IntroductionCOSMOSWorks® is a design analysis automation application fully integrated with SolidWorks®. This software uses the Finite Element Method (FEM) to simulate the working conditions of your designs and predict their behavior. FEM requires the solution of large systems of equations. Powered by fast solvers, COSMOSWorks makes it possible for designers to quickly check the integrity of their designs and search for the optimum solution. COSMOSWorks comes in several bundles to satisfy your analysis needs. It shortens time to market by testing your designs on the computer instead of expensive and time-consuming field tests.

COSMOSMotion™ lets you make sure your assembly mechanisms will work before you build them. Fully embedded inside of SolidWorks, COSMOSMotion enables engineers to size motors/actuators, determine power consumption, layout linkages, develop cams, understand gear drives, size springs/dampers, and determine how contacting parts behave.

COSMOSFloWorks™ combines a high level of functionality and accuracy with ease-of-use. Fully embedded inside of SolidWorks, COSMOSFloWorks is perfect for the engineer who needs flow analysis, but is not necessarily an expert in the field of fluid simulation. Whether you are developing an automobile, the wing of an airplane, or an exhaust valve, using COSMOSFloWorks in the product development cycle can help you build a better product in less time.

Installation

Introduction

This chapter describes how to install the COSMOSWorks application and related products using Microsoft® Windows® Installer (WI) technology. The following sections serve different installation types:

Section 1: describes tasks that the typical COSMOSWorks user performs - the installation, modification, and removal of the COSMOSWorks application.

Section 2: describes tasks that a system administrator performs - the creation of administrative images on a server machine.

Section 3: describes how a system administrator can install and manage the COSMOS license service on a server machine.

Section 4: describes tasks that allow for silent installations of COSMOS products.

Notes:

COSMOSWorks, COSMOSMotion, and COSMOSFloWorks are add-ins to SolidWorks. After installing an application, you can enable or disable it by clicking Tools, Add-In.

This chapter is a guide to installing the COSMOSWorks application using WI. It is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion of the WI technology. For more information on WI, see Microsoft’s Windows Installer documentation.

The WI term, administrative image, is analogous to the InstallShield term, server installation.

SolidWorks 2006 SP0.0 or later must be installed on your computer before attempting to install COSMOSWorks 2006.

The installation of COSMOSWorks interface is required for all COSMOSWorks bundles and add-on options except COSMOSFloWorks, COSMOSMotion and COSMOSEMS.

Section 1: For the Typical COSMOSWorks User

Installation typesYou can install the COSMOSWorks application using one of the following methods:

Individual installation of the COSMOSWorks application files on the user's computer. The COSMOSWorks application is installed directly on the local hard drive. This installation takes up disk space on the user's computer and must be updated locally when a new service pack is available. However, executing the program is faster because it is not impacted by network traffic.

Client installation on the user's computer that references the COSMOSWorks application files on a remote server. The COSMOSWorks application files are not copied to the client computer, but an installation is performed to configure the license if necessary and create the registry entries, shortcuts etc. The user runs the COSMOSWorks application over the network using an administrative image on a remote server. This saves disk space on the local computer, but program execution is slower with higher network traffic.

The Installation SourceYou can install COSMOSWorks and other COSMOS applications in one of two ways:

From a COSMOSWorks CD.

From the administrative image on a server across a network. Your system administrator must create the administrative image and inform you of its location.

To install on a local computer from the CD:1 Insert the COSMOSWorks Disk into your CD-ROM drive. The setup program

starts automatically. Read the Welcome message and click Next. The Software License Agreement window appears.

• The client installation can only be performed from an administrative image. Refer to the To install on a local computer from an administrative image section for more details.

• COSMOSMotion, COSMOSFloWorks and COSMOSDesignSTAR programs cannot reference files from a remote machine. Thus the client installation for these products copies all the program files locally on the client machine similar to an individual install.

2 Read the agreement and choose I accept the license agreement then click Next. Otherwise, click Cancel to exit the installation program. If you click Next, the COSMOS License Information window appears.

3 Follow on-screen instructions to copy program files and configure your license.

Use the Installation Tips below for any questions during installation. You may need to reboot your computer when the installation is complete.

