“Hello there! If you’re reading this you are about to take the first step in an amazing journey throughout your college career! Circle K International is a lot more than just community service, its family. The people you get to know in this club become your family away from home. You’ll meet your closest friends and in this club and foster relationships that will last a lifetime. However, we’re even bigger than that. UC Riverside Circle K makes immense impacts in not only our community, but throughout California and Nevada. This club is your first step in not only making a difference in the world, but creating an impact that will help the needy, lead your peers, and promote friendships. I joined this organization as a freshman and never looked back. Now it’s your opportunity to make waves here at UC Riverside through Circle K! Welcome!” -Ryan Lara, 2011-2012 UC Riverside Circle K President

“I am Crista Cabahug and I am your Desert Oasis Lieutenant Governor. Many of you may be wondering, “What the heck is Desert Oasis? And what’s a Lieutenant Governor?” No worries, I will be more than happy to explain! In our District of California, Nevada, and Hawaii, we are further broken down into Divisions based on location. Our Division is DESERT OASIS, which consists of 6 wonderful Colleges and Universities located in the Inland Empire and Las Vegas! Cool right?! As for being Lieutenant Governor, my job is to oversee these 6 clubs and make sure we are all running efficiently and are united as one huge family. Being a member of UCR Circle K is truly something to be proud of. Every day we better our community, whether it be through tutoring children at Longfellow Elementary, attending Soup Kitchen at our local church, or doing street clean ups to beautify our city. Not only do we serve others, but we better ourselves as well through our countless leadership opportunities by being on board, on a committee, or chairing events. Last but not least, in doing these endeavors through service and leadership; we gain bonds as friends and even more so as a family. These friendships last a lifetime, and stemmed from the strong base of being a part of Circle K. Circle K really is much more than just “the gas station”, it is a prestigious international organization that focuses on building our local communities and individuals in those communities as well. Circle K makes doing community service fun! Who knew?! I would like to welcome you all to our Highlander CKI Family! I am so pleased to be in this club with you all, and am so excited to see all of the wonderful things we are to accomplish this upcoming year! And don’t forget, REP THAT SCOTTY BEAR PRIDE AND TARTAN SOUL!” -Crista Cabahug, D.O. Lieutenant Governor 2011-12

“For the oldies’ clarification, this used to be called “Bear Facts Orientation.”

Summer tabling was amazing thanks to the active members of Circle K here at UC

Riverside! I am so proud to work with such selfless and charming people.

Everyone brought their own personalities to our table, making it impossible for the

freshmen to walk by without feeling the magnetic pull of our diversity. Even though

we were limited to four tablers at a time, many came by just to hang out and flaunt

our “fellowship” tenant. One sweet memory was when a freshman asked us to “do

a cheer.” With Hans leading the OJ cheer, Circle K members shamelessly blew

everyone away into pure silence. Freshmen were shocked, but pleased by our

spirit level. They, too, showed an immense amount of spirit and drive to help the

community. After getting pages of sign ups, we finally packed up the fun and left

with smiles. I definitely saw some leadership brewing after Highlander Orientation

and I’m super excited for the upcoming year!” –Priscilla Thai

What a great way to start a beautiful morning than to volunteer on the beach in the summer! On a Saturday morning in mid July, we drove down to Seal Beach and successfully passed the 405 freeway without a Carmageddon nightmare. As we arrived, we were given bags and gloves to pick up trash and recyclables that we may see lying around the beach. There weren’t many trashes to pick up, but it was nice to see how little our efforts can made a such huge impact to the environment in the long run. The most interesting part was a board display that showed people how plastics bags and magazines can be turned into purses, bags, totes and other useful items. It was nice to see that something we could throw away can turn into something that we could carry around with. Little efforts such as recycling plastics bags, recycling bottles, and picking up trash can make a huge impact to the environment. As redundant as it sounds, the three R’s still rule! Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. –Anh Thach

