A Gateway to the Future

It is our sincere pleasure to present

UC Santa Barbara’s Honor Roll

of Donors for 2007-08, which

represents an unprecedented outpouring

of dedication and commitment to

the overall excellence of the campus.

Alumni, parents, and friends contributed

$81.4 million in philanthropic gifts to

The Campaign for UC Santa Barbara,

exceeding the previous year’s record

fund-raising achievement by more than

$10.5 million.

With this extraordinary show of

support, the campus surpassed the

$500 million milestone in The Campaign

for UC Santa Barbara. The overwhelming

spirit of unity that the campaign

continues to engender reflects a shared

vision and an enduring partnership among the entire UCSB family. Although we are justly

proud of these achievements and what they represent to the growth of the campus, it is

important to add that our work has just begun. We face challenging times ahead, which

will require continued financial support of the university.

Together, we are helping to transform UC Santa Barbara. Since the campaign began

in 2000, your gifts have yielded a truly bountiful harvest: 54 new endowed chairs,

129 graduate fellowships, premier facilities, and campus landmarks equal to the growing

reputation of one of the world’s leading research universities. The Henley Gate, together

with Steck Circle and Kirby Crossing, forms UCSB’s stunning new East Entrance. This

gateway to learning welcomes all who pass through it and conveys the splendor, quality,

and promise of our campus.

UC Santa Barbara is deeply grateful to each and every one of you for your devotion

and generosity. Together, we are forging a new period of distinction for UCSB. This is an

achievement of which we can all be proud, one that makes us confident that our campus

will reach even greater heights in the years to come.

UC Santa Barbara is proud to recognize the thousands of alumni, parents, and friends,

as well as corporations, foundations, and organizations, who made generous contributions

to The Campaign for UC Santa Barbara in the year ending June 30, 2008. Their philan-

thropic gifts will enhance teaching and research, strengthen existing areas of excellence,

and make it possible to develop new, innovative academic programs.

To all of our supporters, especially those listed in the Honor Roll of Donors that begins

on page 14, UCSB expresses its sincere gratitude for your willingness to invest in the future

of the campus. on the pages that follow are just a few examples of the ways in which the

generosity of UC Santa Barbara’s benefactors supports academic excellence and creates

new opportunities for learning and discovery.

Philanthropy at Work

Steck Circle, a striking new addition to the East Entrance to the campus, was supported by a gift from Fredric E. Steck, Class of ’67, who chairs the UC Santa Barbara Foundation board. The circle displays a “world triad,” representing heaven, earth, and humankind.

The Bernard osher Foundation, of

San Francisco, has established a

$1 million endowment that will

provide ongoing scholarship support for

California Community College students

who transfer to UC Santa Barbara. The

gift is part of the foundation’s

$20 million educational initiative to

support endowed scholarship programs

at 19 University of California and

California State University campuses.

California community colleges

serve as a gateway to the state’s four-

year universities. Thirty percent of

UC graduates are community college

transfers.

Approximately 1,400 students

transfer to UCSB each fall, the majority

from community colleges. The osher

scholarships will be awarded to incoming

UCSB students who have graduated

Creating Educational

Opportunities

from a California Community College

within the last four years, reached

either the junior or senior level, and

demonstrate financial need. Each

scholarship recipient will receive $5,000

per academic year to cover educational

fees or tuition.

The Bernard osher Foundation

seeks to improve the quality of life

through support for higher education

and the arts. it provides post-secondary

scholarship funding to colleges and

universities across the nation, with

special attention to reentry students.

in addition, the foundation supports

a growing national lifelong learning

network for adults, including the osher

Lifelong Learning institute at UCSB,

which provides high quality, adult

learning courses designed for mature

learners.

Osher Foundation scholarships will provide support for community college transfer students such as Maricela Morales, Vincent Torres, and Stephanie Wissner, who now attend UC Santa Barbara.

More than 370,000 aerial

images — a pictorial

odyssey spanning 65 major

metropolitan areas in the United States

at the turn of the 21st Century — has

been donated to UCSB by pacific

Western Aerial Surveys, of Santa

Barbara.

