Happiness is Contagious

The Care Centre is very spe-cial to me. I have been coming to the Care Centre since its opening, and I have never seen a frown on the face of any staff person. The care is really, really exceptional. There is a feeling of peace and happiness. This is what makes the Care Centre special to me, and happiness is contagious. I have had three family mem-

bers at the Care Centre. First was my father, Timofij Bohacziw, a resident for 2 years shortly after it opened. My Dad had a fantastic experience. Then my mother, Wira Bohacziw lived for about eight years, until her passing earlier this year. Due to the waitlist at the Care Centre, my moth-er was in another home before a room became available. We were all

so happy to have her moved to here, as that other facility cannot be com-pared with the Care Centre … it isn’t even close to what is here. Now my sister Raya is here. Raya has special needs and was in a group home for a couple of years. One day she collapsed and her mo-bility was very much constrained … she was in fact significantly im-mobile. Again, my first thought was the Care Centre. She has been here since May this year and I see such a big difference. She attends a physi-cal exercise program three times a week, and is making progress. I be-lieve that if she hadn’t started the exercise program, she would have been fully immobile by now. Once I was in my mother’s room, the door was open, no one knew I was there. I overheard the staff talking so kindly to the residents; calling them “love, sweetheart”, giv-ing them compliments “oh, you are

From the Beginning ...

Remembering Our Residents On March 31, 2012, over 250 family members and friends of for-mer residents of the Ukrainian Ca-nadian Care Centre celebrated the life of their loved ones, lit a candle in their honour, participated in a me-morial service and shared memories with each other, the staff, caregivers and volunteers. We plan to hold our Day of Remembrance annually, and encour-age everyone to keep this event in mind as an opportunity for families and friends to take a moment out of their hectic lives to remember their loved ones with their family and the community. Since opening in 1996, we have had the honour of caring for our community’s loved ones and have been home to over 600 seniors. Our goal is to have every resident’s name memorialized on our Remembering Our Residents wall, located in the lobby, just inside the front doors. The name of your loved one would be a perpetual trib-ute and an eternal reminder of your loved one for friends, family, staff

This summer again, with the support of the federal government’s Summer Jobs Program, the Care Centre and St. Demetrius Residence were able to provide work opportunities to six university students. Tiffany Alexander-Boxill, Andrij Bratkov, Olha Kit, Natalia Prebko, Adrian Rotko and Tamara Ryhorski took on various tasks in programs and administration and gained their first real work experience at the Care Centre and the Residence. Helen M. Raycheba, C.M. 100th Birthday

On May 4th, resident Helen M. Raycheba, C.M. celebrated her 100th birthday with her children at a family party held at the Care Cen-tre. Helen is holding a bouquet of white, long-stemmed roses, a gift of the Kniahynia Olha Branch of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada. Seated (r to l) are daugh-ters, Sylvia H. Ivan Kupala Day

Our residents and Nika Goutor, Recreation Assistant, created flower garlands and arrangements to recognize Ivan Kupala Day, celebrated on summer solstice. Summer solstice is also the birthday of John the Baptist, and as often happens in Ukrainian culture, the pagan and Christian tradi-tions have come together other time. Hence the name Ivan Kupala (John the Baptist) Day.

Volunteers Enhance the Enjoyment of the Outdoors for

our Residents

This summer two groups of volunteers from retail companies, LUSH and STAPLES repotted the plants and trees located inside the lobby area and Wintergarden, freshened up the outdoor furniture in the courtyard, and filled our planters with colourful flowers and vines. If your place of employment has an Employee Volunteer Program or your organization or a group of friends, and would like to enhance the quality of life for our seniors, please contact Anna Do at 647-725-0844, as we always have special short-term projects to tackle. Many thanks to Lush Cosmetics and Staples.

Health and safety is a prime focus for the Care Centre – for our residents, our visitors and our staff. Our Joint Occupational and Health Safety Committee, chaired by Debo-rah Kroeger, Director of Operations, works throughout the year to ensure we are employing best practices and maintaining positive health and safe-ty initiatives. The Care Centre was graded at 100% by the 2011 Safety Groups Advantage Program spon-sored by the Public Services Health Safety Association. Congratulations to Deb and her team for making the Care Centre a healthy and safe home.

