SAVE Annual Roster Issue – Do Not Toss SAVE THE POWER OF SERVICE By Jim Terry, Human & Spiritual Chair
At our recent District Convention Memorial Service we honor Kiwanians who had
passed on during the pass year. Those who knew these Kiwanis got up and spoke about there
contribution to their club and community. One thing rang clear was the commitment to
service. The first two objects of Kiwanis helps to guide us in our service. They state, To give
primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. Second, To
encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. Mother Teresa was a good example of service. I once read about a film about Mother Teresa
treating the poor in Calcutta, forcing them to eat some sort of food, holding their heads in
her lap as they died, making their last moments on earth full of love. I know it would be very
hard to do the things she did. She was dedicating her life and every scrap of energy she had
in service, yet even she was only able to touch a handful of the people that suffer from
poverty, hunger, and disease in this life. How could anyone make a difference, a real and
lasting difference?
It brought to my mind the story about a boy and a man on the beach. One day a man was
walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it
into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, ―What are you doing?‖ The youth replied,
―Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t
throw them back, they’ll die.‖ ―Son,‖ the man said, ―don’t you realize there are miles and
miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!‖
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back
into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said…‖I made a difference for that one.‖

STICK TO OUR PURPOSE By Brent F. Ashworth, 2009-2010 Utah-Idaho District Governor
Having recently attended the Kiwanis International Convention in Nashville,
Tennessee and our annual Utah-Idaho District Convention, at Burley, Idaho, I am
impressed with Kiwanis' commitment to "Serving the Children of the World".
Whether it is the assistance given to help eradicate deadly Malaria, which still takes
nearly a million and a half lives, many of them children, on the international stage or
to present a child with his or her first book and then read it to them at the district level,
among many other acts of service and kindness, in which our members are continually
engaged.
At our Burley District Convention, Governor Pattie Hansen asked me to present a
luncheon talk honoring Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President whose 200th birthday we
celebrate this year. During the dark days of the American Civil War, when things
were not going well for the Union army, the President learned of a young West Point
Cadet named Quintin Campbell, a distant relative of his wife Mary, who wanted to
quit and come home. We have probably all felt similarly at certain trying times in our
lives. Despite being under constant and unrelenting pressures from conducting the
war, the President took time to write the young man the following letter:
Washington D.C.
June 28, 1862
Cadet Quintin Campbell
My dear sir,
Your good mother tells me you are feeling very badly in your new situation. Allow
me to assure you that it is a perfect certainty you will, very soon, feel better-quite
happy, if you only stick to the resolution you have taken to procure a military
education. I am older than you, have felt badly myself, and KNOW what I tell you is
true. Adhere to your purpose, and you will soon feel as well as you ever did. On the
contrary, if you falter and give up, you will lose the power of keeping any resolution
and will regreat all your life. Take the advice of a friend, who, though he never saw
you, deeply sympathizes with you, and stick to your purpose.
Sincerely your friend,
A. Lincoln
Can you imagine what it must have been like to receive such a letter as a young
West Point Cadet from the Commander-in-Chief during the midst of the nation's
greatest calamity? Young Quintin re-thought his position and graduated four years
later, in 1866!
As we begin a new Kiwanis year, it is my hope that we will each take the time to
examine our role in "Serving the Children of the World" and stick to our purpose.
Abraham Lincoln's advice to young Cadet Campbell is still good advice for us today
as we continue to provide needed service of many kinds to our youth and communities
as members of Utah-Idaho District of Kiwanis International. Please call on me or our
board at any time, if we might be of assistance in our great purpose.
In Kiwanis Friendship, Brent
SUGGESTIONS AND GUIDANCE
FOR ALL OUTGOING OFFICERS By Pattie Hansen, Immediate Past Governor
Time flies when you are having fun! I had a great year as the Governor of the Utah
Idaho District. Working with Kiwanians from Utah and Idaho is one of the greatest
opportunities I have had in my Kiwanis service. There is not a finer group of folks on
the earth and I thank you sincerely for the opportunity to work with each of you in the
great work of serving our children.
I was reminded rather painfully during the August Convention that this is a time of
transition and letting go. I am not great at that process, but will try. I appreciate the
opportunity to work with men and women who have "been there" and are willing to let
me know the correct behaviors. Thank you to past Governors, mentors, fellow board
members, Lt Governors, Administrators, Club Presidents and others who serve in
Kiwanis for your support, guidance and leadership example.
As I prepare to take a seat on the board as Past-Governor I will share with you
council the latest Kiwanis Insider from Rob Parker at Kiwanis International sent to me
as out-going governor.
PAGE 3
SUGGESTIONS AND GUIDANCE (Continued)
1. Share with your successor that you will do whatever you can to ensure his or her
success as a leader.
2. Communicate to as many leaders as possible your support of the new leader or
leadership team.
