    U-Bahn Beton is a modular f ramework in recycled

    polypropylene that was specifical ly designed to create one

    way slabs that are cast on site or semi-prefabricated.

    The various m odules, which over lap o n the ed ges, m ake i t

    poss ib le to create beam s o f any length .

    Thanks to i ts conic elevator feet , immersing the U-Bahn

    Beton formworks in the concrete cast ing wi l l obtain thick,

    para lle l beams that are c losed f rom the b ot tom and top b y a

    flat plate mad e in sequ enc e w ith a single c ast ing; this results

    in reduc ed use o f conc rete and s tee l as w ell as cons iderab le

    advantage s in terms o f fire risk in co m parison to formw orks in

    expanded po lys tyrene.

    Light and stackable, i t is easy to handle during posi t ioning,

    funct iona l in i ts use, c an be exposed to bad weather and i s

    easy to store in the yard wi th minimum dimensions.

    Designed according to st r ict qual i ty cri teria, the U-Bahn

    Beton f ramework is guaranteed to resist without

    concrete 150 kg concent ra ted on a load impr in t o f 8 x 8

    cm, as foreseen by current regulat ions.

    Unl ike wi th the use of classical hol low b rick bloc ks, the

    empty spac e left byU-Ba hn Beton ca n be used for the

    pass ag e of cab les and systems.

    U-Bahn Beton is the ideal solut ion for creat ing lightened one way slabs for al l

    types of st ructures:

    residential, commercial, executive, industrial buildings as well as public

    structures (schoo ls, hos pitals, etc ).

    U-Bahn Beton is fundamental ly used in al l appl icat ions that require one way

    beams and s labs as wel l as a reduced use o f concrete and reduced weight .

    Wi th U-Bahn Beton s labs wi th a greater thickness can be created wi th less

    concrete .

    A part icu lar type of use o fU-Ba hn Beton is for co nstruct ions carried o ut using

    the top-downtechnique (by co m partmen ts or layers) wh ere instead o f working

    f rom the bot tom upward, work i s per formed f rom the top downward; fi rs t the

    slab is created and then the excavat ion is made.

    Underground parking buildings in historical ci ty centres are of ten created

    using this technique due to the obvious constraints related to the presence ofnum erous b ui ldings as we ll as the ne ed to q uickly restore t raffic flows.

    For projects that use this technique, i t is of st rategic importance to supply the

    yard w i th l ight-w eight and n on- bulky ma terial .

    Positioning

    The ent i re surface of the s lab to be cast on s i te is shut tered wi th

    w ood dec k (or s im ilar systems ), then the w elded reinforcem ent i rons

    and m esh are pos i tioned acco rd ing to the des ign and the spac ing

    latt ice for the up per reinforceme nt is arrange d.

    The pos i t ioning is completed by c los ing the open final ends of the

    U-Bahn Beton formwork wi th a lateral c los ing plug above which

    the reinforcements, welded mesh as wel l as the inst ruments forcut t ing and punc h ing are p os i tioned acco rd ing to the des ign.

    Once sui tably set , the cast ing can be restarted f rom the s tart ing

    po int, com pletely bury ing the U-Ba hn Beton . The cas t ing is then

    levelled and sm oothe d in a t radi tional manner.

    The U-Bahn Beton formworks are pos i t ioned wi th the des ired

    centre dis tance that wi l l determine the width of the beams. Thanks

    to the conic elevator foot , the U-Bahn Beton formworks wi l l be

    l i f ted f rom the surface, making i t poss ible for the lower s lab to be

    formed.

    The systems wi l l be arranged in the internal cav i t ies of the

    formworks .

    The conc re te cas t ing m us t be p er formed in two phases to p revent

    the floatation of the formworks: an init ial layer wil l be cast to form

    a thickness equal to the height of the elevator foot . Cast ing wi l lcont inue for this firs t port ion of the s lab unt i l the concrete s tarts to

    set and bec om e less flu id .

    Once the s t ruc ture has hardened, the formwork can be removed.

    The surface is smooth in correspondence of the soffi t .

    Even if polystyrene is w idely used in the c ons truc t ion indus try due to i ts low c ost and wo rkabi li ty, i t has m any disadvantag es that are being

    addressed by the technical-scient ific communi ty.

