From the Chairman I hope you all found last months meeting interesting and thank you to all those who brought items for James to talk about and value. Next months’ (June) meeting is the AGM and as usual there will be no speaker but free refreshments will be served afterwards. Please note that the meeting format is also changed and we will start off in the Church, full details inside and also on the noticeboards at this meeting. Membership renewals can be made at the June meeting, before and after the AGM. Renewals will also be taken at the July meeting. Please make sure you bring your renewal form with you as this is essential to ensure a speedy and accurate process. We have, as I have previously mentioned, had to make some changes to our membership fees and details are in this Newsletter. Please also see the important information about the AGM and Committee vacancies on the noticeboards in the Assembly Room and in this Newsletter.

Committee for 2014/2015

The Committee of Kettering U3A is governed by our constitution. This states that the

Committee shall have 4 Honorary Officers. These are Chairman, Vice-Chairman,

Secretary and Treasurer all can serve a term of up to 3 years each. There are

committee members who each serve a yearly term but may stand for re-election if they

so wish.

In June 2014 the situation is:-

Maggi McGuire (Treasurer/Membership Secretary) will remain in post for a further year.

Cyril Young (Chairman) will have completed 4 years in post and is required to stand down

Mary Wildman (Vice-Chairman) will succeed to the post of Chairman as per the Constitution

Marian Tucker (Secretary) has completed 1 year and will remain in post

Maureen Curd (Groups Co-ordinator) is willing to stand for re-election and remain in post

David Clayton (Speaker Secretary) is standing down from Committee

Elizabeth Toseland (Co-opted Committee Member) is willing to stand for re-election

Richard Boyles (Newsletter Editor) is willing to stand for re-election and remain in post

As a result there are vacancies for the post of Vice-Chairman and a Committee

Member. It is also felt that it would be beneficial to increase the Committee by an

additional member, this means that nominations are sought for one further Committee

Member. Any member of our U3A can apply. If you have an interest or would like to

know more please contact any current Committee member.

Trips & Visits Thursday 14th August 15 seats held London £16.95 URGENT INFORMATION REGARDING TRIP TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE 31 August. RB Travel have just been informed that the boat trip tea is no longer being operated on a Sunday so the excursion has been altered to Saturday 30 August. I have informed participants by telephone. This just a reminder.

Saturday 30 August 15 seats held Buckingham Palace (Includes afternoon tea cruise ) £61.45 Tuesday 09 Sept. 9 seats only held Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) £36.25 These trips are inclusive of return coach fare and entry fees where needed. Also they have various pick up points. Thursday 05 June 2014. Trip to Hampton Court Palace and gardens. Entrance fee £12.60. Return Coach fare with 30 passengers will be £16.40 so total cost would be £30. Please register and pay at this meeting.

Visits 2014 First and foremost I will not be at the May meeting. As you are all aware I have made some visit arrangements through RB TRAVEL. However, these need early payment so having set up a trip to Hampton Court Palace for 05 June I only received 5 names for this trip so have postponed it until September. I would like to receive names for September so that I may make necessary arrangements. I tried to implement the interest sheet, that some of you completed in January, by using RB Travel but even these seats were not taken. I understand that distance and budgets are of prime concern but please be aware that as we only enjoy one meeting per month commitment is vital. I will be attending a regional meeting on 09 May and hope to combine some visits with other U3As which could alleviate the seat number problems currently experi-enced. Card Making 1 — As always we eventually stopped

chatting in time to produce some outstanding cards. The standard of the cards never ceases to amaze me, and the variety of cards is astonishing. Everyone seemed to find just what they were looking for among the array of materials available so every one went home happy. These mornings are such a delight and the creative talent is immense. Bookworms — At our last meeting, we discussed J L Carr's "A Month in the Country" which was thoroughly enjoyed by all of our readers. The story concerned the recovery from its coats of lime wash of a medieval wall painting in the church, set in the fictional Yorkshire village of Oxgodby. Our next book is "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" which should provide some lively discussion. We have planned our reading for the next 6 months. Contact: Pauline Parkin 01536 799197

