From the DeanWhile our business school is large, we prefer to emphasize our quality over quantity. This is actually an easy task since we are frequently recognized for our top-notch programs and our exceptional students, faculty and alumni.

Our undergraduate program was recently ranked the number one public business school for return on investment by Bloomberg BusinessWeek. We are proud of this accomplishment and continuously strive to offer the highest level of education at the lowest possible costs to our students.

The effort has paid off. Our students consistently win awards, achieve high test scores and are fully prepared to enter the competitive global market upon graduation. Best of all, they enter the job market with minimal debt from student loans.

You can learn about the type of outstanding students we attract by reading our cover story. Lauren Rehm, Shelly Frick and Stephanie Koffler were named to the Order of Pegasus Class of 2010, UCF's most prestigious student honor. Their accomplishments are amazing and all three boast that the college played a vital role in helping them achieve their goals.

Our faculty members are often quoted in the local, state and national media. They serve on numerous editorial boards and have won many honors and awards. You can read about some of them in our Faculty News section.

Finally, as you can tell on page 9, our alumni are spread out across the nation as we have graduates living in all 50 states. I am delighted that so many of them keep in contact with us, hire our graduates, provide internship opportunities and stay involved. Judging by the popularity of our website and our social networking sites, our graduates know that no matter where they live, the UCF College of Business Administration is just one click away!

We are still a young business school. I am confident that as we continue to mature, we will continue to soar. Stay tuned!

Ken White and Duane Davis, both tenured faculty members, have worked at FTU/UCF for a combined 74 years and have taught more than 44,000 students. Clearly, they have experienced countless changes over the years. But as both men prepare to retire, the college is about to experience a change as well.

For the first time in college history, Ken White will no longer be a full-time faculty member in the Economics Department. White is one of the charter faculty members and has been with the college since it opened in 1968. He joined UCF (which was known as FTU then) because he thought it would be exciting to be part of a new university.

When he began, he could not have foreseen that the university would grow as rapidly as it did. “I think that first year UCF had less than 2,000 students,” he said. Today, UCF is the third largest university in the nation with an enrollment that surpasses 53,000. When White joined UCF, the College of Business Administration had just 12 faculty members. Today, we have more than 150.

White has many fond memories, but it was working with students that he enjoyed the most. Throughout his 42 year career at UCF, he estimates he has taught 35,000-40,000 students with more than 100,000 contact hours! The good news is that he is ready to teach a few more.

While he is retiring from teaching full-time, he has agreed to teach a few EMBA classes downtown at the Executive Development Center.

Duane Davis, a professor in the Marketing Department, has also had a huge impact on the college. He joined the college in 1978 and was responsible for developing the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies. He is a Fulbright Scholar and served as Chair of the Marketing Department. His research areas are services marketing, marketing strategy and business research.

Davis estimates he has taught 9,000 UCF students over the years. He most recently taught at the Brevard Campus. He states that his best memories are “the students, the people and others that I have learned from throughout my career here. I appreciate all the opportunities that have been available to me.”

Unlike White, Davis will not be teaching again, and has been named Professor Emeritus. What are his retirement plans? “Enjoy the rest of my life through travel and learning through experience. Experience other aspects of life that I probably ignored in my focus strictly on marketing!” he said.

The two were honored recently at a retirement reception hosted by the college.

New Real Estate Program is an Easy Sale! The Master of Science in Real Estate program, which begins in June, is expected to have an inaugural class of 25 or more. This is another indicator clearly establishing that this is the right program at the right time in Central Florida!

The program was designed by the Dr. P. Phillips School of Real Estate as a flagship graduate program that prepares students for senior positions in residential and commercial real estate brokerage and appraisal, development and mortgage brokerage.

“The Central Florida region is a prime spot for commercial and residential real estate development. Graduates from this program will be well-positioned to fill a niche area in this market,” said Thomas L. Keon, dean of the CBA.

Classes will be taught in the professional format at the UCF Executive Development Center (EDC) and students will go through the 16-month program as a cohort. The curriculum combines a unique business core consisting of finance, accounting and marketing courses with advanced coursework in real estate. Students will earn 30 credit hours during five sessions and will be well-prepared to obtain Florida Real Estate brokerage and appraisal licenses.

The Dr. P. Phillips School of Real Estate was established in 2005. Dr. Phillips Inc. committed $2.5 million, which combined with a state matching gift, create a $5 million endowment for the Dr. P. Phillips School of Real Estate. The endowment supports the Howard Phillips Eminent Scholar Chair in Real Estate, the Dr. P. Phillips Institute for Research and Education in Real Estate, and the Dr. P. Phillips scholarship program for real estate students.

