Potential Energy Energy of POSITION or STORED energy

Page 3: Types of Energy

1. CHEMICAL ENERGY energy stored in the

bonds of atoms

Examples are gasoline (petroleum) FOOD Natural gas Propane Coal

Page 4: Types of Energy

2. NUCLEAR ENERGY Energy stored in

the nucleus of an atom

Examples are Nuclear reactors uranium

Page 5: Types of Energy

3. STORED MECHANICAL/ Elastic ENERGY

Energy stored in objects because of the application of a force

Examples are Stretched rubber

band Compressed springs

in a mattress or couch

Page 6: Types of Energy

4. GRAVITATIONAL ENERGY Energy stored because of somethings

place or position

Examples are Water at the top of a dam Rock at the top of a hill Book sitting on a desk

Page 7: Types of Energy

KINETIC ENERGY Is energy of MOTION

Page 8: Types of Energy

5. RADIANT ENERGY Electrogmagnetic

energy that travels in waves

Examples are Visible light Solar energy Radio waves X-rays Gamma rays

Page 9: Types of Energy

THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM •TRAVELS IN WAVES

•NOT ALL LIGHT IS VISIBLE

Page 10: Types of Energy

6. THERMAL ENERGY Energy from the

vibration of atoms and molecules

Examples are HEAT Geothermal heat

Page 11: Types of Energy

7. MOTION (Mechanical) ENERGY

Energy from the movement of objects

Examples are Wind (turns windmill) Hydropower- going

over dam Ball flying through air You walking

Page 12: Types of Energy

8. SOUND ENERGY Energy of longitudinal

waves

Examples are Music Talking

Waves travel into ear, hits eardrum that vibrates hairs and tiny bones in ear, then sends signals to brain.

9. ELECTRICAL ENERGY Energy from the

movement of electrons

Examples are Electricity Lightning

Now… Use your notes to fill in the blanks on

the back of your paper. Note that there is a word bank at the

bottom. Words can (and will) be used more than

once. Papers are due when you leave class

today (need to be complete!!)