3. Make a commitment to not interfere with the work of the new leader and to never
engage in criticism or negative comments.
4. Prepare yourself to re-direct people who continue to come to you with
problems/issues.
5. Volunteer to take on a new leadership role that will keep you focused on the
positive and unavailable for things that are counter-productive.
These are all great suggestions and guidance that all out-going officers can use in
this transition phase as we look forward toward another great year in Kiwanis in the
Utah Idaho District. I will try my best to work diligently on each of these suggestions
and pledge my support to Governor Brent and the 2009-2010 Board of Directors as
well as to my local Division and Club in Twin Falls.
Thank you all for your support, encouragement and most of all for your dedication
to Kiwanis Organization and to the children.
Yours in Kiwanis Service, Pattie Hansen
MISTER, CAN YOU SPARE SOME CHANGE? By Bob Dempsay, 2009-2010 Governor-Elect
I was sitting in the foyer at the just completed convention listening to a teacher tell
about cell phones in school. He was beguiling us with tales from the classroom. He
mentioned one young male student who was so good at texting that he could do it
without looking at the phone. The school where this occurred had a policy that if you
were caught texting or using your cell phone during school, you lost your phone and
had to buy it back.
This student was wearing a hoodie and he had one of his hands in his hoodie
pocket. Imagine the sight of a boy with his hand in his hoodie pocket and the hand is
moving. You have to remember where the pockets on hoodies hang. As the teacher
came up he stated, "I hope your texting or else you're going to be the laughing stock
of the school."
The point of the above is not a moral issue but changes that technology has
brought to all of us. When the average Kiwanian talks about conversing during
school, we think of passing notes, written on little sheets of paper. Today the youth
communicate with texting, MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.
How many of us have ever been on My Space or Face Book? How many of us can
text, much less read a text message? How many of us know how to twitter?
The world is changing at an incredible pace and if we as Kiwanians and Kiwanis
as an organization are going to remain relevant in the lives of the younger generations,
we will need to get involved in and understand their culture.
When the goal of one million members was implemented, many of us felt it was
not attainable, at least as we saw Kiwanis. Since then many inventive and creative
thoughts have been presented that will make this goal not only attainable but will
better the service that Kiwanis provides to our communities.
Satellite clubs, Internet clubs, Corporate clubs. All of these have the potential to
get more people involved in Kiwanis that would not have possible three years ago. A
satellite club in a smaller community will allow their citizens to provide Kiwanis
service without the large membership requirement.
As a district we need to be willing to accept the changes that are coming because
we will not survive as relevant organization if we don't.
I pledge to you that by the time I am Governor, I will have a Face Book page, be
on My Space, learn to text and read text and even try my hand at Twittering.
We are the premier organization sponsoring Youth Leadership Programs. If we are
to relate to these children and young adults, our future Kiwanians and citizens, come
and join me is this change. - Bob Dempsay

WHO WAS YOUR KIWANIS SPONSOR? By Paul Palazzolo, International President
Can you name the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize last
year? Who was the most valuable player in Super Bowl XLII?
Who asked you to join your Kiwanis Club?
The reason the last question is easier to answer is simply
because that person made a difference in your life. If I could
meet your Kiwanis sponsor, I’d proudly shake their hand in
gratitude. As a Kiwanian, when you help a child, it’s almost
as if your sponsor were involved. It’s a legacy of service.
Strengthening your club’s membership builds that legacy of
Kiwanis service. During 2009-10, I’m asking you to help your
club achieve its potential for service by achieving its potential for membership
strength. Your club can achieve its potential by coordinating four membership efforts
during the year:
October: Walk the Talk – All Kiwanis Leaders sponsor at least one new
member. It’s not too late to generate the momentum for this effort right now!
January: Stay Flexible by taking advantage of the new flexible membership
initiatives like satellite clubs and corporate membership.
May: Kiwanis Membership Month – Work with your club to plan now for a
full-scale effort.
September: Keep it in the Kiwanis Family by asking family and faculty of
your sponsored clubs to join your club.
As a leader in Kiwanis, October is the time to set the pace for an entire year of
membership growth. Please check out the details for each of these club membership
initiatives on the Kiwanis website at: www.kiwanisone.org/reveal and plan now to
grow for service.
The greatest gift of gratitude to your Kiwanis sponsor is to return the favor and
sponsor another new Kiwanian into your club. Let’s use the concepts in the ―Reveal‖
initiative to build that legacy of Kiwanis service. Thanks for making time to make a
difference.

THE POWER OF SERVICE (Continued)
You see, that’s how it was to Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was famous for giving
the person she was talking to at a given moment her full attention. ―I believe,‖ she
said, ―in person-to-person contact. Every person is Christ for me and since there is
only one Jesus,‖ she reasoned, ―the person I am meeting is the one person in the world
at that moment.‖ She believed that starting with individuals would add up to a much
different world. In the 1980’s, the population of Calcutta was between six and eight
million, of which more than 2,000,000 lived on the street. Sometimes, Mother Teresa
had to answer the charge that she and the Sisters were responding to only a tiny
fraction of the need. She replied: ―I do not add up, I only subtract from the total
number of poor or dying ... ― Her most famous response to the question of her
effectiveness cam in reply to a U.S. senator: ―God had not called me to be successful.
