Students of UCD,A warm welcome from the Career Development Centre to the first Business, Finance & Management Careers Fair.We continue to read in the press about economic instability in the eurozone and continuing uncertainty amongst potential investors makes our economic recovery challenging. While there can be no doubt that graduates face difficult times in sourcing and securing graduate career opportunities, it is the case that many employers are recruiting and some are taking large numbers of graduates often from a diverse range of academic subject areas. Indeed, sectors such as accountancy have experienced great difficulty in filling the vacancies they have and many are once again recruiting from mainland Europe to grow their graduate workforce.

My message to UCD’s students is to be proactive - ask questions at our Fairs, resist the temptation to simply collect recruitment brochures. Use tools such as Career Report (www.gradireland.com) to identify careers which may suit you and be creative in how you go about job searching. Networking, responding to advertised vacancies and accessing the hidden job market all have a part to play in effective job search.
