From the Chairman— “Merry Christmas, Everyone”

goes the song; “I wish it could be Christmas every day.” Personally, I don’t or it would not be a special time, and I would be reminded every day, instead of just once, that I am a year older. And think of the expense! Of course, I know that the lyricist is implying that Christmas brings a mood of kindness, charitableness, generosity, as well as forgiveness and gratitude. Peace on Earth is a rather taller order, especially when received wisdom (???) suggests the way to deal with evil is to bomb it out of existence. Merely an observation, mes amis. Here in our U3A the good feelings listed above are very much in abundance. Thank you all, and may 2016 bring Good Tidings, Good Health and Good Cheer!

Bookworms —

At the last meeting of the group, Penelope Lively's "Moon Tiger" was discussed. Unfortunately I was not at the meeting, I do not know what was the general opinion of the book, but I am sure a lively discussion took place. We will not be meeting in December, so until our next book "The Invention of Wings" has been read, and the group meet in January, no further report can be given.

Busy Needles and Banter — It may be Christmas

but sadly homelessness, disease, want and wars in which it is the innocent who suffer still infest this world. The Ladies’ needles, however, do not rest even when on holidays or on the other side of the world. As I write parcels are winging their way to our particular charities in the hope and belief that our enjoyment translates into something that, however small, makes a difference. Grateful thanks are due especially to Di and Marian for holding the fort in my absence.

Card Making 2 —

Contact: Marian Tucker 01536 510 354 [email protected]

Card Making 1 — This month, having got a bit carded

out, we met at Glebe Farm Tea Rooms for a coffee morning to celebrate the season. We all had a very nice time, with lots of conversations and coffee to oil our tongues. We also paid a visit to the craft shop on the same site and saw some lovely Christmas Card designs. Well worth a visit, any crafters out there. As my annual trip to Lanzarote is still in limbo due to my troublesome ear there may or may not be Cardmaking in January but I will keep all my members up to date. I would like to wish both groups a very Happy Christmas and a very productive New Year!

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who

meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

Canals & Waterways — We held our annual planning meeting at Stanwick Lakes. A short walk, a very good lunch and then our meeting. Many thanks to Rachel and Cathie for organising it. Lots of good ideas with some old favourites and a few new destinations in the pipeline. I hope to have a proposed programme ready in the new year after a little research. We have had a very busy year which included: three midweek breaks to London,Liverpool and Bristol and plenty of other day trips. We are going to Stanwick lakes again on Thursday 21st January at 11.0am for a longer walk, weather permitting, followed by either a coffee or lunch. Please let me know if you will be joining us.

Country Matters — We met in Foxton on a beautiful

sunny morning in November for a circular stroll from the Black Horse pub to the locks. Along the way we noticed many types of fungi and the trees were a mass of glorious autumnal colours against the blue sky. Great views in all directions from the top of the locks and also from the viewing platform. We learnt about the inclined plane which used to take the boats to the bottom of the flight which eased congestion on the locks during the early 20

th century. Most of us stayed for an enjoyable

meal in the pub! We will already have been to East Carlton Park for our December trip by the time the magazine is in print – no meeting in January so next visit is scheduled for Thursday, 11 February 2016, 10.15 for 10.30 start meeting at the Spread Eagle pub in Cottingham. Thank you for your support during the year and Happy Christmas to all of you..

Looking at Churches — November was the month

when we visited our 50th church. This has taken almost five years, and some of the group have been with us all the way, rain or shine. Thank you all for your support, and particular thanks to Alan Robinson for sending lots of lovely photos to Richard for the newsletter. This time we went to St. Etheldreda’s church in Guilsborough. We did not know what we were in for, and it turned out to be a real dramatic performance. Our guides were four members of the Guilsborough Drama group, including the producer. They re- enacted much of the history of the church and village, making the stories really come alive for us, as their acting was superb. At one point Nigel, one of the actors, showed us the carved heads on the roof which depicted the ‘Seven ages of Man’ and proceeded to recite Shakespeare’s soliloquy from ‘As you like it’ while his wife pointed to each one in turn, as he spoke about them. All the world’s a stage.... There was a beautiful stained glass window depicting St. Etheldreda, from where the name of the church came, and her husband St. Wilfred. Apparently although they married, Etheldreda resolved to remain a virgin and her husband allowed this to go on for twelve years, after which she entered a nunnery and he married someone else. There were stories of witches in Guilsborough putting curses on the villagers, and their gruesome trials to decide if they were guilty or innocent, usually guilty. There were colourful windows designed by William Morris, very decorative as one would expect. In 2009 the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies presented St. Etheldreda’s with two bound copies of its research into the church building and the fabric. These books are kept on show for all to look at. The bells date from 1593, and one commemorates the Great Plague. Nigel again, read us a poetical inscription from one of them, referring to the plague. The church was cosy and warm, with a small kitchen, where two friendly ladies offered us tea and cakes. Many of the group declared that with the theatrical performance, this had been our best church visit yet, so it was a good way to celebrate our fiftieth. We do not always find a church which is free for a tour in December, as they have so much going on, but All Saints at Naseby is available on Wednesday, December 16th at 2.0pm. This church has much history to do with the Civil War and the Battle of Naseby, which was the final battle. To start the New Year off it will be Grafton Regis, so those of you who have read or watched Phillipa Gregory’s version of The White Queen will know all about it. This is on January 20th 2016. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and Good Health in the New Year.