Installation Tips

COSMOSWorks 2006 Install Choice Dialog Box

Upgrade: Select this option to upgrade your existing COSMOSWorks installation, then select the upgrade path in the list. The upgrade path list contains a list of all the paths where one or more COSMOS products are installed.

New Installation: Select this option if you wish to install COSMOSWorks and/or other COSMOS products to a new directory. Note that this option only allows installing to a new directory. Any previous installs of COSMOSWorks 2006 will be removed and replaced with files from the current setup.

COSMOSWorks Options Dialog Box

COSMOSWorks comes in several bundles and provides add-on options. The Options dialog allows you to choose the bundle you have purchased. Depending on the selected options, other COSMOS products like COSMOSM, COSMOSFloWorks, and COSMOSMotion are installed automatically.

Due to Microsoft limitations, you cannot install the COSMOSWorks applications from a remote CD-ROM drive.

When you launch each product installation (typically from a web download or browsing to the CD folder and double clicking the individual product installation), the Upgrade list will contain the product names instead of the path. If multiple versions of the product are detected, then select the appropriate product to upgrade from the list.

Whether you do an upgrade or new installation, any intermediate versions of COSMOSWorks 2006, COSMOSMotion 2006 & COSMOSFloWorks 2006 will be automatically removed. The installation allows you to have and maintain only one instance of any major release for a particular COSMOS product.

To install on a local computer from an administrative image:1 Using Windows Explorer on your local machine, map the network drive

where the administrative image of COSMOSWorks is installed. Ask your system administrator for this location.

2 Double-click the COSMOSSetup.exe file located in the drive mapped in the above step. Use the following installation tips for any questions during installation. You may need to reboot your computer when the installation is completed.

Running the COSMOSWorks ApplicationIn your Windows desktop, click Start, Programs, COSMOS 2006 Applications, COSMOSWorks 2006. You can similarly launch other COSMOS products like COSMOSMotion, COSMOSFloWorks, and COSMOSM.

Modifying, Repairing, or Removing an Installation1 In Windows, click Start, Settings, Control Panel.

2 Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

The Add/Remove Programs dialog box appears.

3 Select the appropriate COSMOS product, for example COSMOSWorks 2006.

4 Based on your operating system, click the appropriate button to modify or delete the installation. If you are modifying an installation, go to step 5; otherwise, confirm to delete the installation.

The Setup dialog box appears.

5 Click Next.

6 In the Program Maintenance dialog box, select one of the following options:

• Modify. This option simply reinstalls the application files. It is rarely used.

• Repair. To reinstall COSMOSWorks using the current installation parameters. The Repair option is useful if the COSMOSWorks installation is corrupt. Follow the on-screen instructions to repair the installation.

• Remove. To completely remove the COSMOSWorks application. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the application.

Creating an Administrative ImageTo serve the COSMOSWorks application files across a network, you create an administrative image of the COSMOSWorks application files on the server's hard drive. You can install the administrative image from any computer on the network. Browse the network for the location on the computer that will act as the server for the COSMOSWorks application. You can create an administrative image on the client computer by specifying a folder on its local hard drive.

The resulting administrative image is a tree of folders that contains all the distributed files in an uncompressed format. The administrative image occupies a large amount of space on the server's hard drive. Once the administrative image is created, you can start additional installations on other computers in the network from this server location.

Client computers can access the administrative image to run the COSMOSWorks application on their local computers. You must perform a client installation on each client computer before it can access and use the COSMOSWorks application on the server.

To create an administrative image:1 Insert the COSMOSWorks CD into your CD-ROM drive.

2 In your Windows desktop, click Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt.

3 In the Command Prompt window, enter:

msiexec /a <Msi_ path>

The variable Msi_path represents the path and filename of the .msi file for your operating system and language. The COSMOSWorks .msi file name is constructed as follows:

COSMOS_<language>.msi

A sample command line is:

msiexec /a F: \ cwwi\MainInstall\COSMOS_English.msi

The COSMOS 2006 Installation Wizard appears.

4 Follow on-screen instructions. In the License dialog box, make sure that you choose the network (floating) license where the hostid matches the hostid of the machine you are installing the administrative image on. Otherwise, the licensing fails. Note that you can skip the license configuration step if you just want to create the administrative image of COSMOSWorks and other COSMOS products on the remote machine.