Inaugural Real Estate Presentation Featured Orange County Mayor More than 200 business and community leaders attended “Repositioning Real Estate: Political and Economic Trends,” that was hosted by the CBA's Dr. P. Phillips Institute for Research and Education in Real Estate. Held at the EDC, the event had Orange County Mayor Richard T. Crotty as keynote speaker.

The presentation was moderated by Randy Anderson, Howard Phillips Eminent Scholar Chair and John Crossman, President of Crossman and Company. Panelists included Robert Carmichael, senior vice president of Key Bank; Paul Ellis, president, CNL Commercial Real Estate; and Cynthia Shelton, director of investment sales at Colliers International and past president of the Florida Association of Realtors.

Attendees learned about the status of both residential and commercial real estate. While Florida has been hit hard with foreclosures, there are signs of improvement as inventory levels are decreasing and pending sales are on the rise. Commercial real estate always trails behind the residential sector by 12 to 18 months, so the commercial market is not expected to rebound until late 2010 or sometime in 2011.

Top Students Receive Top AwardAt a university with more than 53,000 students, sometimes it can be difficult for someone to stand out. However, that is not the case for three business students. Their hard work, leadership skills and dedication to both UCF and the community have earned them UCF's most prestigious student award.

Shelly Frick, Stephanie Koffler and Lauren Rehm have been named to the Order of Pegasus Class of 2010. The trio was among just 16 UCF students who were inducted this year. All three are also members of the President's Leadership Council.

Shelly Frick, a native of Jacksonville, will earn her MBA in August. She earned her B.S.B.A. in Finance from UCF and has won numerous student awards. She served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and represented UCF in Conference USA. Upon graduation she will continue working as an internal

audit consultant at Protiviti Independent Risk Consulting, and will eventually return to academia to pursue her Ph.D. She plans to become a Professor of Finance. No matter where she ends up though, UCF will always be in her heart. “I am so thankful for all this university has given me. I truly bleed black and gold and will always be a Knight wherever my future will take me!”

Stephanie Koffler is from Miami and recently earned degrees in both economics and political science. She is involved in many clubs and activities and has won numerous awards including the Charles N. and Frances Millican Scholarship for best exemplified leadership within the senior class. She will attend law school at the University of Florida this fall and plans to be an international human rights attorney. She feels UCF definitely prepared her for her career. “UCF has empowered me to excel academically and personally through a commitment to campus leadership. My experiences have taught me to consistently strive for excellence, providing me an invaluable foundation for my future.”

Lauren Rehm recently graduated with a B.S.B.A. in Marketing and a minor in Legal Studies. A native of Palm Harbor, Rehm has won many awards including the Annual Bernard C. Kissel Outstanding Speaker Competition. She also received the 2010 Founder's Day Award from the college. Like Koffler, she also plans to attend law school at the University of Florida this fall. “Because of my experiences here, I have a true conviction to live a life of constant discovery. I never want to stop seeking out opportunities, taking chances and learning new things. I know the confidence and passion I

“I am so honored to represent the College of Business Administration as an Order of Pegasus recipient. So much of my UCF career has been defined by my incredible experience as a business student. It is a wonderful privilege to be inducted into the Order of Pegasus knowing that the college has played such a vital role in helping me reach my goals.”

developed as a UCF Knight will serve me well in law school and in the future as an attorney.”

Induction into the Order of Pegasus is highly competitive and only the most outstanding students are considered. Students must be nominated by a top university administrator. A selection committee reviews and assesses each candidate based on a personal interview as well as:

• University involvement and leadership• Academic achievement• Publications and/or research experiences

(graduate students only)• Community service• Essay regarding the impact to UCF on the

student's life• Recommendations

A photograph of the inductees has been added to the wall of the Pegasus Lounge, which is located on the second floor of the Student Union overlooking the Pegasus Ballroom. Frick, Koffler and Rehm received commemorative medals (as shown on the cover), Student Government Association scholarships and lifetime memberships to the UCF Alumni Association.

“I am delighted that Shelly, Lauren and Stephanie have been recognized for their hard work and leadership abilities. They have taken advantage of all the opportunities that UCF has to offer. As a result, they are well-prepared to excel in their future studies and enjoy successful careers.”

