Match backgroundTottenham Hotspur's third successive appearance in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 brings a first meetingwith Leipzig, who are making their debut at this stage of the competition.

• Spurs were runners-up last season and booked their return to the knockout phase by finishing second in Group Bbefore Christmas. Leipzig, meanwhile, are in the UEFA Champions League for the second time and, unlike their2017/18 debut, extended this season's campaign into the knockout rounds as the winners of Group G.

• Leipzig are one of two teams to be making their last-16 debut in 2019/20, alongside Atalanta.

Form guideTottenham • Spurs finished six points clear in second place in Group B despite losing both games against Bayern München, whoended with maximum points. Tottenham picked up only one point from their first two matches, a 2-2 draw atOlympiacos preceding a 7-2 home defeat by Bayern – the first time they had conceded seven goals at home in their137-year history – but recovered in style with a 5-0 home win against Crvena zvezda, their biggest win in the UEFAChampions League.

• The 4-0 victory in the Belgrade return on Matchday 4 was also Tottenham's record away success in the competition, before a last-16 place was secured as Spurs, in José Mourinho's first European match since replacing MauricioPochettino as manager, came from two goals down to beat Olympiacos 4-2 in the fifth round of matches. The groupcampaign ended with a 3-1 loss in Munich.

• In last season's UEFA Champions League, Pochettino's side recovered from taking one point from their first threegames to reach the round of 16, where Borussia Dortmund were brushed aside (3-0 h, 1-0 a). Dramatic away-goalvictories against both Manchester City (1-0 h, 3-4 a) and Ajax (0-1 h, 3-2 a) then took Spurs into a first European Cupfinal, but Premier League rivals Liverpool proved too strong at Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano, running out 2-0winners.

• Spurs had won only one of six games in the UEFA Champions League (D1 L4) before Matchday 3, but thenrecorded three successive victories before losing at Bayern.

• The London club have won ten of their last 14 UEFA Champions League home matches, losing the other four. Theyhave drawn only once at home in the competition – 0-0 against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16 (1-0 aggregate).Spurs' record in their new stadium is W3 L2.

• This is only Spurs' fourth UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie (W2 L1). In 2010/11 they won 1-0 away to ACMilan and on aggregate; two seasons ago they drew 2-2 at Juventus in the first leg but bowed out after a 2-1 homedefeat.

• Last season's defeat of Dortmund at this stage means Spurs' record in two-legged knockout ties against Germanclubs is W5 L3.

• The Lilywhites had won four consecutive matches against German clubs, home and away, all against Dortmund, before losing at home to Bayern on Matchday 2.

Leipzig• Leipzig finished three points clear at the top of Group G, picking up seven of their 11 points on their travels thanks towins at Benfica (2-1) and Zenit (2-0) before letting slip a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Lyon on Matchday 6. At home, they bounced back from losing 2-0 to eventual section runners-up Lyon by defeating Zenit 2-1 and drawing 2-2 withBenfica in their penultimate game to secure progress.

• Leipzig have won five of their 12 UEFA Champions League fixtures (D3 L4).

• Third in the Bundesliga last season and German Cup finalists, this is Leipzig's third European campaign, and onlytheir 31st match. In 2017/18 they became the first team to make their European debut in the UEFA ChampionsLeague group stage, picking up seven points to finish third in a section including Beşiktaş, Porto and Monaco. Theywent on to reach the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals before losing to Marseille.

• Two seasons ago Leipzig lost at Beşiktaş (0-2) and Porto (1-3), but recorded a 4-1 success at Monaco to claim theirfirst European away victory.

• Before this season's successes, Leipzig had won only three of their 12 away European matches (D4 L5).

• This is Leipzig's first European game against an English club.

• Leipzig's record in two-legged knockout European ties is W5 L1, their 2017/18 loss to Marseille the sole defeat (1-0h, 2-5 a).

• Took over at Inter in June 2008 and in his first campaign retained the Scudetto, a feat the Nerazzurri repeated in2009/10 when they also added the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League title, their first European Cup since1965.

• Victory at the Santiago Bernabéu was Mourinho's last act as Inter coach before he joined Real Madrid. Julian NagelsmannDate of birth: 23 July 1987Nationality: GermanPlaying career: 1860 München II, Augsburg IICoaching career: Augsburg (youth), 1860 München (youth), Hoffenheim (youth), Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig

• Nagelsmann's playing career began at Issing before a move to Augsburg's youth academy. From 2002 herepresented 1860 München for five seasons, starting off in the youth side before being promoted to the second team.

• Injury prevented him from making a single appearance in 2006/07, so he returned to Augsburg, where he picked upa serious knee injury and was forced to retire in 2007 aged just 20 having never played a competitive first-team game.