Upgrading an Administrative ImageThe following procedure applies when you upgrade to major COSMOSWorks releases. For information on how to upgrade an administrative image for a COSMOSWorks service pack, refer to the Download and Installation section of each service pack page.

To upgrade an administrative image:1 Create an administrative image on a server for COSMOSWorks 2006 using

the previous procedure, “To create an administrative image”.

2 Install COSMOSWorks 2006 and other COSMOS products on each client computer using the procedure “To install on a local computer from an administrative image”.

Removing an Administrative Image

To remove an administrative image from the server:1 Make sure that no active COSMOSWorks sessions are in progress.

2 Make sure that COSMOSWorks and other COSMOS products are uninstalled from all the client machines on which it was installed.

3 Delete the administrative image from the server’s hard drive.

Section 3: To Install and Configure the COSMOS License Service

The COSMOS Network License Manager installation allows you to install only the license files as well as to configure the COSMOS License Service on a server machine. You cannot run COSMOS on the server machine using this installation. However, you can install COSMOS on any client computer across the network using the procedure, “To install on a local computer from CD“ or “to install on a local computer from an administrative image” described in the previous sections. During the client installation, you can specify to access the license from the server machine using the port-number@host-name option in the COSMOS License Information dialog box.

To install the COSMOS Network License Manager:1 Insert the COSMOSWorks CD into your CD-ROM drive.

2 From the CD menu, choose the second button “Install COSMOS Network License Manager”. The Installation starts up.

NOTE: When the COSMOSWorks 2006 Install Choice dialog box appears, select Upgrade an existing installation.

3 Follow the on-screen instructions to copy the license files as well as to configure the COSMOS License Service on the server machine.

You can use the COSMOS License Administrator located under Start->Programs-> COSMOS Network License Manager; to check or reconfigure your license based on the license file. If you do not have a license file, the COSMOS License Administrator lets you request it through the Internet.

Section 4: Silent Installations

Passing Properties to a Silent InstallationTo start a silent installation (without the display of a user interface or dialog boxes), use the /i and /qn options of the msiexec.exe command. Set the global properties for installation options different from defaults.

Examples

Suppose that your computer has the following options:

• Installation source pointing to the msi file package

<CD drive letter>:\cwwi\MainInstall\COSMOSWorks\i386_

COSMOSWorks_English.msi

• English language operating system

• At location C:\Program Files\<your_preferred_folder>

To perform an individual installation of COSMOSWorks from the COSMOSWorks CD on this computer, enter the following command:

The msi package name contains the language as well as the product name to be installed and is constructed as i386_<productname>_<language>.msi. For example if you were to install the French version of COSMOSWorks, then the path to the msi installation package would be as follows:

Analysis Advisor boosts the designer’s confidence and ability to do analysis. Novice users and evaluators can quickly get answers to common analysis questions.

Analysis LibraryCOSMOSWorks now allows users to create templates of commonly used analysis specifications such as loads, supports, and contact conditions.

Experienced analysis users within a company can now create templates for novices to help reduce common mistakes. This feature makes it easy to reuse design specifications from one design iteration to another.

Spot Weld ConnectorSpot welds are widely used to join sheet metal parts. COSMOSWorks can now easily simulate spot weld connections to analyze spot welded sheet metal assemblies.

Traditionally, simulating spot welds in analysis software is a manually intensive process. With COSMOSWorks, spot weld connectors are created in a single step.

Virtual WallCOSMOSWorks now allows users to define contact between a body and a virtual wall. Virtual wall can be used to simulate the behavior of walls, floors, and other flat surfaces that exist in real life. Users can define a stiffness for the virtual wall.

Ground BoltThe existing bolt connector has been enhanced to simulate grounded bolts.

Link ConnectorCOSMOSWorks now allows users to simulate the connection between components at two locations connected by a rigid link. The link allows components to maintain a constant distance between them while allowing relative rotation.

Users no longer need to model the link. It is now a one step process rather than the tedious and time consuming traditional procedure.

HingeCOSMOSWorks allows users to define a hinge restraint in a single step. Hinge restraints can be applied to cylindrical faces such as holes and shafts.