God has called me to be faithful.‖Mother Teresa and those who worked with her were
not paralyzed by the thought of what they could not do and so it should be with us. As
Kiwanians we should simply ask yourself, ―Is there one person I can help in some
small way today?‖
A great scripture in the New Testament, the Savior taught about the importance of
service. In the parable, He told of His return to the earth in His glory and of separating
the righteous from the wicked. To the righteous in this parable He says: ―Come ye
blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the
world: For I was an hungered and ye gave me meat, I was thirsty and ye gave me
drink, I was a stranger and ye took me in, naked and ye clothed me, I was sick and ye
visited me, I was in prison and ye came unto me.‖ The righteous who are puzzled by
this declaration ask, ―Lord when saw we thee an hungered and fed thee? Or thirsty
and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger and took thee in? Or naked and
clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison and came unto thee? Then the
Lord answers, ―In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my
brethren, ye have done it unto me (Matthew 25:34-40). We have this opportunity
everyday to help someone in need in our community. Some child that needs a book, or
clothes, or a doll or a playground to play at. This is what we do best as Kiwanis Clubs.
This is our calling.
As we honored those who passed on and their service we can also leave our own
legacy of service in our community. Service helps keep material goods and the things
of lasting value in their proper order and perspective. Material things will grow old,
break and end up in a landfill. Relationships built through service will last forever. In
addition to blessing the lives of others through service, service blesses the lives of the
one who is giving.
May I end with a statement from Anne Frank: ―How wonderful it is that nobody
need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.‖

With no other business the board meeting was adjourned at 2:10 PM.
RECRUITING QUICK TIP…
Contacting old friends
Many Kiwanians resign their membership because of increasing demands on their
time. Many of these are temporary situations and after some time has passed, the
former Kiwanians would be glad to rejoin. All you have to do is ask. One club
president asked the membership growth and retention committee chair to contact
members from up to six years past. Many had quit because of increased job
responsibilities or changes in their lives. Just by following up with the former
members, more than five joined the club, because their situations had changed once
again.

2009-2010 FIRST BOARD MEETING MINUTES (Continued)
Treasurer’s report and 2009-2010 budget were presented by Marv Chamberlain.
The District received most of its funds from dues and then from the District
Newsletter. The District Foundation Budget was also presented. There are two
separate bank accounts for these two entities.
The Foundation had to pay unpaid bills for Key Club District Convention in Salt
Lake City in the amount of $2,200 for unpaid rooms. There were also some refunds
for Int’l Convention. Please contribute to the Foundation. Bob Dempsay will discuss
funding for Key Club and the election of two new board members from Idaho at the
District Foundation Board Meeting this afternoon.
LaMar Anderson discussed the Annual Club Gift Campaign. Last year we resolved
to donate $6.00 per capita. We are now at $6.38 with 12 clubs who haven’t donated
yet. It would really be great to get the donation over $7.00 per capita. Japan,
Malaysia, Iceland have all donated more the $7.00 per capita.
A couple of individuals have donated extra for their clubs; this has brought our per
capita up. We have qualified for 6 CKI and 6 Key Club Scholarships for next year.
We need to match these scholarships through the District Foundation. We have not
raised $6,000 this year yet into the District Foundation.
Lt. Governors will receive updates twice a month. Please help get the clubs who
haven’t donated to get their donations in before Sept 30th
.
Hixon’s are an ongoing donation, but the Hixson Ambassador is a new one. See
the Foundation display on Saturday and see the new Hixson Ambassador medal at that
time.
Lt. Governor’s reports:
Div 2 – John Brown – Getting online and getting thrown offline. All clubs have
contributed to the Annual Gift, but not all have donated to the District. Will talk to all
clubs in division 2 who have not donated. Membership is up in the air with different
numbers: Kiwanis Int’l, Club and Online. All clubs are doing service projects.
Attended multiple meetings at all clubs in the division. Big push is for South Davis
getting their membership up.
Div 6 – Frankie Marler – 6 clubs. Had leadership council meeting every month +
guests. Has been helping Div 9 get their leadership council meetings going. Kiwanis
One Day was a highway clean-up for the division. Meridian had a push with 14 new
members. Lots of service projects going on. The division gave two $1,000
scholarships. Kuna High School Key Club is being reinstated. Meridian received
small business award in the community. Meridian will help Kuna with a membership
drive. The Yost Picnic is on Sep 9th.