• Nagelsmann, who has a degree in sports and applied coaching, swiftly took up a post in Augsburg's youth coachingset-up under Thomas Tuchel before two years in charge of 1860's Under-17 side.

• His association with Hoffenheim began in 2010 and he led the club's Under-19s to the league title in 2013/14, hisfirst season. Succeeded Huub Stevens as first-team coach in February 2016, aged just 28 – the youngest coach inBundesliga history – and guided the club away from the Bundesliga relegation zone by the end of that campaign.

• Took Hoffenheim to a fourth-placed finish in 2016/17 although their subsequent UEFA Champions League adventurelasted only one tie, Liverpool eliminating them in the play-offs. Another strong Bundesliga season was rewarded withthird place and on 21 June 2018 it was announced that Nagelsmann would leave Hoffenheim at the end of 2018/19 totake over as coach of RB Leipzig; before departing he oversaw Hoffenheim's debut UEFA Champions League groupcampaign and a ninth-placed Bundesliga finish.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League: Did you know?Overall records• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with ACMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successivetitles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

Knockout stage• Real Madrid have qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase a record 24 times, including 23 insuccession. They have also played a competition-high 97 knockout phase matches – ahead of Bayern München (92)and Barcelona (91).

• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 48 times, including six in 2018/19 – a competition record for asingle season.

• Before last season, only twice – Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos in the 1995/96 semi-finals and Internazionale'svictory against Bayern in the 2010/11 round of 16 – had a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. However, Ajaxagain (against Real Madrid) and Manchester United (against Paris Saint-Germain) both achieved the feat in the2018/19 round of 16 before Tottenham (against Ajax) did likewise in the semi-finals.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the2016/17 last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previousrecord held by Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0at home; Roma equalled that margin in the 2017/18 quarter-finals, turning round a 4-1 first-leg loss at Barcelona witha 3-0 home success, while in the 2018/19 semi-finals Liverpool lost 3-0 in the first leg at Barcelona but went throughafter a 4-0 home victory.

• Thirty-three ties have been decided on away goals, including 13 where the triumphant team lost the first leg. Bayernand Monaco have benefited from the away goals rule five times – more than any other club – whereas Internazionalehave been eliminated by that method a record four times.

• In all, 29 ties have required extra time. Thirteen have been settled by extra time alone: six round of 16 encountersincluding Porto-Roma in 2018/19, five quarter-finals, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool, and the2013/14 final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties. Bayern, Chelsea and Atlético Madrid have all appearedin three shoot-outs, sharing the competition record, with Bayern, Atlético and Liverpool having won the most (twoapiece).

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Atlético Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs. Thirteenhave finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid's defeat of Manchester City in the 2015/16 semi-finals.

• Liverpool (versus Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equalling theknockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at Schalke in 2013/14 and Bayern's 5-0success at Sporting CP in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16.

• Bayern eventually beat Sporting by a record aggregate margin of 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; thattie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie until it wasequalled by Liverpool's 7-6 aggregate win against Roma in the 2017/18 semi-final.

• Bayern and Manchester City jointly hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions Leagueknockout match. Bayern beat both Basel (2011/12) and Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 secondleg, while City beat Schalke by the same scoreline at the same stage of the 2018/19 competition.

• A record five clubs from England participated in the 2017/18 knockout phase. Including 2019/20, England has alsoprovided four clubs on eight other occasions – as has Spain five times and Germany twice. England is the only nation

to have provided four quarter-finalists in a season, 2018/19 being the third occasion after 2007/08 and 2008/09.

• There are four clubs from two nations in the round of 16 for only the third time in 2019/20. England and Spain bothhad four apiece in 2008/09, and there were four each from England and Germany in 2013/14.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to have lifted the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998,Milan 2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win it three times, a feat CarloAncelotti (Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) and Zinédine Zidane (2016, 2017, 2018) have replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburg 1983), José Mourinho (Porto 2004, Internazionale2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

Goalscoring records• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusenon 7 March 2012, a feat matched by Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Thirteenmore players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, including two Bayern players, Serge Gnabryand Robert Lewandowski, in this season's group fixtures at Tottenham Hotspur and Crvena zvezda respectively.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsinghis own mark of nine in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in 2017/18.Messi got ten goals in 2016/17, as did Lewandowski this season; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy(2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi, Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03), Lewandowski (2018/19) and Erling Braut Haaland(2019/20) all managed eight.

• Messi's hat-trick against PSV Eindhoven on Matchday 1 of the 2018/19 competition was his eighth in thecompetition, a mark Ronaldo matched against Atlético Madrid in that season's round of 16 second leg.

Oldest and youngest players• Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featuredagainst Real Madrid on Matchday 6 in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldestoutfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens in 2006/07.
