Message from the AD

On behalf of the Division of Athletics and our more than 700 student-athletes who proudly wear the Husky uniform, I want to thank you for your continued generosity. Each day I am fortunate to have an opportunity to work with these talented student-athletes who excel in the classroom, in competition and in the community.

For the first time in school history, three of our programs reached the pinnacle of their sport as our women’s field hockey, women’s basketball and men’s basketball teams all captured NCAA National Championships! These championships are a true testament to their hard work and dedication. Perhaps most importantly, in the classroom, more than 50% of our student-athletes earned a grade point average of 3.0 or greater. In addition, Husky student-athletes “gave back” by performing nearly 1,000 hours of community service. As a member of the UConn family, I know that you take great pride in these accomplishments.

Success is not an accident. As we continue to build upon these accomplishments, it is imperative that we have the resources necessary to maintain championship success. As the cost of education continues to rise, travel and facility costs increase, our need for private support is crucial. By investing in UConn Athletics, you will have a profound impact on our ability to maintain the championship environment for our student-athletes.

It will take all of UConn Country to ensure we remain among the nation’s most outstanding universities. Thank you for your continued support of UConn Athletics!

Go Huskies

THE UCONN CLUBFor more than 60 years, The UConn Club has been recognizing donors who have made UConn Athletics the home of champions. By encouraging support from the Division’s donors and friends, The UConn Club helps student-athletes succeed on and off the field of play. Any donor contributing $100 or more annually to the UConn Foundation in support of the Division of Athletics is eligible to receive benefits from the Division and is also recognized by The UConn Club as a member.

UCONN FOUNDATIONThe University of Connecticut Foundation is a tax-exempt corporation with a mission to solicit, receive and administer gifts and financial resources from private sources for the benefit of all campuses and programs for the University of Connecticut. The Foundation operates exclusively to promote the educational, scientific, cultural and recreational objectives of the University. As the primary fundraising vehicle to solicit and administer private gifts and grants which will enhance the University’s mission, the Foundation supports UConn’s pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and public service.

“What I have enjoyed most about UConn in my first few years are the people I have met, the friendships I have formed, and the opportunities I have been fortunate enough to receive. UConn is an amazing university with great academics and athletics. I feel very lucky to be a part of this school.”

GREAT WAYS TO SUPPORT HUSKY GREATNESSUConn is dedicated to providing its student-athletes and coaches with the resources necessary to continue being champions both on and off the fields of play. As we continue to recruit the best students, we must provide them with everything they need to excel academically, athletically and as they prepare for their lives beyond graduation. Your investment in the very best facilities, equipment, academic support and leadership is crucial to their growth and success. By supporting one of the programs listed below, you will provide critical resources to all of our 24 teams. Every gift, regardless of size will make a difference.

Husky Excellence Fund — This fund helps support all 24 sports and 700 student-athletes. It is the true driving force that allows us to be the most competitive and successful in everything we do.

Husky Annual Scholarship Fund — Our primary mission is to recruit, train, and educate student-athletes and provide them with the framework to be successful in their chosen field of discipline. This year the Division of Athleticswill pay the University more than $12 million in support of athletic scholarships.

Capital Projects — Ensures we have the first-class facilities to be among the nation’s elite programs. Currently, we are building the UConn Basketball Champions Center, but have plans to upgrade facilities for baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and men’s and women’s ice hockey.

“Receiving a scholarship has provided me with many more opportunities beyond attaining my degree and playing soccer. It also allowed me to be a member of the UConn family and a part of the strong tradition of the UConn Men’s Soccer program. The atmosphere on campus and the whole experience at UConn is something that I will relish forever.”

– Adria Beso (Junior/Men’s Soccer/EconomicsMajor/Lleida, Spain)

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

COST OF SCHOLARSHIPSWithout your generosity, many of our student-athletes would be unable to attend UConn. You give our students the opportunity to be champions in the classroom and in the sport they love. Providing student-athletes with the opportunity to obtain a quality education is our primary mission. As the cost of scholarships has continued to rise over the past decade, your support provides us with the ability to continue to recruit the best student-athletes in the country.

Private fundraising is more essential than ever for the Division of Athletics. In the 2013-14 academic year, the total scholarship expense is projected to be $12,163,129. Increasing scholarship support for our student-athletes will be a key to the future success of UConn Athletics.

PRIORITY POINT SYSTEM UConn Athletics uses the priority point system in an effort to fairly allocate seats to current donors. The system is designed to acknowledge both consistent annual giving (through retention of permanent points) and current year giving (through bonus points).

Points and/or season tickets may not be transferred from one person to another or from one account to another. Also, the University does not transfer points or tickets by virtue of wills. In the event of the death of an account holder or season ticket holder, the surviving spouse (the definition of spouse is consistent with applicable state law) retains the points, providing that the surviving spouse is on the account at the time of death.

Annual pledges/donations earn three types of priority points: permanent points, bonus points (for non-football/basketball seat donations), and membership points.

1 permanent point is earned for every $100 pledged/contributed to UConn Athletics. Permanent points are awarded for football and basketball seat donations. Permanent points accrue and are cumulative.

1 bonus point is earned for every $100 pledged/contributed to UConn Athletics. Bonus points are temporary points for the pledge year only (not cumulative). Bonus points are not awarded for football or basketball seat donations.