Frankie read the Key Leader Camp report for Derek Schenk: Had a very successful
camp this year with 50 participants and 15 adults. The next Key Leader will be May
14-16, 2010 in Trinity, Idaho. Cost is $215 per participant. Club support is needed
and very important. John Brown wants Utah kids to attend the Idaho camp. There
were 5 from Utah last year. Bob Parish wants this brought up to the Foundation.
Marv said it is a budgeted item from the Foundation already. Derek needs more
money for 2010. Bob Parish flew his grandson in and is coming back in 2010.
Div 4 – Joaquin Blanco – Wants to revive the Blackfoot Club and increase
communication. Has to help himself before he can help kids. Need to be able to serve
better in community.
Div 5 – Cheryl Juntenen -- Hosts Key Leader. All leaders in club membership are
exceptional. Had a loss in membership, so need to build more Service Leadership
Program clubs. They have two new service projects. Burley has over 400 kids
involved in a soccer program. Hailey is a new club and a young membership –
sponsored an antique car show this year. Also they do the Rainbow Gold camp above
Ketchum, Idaho for kids with cancer and have a motorcycle group involved.
Christmas activity for kids: Making gingerbread houses.
Div 9 – Bill Ausburger – Has goals: Get all presidents and secretaries educated
through CLE; invite everyone to the civic center and get everyone done and online in
a mass training and will provide food; start a Kiwanis One Day – Go to Weiser, ID for
a day where all clubs will have a Kiwanis One Day with every other club involved in
each other’s communities.
Div 10 – Eugene Colledge – Two new High Schools: Salem & Eagle Mountain
(already working with Spanish Fork and Payson). Payson brought in over $18,000 at
the rodeo. Goal is better communication. Have one or more service projects together.
Div 8 – Rayleen Barnes – Putting together a scrapbook about all her clubs. Feels
really close to the members in the division. At Nashville (Int’l Convention) got online
and did the training.
Div 1 – Michael Gordon – Met with Orem Golden K and speaker was so very
interesting (collects WWI memorabilia, also built a cannon and a gatling gun).
Meeting again on Sep 21st. Donating $600 to a man who is starting orphanages in
Africa. Child abuse laws in Utah will be on Oct 5th

other Saturday. Having a BBQ contest and judging a banquet for the city (Kiwanis
will sell tickets to over 700 people). Price club is non-responsive.
CKI – Karl Greenwood – Gave a calendar of upcoming events, budget compared
to last year, financial statements and budget for upcoming year. Working with Brent
Ashworth to get a bank account for CKI. Dues structure: Int’l and District have
been on a per member basis, next year it will be $600 per club per year. Current is
$10 per member. Lt. Governors please speak with your clubs that sponsor CKI to
help out financially for next year. Thank you for donating to the Outreach Program.
CKI Governor – Kate Moir – Thank you to all clubs who support CKI. Kiwanis
needs to spend more time with CKI and get them included in Kiwanis service
projects. All college students need more service opportunities. CKI needs to be
invited by Kiwanis clubs to be included. Kiwanis should be setting the example and
let CKI know that they are wanted. If Kiwanis will support a new CKI, she would be
more than happy to help build a CKI at the local college or university. Need
donations to help push CKI and Kiwanis in the community.
Karl Greenwood can vouch for the feeling he felt when he was in CKI. Provo
club included them in the chuck-wagon breakfast on the 4th
of July.
There is an increase in District dues from $9.00 to $10.00.
Kate Moir – We need to be able to change things when needed. CKI is struggling
in Utah-Idaho. CKI members don’t see the support from Utah Kiwanis, so clubs are
struggling. CKI should be offered more from Kiwanis and Kiwanis Int’l. She is
training her club presidents this year and will get them to interact with each other.
Asking for faith in them and help them grow the CKI District. They are using the
club presidents as the voting delegates at the Oct 9-11 conference.
Marv moved to let CI have a method of governance. Seconded by Mike Gordon.
The vote was unanimous. They need templates for best practices.
Lauren Delana is the 1st elected CKI Int’l officer from U-I since 1996-97.
50th
Anniversary for CKI will be held joint with Mid-year conference for
celebrating Feb 26-28, 2010.
Bob Parish suggested getting Sylvester Neal to speak at Mid-year Conference.
Planning this conference for the University Park Marriott in SLC and the District
Convention in Provo in August.
Erland Elmer reported 35 club officers attended Mid-Year Conference. There
were 11 in session today. Rayleen tried it online. Will do some computer
workshops. Eleven were online for training Presidents and Secretaries. Four Lt.
Governors were trained today. New materials have been passed out to all Lt.
Governors who were in attendance. Look at the great material. It is the best from
over the last 15 years.
There are five members of the CLE Trainers. See Erland Elmer for the list. Give
lots of notice and he will have someone there to train. We want to teach our kids
leadership. Service will take care of itself.
Josh Holt – Do we have the new leadership guides? Everything is online. Pattie
will find the boxed that they haven’t opened yet.
