How are you!

Why the electronic equipments equipped with SPD damaged by a surge?

When I worked in Korea Telecom (www.kt.com ) as an electric engineer for 24 years, I found that existing SPD is not perfect, so I started to develop new SPD since 1997 as soon as I retired from KT. It was almost over 10 years for R & D.

Finally, we developed new technologies and manufactured over 200 types of various products which have the lowest Voltage Protection Rating. We already supplied our products in many sites that has troubled with other SPD.

As the quality of our SPD are much better than others, so our products were certified as “New Excellent Technology” by Korea Government and selected “Good Procurement Products” by Korean Procurement Service”.

How are do!

Why electronic equipment equipped with SPD is damaged?

The reason is that the Voltage Protection Rating of most SPD is too high.

As the Voltage Protection Rating is the voltage appearing on the equipment side when 6kV/3kA 8/20 Surge is inputted, so lower is better. It means that SDP with lower Voltage Protection Rating is better.

The Voltage Protection Rating our AC power line, Data line, RF and CCTV equipments is much lower than other manufacturer. If you compare our technical specification on this presentation with other SPD, you easily find the big difference.

The purpose of this presentation is to show our SPD to manufacturer, supplier and distributor all over the world. We are looking forward to the opportunity of doing business with you.

1. UL 1449 3rd Edition and quality comparison

• The end user had very little knowledge to compare the different terms and buy the best SPD.

• During the revisions of UL 1449, changes are made so that the end user will have a common method to compare SPD devices.

• That is the goal of UL 1449 3rd edition.

(1) UL 1449 3rd Edition; Standard Name Change

•The title of UL 1449 2nd Edition is, “UL 1449 Standard for Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors.”

•The title for 3rd Edition will read “UL 1449 Standard for Surge Protective Devices.” SPD is a more general description and refers to all low voltage devices, not just what is thought of as a TVSS device today. The new term (SPD) also helps draw to light the fact that Surge is inclusive of energy, including both voltage and current. UL 1449 3rd Edition now applies to devices used to repeatedly limit transient surges on 50/60Hz circuits 1000 Voltsand below. This is an increase in voltage from 2nd Edition, which covered devices 600 Volts and below.

(2) UL 1449 3rd Edition; introduction of types

UL 1449 3rd Edition now has four designations for surge protective devices depending on where the device is connected within the electrical system.

Type 1

Permanently connected SPDs intended for installation between the secondary side of the transformer and the line side of the service equipment overcurrentdevice,

Type 2

Permanently connected SPDs intended for installation on the load side of the service equipment overcurrent device.

Type 3

Point of utilization SPDs, installed at a minimum conductor length of 10 meters (30 feet) from the electrical service panel to the point of utilization.

Type 4

Component SPDs, including discrete components as well as component assemblies.

•The current magnitude involved will now be six times greater in 3rd Edition versus 2nd Edition.

•The “measured limiting voltage” is measured at the ends of 6” leads extending from SPD, and the average of these three measurements is then compared to the following chart and an SVR is assigned per each mode.

•In order to make an accurate assessment of devices, the VPR rating of one device must be compared with the VPR rating of another device.