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

Northamptonshire Network of U3As Visit to Cottesbrooke Hall (Near Northampton)

Thursday 24th July 2014 This is a members’ only visit and includes a guided tour of the Hall as well as admission to the gardens. The cost is £12 per member (inc tea/coffee and cake), free car parking is also available. You must arrive between 1.00pm and 1.30pm and will be issued with tickets and allocated a tour slot. NEW GROUP—BEGINNERS PENCIL SKETCHING A new member, Diane Bulley, (who is deaf) is offering a cumulative Beginners Pencil Sketching course that is suitable for all abilities. It will be available as a House Group to 4 members only and will be held from Monday to Thursday during the first week of each month, followed by a “Show and Chat” meeting for all on the fourth Monday in the month in the restaurant at “Seasons” Garden Centre, Cranford Road, Burton Latimer. Card Making 2 — Look what we made! Fun was had with us all filling in our ICE numbers and emergency contact numbers for this new group before the creativity began. The whole group cut and created 3D flowers from a flat sheet. Everyone different and equally beautiful. Discussions were had about the following months’ creations and sharing ideas. The next meeting is " Card creating and lunch at Ann's" on Monday 26 May. Please let me know if you are not coming as transport will be needed. Friday Pop-in - We meet at the Toller Church rooms 10 – 11.30 on the first Friday of every month. New members please come and join us for coffee, exchange of books, magazines and local news. We need your support. Contact: Sue Hince 01536 521023

Discussion Group — A very lively afternoon in April discussing the problem of food waste. Janet produced a huge amount of data relating to the problem and several members had also researched the topic which led to several different aspects. We were amazed to find that the problem of food waste was raised in the 1920's but as there was a depression around that time we felt it must only have been among the very rich. Several solutions were discussed relating to sell by and use by dates and also "buy one, get one free." Distribution of near sell by dates to homeless and needy was a suggestion but the dreaded Health and Safety was felt to be a stumbling block. Our conclusion was that there should be a big campaign of education to aid usage of perishables and that the older one gets the more careful and frugal we become. A big thank you to Janet for all her work. The next meeting is on May 13th and will be led by Pat Clarke. The topic is" Should people who Self-Abuse have to pay for NHS treatment". Computer Group — 27th May and 10th June will be the last two sessions of the beginners course. We cover all versions of Windows and Apple Mac. All subjects will be covered as we progress in a slow, step by step way. Each lesson is fully supported by a detailed hand-out sheet to take home and some online video tutorials. Country Matters — Our walk in Short Wood, Southwick in April was somewhat muddy, but it was a lovely sunny day. We spotted primroses, bluebells (the perfume of these was absolutely glorious), violets and stitchwort, fungi and a lot of tree blossom. Many birds were singing their hearts out. A tasty meal followed in the Shuckburgh Arms. We will have had our May meeting from Sudborough before the magazine is printed, but we will start again from The Vane Arms in Sudborough at 10.30am on Thursday 12 June. Gardening Group — Sunday 1st June Finedon Gardens Group opening. Six miles SE of Kettering. All four gardens individually signed from the A6 or the A510. All gardens very different with vegetables, flowers, water features, greenhouses, hanging baskets, summer house and soft fruit, etc. At varying stages of maturity. Combined admission charge of £3.50, children free. Open from 2 to 6 pm. Cream teas are available. Lunch Club — The April lunch was at Samuel Pepys and we all enjoyed superb food and service. Although a little more pricey than usual it was worth the extra pound or two as an Easter treat. We do try to keep costs down for our lunch, but just now and again for variety the cost goes up just a little. During lunch a questionnaire was given out to find out our preferences regarding types of food enjoyed other than English and suggestions for venues. The response was that most of us were willing to try foods other than traditional and someone funnily suggested as venues go, then anyone willing to put up with us lot. The questionnaire will be put out again for those who did not attend April lunch. The May lunch will be organised by Molly Lucy and Marjorie Bosworth and is at The Hare at Loddington. Our thanks go to Molly and Marjorie in advance as I will be away for a few days and will not be able to attend. The Lunch Club meet for lunch on the fourth Tuesday of the month at a variety of venues. The menu is viewed at the monthly U3A meeting the week prior and payment is made after lunch. Knit and Natter - This photo is a picture of an Easter Bunny crocheted by Michelle, just one of the items knitted and crocheted by the talented people in the Knit and Natter group. We had a very lively and fun meeting on Bank Holiday Monday. Mary came dancing in full of beans after only having a back op on the Saturday. It was good to see her looking so well. Safe Driving — One in ten crashes caused by distractions