Bob Dempsay – has papers to pass out.
1. Need a new Worldwide service project. Will be announced in Las Vegas in
June 2010.
2. On-to-Convention in June in Vegas. Guest speaker will be Jay Leno.
3. Walk the Talk
4. Stay flexible
5. Reach out
6. Keep it in the family.
We have been Kiwanians for a long time, so we should be the most flexible.
Chuck Baker was not in attendance, but the Int’l Convention is June 24-27th
.
Lowell Inkley – Would like to know of any area to build a new club in Utah.
Bob Parish – Would like to help build clubs in Idaho.
Would any clubs in any division like to have a speaker about growing your own
club? Lowell and Bob would be glad to speak.
Brent Ashworth has committed to building 4 new clubs this year: Eagle
Mountain, Saratoga Springs, continue satellite clubs, get some Aktion Clubs started.
Lowell and Bill Mullins have worked very well together building clubs. Norman
Taylor spoke about Zions Bank. He got a new member just last week. Pattie told the
story about getting Brent’s best friend to commit to join Kiwanis. Double the size of
Utah-Idaho Kiwanis by asking your friends to join.
Bob Parish – PAC Chairman receives mailing about Kiwanis Int’l positions.
Gordon Lewis deserves a huge round of applause. The website is fantastic. The
newsletter deadline is coming in three weeks. Need Lt. Governors to visit their clubs
and get the election reports in very soon.
Bob Dempsay needs the missing election reports in order to get the correct
information into the roster issue of the U&I Kiwanian, which is the very next issue.
PAGE 10
2009-2010 FIRST BOARD MEETING MINUTES (Continued)
New Lt. Governors need to encourage the current Lt. Governors to accomplish this.
Oct 24, 2009 – Board meeting in Tremonton, Utah at the Hampton Inn just off the
Interstates 84 and 15.
Brent Ashworth has about ¼ million books and some are children’s books. Need
books for kids donated so every child in U-I will receive a book of their own.
Lincoln during the height of the Civil War had an open door policy and tried to
reach out to the people. He received many documents on discipline. He asked that
these would be held until they heard from him. They never heard from him. He was
signing orders to commute sentence. Had a letter asking for clemency, but with no
attending documents. Didn’t this person have a friend? Was told he had no friends.
Lincoln said that he was this young man’s friend and signed the clemency document.
We are too small a group to not be friends with everyone in the District. We have
a project that is a lot bigger than we are. This is helping the youth of our District.
Let’s all be friends even with Kiwanis Int’l.
Two resolutions will be presented at the House of Delegates. The CKI resolution
was tabled. Bob Dempsay will write a resolution for $6.00 per member to go to SLP
or CKI? Will withdraw this until October board meeting where discussion will take
care of how this will be presented.
Adjourned at 4:08 p.m.
UTAH-IDAHO DISTRICT FOUNDATION BOARD MEETING FRIDAY, 21 AUGUST 2009 – 4:30 P.M.
Best Western – Burley Inn, Burley, Idaho
Welcome by President Bob Dempsay at 4:30 p.m.
In attendance: LaMar Anderson, Marvin Chamberlain, Bob Dempsay, Janet
Flinders and Jim Terry. Guests: Gov-Elect Brent Ashworth, Lt. Gov Div 2 John
Brown, CKI Administrator Karl Greenwood, CKI Governor Kate Moir and Immediate
Past Governor Bill Mullins.
Minutes from the August Board Meeting in March 2009 were presented. Marv
Chamberlain moved and Jim Terry seconded to approve. Vote was unanimous.
Karl Greenwood presented the CKI partial financials for Fiscal Year 2008-2009
and the Proposed Budget for 2009-2010. Some money will be returned to the
Foundation from excess from the District Convention. They came in about $200
under budget. They will need the same amount as last year: $9,000. They will be
having the students pay for their T-shirts this year.
Marv was pleased to receive financials and a budget. This year has been a
transition year and looks really good. Bob Dempsay commended Karl for doing a
great job.
Kate Moir, CKI Governor emphasized the need for $9,000. It is time to begin
charging CKI’ers for the meetings they need to attend. Please give CKI a chance to
begin getting some money back for District Convention and the Ski-Potato Land
Autumn Trainer (SPLAT).
Motion to give CKI $9,000 for the coming year was moved by Janet Flinders and
seconded by Jim Terry. The vote was unanimous.
Karl stated that they were working with the Foundation and Brent Ashworth to
have their own bank account. Bob Dempsay mentioned there would be legal
obstacles for CKI and Key Club to have their own bank accounts. This is being
worked through. Monies will run through the Foundation, but dues will be sent
directly to the CKI account from Kiwanis International. A report will be given to the
Foundation at Mid-year conference and during the summer as to how the monies were
expended. Instead of hiring someone to review their account, a couple of foundation
members will look over their expenses. They do need to decide whether they will be
incorporated in Utah or Idaho. Having an account at Wells Fargo Bank would make it
easy in either state. Bob Dempsay stated that this would help avoid problems.
