Nick Gravish attendedCOSMOS at UC Irvine back in2000. His cluster focused on

Advanced Mathematics. Sincethen, Nick has received his B.S.

in Physics from UC SantaBarbara & his Ph.D. in Physicswith a minor in Mechanics ofMaterials from Georgia Tech

School of Physics. Fast forwarda few years, Gravish is now an

Assistant Professor in theMechanical and Aerospace

Engineering Department at UCSan Diego and an instructor at

UC San Diego COSMOS forCluster 10: Robot Inventors.

Cosmos Year #1 and I’mhooked! Each time the teams

put on one of their small scalestructures on the shake table

for testing , I could just feel theroom slowly fill with anxiety

and excitement as theearthquake intensified. Then,all of a sudden, “crack!!” and

the structure would comecrashing down, and the roomwould break out in laughter.

These hands-on activities withCluster 4 and these smileswere the highlights of my

summer! I can’t wait to playagain next year!

My first summer with Cluster2 was amazing! The studentskept on impressing me withinnovative solutions for their

protective devices to savewater balloons from breakingupon impact when landing on

a bed of nails; their kineticsculpture designs containingeverything from catapults to

carousels; and smartlyprogrammed control systems.It was a delight to work with

and get to know all thestudents and the Cluster

Assistants. I very much lookforward to being part ofCOSMOS in the future.

NEW COSMOS FACULTY

SCOTT PATTERSON

The COSMOS program has given me newways to connect learning in my classroom. I

work at a project-based school, andCOSMOS is entirely hands-on and project

oriented in Cluster 10: Robot Inventors. Wehave launched a robotics class based on

what I learned from my faculty and TAs inCOSMOS. The students you get to work within COSMOS are ready for a challenge, so it's

wonderful to work with faculty who canreally push them to the edge of their

knowledge.

COSMOS is a fantastic way to spendthe summer for any STEM teacher.

The collaboration with faculty,amazing students, and truly

enjoyable environment make itsomething I hope to be a part of for

many summers to come!

COSMOS students participating in Cluster1: Computers in Everyday Life were

interviewed for this video, which highlightsprojects they were working on. This is a

great snapshot into the academic side ofCOSMOS and offers a glimpse of theamazing opportunities offered in ourprogram: "High school students from

around the country spent part of theirsummer learning and living at UC San

Diego. During the COSMOS program, theylearn from professors in the Computer

Science and Engineering department.Students get to create apps, robots and

lifelong memories. Some even turnedbananas into a piano."

Kritin is a fourth year Bioengineering:Bioinformatics major with minors inCognitive Science and Japanese Studies atUCSD. He does research on algorithms forclassifying brain activity for brain-computer interfaces, but he also cares alot about outreach and sciencecommunication. As a result, he writes forthe Jacobs School of Engineering, does K-12 STEM education projects and mostimportantly TAs for COSMOS (go Cluster7!). Other hobbies include arranging andconducting music for his orchestra andcross country racing.

In Loving Memory ofJennifer Dutton

Jennifer (Jen) Dutton served as a COSMOS RA forSummer 2017. She was in charge of Cluster 1:

Computers in Everyday Life and Suite 400. Jen, only23, passed away from fighting a courageous battle

with a rare immunodeficiency called HLH. Shetouched so many lives with her warm and cheerfulpresence and she will be greatly missed. We would

like to dedicated this newsletter in her memory.