Biz CentralBusinessWeek: Our Business School is Number One for Return on Investment! Undergraduate business students wishing to get the most value for their money should attend the UCF College of Business Administration according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The publication ranked UCF the number one public business school for return on investment for 2010. The research was based on annual tuition spent and the median base salary students receive upon graduation. Unlike students that attend other schools, UCF business students often graduate with less debt, allowing them to start saving immediately upon graduation. “This ranking is important to us, especially in this economy. We provide a quality education, taught by distinguished faculty at a price students can afford,” said Thomas L. Keon, dean. “The UCF College of Business Administration is a true value for students preparing to enter the business world.”

Princeton Review: UCF One of Nation's Top 50 ‘Best Values’The Princeton Review has joined Kiplinger Magazine in selecting the University of Central Florida as one of the best educational values in the country. UCF continues to receive noteworthy national rankings, including recognition last year from U.S. News & World Report as a top 20 national university for students graduating with the least amount of debt, in the magazine's “Great Schools, Great Prices” category. In addition, U.S. News & World Report named UCF one of the top five national universities to watch. UCF was the only Florida school listed in the category “Top Up-and-Coming Schools,” which includes national universities that “recently made the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.”

Professional Selling Program Receives National RecognitionThe UCF Professional Selling Program, a nationally recognized program in the Department of Marketing, has been named one of the “Top University Sales Programs” by Selling Power Magazine. The program's success is derived from an innovative curriculum, competitive recruitment and selection of UCF's top sales students. Students enrolled in the program receive a hands-on learning experience that recruiting organizations have equated to one-to-two years of industry sales experience.

SBDC Repeats As Millionaire's Club MemberFor the second year in a row, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UCF was inducted into UCF's “Millionaires Club” by the Office of Research and Commercialization. The sole criteria for induction is raising external sponsored research funding of $1 million or more during a given fiscal year.

MBA Students Win National SBI CompetitionMBA students Tammra Baron, Rayan Kaissi and Lindsay Tompkins placed first in the Graduate Specialized Category of the 2010 Project of the Year National Competition sponsored by the Small Business Institute® (SBI). The purpose of the competition is to recognize outstanding student work in consulting. The SBI® program is managed by the SBDC at UCF, in conjunction with the college and is offered as a graduate-level elective course. Students enrolled in the class provide management consulting services to local small businesses. Each student team has direct contact with the client and produces a professional case report.

Leading Business Execs From Spain Visited EDCThe CBA's Executive Development Center (EDC) hosted about 50 business professionals from Madrid University's Executive MBA Program during the spring semester. While in town, the students learned about Central Florida's history and development, the challenges and economic impact of area tourism and the global economy's effects on Orlando. In addition, the group took a behind-the-scenes tour of EPCOT, SeaWorld, and Indra Systems Inc., and met with CBA faculty members and leaders from the Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau Inc., Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission, the Disney Entrepreneur Center and the UCF Business Incubation Program.

The visit was part of the EDC's International Residency Program partnership. This is the third time the EDC has hosted the Escuela de Organización International (EOI), which was founded by the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Education to provide engineers with management and organization skills. The EDC is rapidly gaining a reputation as a destination to host international residencies for foreign universities.

CBA Students Inducted Into Beta Gamma SigmaMelanie Fernandez, ’86 and ’91 and a member of the CBA Hall of Fame, was the guest speaker at the 2010 Beta Gamma Sigma Induction Ceremony. Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student can receive in a baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate program at an AACSB accredited school. Inductees for 2010 included 13 juniors, 21 seniors, 18 graduate students, and two doctoral students.

CBA Alumnus Andrew B. Titen, ’75, Spoke At Fall CommencementAndrew B. Titen, ’75, gave the keynote address during the Fall CBA commencement ceremony in December. He has served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Bisk Education since 1992. The company is one of the nation's largest online providers of degree and certificate programs from the country's leading universities, offering lifelong learning solutions that allow working adults to reach their personal and professional goals through education. Titen earned a B.S.B.A. in Accounting and was inducted into the CBA Hall of Fame in 2005. He is a member of the Dean's Executive Council.

COBA Pass Wins AwardThe college has won a Certificate of Merit Award from the National Academic Advising Association for implementing COBA Pass, a virtual queuing system that enables business students to reserve time slots to meet with an academic advisor. COBA Pass is also available for students who seek to avoid waiting to take an exam in the testing lab. This is the second time that COBA Pass has been nationally recognized. Earlier this year, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators presented the college with a Bronze Excellence Award. “The success of the COBA Pass program depends heavily on the efforts of our staff, both advising and the Technology Resource Center. This recognition is a testament to their hard work and dedication,” said Randall Brumfield, director of Undergraduate Student Services.