Volunteer Appreciation 2012

Thank you volunteers for the priceless hours you have committed, the heartfelt dedication you have shown, and the sincere kindness you have extended to our residents, se-niors, families and staff. 150 volunteers and staff came together in the Wintergar-den and main floor dining area to share an evening of appreciation, acknowledgement, delicious cuisine and socialization. The Circle of Excellence award, established by the Ontario Long-Term Care Association, was designed to recognize the signifi-cant contribution of volunteers to the care of seniors in long-term care homes across the province this year was presented to the Ukrainian Trou-badours. Initiated in 1996 by Bill Cyba, it wasn’t long before he was joined by singers, violin and mandolin players

and later on a pianist. Over the years the Troubadours have become an in-trinsic part of the life at the Care Cen-tre. They are a highlight of the week as they entertain the residents every Wednesday afternoon with Christ-mas Carols, Shevchenko, Birthday and Easter songs, traditional Ukrai-nian songs and other well-known and familiar songs. Congratulations Troubadors for your outstanding service to the Care Centre! Eugene Medicky’s mother-in-law became a resident of the Care Centre in 1996 and since then Eugene has been part of the group we fondly call “The Sunday Liturgy Group”. These are the volunteers that bring 97-100 residents every Sunday to attend liturgy in the chapel. Now that Eugene has retired from a ca-reer in forestry and teaching, he en-joys working around his cottage, but rarely, if ever misses a Sunday at the

Care Centre. Eugene certainly has made a difference at the Care Centre and has touched many lives with his caring and ability to closely connect with the residents. Thank you Eu-gene! Thank you to all of our won-derful volunteers.

Creative Connections, funded by New Horizons for Seniors

Over the next several months, the recreation staff and vol-unteers will be implementing a new program for our residents and other seniors in the community. Creative Connections will focus on expand-ing our artistic, musical and baking activities. Our recreation staff and volunteers will expand their skills and knowledge base as they will be trained in music and art therapy approaches by professional, accred-ited music and art therapists. Other goals of this program are social in-clusion and the active involvement of seniors of all ages from the Care Centre, St. Demetrius Seniors’ Resi-dence and those living in the sur-rounding community. Julie Plocki, Acting Manager of Programs says, “this is an exciting opportunity for

our seniors to participate in different group activities or pursue individual musical and artistic interests. Inte-grating seniors from the community, while engaging in a shared interest, will expand the social horizons of our residents.” Volunteers will be key to the implementation of Creative Connec-tions and will be involved in leading activities such as bi-monthly music karaoke and arts drop-in sessions, the organization of art exhibits and music shows, and outreach to po-tential volunteers and program par-ticipants living in the community. Seniors will also be offered an opportunity to showcase their talents at community and cultural events organized at the Care Centre such as our annual Celebrate and Honour Our Seniors event; Christ the Light of the World, Joy of Lights; our Annual Christmas Bazaar and Ukrainian Heritage Day. Volunteers have the oppor-tunity to contribute their time, tal-ents and skills to enhance the lives of our seniors; and intergenerational communication and seniors sharing

their cutural experience with youth volunteers who we hope will partici-pate in the drop-in arts, karaoke and baking sessions. If you would like to share your musical or artistic talents, or would like to receive training in approaches to music and art thera-py, please contact Anna Do, Devel-opment and Volunteer Coordinator (647) 725-0844.

Balcony Restoration Work Progresses at St. Demetrius Residence

The project continues throughout the summer months and the work on the east side of the Residence (the side facing the park and the Care Centre) has been completed. New balcony railings are currently being installed. On the west side (the side facing St. Demetri-us The Great Martyr Church), the deteriorated portion of the balconies have been removed and new concrete has been poured. We are on schedule to complete the project early in the fall. We thank the tenants and staff for their continued understanding and patience, and all of our neighbours and friends for their coop-eration.

Work has begun on the west side. The balcony railings add a new look to the balconies and the building façade.