Circle K International did a collaborative service project with our local YMCA. The YMCA was raising money for their new after-school program that benefited children. Basically the program helped foster and create new activities and after-school programs in the fields of music and learning-- which would keep kids off the street and would be better prepared for the future rather than being involved with gangs and negative influences. So basically the YMCA partnered with JC Penny and whenever a person purchased something they were asked if they would like to round up to the nearest dollar. The change acquired from rounding up would go towards the YMCA. Circle K International went to JC Penny and helped by handing out fliers that the YMCA had prepared and also by standing at cash registers helping bag items the customers had purchased and at the same time telling them how the program would be beneficial. Circle K International worked with the Riverside YMCA for about five and a half hours. The overall experience was very rewarding since we knew we were helping a good cause. -Krishna Ganapathi

The Las Vegas June WAW weekend was not at all what I expected. I thought the volunteering would be the last thing people thought of and mostwould be more concerned with going around the city, but I was pleasantly surprised. Not only were the events planned out perfectly and spaced out accordingly, everyone seemed very enthusiastic and optimistic about the service projects, and really involved with all of the other events. The continuing members were also very helpful to the ones who were new to the experience: by re-explaining how the Kiwanis systems work in Saturday's leadership workshop, making time for a light tour of the city for the ones who have never been to Vegas before, and basically always making sure everyone was together, accounted for, and happy. Although my favorite part was Sunday's Crystal Palace Roller Blading event, the entire experience was fantastic. It was a fun and heart-warming weekend, and I hope to join CKI in this type of event next time! –Ngozi Okanta

This month's WAW weekend was hosted by NSC Circle K. Friday night we went to a fun food truck social at the El Cortez Hotel. There was an array of food from unique grilled cheese sandwiches to pulled pork fries (which were delicious)! The next day we went to a leadership workshop about communication hosted by the Jerica Turek. When we got there we played a few games that helped us bond with the other colleges in our division. The workshop was so much fun and a great thing to experience with everyone else! After the workshop, we went to a Hawaiian festival and a hot dog shop that sold original Coney Island hot dogs. Once we had our fill of the tasty food, we headed back over to the same room where the workshop was held and worked on making PTP dolls, bookmarks for children, and colorful lanyards. Later that same day we went to a really awesome indoor blacklight mini golf social. We all wore glow-in-the-dark bracelets, necklaces, and rings and had fun! Our LTG Crista Cabahug even won a free game with a hole-in-one! Good job! After the mini-golf was another social at Amanda's house. This social was special because we were celebrating Tyler St. Jean from CSU San Bernardino's birthday! We surprised him with cake and ice cream and of course, sang happy birthday to him. Hope you had a good one with desert oasis Tyler! On Sunday, we had an eat for service at Yogurtland. Next to Yogurtland was a place called Firehouse Subs, where some of us ate, that had sandwiches that were purely amazing!! I hope we go there again next time! The DCM was also held at Yogurtland and was very informative. WAW weekends are always a lot of fun! I highly suggest everyone to go at least once! Not only do you meet new people and bond with them, but you have a great weekend with Desert Oasis! –Sandra Mateo

District Summer Service Social (DSSS) is an amazing annual district event for Cal-Nev-Ha Circle K. Every year Circle Kers from all schools meet up and take part in events that pertain to all three of Circle K’s tenants: Service, Leadership, and Fellowship. The event coincides with Kiwanis District Convention. This year’s District Summer Service Social took place in San Diego, CA at the Town and Country Hotel. We had tons of fun meeting Circle Kers all the way from Sacramento State, all the way down to UC San Diego. There was a variety of different events at this year’s District Summer Service Social. We had events like a board game night, workshops educating members on different aspects of Circle K such as fundraising, service projects, membership retention for example. We also participated in a variety of different service projects like a nature cleanup and creating motivational bookmarks for elementary school students. One of my favorite aspects of District Summer Service Social is the fellowship. Even though we are doing a variety of workshops and projects, I really like meeting new Circle K members, and reuniting with older ones. This will be one of the few times we meet up with certain Circle Kers from other schools until Crazy Kompetition for Infants South (CKI South) and Fall Training Conference (FTC). -Ryan Lara