    With reference to l ightened slabs, the I tal ian Ministerial Decree of 16.02.2007 to enclosure D.5.1 establ ishes that : In the c ase ofpolystyrene formworks, or formwo rks in similar materials, there must be approp riate vents for the overpressures. Even prior to

    this, the UNI 9502 standard - art ic le 7.2.2 - establ ished that : In the case of elements incorpo rating materials that when sub ject to

    high temperatures turn to gas, there must be app ropriate vents facing the side exposed to fire to ensure that the bearing capacity

    is not compromised by explosions.

    Therefore, using p olystyrene s labs cas t on si te requ ires the extra expen se o f fit t ing ven ts in the c avity to cou nteract the exce ssive pressu re

    of gas that is subl imated by the formwork. However, in the event of a fire there would st i l l be the problem of toxic gas escaping into the

    environm ent (styrene).

    As U -Bahn Be t on is mad e of p olypropylene, i t is not toxic e ven i f bu rnt . Moreover, the slab w i ll not explode d ue to the e sc aping o f over

    pressurised gas f rom the feet (4 every 20 cm of the formwork) that act as safety valves.

    Other advan tages o f U-B ahn Be tonco mp ared to EPS are the d im ensions, hand ling ( just th ink of transferring it overhead on the s labs be ing

    buil t) and outd oor storage. P olystyrene is , in fact, bulky and c annot b e stac ked; i t is part icu lar ly fragi le on i ts ed ges and c orners that crum ble

    leaving tho se ann oying bal ls that, s tat ica l ly ch arged, s t ick to everyth ing (espec ia lly to the re inforcem ents) and are very hard to get r id of.

    Specifi cations

    Creation of a one way slab in reinforced concrete to be cast on site on suitable horizontal formwork (or on a prefabricated plate). The total

    thicknes s o f the slab is ______ cm , to be part ially l ightened (acc ording to the de sign) wi th recyc led plast ic mo dules, suc h as U-Ba hn Beton

    f rom the Daliform G roup, wi th an extended form o f 120 c m w ith an isosc eles trapezoid sec t ion w ith a max base o f 40 c m he ight 20 cm , wi th a

    length that can be divided in su b-m ult iples of 2 0 cm and joinable in l ine tog ether to overlap the final edg e; sup pl ied wi th 24 t runcated -pyramidalfeet that are 4 cm in height, resting on the horizontal support for the formation of the thickness of the soffit suitably reinforced with welded

    mesh, 10 x 10 cm , w ith a 5 mm stee l rod.

    This inc ludes the su pp ly and p osit ioning of the U-Ba hn Beton mo dules to b e placed in p arallel, sui tably distanced rows to form co nt inuous

    jo ists b et w ee n b eam s that are c losed on the ir resp ec tive fina l tunne ls w ith c los ing p an els ; a w eld ed m esh 2 0 x 2 0 c m - 5 m m is p lac ed

    above the formw orks. The upp er and lower reinforcemen ts wi ll be co nnected , in the joists, wi th vert ical C-shap ed s teel hooks min 8 m m

    placed at a c entre distance o f 30 c m along the joist axis.

    Also included is the supply and casting of the concrete needed to create the slab (in the ful l and l ightened zone), fil l ing and vibrating first the

    part under the formworks unti l completely covering the feet of the U-Ba hn Beton (no further) (minimum resistance class C25/30, fluidity

    class S5 and diameter of aggregates suitable, in order to avoid phenomenon l ike segregation), the casting wil l then continue unti l the slab

    is completed as soon as the first layer starts to set (in this second phase, a fluidity class different than the previous one is permitted) unti l the

    slab is c om pleted wi th the format ion of a min 4 cm layer. The horizontal supp ort formw ork, welded me sh, reinforcemen t bars, beam cage s

    and vert ical C-shap ed c onnec tors wi ll be en tered so me where else.TheU-Ba hn Beton modules must be safe to walk on and cert ified wi th a resistance characterist ic of 150 kg in the weakest point on a

    square sup port of 8 x 8 cm ; must not release p ol lut ing sub stances, have an Environmental Compatibility Certificationand be p roduced

    by a com pany that is equipped w ith an Integrated M anagem ent System (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, S A 8000); the company

    supplying the U-Ba hn Beton modules must report construct ively to the designer and the yard manager upon supply and prior to the

    creat ion o f the slab, ad apt ing their product to the execu t ive d esign, integrating i t when nece ssary, the c om pany m ust also exhibi t the p roduc t