Valued at more than $14.3 million,

the Citipix Collection is unparalleled

in its size, focus, and resolution, said

Larry Carver, director of the Map and

imagery Laboratory in Davidson Library,

where the collection will be housed. no

other comparable collection of aerial

photography exists for this time period.

The gift from UCSB parents Michael

Kambitsch and Susan Lord is the largest

of The Campaign for UC Santa Barbara.

The Citipix Collection will enhance

the distinction of UCSB’s imagery

collection, already one of the most

extensive in the U. S. academic

community. The archive of color-stereo

images taken between 1999-2002

provides clear detail at up to six inches

Gaining Perspective on Our Urban Historyoff the ground. The collection consists of

original film negatives.

Because aerial photographs are

shot straight down, they are extremely

accurate. As a landscape is altered over

time, mosaics of such photographs

become a valuable resource for

geologists tracing earthquake faults,

biologists, historians, archaeologists,

land use planners, engineers, attorneys

settling property disputes, pollution

monitoring, and public health officials

tracking disease vectors.

This bird’s-eye view of Sacramento is one of more than 370,000 aerial images given to UCSB’s Map and Imagery Laboratory that provide a snapshot of U.S. urban history at the turn of the 21st century.

An endowed scholarship fund

for Men’s and Women’s Tennis

at UC Santa Barbara has

been established with a $2.2 million

contribution from an anonymous

donor. The gift, the largest ever to

intercollegiate Athletics, will enable

UCSB to attract outstanding student

athletes to campus. The tennis teams

are two of the most successful in the Big

West Conference.

The UCSB men’s team has won

six Big West championships, including

the last three in a row, and five out

of the last seven competitions. it has

also advanced to nine nCAA team

championship tournaments.

The Gaucho women’s program has

won six Big West championships and

Supporting Outstanding Athletesadvanced to the nCAA tournament

twice. it has also sent numerous players

to the nCAA individual tournaments.

UCSB’s intercollegiate Athletics

program includes 19 teams that compete

at the nCAA Division i level and is

considered a leader in the Big West

Conference. it has won the league’s

Commissioner’s Cup six times in the

past seven years, an honor given to

the all-sports conference champion.

The national Association of Collegiate

Directors of Athletics also consistently

ranks Gaucho athletics among the top

100 nCAA Division 1 programs.

The graduation rate for UC Santa

Barbara student athletes is the highest in

the Big West Conference.

UC Santa Barbara has received

a $3 million gift from William

K. Bowes, Jr. to establish an

endowed chair to attract an eminent

researcher to lead the campus’s new

Center for Stem Cell Biology and

Engineering. The long-term goal of the

collaborative interdisciplinary research

center is the development of stem cell-

based therapeutics for a range of human

diseases.

The endowed chair will be named

in memory of Bowes’s mother, Ruth

Garland, a distinguished physician who

was one of the first women to graduate

from the Stanford School of Medicine,

where she later taught. Garland was

born in Santa Barbara and raised in ojai.

Research in the new center

addresses challenging problems in stem

cell biology related to the molecular

mechanisms of pluripotency (the

ability of the stem cell to become any

Advancing Stem Cell Research

other type of cell in the body), self

renewal and differentiation, using both

human embryonic stem cells, induced

pluripotent stem cells, and stem cells

in simpler organisms. Bioengineering

research will investigate novel methods

for stem cell growth, differentiation,

sorting, and delivery.

Construction of a state-of-the-

art research facility is under way with

funding from the California institute for

Regenerative Medicine. The center is a

member of the Southern California Stem

Cell Scientific Collaborative, a research

partnership dedicated to advancing

discovery in the emerging field.

Pictured above is a human embryonic stem cell colony with a fluorescent stain. Scientists are using stem cells to understand the basic biology of pluripotency, the ability of a stem cell to become any other type of cell in the body.

Researchers at UCSB’s new interdisciplinary Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering are collaborating to develop stem-cell based therapeutics for a range of human diseases. Co-directors of the center are UCSB biologists Dennis Clegg (left) and James Thomson, an international pioneer in stem cell research, and mechanical engineer Hyongsok Soh (right).