The IAM is warning drivers about the dangers of distracted driving after research found that nearly one in ten (9%) of drivers admit to crashing their cars because they were distracted. Just under one in twenty drivers (4 per cent) say that someone was injured in the crash.

The IAM/Vision Critical survey, which polled nearly 1500 regular UK drivers aged 18 years and over, also found that of the 500 divers who admitted to having a near miss, almost one in five (18 per cent) then went on have a crash.

The most common distractions are:

• Children in the car (29%)

• Changing the radio channel (27%)

• Back seat drivers (26%)

• Mobile phone use (24%)

• Sat nav (15%)

• Attractive pedestrians, drivers or passengers (14%)

Our most crash-prone drivers come from London and the South East, where 14 per cent of drivers admitted to distraction crashes. The lowest crash rates are in Wales (3%), Yorkshire and Humber (4%) and South West England (5%),

Men are nearly twice as likely to crash because of a distraction than women (11% and 6%).

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “If you think you can multitask and drive then think again. Using mobile phones and other distractions were a factor in more than one hundred deaths on our roads last year, every one of them avoidable.”

Thank You - I would like to thank the Knit & Natter group for sponsoring me £25 for taking part in the Crazy Hats walk in March. The charity is for breast cancer & also gives help to hospitals in Northamptonshire. The walk was 5 times around Wicksteed Park. The atmosphere and the sight of some of the crazy hats that people wore really helped to keep us going. The weather was fine this year, a sunny Spring day, and as my family also joined in, 10 of us, aged 4 to 74 it was a lovely day and lots of fun. I felt a bit of a fraud asking for money from sponsors, as I had enjoyed it so much, but it was all in a good cause and I raised almost £100. Perhaps next year we could have a U3A group on the walk??

Looking at Churches — In April we visited the Hindu Mandir in Wellingborough on a Wednesday evening where we were made extremely welcome. On our arrival there was a service taking place and we were invited to join in, although fortunately we didn’t have to prostrate ourselves, as their men were doing. The women and men were seated apart and the women merely bowed and clapped in their worship, plus lots of music and chanting. The Mandir is absolutely beautiful with much gold artwork, and with effigies of the Hindu gods. There is a holy shrine which is the only one of its kind outside of India, and many Hindus travel to visit it. Hiten, our guide explained a lot about the culture and various films were shown to us. There were many questions asked as we enjoyed tea and biscuits afterwards. Everything is run by volunteers and even the paintings and artwork had been done by volunteers. There is no church visit in May, so the next one will be at East Carlton church on Wednesday, June 18th at 2.0pm. Hopefully it will be a fine day, and we will have the opportunity to go into East Carlton park afterwards.

