From the Dean“New” may be a short word, but it is one that is used repeatedly throughout this “new” publication. That is because we have a lot of exciting information to share with you. Our cover story describes how our Executive Development Center (EDC) has a new home in downtown Orlando. We relocated the EDC from the main campus so we can expand programs and be closer to the Central Florida business community.

We hired some new faculty members and appointed new professorships. We will soon have a new Web site that features more information on the college, more event listings, and more profiles on our students and faculty. Our Graduate Business Programs has found a new way to reach current and potential students by launching pages on Facebook and LinkedIn.

As you read through this publication, however, you will learn that not everything about us is new. In fact, much remains the same.

The quality of our students remains outstanding. Lalita Booth was recently selected as the first-ever Truman Scholar from UCF and was named as one of the Top 10 College Women of 2008 by Glamour magazine.

I continue to be impressed with our graduates. This year marks the 10th anniversary of our Hall of Fame. To date, 50 alumni have been inducted into the program. The caliber of our graduates is so remarkable that the selection committee often has a difficult time limiting the number of new inductees each year!

I hope you enjoy our new publication and I look forward to sharing our future endeavors with you. In the meantime, please contact me with any thoughts, questions or suggestions you may have about our college.

Meet Randy I. Anderson

Randy I. Anderson has joined UCF as the inaugural Howard Phillips Eminent Scholar Chair in Real Estate. He will direct the research and education institute in the Dr. P. Phillips School of Real Estate.

Hometown: Hennepin, Illinois—Population 700. The entire county went to the same high school.

Family: Wife Jennifer, son Jackson, daughter Ava, and two dogs—Ellie and Zeke.

What made you decide to come to UCF? If you asked me to describe my dream job I would have said, “I would like to be an endowed chair at a Ph.D. granting university in a large metropolitan area with a dynamic real estate market and a chance to build a top real estate program.” When this job appeared right in my backyard, it seemed too good to be true. I feel truly blessed to be the inaugural Howard Phillips Eminent Scholar Chair at UCF.

Where do you see the Dr. P. Phillips School of Real Estate in 10 years? We are starting from a unique position because the real estate community has already embraced our program and has given us many resources—financial and otherwise. The gift from the Dr. Phillips organization puts us on the radar screen of real estate programs to watch. The commitment from the Central Florida Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties will allow us to attract another top faculty member for the program and to continue our growth. In addition, we are also working closely with experienced Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) instructors to become one of less than 20 programs in the country that are part of the CCIM university affiliate program.

How long do you predict the current real estate downturn will last? The overall economy is in a very difficult state. The largest component of our Gross

Domestic Product is consumption and many factors are working against us:

Weak housing market• High energy prices• Struggling labor market• Low consumer confidence• Chaos in the financial markets/mortgage and •

otherwise

These factors are causing difficulties across virtually every sector in the economy. As such, we have not seen the worst of the downturn in the real estate markets nationally.

However, there are a couple of important bright notes: Central Florida has perhaps the best mid-to-long-term prospects of any market across the U.S. due to geographical and demographic factors. Secondly, substantial wealth creation in the real estate sector

really only occurs when there is a market dislocation like there was back during the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) days. Savvy investors have a once-in-a-working-lifetime opportunity to buy assets and create wealth. Everyone seems to understand this, but only those who find a way to participate can benefit…so, find a way!

“I truly believe we have a legi tima te opportuni ty to have a top 10 program with a full array of undergraduate and graduate programs. While building our national and international educational reputation, I see the Dr. P. Phillips School of Real Estate being an integral part of the local real estate community.”

Last book read: When Markets Collide: Investment Strategies for the Age of Global Economic Change by Mohamed El-Erian. I have also co-read numerous Dick and Jane books with my daughter!

Favorite Sports Team: Besides UCF, I am a huge Alabama football fanatic and a Chicago Cubs baseball fan.

You might be surprised to learn that I: Met my wife by dating her roommate. She asked me to lunch and we got engaged two weeks later (and I was out of town one of them)! I thought of it much like a real estate transaction. I knew if she did too much due diligence she might change her mind—so I made a quick, solid offer and closed the deal!

Dr. Phillips Inc. has committed $2. 5 million, which, when combined with a state matching gift creates a $5 million endowment for the Dr. P. Phillips School of Real Estate. The endowment supports the Howard Phillips Eminent Scholar Chair in Real Estate, the Dr. P. Phillips Institute for Research and Education in Real Estate, and the Dr. P. Phillips scholarship program for real estate students.

AlumniDear CBA Alumni:

People do business with people they know and like. However, if knowing and liking someone were enough, we certainly wouldn’t be hurting for new clients or customers. The missing factor is trust, the cornerstone of any relationship, business or otherwise. When building rapport, it is customary to find a common link between two or more people. That common ground can be a great foundation for a mutually beneficial business relationship. The CBA Alumni Chapter creates an opportunity to do just that.

