NICK SOUSANIS Out of the Box and into the Margins February 3-4, 2017 UGA Hotel & Conference Center, 1197 S. Lumpkin Street, Athens, GA 30607 Nick Sousanis is an assistant professor in the School of Humanities & Liberal Studies at San Francisco State University. He is the author of Unflattening from Harvard University Press, originally his dissertation written and drawn entirely in comics form. Unflattening won the 2016 American Publishers Association Humanities award, the 2016 Lynd Ward prize, and is nominated for a 2016 Eisner Award. In addition, it was named the best graphic novel of 2015 by numerous critics. Children’s book illustrator and author Eric Velasquez, the son of Afro-Puerto Rican parents, was born in Spanish Harlem and grew up in Harlem. His dual heritage coupled with the experience of living in dual cultures in New York City gives Eric a rich and unique cultural perspective. As a child, his love for doodling and drawing was strongly encouraged by his mother. From his grandmother he inherited a love of music and from his father he developed a love of film.
