject field, these guides hold the best resources available in the library and on the internet on a specific subject.