There is a need to replace two board members: Outgoing members are Bob
Dempsay and David Howard. Pattie Hansen and Bob Parish have been asked to serve
for the Idaho term. Bill Mullins brought up that last year he could not be a member of
the Foundation Board because he was immediate past Governor. So Pattie Hansen is
not available to run until she completes her term on the Kiwanis District Board.
Marv moved to have Bob Parish and Josh Holt elected at the House of Delegates to
be on the Utah-Idaho Foundation Board. Jim Terry seconded. The vote was
unanimous.
Marv had previously presented the financials to the Kiwanis District Board and Jim
Terry moved to accept. LaMar seconded. The vote was unanimous.
Janet moved that Jim Terry was to be President of the Foundation Board. LaMar
seconded. The vote was unanimous.
Marv moved that Janet Flinders would continue as Secretary of the Foundation
Board. LaMar seconded. The vote was unanimous.
PAGE 11
DISTRICT FOUNDATION BOARD MEETING (Continued)
Jim Terry moved that LaMar Anderson would continue as Vice-President of the
Foundation Board. Marv seconded. The vote was unanimous.
Marv will make an announcement for any clubs who have donated and haven’t
received banner patches to please let him know.
Two Reed Culp Medals will be presented at the Installation Banquet Saturday
night: John Brown, Lt. Governor Div 2 and Charlene Ashworth, First Lady 2009-
2010. This will bring the total to 91 Reed Culp Medals.
Bob Parish asked about Key Leader. Marv said there was budgeted $2,000 and
restrict donations of $500. They may need more this year. We will wait to see is
more is needed. Key Leader will probably grow because it is doing such a good job.
Our finances are getting lower and lower. We hope that we will have a better year
in the stock market this coming year.
Bob Dempsay asked if the Mid-year Board Meeting could be on Skype, because
of Bob Parish’s traveling schedule. So we will not have to be present at Mid-year
Conference because we can do it electronically. Since Gene Piland is not in
attendance, this would be a good time to try it out, if we had the capability.
Jim Terry moved that if the need exists, this would be a good way to go. Marv
seconded. The vote was unanimous.
Since there is no resolution for CKI Outreach, Marv would like to be able to send
out letters asking for $150.00 to clubs who don’t sponsor a CKI club. Janet moved
and Bob Dempsay seconded. The vote was unanimous.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:17 p.m.
WEBINARS: KIWANIS EDUCATION
ON YOUR COMPUTER AND YOUR SCHEDULE
Your interest. Your time. Your computer.
That’s all it takes to participate in the latest trend in training: Kiwanis webinars.
Through webinars, Kiwanis can reach you with the information you need to guide
your club to be more organized, more fun, more attractive to members—information
on topics you’ve asked for - without asking you to leave the comfort of your own
home or office.
Never ―attended‖ a webinar before? No need to worry. Registering and viewing
are simple. First scan the current schedule for the topics that interest you and register
to view the webinar live. After registering, you’ll receive a confirmation e‐mail that
will contain a link to your webinar. This will be followed up with reminder e‐mails,
three days and then one hour before the event so you don’t forget.
At the scheduled time and day, follow the link in the confirmation e‐mail to join
the presentation. You’ll need speakers on your system to hear the presenter, and
you’ll be able to type in your questions.
Five to seven days after any scheduled webinar, the recorded version is archived.
So if you can’t find your desired subject on the current schedule, search the archives
for a past webinar that might meet your needs. You can view any archived webinar
anytime, and as many times as you’d like.
GROW AND BUILD CLUBS
Strong Kiwanis clubs with many involved, dedicated members mean more children
in your community, your state, your country, and the world can benefit. Just as
importantly, larger clubs have the opportunity to inspire more neighbors, friends, and
strangers who see Kiwanians selflessly working to make a difference. Here
are some tips for keeping your club healthy and growing.
Stay and serve. Always have a group of members at every club service project or
event from beginning to end. That way, the club always has a presence and someone
who can ―talk up‖ Kiwanis.
Throw a party. Send out personal invitations for a Special Guest Day, then follow
up with phone calls and emails. Why not invite special guests to your club several
times each year?
Be flexible. Consider changing your meeting times and frequency. Some clubs meet
only every other week. Some meet online.
Reach out. Participate in every community activity and event you can. It’s great
publicity. Learn more about how public relations can help you grow.
Learn from the best. Visit other clubs to get ideas. Get involved at the division,
district, and international levels.
Connect online. Learn more from other Kiwanis members on Kiwanis blogs.