At the end of each pledge year (March 31), bonus points are removed from the donor account.

2 membership points are earned each pledge year (with a minimum annual donation of $100). Membership points accrue and are cumulative.

Example: A new member making a $5,000 pledge/donation in a pledge year, based on the priority point calculation formula:

$5,000 Pledge/Donation Yields:50 Permanent points50 Bonus points (not for football/basketball seat donations) 2 Membership Points

102 Total priority points earned for the pledge year; and 52 points will carry forward into the new pledge year.

PRIORITY SEATING

SEASON TICKETSTo receive 2014-15 priority seating privileges, a donation in support of UConn Athletics must be made according to priority deadlines-April 30 for football and June 30 for basketball. Seating for all ticketed sports is allocated by current membership status and the use of priority point system.

POSTSEASON TICKETS Current donors will have the opportunity to order tickets to all postseason events based upon availability. Tickets are allocated by current donor level and priority points within each donor level.

BASKETBALLYou may order as many season tickets as desired. However, the number of seats guaranteed together will be based on current donor level. Seatingallocation will be determined by priority points.

BASKETBALL SEATING GUIDELINESIt is difficult to predetermine seat location, as it depends on the demand for season tickets and the desirability of sections.

Please review the point total seating charts for the 2013-14 basketball season listed on pages 14-17. These are the best indicators of the number of priority points that may be necessary for the 2014-15 season for current donors. Be reminded that while these numbers were accurate for 2013-14 season, it is impossible to predict the projected point totals for specific seat locations. These are just estimated guidelines. “ I

To maximize the tax deductible portion of your gift, you may decline to receive any benefits when you make your gift to UConn. If you choose to accept your benefits, we are required to inform you your charitable contribution will be reduced by the value of those benefits. Please consult your tax advisor for further clarification.

SEASON TICKETS & SEAT DONATIONS - Donors to UConn Athletics, are entitled to receive preferred seating locations for season tickets purchased for football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s ice hockey, men’s basketball, or women’s basketball. The cost of tickets is not tax deductible. However, Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 170(l) provides that if a taxpayer makes a payment to or for the benefit of a university and, as a result, receives the right to purchase tickets for seating at an athletic event, he or she is eligible to deduct 80% of his or her contributions for federal tax purposes. In accordance with IRC Section 170(l), all donors who are entitled to purchase tickets with preferred seating and who do not request a waiver of points (explained below) may be eligible to deduct only 80% of their contribution for federal income tax purposes. Patrons making a seat donation will receive a receipt acknowledging the donation. Please consult your professional tax advisor. Additionally, matching gifts cannot be used to pay for a seat.

OTHER BENEFITS - The Internal Revenue Code also addresses benefits (other than priority seating) that a donor may receive as a result of the contribution. A donor may only deduct the amount of a contribution that is more than the value of all benefits received. Car decals, newsletters, and other token items do not reduce the amount eligible for deduction for tax purposes; however, other goods or services a donor receives in consideration for donations, such as those described on pages 8-9, can further reduce deductibility of a gift. Please consult your tax advisor.

WAIVER OF POINTS In order to deduct 100% of a contribution to UConn Athletics, the donor must submit in writing a waiver of points at the time of making a pledge and/or contribution. In requesting a waiver of points, the donor further understands that he or she forfeits priority points and their application as it relates to ticket assignment and allocation; once priority points are forfeited, they cannot be credited retroactively to a donor’s account. A donor who waves points will still be eligible for other benefits as described on pages 8-9, unless they too are waived in writing. Only through a waiver of points is a contribution eligible for 100% tax deduction.

SUBSTANTIATION REQUIREMENTS As required by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the UConn Foundation, Inc. will furnish donors with receipts for contributions. Donors should retain their receipts for federal income tax purposes.

NCAA RULES COMPLIANCEThe University of Connecticut feels very strongly about adhering to NCAA rules and regulations. The University is responsible for the conduct of any individual or organization affiliated with the Division of Athletics. As a contributor to UConn Athletics, you are designated as a representative of athletic interests or a “rep” or a “booster” by the NCAA and thus are responsible for adhering to NCAA regulations. According to NCAA Bylaw 6.4.2.1, the University of Connecticut must inform any individual or organization that receives benefits or privileges relating to the athletics program that such benefits may be withheld if the individual or organization engaged in conduct that is determined to be a violation of NCAA regulations.

The University of Connecticut values your interest and support of the Division of Athletics. Your support and assistance in the area of rules compliance is greatly needed. In order to educate you on NCAA rules and regulations, the University of Connecticut annually distributes an information brochure entitled “University of Connecticut NCAA Guidebook.” This brochure provides you with a brief summary of the most important NCAA regulations as it pertains to representatives’ relationships with prospective and current student-athletes. The Division of Athletics abides by the fundamental rule of thumb that “it is better to be safe than sorry” so please contact us with any questions. Failure to adhere to NCAA rules and regulations may result in severe ramifications for the University of Connecticut.

If you need more information about NCAA rules and regulations, please feel free to contact Angie Cretors, Senior Associate Director of Athletics/NCAA Rules Education and Compliance Services, at (860) 486-1211, or email [email protected].
