BREAKTHROUGH

January 14, 2012

Initiated in 2003, the UBC Student Leadership Conference (SLC) has grown to be the largest student led leadership event in Canada.

Organized for students by students, the SLC is a student-driven initiative that provides delegates with a focused, one-day opportunity to develop their skills, establish a solid network of peers and mentors, and discover their leadership potential.

Though a one-day event, the messages taken away from this conference have moved delegates to make an impact in their communities and beyond. Last year, the conference on January 8, 2011 drew a record 1300 students to the Chan Centre.

In past years we have had the honour of hosting the Buried Life, Romeo Dallaire, Roberta Bondar, and Stephen Lewis. We hope to build on the successes of the past and reach new heights in inspiring students.

BREAKTHROUGHThe Student Leadership Conference is where UBC’s leadership community gathers to create personal breakthroughs. This year’s theme - Breakthrough- challenges participants to pursue a goal that they are passionate about, one that nothing will stop them from achieving. The SLC hopes to help delegates identify their barriers to success, then empower them to break through these obstacles, to go beyond and achieve their goals.

Leadership is about realizing this potential in everybody, and the SLC provides the resources, networks and inspiration to do so. The SLC has been a catalyst for countless breakthroughs at UBC over the past ten years, and promises to be the spark for many more in 2012.

What’s stopping you? That’s right: nothing.

“The SLC really helped open my eyes about all the ways I can apply my skills and take on leadership roles right now, in my own community.

- Derek Moore Arts, 2nd Year

The Learning Centre is delighted to be sponsoring the Student Leadership Conference again this year. This student-led event is, in our opinion, one of the most important events on campus each year and we welcome the opportunity to host and support such an inspiring group of colleagues.

“I loved the variety of programming they had at the SLC; there’s everything from tailored workshops to Featured Presenters, all building up to an inspiring keynote at the end.

““

If you’re involved at UBC, you’ve definitely heard of the SLC - it’s the flagship UBC conference of the year. Everybody who plays a role in campus life goes to the SLC to interact with other groups and to grow as leaders in the community. It’s the place to meet the leaders of tomorrow.

As President of the Alma Mater Society, UBC’s student society, I am naturally a champion of student leadership, and one of the SLC’s biggest advocates. The SLC is UBC’s largest student-run event, and one of, if not the, biggest in Canada. And in this case, bigger really is better.

- Jeremy McElroyPresident, AMS Student Society of UBC Vancouver

The SLC attracts a diverse group of UBC’s best and brightest students looking to develop existing leadership skills or establish new ones. In addition, 100 exceptional high school students and 75 recent UBC alumni will also be invited to participate.

These inspiring individuals are motivated role models: both outstanding academics and community leaders. They are the hubs of communication in the UBC community who will inspire gen-erations to come as tomorrow’s politicians, scientists and CEOs.

Our delegates are leaders in many organizations, including those highlighted on this page.

The SLC hopes to engage organizations and members of the community, knowing that the value of investing resources in developing the next generation of leaders is innumerable. These ideas are fostered through par-ticipation in project-based work-shops where delegates will have opportunities to meet, share, and discuss how to take substantive action on issues relevant to them.