MERIDIAN
KIWANIS CLUB
MEMBER,
AMANDA RIMBEY
IN THE NEWS
The Meridian Mayor’s
Anti-Drug Coalition
(MADC) honored Amanda
Rimbey on August 20,
2009, in recognition of her
outstanding work on
behalf of the coalition and
the arena of substance
abuse prevention. Rimbey
began work with the
MADC in 2006 when she
coordinated volunteers for
the Meth in Meridian
community event.
Building on her
involvement with that
event, she coordinated a
student project at the
University of Phoenix
around the needs of the
MADC, serving as project
manager of a 16 student
group working to create a
branding and marketing
campaign for the coalition.
Upon completion of this
project, Rimbey was asked
to chair the coalition and
served continuously as
Chair or Co-Chair until
May 2009. During her
tenure with the MADC,
her dedication and passion
for substance abuse
prevention drove the
coalition in conducting no
less than 18 programs each
year resulting in a 2006
City Achievement Award
presented by the
Association of Idaho
Cities, a 2008 Idaho’s
Brightest Star awarded by
Governor Butch Otter and
First Lady Lori Otter, the
2008-2009 Advocate of
the Year awarded by the
Meridian School District,
as well as the award in
2008 of a $625,000 federal
Drug Free Communities
grant.
SPOTLIGHT ON…

GRAPE PRINCIPLE
(Continued)
need to do to attract
those new members and
retain those already on your
roster.
Growth: Does your club
offer opportunities for
personal growth?
Through service,
members have the
opportunity to experience
their ―Kiwanis Moment,‖
the realization that they
have impacted someone’s
life for the better. It is from
that moment a person
becomes a true Kiwanian
and a more passionate and
empathic person.
Kiwanis also offers a
range of opportunities for
personal growth through
leadership training and
education, including
webinars - online
seminars—linked to our
Web site and workshops at
district and international
conventions. Make sure all
club members are informed
of these events and feel
invited to take part.
Recognition: Does your
club regularly show
appreciation for all that
members do?
Sometimes a pat on the
back, a quick ―thank you‖
is the only ―paycheck‖ a
volunteer needs. Other
times more formal
recognition such a
certificate presented at a
meeting is more
appropriate. It is good to
know what motivates your
volunteers, so that you can
express your gratitude in a
way that makes them feel
recognized and appreciated
When members feel
appreciated, they continue
to give of themselves, and
they share that positive
reinforcement with other
members.
Achievement: Does your
club give every member a
chance to lead projects and
solve problems?
Everyone wants to feel
successful, to feel part of
something good. Giving
members, especially new
members, the opportunity
to lead a task force, take
some responsibility or
contribute in some way,
PAGE 18
GRAPE PRINCIPLE
(Continued)
helps them be part of the
team and part of the
achievement. Be sure that
your club offers lots of
ways to get involved.
Participation: Is your
meeting environment
welcoming to everyone?
Does everyone feel
invited to join in the
discussion and share an
opinion? New members
bring new energy. Make
sure they feel welcome to
share that energy in
meetings, in committee
work and in the fun. When
discussing issues or
brainstorming, allow for
individual reflection and
group discussion in order
to accommodate different
personality styles. Invite
everyone to join in the
discussion and share an
opinion. Be aware of,
respect and understand
cultural differences. Use
icebreakers to acquaint
longtime members with
new recruits and guests.
Consider assigning
mentors to new members
to help them get familiar
with your club and its
projects, as well as the
Kiwanis organization.
Active, involved club
members tend to stay in
the club.
Enjoyment: Are your
meetings fun?
Members who see each
other regularly at
meetings, club social
events and serve side by
side will likely form
bonds. Encourage those
friendships by scheduling
regular social events and
allotting time in your
meeting agenda for
icebreakers or visiting.
Include interesting
speakers on your agenda
to ensure that your
members and prospective
members get something
out of every meeting.
Make fellowship a priority
and they’ll make
attendance a priority.
Using the GRAPE
principle your club can
give members and
potential members what
they are looking for.

Kiwanis Club of Pocatello
Happenings …
For about five years now, the
Kiwanis Club of
Pocatello has adopted a section of
the Edson Fichter Nature Trail
along the Portneuf River in
Pocatello. Attached to this e-mail
is a picture I recently took of the
sign along that trail, identifying our
club as a sponsor. We donate about
$500 each year to help maintain the
trail. This trail is very popular with
hikers, bicyclists, and wild plant
enthusiasts.
On Saturday afternoon, August 8th,
10 members of the Kiwanis Club of
Pocatello helped the Pocatello Zoo
conduct its annual fundraiser, called
"Zoofari". Over 1500 adults and
children attended this event,
enabling the zoo to raise just over
$10,000. Kiwanians helped by
taking tickets, and with face
painting of youngsters. We liked
this project so well that we've
already volunteered to do it again
next year.
BILLING PROCESSES
UNCHANGED DURING THE
2009 – 2010 YEAR
Since the International
Convention in Nashville, many club
leaders have called Kiwanis
International’s Member Services
Department for more information
about the Common Billing Date
and Graduated Enrollment Fee
schedule (currently referred to as
the New Member Processing Fee).