The chapter serves many interests and hosts several functions a year including networking opportunities, social events, a fundraising golf tournament, student-interaction programs and community-service projects. These efforts are overseen by the CBA Alumni Chapter Executive Committee, and we are always looking for new members. When working with this dedicated group of alumni, there is an enhanced opportunity to build business relationships and give back to the college and to UCF. You can read more about our golf tournament on page 11.

I hope you will join us at our next monthly executive committee meeting or alumni event and benefit from the opportunity UCF provides. Let me know if you have an interest by sending an e-mail to us at [email protected] or calling (407) 823-ALUM. Go Knights!Joseph Regenstein IV, CBA Alumni Chapter Chair

Executive decision

The Executive Development Center Moves Downtown

“Location, location, location” is not just a cliché to the staff of the UCF Executive Development Center (EDC). It is the reason they moved from the main UCF campus to downtown Orlando.

The EDC is still part of the college, but moving downtown allows them to expand programs and build partnerships with Central Florida businesses. “We relocated to be closer to the business community and position ourselves as Central Florida’s Executive Education Partner,” said Jai Ganesh, associate dean of administration and executive programs, and the mastermind behind the move. “We plan to serve as the bridge between downtown and the university, particularly the College of Business Administration. UCF Stands for Opportunity and this is our opportunity to become an integral part of the Central Florida business community,” he added.

The EDC will continue to provide leading executive education programs to both individuals and organizations, but now that the relocation has taken place, they will offer more non-degree programs as well. Additional staff has been hired to expand this area and plans are underway to present a variety of workshops and seminars in areas such as technology, innovation, business analytics, negotiation and data mining. The EDC also plans to develop a Mini-MBA certificate program in the near future.

Those attending programs at the downtown facility will be impressed with the recent renovations. The center now includes a state-of-the-art 60-seat multimedia executive classroom with two breakout rooms, as well as an auditorium with stadium seating for 150. The center supports wireless Internet and contains a fully-equipped computer lab with on-site tech support, two LCD flat-screen televisions and an executive conference room. The space is available to external organizations wishing to meet downtown. Covered parking in a safe, secure parking garage is available to all students and visitors. For more information, contact the EDC at (407) 235-3901.

Page 9: UCF Business (In The Know)

The EDC, housed in the Ying Academic Center, is located at 36 Pine Street in the heart of downtown Orlando. The center offers a full range of executive and professional MBA programs including the Executive MBA, the Professional MBA, the Professional MIS, and the Professional Master of Science in Management. In addition, the center offers non-degreed professional workshops and certificate programs.

Students will benefit from the recent renovations that include a new three-tiered executive classroom with seating for 60. The room is equipped with wireless Internet, video projection, recording capabilities and two breakout rooms.

UCF Vice President of Community Relations Helen Donegan and Dr. Jai Ganesh, associate dean of administration and executive programs, participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, representing the grand opening of the EDC.

Hall of Fame Turns 10!It all began on October 8, 1999. That’s the date when five graduates from the CBA were inducted into the inaugural Hall of Fame. With the addition of the Class of 2008, that number has risen to 50.

The program was established under the direction of Dean Thomas L. Keon. “When I started as dean, one of my first goals was to create a Hall of Fame to honor our most prestigious alumni. Induction into the program is the highest recognition given by the college,” said Keon.

Each spring, a nominating committee selects the next class. Inductees must be graduates of the CBA and highly successful in their careers. Further, they must demonstrate a strong commitment to UCF, specifically the business school. “Hall of Fame inductees give back to the college by serving as mentors to our students and hiring our graduates,” said Keon.

As the CBA continues to expand, so does the Hall of Fame. “Although it’s 10 years old, in some ways I think we’re just getting started. The quality of our programs and our students continue to improve each year, which makes a business degree from UCF even more valuable,” said Keon.

Nominations to the Hall of Fame are accepted throughout the year. To nominate someone, please contact Joanne Chive, director of communications, at [email protected] or (407) 823-5782.

Biz CentralGraduate Business Programs Is Now On Facebook and LinkedInAre you interested in learning the latest news about our graduate programs? If so, we just made it easier. The Graduate Business Programs has launched pages on Facebook and LinkedIn, two of the most prominent social networking sites for college students and young professionals. The social networking initiative, one of the first of its kind at UCF, is intended to promote our MBA program as well as other available graduate-level curricula. Graduate Business Programs uses the highly-trafficked Web services to rapidly disseminate information about upcoming information sessions and new programs to interested parties.