Musical Circles 2 — The sharp contrast between the calming music of The Suite from Aleko, Rachmaninov. Im Abendrot from The Four Songs, Richard Strauss. Followed by Adagio for Strings by Barber with the more stirring Danse Macabre.Saen-Saens. Bolero Ravel and Polotsian Dances from Prince Igor Borodin, all gave an interesting appreciation of sound. Playreading—Despite low numbers for various reasons "Beyond a Joke" by Derek Benfield proved to be a hilarious play which kept the group members busy taking several parts. Scrabble—Meetings are held at the Parish church rooms. Time 2.00pm—4.30pm on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of each month. New members are wel-come. We enjoy playing in a relaxed atmosphere. Contact: Pauline Reed 01536 513850

Spanish Conversation — The Spanish conversation group (I have changed the name from ‘Basic Spanish’ because this group is no longer suitable for absolute beginners) continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We have now managed to acquire a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students We are now at full capacity. However, we would be happy to start a waiting list but because of the level our members are at, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish. Playford English Country Dancing - We have been pleased to welcome some new members for this Summer session. Our first meeting is on Weds. 14th May at St. Andrew's Church Hall 2.30p.m. - 4p.m. It will be every 2nd & 4th Weds. until Weds. 9th July when we have a break. We should start again in September. Photography Group — We ignored the weather forecasts and met up in Oundle at the start of April. Once again the forecast was wrong and we managed to have a couple of hours in dry but cloudy conditions to look round and photograph around the town. Naturally it was the architecture which held most interest, especially the school buildings such as The Cloisters and the School Chapel, although the creative minds of the group found many other subjects to photograph. As usual at these meetings certain technical issues arose, and hopefully the group finished the afternoon with a bit more knowledge of their cameras than they did at the start. The main issue on this day was the idea of “exposure locking”, which is getting the camera to determine an exposure and keeping it before composing and taking the final image. This is useful if taking a dark subject against a bright background, or vice versa, a light subject against a dark background. On similar lines we revisited the idea of Exposure Compensation (EV), and again we were pleased to find that all the cameras had this feature, although in some cases it took a bit of hunting through the menus! Some of us retired to a café afterwards, to talk about photography and set the world to rights. A pleasant end to an interesting day. Because of holidays, Baltic cruises and so on we decided not to meet in May, and so our next meeting will be on Monday 2

nd June, when we are touring

Wining and Dining - We enjoyed a very good meal at The Old Bank Turkish restaurant in Rothwell. The food and service were both very good. We shall have been to Chimichangas on the market place in Kettering by the next meeting. The menu looks promising. There will be no wining and dining in June. Walking Group - For our May walk we completed a 5.5 mile route round the Hambleton Peninsula at Rutland Water. Ten members started out, to be joined by another two half way round. The weather was kind to us and most of the promised showers stayed away; but the strong winds of the south bank were in contrast to the relative balmy north bank. We met up at The Horse and Jockey in Manton for an excellent lunch afterwards. The next walk will be on the 4

th June, leaving from The

Writers Group — Are you someone with an idea for a story, a poem, an article, an essay or even a play that you've been dying to get down on paper, but have never got round to it? Or have you something that you've already written and would like to share! Why not come along to our friendly group? All you need is a love of words and a sense of humour. You'll find lots of positive encouragement and advice as well as a cuppa. (There is a small levy towards the hire of the room.) We meet on the first Tuesday of each month from 1.45 to 3.45 pm in the Parish Rooms in Kettering: next meeting June 3rd. For those who like a suggestion to work to - or ignore - the topic is a play or book review. My apologies for my absence this month and my grateful thanks to Elizabeth Toseland for standing in for me. Also, and not least, thanks to all those who have been so kind and supportive during my recent incapacitation. I hope to be back, firing on all former cylinders, with all convenient speed! Watercolour Painting— The Water Colour Painting Group has no classes in May, June, July and August. The new Autumn Term will begin on Thursday, 11th September, 2014 in the Parish Church Rooms (next to St. Peter & Paul Church), Kettering, and will be from 2pm to 4pm. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. Michael McGuire has agreed to come and teach us when we resume our classes on 11th September. Theatre Group — Can a Shakespearian drama be told through a theatrical performance with fluid graceful movements which also demonstrated the essence of the story; rivalry and jealousy? The answer is a resounding YES! Many U3A members witnessed the Royal Ballet perform "The Winter’s Tale", a prologue with three acts, at a recent live film show at the Odeon cinema in Kettering. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say the performance was superb and left members wanting more of the same again.