In addition, they can also search materials on matweb.com and access other useful resources such as COSMOS newsgroups, subscription support, downloads, license requests, etc.

Make Meshing Invisible

Mixed MeshingCOSMOSWorks now allows users to analyze assemblies of thick and thin components efficiently by using a combination of solid mesh for thick bodies and shells for thin bodies. It also allows users to treat extruded parts as beams.

Assemblies with ClearanceMost assemblies have a small clearance between the parts to account for manufacturing tolerance. Now users can bond these parts even if the assembly components do not touch each other. This eliminates the need to modify the assembly for analysis.

Multibody SupportCOSMOSWorks allows users to analyze multibody parts. Users can mix different mesh types (solid, shell, and beam) and define contact conditions between the multiple bodies in their parts. This eliminates the need to modify the model for analysis.

h-Adaptive Method for Static Studies

COSMOSWorks can now automatically converge to correct results using h-adaptive technology. In each iteration, the mesh in critical areas is automatically refined to improve results.

This minimizes the need for manual mesh refinements. Users save time by eliminating trial and error guesswork of manual mesh refinements.

Easier Definition of ContactGap/Contact options like node to node, node to surface, and surface to surface have been renamed and regrouped to enable users to easily define contact conditions.

Improve Usability - Mirror SolidWorks UI

“What’s Wrong” Indicators“What’s Wrong” indicators give a visual indication of the current status of analysis results. When there is a change in the geometry, material, loads or restraints, the “What’s Wrong” message box lists detailed diagnostics messages regarding the warnings and errors.

This provides immediate visual feedback on results status and eliminates the need for a detailed diagnostics or bookkeeping of the model and analysis data.

Create/Edit Material LibrariesCOSMOSWorks now allows users to add or edit linear, nonlinear, thermal, and fatigue material properties in a single step using the built-in material editor.

Analysis File ManagementCOSMOSWorks now provides more options for analysis results locations. Users can choose to keep the results in the SolidWorks model folder, a sub-folder under the SolidWorks model location, or a default results folder. In addition, users can define separate results file locations for each study.

This simplifies the packaging and archiving of models with their respective analysis results and makes it easier to manage analysis files.

Contact Analysis of ShellsUsers can now analyze assemblies of sheet metal or thin components using shell elements. Bonded, gap, or contact conditions can be defined between shell surfaces of an assembly. Using shell elements requires less resources.

Customize Default PlotsCOSMOSWorks now allows users to specify which plots will be created by default after an analysis has run. For example, users can specify that all mode shape plots be created following a frequency analysis run. This saves time by creating the plot automatically instead of manually creating them one at a time.

Improved Section PlotsCOSMOSWorks now allows users to create plots cut by multiple section planes. This provides better visualization and printing of section plots.

Enhanced eDrawings SupportCOSMOSWorks can now create a single compact eDrawings file with multiple results plots. In addition, users can hide selected parts of an assembly to better visualize the results.

Drop Test - Support Contact Between Parts

COSMOSWorks now allows users to perform drop tests on assemblies. Users can define different contact conditions between various components.

Users can now study the interaction between different components in an assembly along with their shifting and damage.

Drop Test - Flexible FloorUsers can now drop objects onto a flexible floor. The flexible floor option allows the user to define stiffness and thickness of the floor to simulate different flooring, such as carpet, hardwood, concrete, etc.

Using the flexible floor option, a user can simulate more realistic drop test conditions.

Drop Test - Measure Velocity and Acceleration

Users can now measure velocity or acceleration after impact in a drop test. Along with other units, acceleration can also be measured as ‘g’ force.

Fatigue - Multiple S-N CurvesDifferent S-N curves can now be defined for each component in an assembly. S-N curves are now integrated within the material database.

Users now have the ability to perform fatigue analysis on an assembly with components having different material properties. Saves time by using available library data.

Fatigue - Load History Data Support

Loading events used in fatigue analysis can now have variable amplitude. Load history curve data for an event can be imported from a text file.

Fatigue - Rainflow Charts and Mean Stress Correction

Fatigue analysis can now plot rainflow and damage matrix charts at any given location. The mean stress correction option using either Soderberg or Goodman theory is supported.

Rainflow charts can help users determine the effects of small stress cycles in their loading history and possible effects of infinite life.