Photography Group — Irchester Country Park was

the November destination for the Photography Group. The weather was cool and the skies dull and grey, so it was a challenge to find suitable subjects for our cameras. The carved wooden statues proved of interest, and close-up details such as leaves and berries attracted some. There was a disappointing lack of fungi, despite the wet conditions, but the remaining autumn colours on the trees provided some interest in the general views. Our next meeting will be on Monday 14th December at 2.00pm. If the weather is frosty or snowy we shall go to Wicksteed Park, but if the weather is awful then Marilyn has offered to host the meeting at her house, enabling some photo "show and tell" opportunities and, no doubt, a little Photoshop tuition.

Spanish, Intermediate —

The Spanish Group which really has to be called ‘Intermediate Spanish’ now because the students have all progressed so much since we started, continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at the ASDA training room. The book we use is Pasos 2 and we are now over half way through it. Our lessons consist of some grammar, some conversation and some exercises from childrens’ exercise books that I have managed to acquire in Spain – they find these the hardest!!!

With 12 students, we would have to say that we are full but we would always try to fit in one more person provided they already have a knowledge of the language that would enable them to keep up. Teaching is by my colleague Bill Simon and myself with occasional sessions with a guest Spanish lady for pure conversation.

Photography Group — The Photography Group's

meeting for December will only have taken place a day or two before this newsletter was published, so there is no report on it yet. We might have had an indoor meeting to look at some of each other's photographs and learn a bit more about Photoshop, or we might have had some lovely weather and lighting conditions and so gone to Wicksteed Park to look for suitable subjects for our cameras. However, a landscape photographer's idea of "lovely weather" might not be everyone's cup of tea. In winter a landscape photographer longs for snow, frost and mist to provide that extra magic and give atmosphere to familiar scenes. Most normal folk would prefer to stay indoors at such a time, but not we intrepid snappers. Snow has the effect of simplifying the scene, and so bold shapes such as trees, walls, fences, human figures and

church spires really stand out against the magical background of white. The problem used to be that all that white fooled the

meters in the camera, so the snow came out looking grey due to underexposure. They used to say "increase by a stop" in snow. But many cameras these days have much more sophisticated metering systems, and cope much better. However, to be sure it pays to check your histogram after an initial test shot to make sure your camera is exposing correctly for the scene. If we get frost then we hope for blue skies and sunshine to make it sparkle, and if you have a polarising filter it can really make the blue sky sing out behind the frosted subject. Icicles make lovely images, especially if they are starting to thaw and you can capture the droplets of water as they drip down. Keep your batteries warm (such as under your coat) if you are out in the cold for a long time, because batteries hate the cold perhaps more than you do! Happy snapping....

Safe Driving — Have you mist any of our winter

hints? What a mist-ake. Given the onset of cold weather more and more of us are experiencing misty car windows. The IAM’s chief examiner, Peter Rodger recommends drivers better prepare their cars before they travel. Your windows will steam up when the air inside your car is warmer and is carrying more humidity. This air inside is cooled near the glass allowing the humidity to condense and form mist. Here are Peter’s top tips for coping better with misty windows. Mist will often form quicker on dirty windows so it’s important you keep your windows clean throughout the winter. Both the outside and inside of your windows should be kept equally clean – free from dust, tar, tree sap and grime. Newspaper can be used to polish glass once you’ve cleaned it. Wash the windows with some washing up liquid and water, then dry with a cloth ensuring you lift the windscreen wipers and clean the section of your windscreen beneath them. If you prefer the traditional method of using crumpled up newspaper, this works well too. Don’t leave any damp clothing in your car overnight as this can also cause the windows to steam up. Use the air conditioner to help lift any condensation from the inside of your car windows. You can adjust it accordingly to lower the setting once the moisture clears. And if your car has a button that sets the demister at the optimum for clearing the screen then use that. Rodger said: “Your windows are your eyes when you get behind the wheel. It is foolhardy and downright dangerous to drive one inch if you can’t see clearly from your windows. Be five minutes late rather than venture down the road in this way”. If you’d like help with any driving related issues or to find out more about the Safe Driving Group, please contact either Roy or Steve.

Walking Group - Our last walk took place on

Wednesday, 2nd December on a beautiful sunny and luckily a very mild day. Thick winter coats were not necessary but gaiters proved to be a useful asset. Why is it mine always seem to be at home when I need them?? We met in Thrapston, walked up through Islip, across the fields towards Aldwincle via Elinor trout fishery and back along the River Nene through Thrapston Lakes. For a short spell through the lakes the walk was very muddy, not surprising for a winter walk, but everyone managed to stay on their feet. We returned to Thrapston for a welcome buffet lunch at The Bridge Hotel. For many of the group this was their first visit to the hotel. We look forward to the return of some of our regular members in the New Year particularly Ann and Pete. Welcome to the new members who have joined us over the past few months. Happy Christmas everyone, stay fit and to help you walk off any excesses : -

The next U3A walk will be round Pitsford Reservoir on Wednesday, 6th January 2016. Meet at Brixworth Country Park, at 10a.m for a 10.15 a.m start. For more details contact: Christine Strachan on 01536 515 730

Ginnie Drummond painted in water colour her grandson playing games and it is called "Game On".

Ginnie's other picture is of a robin painted in water colour which she has called "Robin", and reminds us of Christmas. Contact: Jo Beaver on 01933 224 474 or Barbara Goodall on 01536 523 259

Editor’s Post Script This month you will have noticed we have lost four pages again as some groups did not send in any reports or news. Everyone must be out Christmas shopping (I didn’t think my list was that large).

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2016 Richard Boyles
