Louise Plant was born in Yorkshire, UK and following family tradition trained as a teacher. During the early 1990s, whilst teaching dance and physical education, she studied sculpture. In 1998, Plant left teaching to pursue her career in sculpture. She received the Year of the Artist Award from Arts Council England in 2000 and in 2003 was elected Associate of the Royal British Society of Sculptors (ARBS). Four years later Plant was awarded the Brian Mercer Scholarship at Studio Sem, Pietrasanta, Italy.

Louise Plant’s sculpture is exhibited internationally. Commissioners include private individuals, the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with Carillion, the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB), Persimmon Homes in collaboration with Continuum Arts, Northcliffe School, George Farrar Quarries and Elstone Hayes Associates.

Her sculpture is permanently sited in the UK in Bristol, Doncaster, Loughborough, Poole and Watford, in Pune, India and on world tour onboard the ship Arcadia. She is currently serving on theCouncil and the Exhibition Committee for the RBS.

Plant explored routes to understanding materials and form. Themes evolved which are evident in her current practice, dealing with the inner, private and unseen spaces and how they relate to the outer external world.

1996 - 2002

A new body of sculpture is created by Plant combining stone, brass, steel and aluminium. Based on internal and external spaces held within and around a sphere this work has the appearance of exotic meteors from another world.

Plant completes a major commission for the RNIB: a multi piece sculpture that enables independent interaction for residential and visiting students.

Her first visit to Italy marks the start of her work with marble. Plant carves into and through marble extending her interest in the relationships between inner and outer worlds.

2006 - 2009

Plant develops work that is both a representation of the internal and external body and creates a bridge, the link between the inner and outer world. Removing the shiny outer surfaces from her work, she begins to focus on the internal world of the imaginary body acknowledging the visceral qualities of the inner world that are to become important in her future work. Plant returns to Italy to complete the Brian Mercer Scholarship at Studio Sem, Pietrasanta.

Arched form evolves, sinews are stretched to their limit of muscular torsion and the sculptural form splits in two. Exhibitions in London at Clifford Chance, Canary Wharf and the RBS headquarters in South Kensington attract wide audiences. Passionate about developing the skills and knowledge acquired during the scholarship at Studio Sem, Plant continues to push the boundaries of her artistic achievements.

2010 - 2011

New work cast in bronze and further carving in marble explore the spaces within the imaginary body and Plant shows the crucial relationship between what is there and what is not. A playful journey perhaps, but a journey through the body that searches for physical forms one can only feel but cannot see. It is a journey to the core of the imaginary body.

Plant wins a significant commission with the Ministry of Defence.

Additionally Amarylla Guerilla, a conceptual political piece is realised and exhibited at the Harold Martin Botanic Gardens, Leicester. A soundscape accompanies this sculpture, accessible via QR code (also available on YouTube).

Ps are a new body of sculptural installation work by Plant, in production and growing in number. With an ambiguous orientation, without necessity for base or plinth, each individual P can stand alone or interact with another forming a single or multiple sculptural mass. Unique in form and not fixed, the configuration of the individual or the group changes with relation to context and location. Ps are interactive, accessible and can morph in size and shape. They embody a sense of fun, occupying space figuratively with the apparent sophistication of a number who know their insides from their outer situation. Simultaneously they push out into their space with energy, which in turn pushes into the very fabric of their bodies. Ps are developing a life of their own.