For more than 20 years, pioneering

physicists from UC Santa Barbara’s

Kavli institute for Theoretical

physics (KiTp) rented a house owned by

Ann Rice and her late husband, Myron,

while attending the institute’s lengthy

collaborative research programs.

Annually, nearly 1,000 international

scientists visit the KiTp to take part in

its specialized programs, but many with

families cannot attend because of the

prohibitive cost of relocation, childcare,

housing, and transportation.

Through an innovative planned

gift, Ann Rice, a former UCSB faculty

member, donated her rental property

to the campus, and with the proceeds

from its sale established the Drs. Ann

Attracting Top

Physicists

and Myron Rice Family Fund. The $1.4

million endowment will provide financial

assistance to KiTp families — especially

those in which the physicist is also

the mother of young children — so

that these scientists can take part in

the months-long, intense research

experience that is the hallmark of the

institute.

The Rice gift has enabled the KiTp

to strengthen its mission as a retreat

facility for the advancement of science

by addressing the challenges of modern

parenting and two-career families. The

generous gift will also provide Rice with

a steady stream of income during her

lifetime.

The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics brings together leading international theorists to advance research in the field. Physicists Massimo Vergasola, Institute Pasteur (left); Roya Zandi, UC Riverside; and Herve Isambert, Institut Curie, are among the 1,000 scientists attending KITP programs this year.

Preserving Our Cultural Legacy

The University Art Museum has

received two major collections:

156 photographs by the

legendary artist Andy Warhol (1928-

1987), a founder of pop Art whose

paintings and prints of movie stars, soup

cans, and other icons of America made

him one of the most famous artists in

the world; and the complete archives of

Southern California architect Edward A.

Killingsworth (1917-2004), who achieved

international prominence during the

1960s with his signature light-weight

wooden post-and-lintel residences

and commercial buildings that left an

indelible mark on the regional and global

landscape.

The Andy Warhol Foundation made

an unprecedented gift of more than

28,500 original Warhol photographs

valued in excess of $28 million to

museums nationwide to enable a wide

range of people to view and study this

important yet relatively unknown body

of Warhol’s work. The UCSB gift consists

of polaroid and black-and-white images

of luminaries from the art, design, and

fashion worlds, including Debbie Harry,

Halston, and victor Hugo, as well as

selected landscape and abstract images.

The Killingsworth archive is a

significant addition to the museum’s

renowned Architecture and Design

Collection, which contains the work of

more than 110 designers and documents

the built environment of California and

the Southwest.

A 1959 rendering of the Hilton Inn in Amarillo, Texas by the late Southern California architect Edward A. Killingsworth is part of his archive, which is now housed in the University Art Museum’s prized Architecture and Design Collection.

The Andy Warhol Foundation has donated a relatively unknown collection of photographs by the late Pop artist, including this 1980 Polaroid image of singer-songwriter Debbie Harry.

Honor Roll of Donors

Lancaster SocietyUC Santa Barbara is grateful for the extraordinary support of our alumni, parents, friends, trustees of the UC Santa Barbara Foundation, corporations, and foundations who have contributed $100,000 or more to the university over time. Through their commitment and leadership, these distinguished members of the Lancaster Society have helped build the university’s reputation for teaching, research, and public service. The Society is named for Louis and Winifred Lancaster, civic-minded philanthropists deeply committed to the public partnership that is at the heart of UC Santa Barbara. During their lifetimes, they helped establish the UC Santa Barbara Foundation and worked tirelessly to build meaningful bridges between the university and the larger community. Their vision is sustained through the loyal generosity of today’s members of the Lancaster Society, celebrated for their contributions to an enduring foundation for excellence at UC Santa Barbara.

Chancellor’s CouncilThe Chancellor’s Council was established in 1975 by a core group of donors who believed that ongoing annual support was essential to building and maintaining excellence at UC Santa Barbara. Since that time, it has grown into the university’s premier annual giving program, recognizing donors of $1,000 or more. These gifts may be unrestricted, for use where the need is greatest, or restricted to support a specific department or program. UC Santa Barbara honors and celebrates alumni, friends, parents, and trustees of the UC Santa Barbara Foundation for their ongoing partnership and commitment to the future of this great university.