On August 27th, we worked with a community improvement program known as Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful during United Way of Inland Valleys’ 2011 Day of Caring. Day of Caring is an event that strives to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism, increase the awareness of local human service agencies and schools, and demonstrate what people working together for the community's good can accomplish. Hundreds, if not thousands, of volunteers throughout Riverside, Moreno Valley, Perris, and other regions assemble within their regions and significantly improve the condition of a community. At 8 AM, Circle K arrived at Arlington Sports Park. We registered and ate breakfast along with more than a hundred other volunteers that came to help out. We even ran into the lovable John. F Kennedy Key Clubbers, but unfortunately we did not get to work with them. After everyone registered, the large group of volunteers was broken up into smaller groups for different tasks, which included litter clean ups, graffiti removal, and planting. Our Circle K group decided to do graffiti removal. Our job involved painting over long stretches of walls from 8:30 AM to about 10:30 AM. Despite our group being about only 15 volunteers, the walls were painted over with lightning speed. Our volunteer service ended slightly early due to intense heat and sun exposure. That’s Riverside weather for you! After the service project, United Way provided the volunteers with free lunch at Riverside City Hall. We were able to mingle with the Key Clubbers after everyone received their food. We were not only rewarded with being able to help the community, but we also got a delicious lunch in the process. –Vincent Ng

Riverside Kiwanis held their annual Turkey BBQ fundraiser this summer at Fairmount Park and it was the perfect atmosphere for such a fun family outing. There was a line of about six or seven grills, all dedicated to turkey. In addition to the turkey, there was coleslaw, beans, hot dogs, rolls, cranberry sauce, and ice-cream. This event could not have happened however if it weren’t for the volunteers! It was a Kiwanis family event in which members from Key Club, Circle K, CAYP, and Riverside Kiwanis were all in attendance and were all pitching in their time and effort into making the annual Turkey BBQ fundraiser a big success. Volunteers helped out with set-up and distribution of food and drink. Everyone’s contribution made the event run more smoothly and effectively. We fed friends, families, and even local deputies as they took a break off of work to enjoy the BBQ on a cool summer’s evening. There was also a raffle and for those lucky participants that won, they were rewarded with bikes, movie tickets, and gift cards. For the price of those raffle tickets, it was definitely worth it. Volunteers that didn’t win anything from the raffle were still able to feast on some complimentary turkey with all their hard work. All in all, it was a great event and if you didn’t get a chance to come out this year, then be sure to keep an eye out for it next summer, as it is an annual event! –Tony Chau

For the Gears of War 3 Midnight Launch service project, we headed out to a Fontana Gamestop to help with opening day. Although I’m not much of a gamer myself, I still had a ton of fun! There were a few of us who helped facilitate the crowd while others helped cook food and prepare the hot dogs to hand out to the customers waiting in line. There was a video game tournament for the customers to play while they waited as well. Free food was also provided for the volunteers, which included hot dogs, chips, punch, and cupcakes. Even though this wasn’t your average service project, I still had a lot of fun being able to help out while bonding with other people! –Celeste Li

Every single year, our Circle K club has a Fall Install to initiate new club members, and our Kiwanis club is no different. On Thursday, September 22nd, our Kiwanis of Riverside club had their fall install, and Key Clubbers and Circle K-ers were invited. It was a very nice event to go to; everyone was dressed to the nine’s, there was amazing food, and it was lovely to see our lovely Kiwanians. Their fall install was in the form of a general meeting, and it was nice to see their president have her last official meeting. They started off with the amazing food, Prime Rib. After everyone was settled, the meeting began. They installed their new President, Ken, and their Lt. Governor. It was nice seeing old faces and meeting new Kiwanians. Overall, it was a fun event, and I am glad that I went, and I encourage everyone to go next year. It was a great way to start of the year. –Alia Bana

Our two Member of the Months (or MoMs for short), for June and July, were Vivian Lam and Krishna Ganapathi. What do these two get for being MoM? They both receive a free dinner value at $20 to eat anywhere they wanted. Vivian, our June MoM, had hers at an all you can eat Korean BBQ restaurant. We had 15 people go and spent time with her eating and laughing. Krishna had his MoM dinner at Red Robin, Yummmm. It was a fun experience where everyone was able to eat endless fries and a juicy burger. If you guys want a chance to become MoM, go to events and show leadership. -Jimmy Lao