2nd Annual Celebrate and Honour our Seniors

Throughout the afternoon of June 16th, members of the com-munity, family members, friends, and others with an interest in care and programs for seniors visited the Care Centre to gather information provid-ed by Ukrainian Social Services, Sts. Peter and Paul Seniors Residence, Etobicoke Services for Seniors, Al-zheimers Society of Toronto, Cen-tral Community Care Access Centre, Humber Seniors Services, and the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre’s

Family Council and Palliative Care Committee. A large group listened to Esther Atemo, Public Education Co-ordinator of the Alzheimers Society of Toronto give an overview and take questions and answers about Alzheimers and related dementia. Today, this disease afflicts 1 in 11 Canadians over the age of 65 and it is projected that within a genera-tion, the number of Canadians with Alzheimer’s disease or a related

dementia will more than double, ranging between 1 and 1.3 million people. We would like to thank Cardinal Funeral Homes Ltd., violin-ist Nicholas Tanchak, accordionist Andrew Shack, the group “Crazy Voda” and Medical Mart, Sysco, Maple Leaf Foods, Humber Valley Produce, Sara Lee, Nestle Vitality, Canada Breads for making this an extremely informative and enter-taining afternoon.

Summer Fun at the Residence The tenants at the St. De-metrius Residence enjoyed a sum-mer BBQ on July 19. The tenants munched on hamburgers, hot dogs and salads while listening to music and having their caricatures drawn. Participants had fun seeing the art-ist’s interpretation of each other’s hobbies and interests reflected in the portraits. The summer event was organized by Natalia Predko and supported by the St. Demetrius staff: Adrian, Anna, Bogdan, George and Irena and the Care Centre’s Food Services Department.

so beautiful”. I can’t tell you how much this warmed my heart and reassured me that this place is the best of the best. I went home with joy and a light heart. I have been wondering how they achieve that at the Care Centre. I think it must be coming from the management although we are not seeing them. But I feel the captain of this ship is a good one. I feel that captain smiling when I see staff smile, my mother smiled, my sister smiles, and I smile. I specifically want to men-tion personal support worker, Irena Szpyrka, for her incredible, warm, compassionate and professional care of my mother. I wasn’t here when my mother died, but she was

not alone. I hear she was commu-nicating with the staff until her very last moment, and then she passed in peace. I would also like to thank the doctors. I have always received the right advice. The Care Centre is indispens-able. Seniors can find everything that they need at this stage of their life - exceptional, compassionate care and to be close to what is dear-est to them, to us - our Ukrainian family culture. Here you are among zemliaky (fellow-countrymen). You can imagine how special this is for everyone and particularly for those who do not have family members, or have lost their loved ones. What is warmer and more comforting than being among zemliaky.

The Care Centre is a bless-ing for our community. It is part of who we are and our values of caring about our parents, caring for each other, and caring about our commu-nity and heritage. I feel fortunate that the Care Centre cared for my family and that I can come here, visit, and participate in the wonderful cultural and social events. I have also brought friends who are not Ukrainian and proudly showed them the Care Centre. They were amazed and just loved it! Hope-fully, one day when the time comes, I will come and live my last years at the Care Centre with joy and peace.

Volunteers Are Important! Our vision at the Care Centre is to be a leading provider of high quality long-term care, residential services

and community programs for Ukrainian seniors. This can only be achieved through the rich contributions of our

volunteers. Residents, family members and staff benefit as volunteers bring a warm sense of community and

home into the Care Centre, and much needed assistance.

Volunteers have new refreshing ideas, knowledge and skills and assist in a wide variety of roles. Volun-

teers are oriented and trained in their position and in a variety of other skills. We prefer a minimum commitment

of time, however are flexible for circumstances such as vacations and other life situations. With the help of our

dedicated volunteers we will continue to grow and ensure the best quality of life for our seniors. Positions we are

Volunteers will be required to use the cash register, greet customers, assist customers; restock shelves, count inventory, price products and provide general store support.

Friendly visiting creates lasting and meaningful relationships between seniors and volunteers. Duties may include: reading, chatting, playing cards, participating in leisure activities that both parties enjoy, keeping notes on the residents and reporting concerns and issues to registered nurses.

Assist and support the Recreation staff with the residents’ programs and activities by providing assistance with designing and posting calendars for scheduled programs, assistance with the publication of the monthly newsletter, interacting effectively with residents, interdisciplinary teams, family members, other volunteers and members of the community.

Minimum 1-2 hours per week, 6 months commitment

We are currently accepting donations of gently used Ukrainian ceramics (plates, bowls, cups, mugs, etc),

Ukrainian figurines, novels written in English, collectibles, crystal and bone china. Donations can be dropped off

at the reception desk of the Care Centre during regular business hours. All proceeds raised from the gift shop