Nonlinear - Hyperelastic and Viscoelastic Models

Users can define or import engineering curve data into the COSMOSWorks material database to automatically compute material constants for hyperelastic and viscoelastic materials.

It is now easier to perform nonlinear analysis involving these material definitions. Saves time by automatically computing the material constants instead of doing complex hand calculations.

Nonlinear - Nitinol Material ModelThe COSMOSWorks material database now has a pre-defined material model for Nitinol. Nitinol is a shape memory alloy used in internal medical devices such as stents.

Expanded Analysis Capabilities

Multiple Rotating Frames of Reference PE

COSMOSFloWorks can model more than one rotating region in the fluid. This allows multiple fans to each have a different velocity and direction of rotation.

Users can test a helicopter design with two rotor blades or a rotating engine design with more than one rotating compressor.

Rotating Flow with Non-Axisymmetric Stator PE

COSMOSFloWorks can simulate impeller assemblies with a non-axisymmetric stator. In the previous version the stator had to be axisymmetric.

Users can design real life impellers and centrifugal pumps which usually have a non-symmetric stator housing design.

Moving Walls with Both Rotation and Translation PE

In COSMOSFloWorks users can solve problems where the outer wall of a structure can both rotate and translate about the same axis. In earlier versions the wall could either rotate or translate.

Users can now simulate flow around the blades of a helicopter as it vertically takes off.

Analyze Liquid and Gas in Different Regions

Users can specify liquid and gas in the same model. The liquid and gas regions cannot come into contact with each other.

Any design using liquid and gas such as heat exchangers can now be analyzed.

Complete Steam Analysis PE

Environmental Pressure Boundary Condition

COSMOSFloWorks can model environmental pressure boundary conditions to openings where direction of the flow is not known. This boundary condition acts as total pressure at inlets and static pressure at outlets.

Heat Sink EmulationsIn COSMOSFloWorks users can emulate complex heat sink behavior in electronic cooling problems. The complex heat sink geometry is replaced by a simple box which takes into account the fan curve, hydraulic and thermal resistance characteristics of the complex heat sink.

This can efficiently solve electronic cooling problems with numerous heat sinks.

Thermal Contact ResistanceCOSMOSFloWorks can model thin wafers as contact resistance to include the correct thermal behavior of the material without actually creating the physical model of the wafer. Contact resistance can be applied by specifying the thickness and material of the contact layer.

Preview Slider for Iso and 3D Profile Plots

COSMOSFloWorks allows users to preview iso surfaces and 3D profiles using a slider. Real time viewing allows users to see results before creating the plots.

Animate Flow Trajectories using Arrows or Spheres

COSMOSFloWorks now allows users to animate the flow trajectories using arrows or spheres. Visualization of the flow profile inside the model is improved. Users can see how suspended particles move in a flow stream if they model the particles as spheres.

Automatic Result Export to ExcelCOSMOSFloWorks can automatically export point, surface, and volume parameter values evaluated by the program to Microsoft Excel. Results for numerous projects can be exported to Excel for quick viewing.

Redesigned Setup WizardThe setup wizard in COSMOSFloWorks is redesigned for easier work flow. The wizard now includes navigational buttons to jump between various steps.

Use SolidWorks MaterialsCOSMOSFloWorks can automatically use material properties applied to parts in SolidWorks. In addition any SolidWorks material can be imported to COSMOSFloWorks’ Engineering database.

Users no longer need to reapply materials to solids while doing analysis in COSMOSFloWorks.

Time for Completion of AnalysisThe COSMOSFloWorks solver gives a visual indication of the total time remaining for the completion of analysis at every instant during the solution process.

Remote Solver CapabilityUsers can run the flow analysis on a remote computer connected to the network. The remote computer can be a 64 bit processor.

Run the analysis on a faster computer that is shared by many users. The user’s primary computer can be free for other design tasks while the solver is run on a remote computer.

More Options to Control the MeshUsers can specify the number of cells between control planes to define mesh control. Users can also specify the minimum wall thickness and gap size for local regions.

This makes it easy to obtain an optimized mesh for complicated models.

Color Chart EnhancementCOSMOSFloWorks 2006 allows users to change the color chart options from the screen. For example, the max/min range can be directly modified on the screen.