CBA Reaccredited by AACSB InternationalLast spring, the College of Business Administration achieved reaffirmation of accreditation from AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Less than one-third of U.S. business school programs meet the rigorous standards of AACSB International accreditation. As part of the reaffirmation process, the college was visited and evaluated by a peer review team made up of business school deans from other universities. “I am pleased that outside business school administrators are impressed with our college and recognize the strength of our faculty, programs, and students. Our AACSB reaffirmation validates our commitment to providing quality education,” said CBA Dean Thomas L. Keon.

Joust Winners Continue To Grow CompanyAs grand prize winners of the 2008 Joust Business Plan Competition, the founders of the Web site GroupTable.com earned the opportunity to become clients of the UCF Technology Incubator for one year. GroupTable.com was created by business students David Brim, Carl Henderson and Scott Wall to help manage their group projects and study groups more effectively. It is a Web-based software specifically designed to help student groups improve their document management, communication and project planning. With the support of the Incubator, the group is working hard to expand their business, which has

been focused primarily at UCF. They are currently making enhancements and plan to launch the site statewide later this year. Be sure to check it out at www.grouptable.com.

IEC Produces Quarterly Economic ForecastsIn these uncertain economic times, one thing is clear: the two comprehensive economic forecasts produced each quarter by the Institute for Economic Competitiveness (IEC) have become a valuable tool for long-term planners in both the private and public sectors. The forecasts, based on the research of Dr. Sean Snaith, director of the IEC, address many critical issues facing consumers such as the housing market, energy prices and unemployment rates. The publications have proven quite popular and have brought tremendous national recognition to the IEC as well as the college. The U.S. Forecast provides updated economic information that is vital to the academic, government and business communities across the nation. The Florida & Metro Forecast is a comprehensive, quarterly forecast of the Florida economy and 12 metropolitan areas including: Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Ocala, Deltona-Daytona Beach, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Lakeland, Orlando-Kissimmee, Palm Bay-Melbourne, Naples-Marco Island, and Miami-Fort Lauderdale. Past forecasts can be found at www.bus.ucf.edu/hitec/.

CBA Student Awarded Truman ScholarshipCongratulations to CBA student Lalita Booth for being named the first-ever Truman scholar from UCF. Booth, who double majors in finance and accounting, was recognized by the H. Truman Scholarship Foundation as one of just 65 outstanding college student leaders in the nation devoted to public service. Each scholarship provides up to $30,000 for graduate study. Booth was selected on the basis of leadership potential, intellectual ability and the likelihood that she will “make a difference.” In the past, she has experienced homelessness, a broken welfare system and single motherhood. Having overcome many obstacles, she now wants to help others. She has created Lighthouse for Dreams, a local high school outreach

CBA Alum Phil Dalhausser, ‘02, Brings Home The Gold!Phil Dalhausser, ‘02 (Business Administration), and his partner Todd Rogers won a gold medal in beach volleyball at the recent Olympic Games in Beijing. The team beat Brazil in three sets to win the gold. Born in Switzerland, Dalhausser, who is 6’9”, grew up in Daytona, and did not start playing volleyball until his senior year in high school. While at UCF, he played on the club volleyball team.

News From the SBDC at UCFEunice Choi has been named the Regional Director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UCF. Choi, a certified business analyst, has been with the SBDC for 10 years. During her tenure, her assistance to SBDC clients has resulted in a substantial economic impact for many small businesses, including total capital formation of over $43 million. She has counseled more than 1600 businesses and taught more than 130 workshops.

In other SBDC news, for the first time in its 28-year history, the Center has formed an advisory board consisting of eight members from the Central Florida community. The board meets bi-annually and provides recommendations for program development, promoting SBDC services, advising on funding issues and supporting legislative activities.

The SBDC is part of our college and the Florida Small Business Development Center Network. The main office is at the Disney Entrepreneur Center in downtown Orlando. The SBDC serves an eight-county area that includes Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Sumter, and Volusia counties, and is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration.

CBA Alumni Chapter Annual Golf Tournament Raises Money For ScholarshipsThe signature event for the CBA Alumni Chapter is an annual g o l f t ou r n a m e nt created more than 10 years ago. This event makes it possible for the chapter to sponsor programs to benefit our students, alumni and community throughout the year.

In the last three years alone, the group has raised more than $42,000. From 2006 to 2007, the amount raised more than doubled. As a result, the chapter was recognized by the UCF Alumni Association with the “Event of the Year” award.

Plans are underway for the 11th annual tournament, which will be held on May 1, 2009, at Rio Pinar Country Club in east Orlando. A number of event sponsorships are available, and this is an excellent opportunity to reach the alumni and community business leaders who will be attending the event. The field of 120 expected golfers will represent a wide range of industries such as accounting firms, financial institutions, theme parks, healthcare organizations, and high-tech firms. Get in on the fun the day of the event by sponsoring a foursome to play in the tournament!