The important thing to know is
the changes will be effective
October 1, 2010, not 2009. All
billing processes and fees will
remain as they have for the past
several years during the 2009-10
year.
Prior to October 1, 2010, we will
provide additional billing
information for clubs in Groups 2
and 3, as well as Graduated
Enrollment Fee schedules for all
clubs.
In the meantime, don’t hesitate
to contact Member Services at
extension 411, or e-mail at
you have questions.

Seven Keys to the
Kiwanis Kingdom 1. A Caboose Never
Leads the Train No one
expects the last car on a
train to get anywhere
first—a true leader is the
engine the rest
of the cars follow. If the
engine doesn't reach the
station, nothing does. A
president does not have
to run every project and
committee but he or she
must always be first in line
to serve. Give your people
the best possible example
to follow.
2. The Cure for
Everything is Enthusiasm
No problem will face you
that cannot eventually be
overcome when met with
enthusiasm. Whatever your
club does, be as supportive
and excited about it as
possible. It’s the cure that
spreads like a disease!
3. Open a New Window
Nothing bores a room full
of Kiwanians quicker than
a ―Been There–Done That‖
approach. Set your goals on
journeying where your club
has never gone before in
some area. Use your
imagination and get out of
that box when envisioning
what your year as president
might include.
4. Remember Where the
Buck Stops Always protect
your team. No matter what
happens, accept
responsibility. Be
extremely quick in
assigning the credit
elsewhere and never duck
the blame. Jack Benny
never cared which of his
cast members got the
laughs—as long as they
were getting them on The
Jack Benny Show. In other
words—get over yourself.
5. Thank-You:
A Volunteer’s Only
Paycheck Recognize your
people. For anything and
everything! And put
something in their hands to
commemorate that
recognition. Not everything
has to be honored with a
plaque or a trophy. You
might be amazed to learn
how far a Kiwanis
pencil and a lavish word or
praise will take you. I went
from being a nondescript

Seven Keys
(Continued) club member to a full-
blooded Kiwanian in the
space of one 30-second
unexpected recognition. In
today’s depressed
economy, it remains the
most reliable investment. 6. Engines Need a Key to
Start A car’s motor won’t
turn over until someone
activates the ignition
process. Most people will
not follow you around
asking for something to
do, nor will they initiate
projects on their own.
Make it a point to extend
personal invitations to
service. Have a task
needing done? Don’t ask
the club for volunteers.
Approach a member and
say, ―How about you?‖
7. Expect the Best—And
Give It Let every
Kiwanian know that you
expect their very best. You
won’t get it from some but
you might be surprised
who will rise out of the
pack and make a
difference. And remember
you are the example they
will follow so start by
giving your very best.

NEW SERVICE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS
CHARTERING TOOLS:
INVESTING IN
LIFELONG SERVANT LEADERS
Kiwanis-family programs for youth, young adults and adults
living with disabilities can change lives—yours, theirs and
others’. Through Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs, club
members can earn scholarships, have fun with friends and
help their communities and the world. K-Kids, Bring Up
Grades, Builders Club, Key Club, Key Leader, Circle K
International and Aktion Club empower participants to make
an impact. By investing your time in these programs, you sow
the seeds of service—and a lifelong commitment to caring.
Is your Kiwanis club interested in chartering a new Service
Leadership Program?
The new Service Leadership Programs sponsorship guide
outlines each of the eight clubs and programs. And the three
easy steps to chartering—find, lead, serve—are explained in
detail. Contact Member Services today at 317-875-8755, ext.
411 (worldwide) or 800-KIWANIS, ext. 411 (USA and
Canada) to order the SLP sponsorship guide.
If you’re ready to charter and just need to download the
petition to charter and club bylaws, you can find resources at
www.kiwanis.org/charter.
The sponsorship guide and online tools are replacing the Club
Building #1 and Club Building #2 kits for each of the Service
Leadership Programs.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR
KIWANIS ONE DAY?
Kiwanis One Day is April 10, 2010, and it’s your club’s
chance to join others around the world for a day of hands-on
service. The more hands we have helping, the more lives we
will touch.
It’s time to start planning now for what your club will do for
Kiwanis One Day. And there are all sorts of fun things you
can do to get ready. Check out the One Day Game Plan. Read
other clubs’ success stories. Take a look at sample projects
around the world. Sign up for the One Day contest by January
15 for the chance to win a professional video of your project
or an article about your club’s project in KIWANIS magazine.
Get One Day media templates. (Remember, Kiwanis One Day
is not only an opportunity to conduct meaningful service, it’s
also a way to draw attention to Kiwanis and your club.)
And don’t forget that we’d love to hear what you decide to
do. Clubs that participate in One Day events should report
their project on the online monthly report form.
Plan early for a successful event!
