While the majority of suspects were arre- sted in Gauteng, as reported by City Press, a number of them were linked to reconnais- sance and attacks at local malls. The larger group was accosted after police recovered and analysed cellphone data and the operating network of members of the syndicate arrested in Cape Town. The group is currently linked to at least 34 robberies, including those of cellphone and jewellery stores, and a number of ATM bombings, City Press reported. Some of the armed robberies to have hit the Cape since last year include those at Ca- nal Walk, Tyger Valley, CapeGate, Somerset Mall, Zevenwacht Mall, as well as Longbe- ach Mall, Bayside Mall and High Constantia. Data tracking In Kraaifontein, police had reportedly been hunting two suspects involved in the bombing of an ATM inside the Seven Eleven in Northpine on 18 February. Canal Walk and Bayside shopping centres were targeted by robbers in the week of 17 October last year, while the Vodacom store in the Tyger Valley Centre was hit on 3 Octo- ber last year. Zevenwacht Mall in Kuils River as well as the iPic Centre in Soneike, were both targe- ted as far back as April last year. Of these, the most recent was the bombing of an ATM in Bellville, which proved one of the biggest mistakes for at least six suspec- ted members of the syndicate. These suspects were involved in a standoff with a police General at the ATM bombing at the Old Oak Centre on 4 March, and were being tracked by a special police task force. The task force was aware of the six making their way to the Western Cape by bus, City Press reported. Police soon used the data from the sus- pects’ cellphones and surmised the group had been scouting centres in Brackenfell and Tyger Valley – both of which were hit late last year. The suspects are believed to have bombed the ATM after they ran out of money. Two were wounded and arrested on the scene, and the rest at the nearby taxi rank. Their recovered cellphones were used to link them to robberies at Sea Point, Malmes- bury, Canal Walk, Gardens and Stellen- bosch. The six suspects were also believed to ha- ve been involved in the bombing of a Tatter- salls safe in Durban Road on 3 March. Provincial police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said investigations were at an advanced stage. Behind bars According to the Institute for Security Studies, there has been a 143% increase in armed robberies at shopping centres over the past year. But national police spokesperson Lieute- nant General Solomon Makgale told City Press most of the suspects responsible for the robberies in Gauteng and the Western Cape were now behind bars. “There are, however, still a few of their as- sociates – along with the dealers to whom the cellphones are sold – at large. We are now focusing on them.” Police were said to be using the cellphone data and video footage from centres to iden- tify individuals. “All the information is consolidated to compile profiles of the ringleaders, as well as their modus operandi,” Makgale was re- ported as saying. This allowed the creation of a police data- base that could be cross-referenced across the provinces. “It gives us an intelligence picture that al- lows us... to thwart the plans of robbers, par- ticularly at shopping centres,” Makgale was reported as saying. “It is also clear the syndicates are multidi- mensional in that they not only carry out dif- ferent types of robberies, but also hijack ve- hicles, rob ATMs and commit other violent crimes.” Most of the suspects arrested in Gauteng were of Zimbabwean nationality, City Press reported. Company bust for oil pollutionDESIRÉE RORKE

@dezzierorke

Authorities will now monitor clean-upefforts after a Joostenbergvlaktetrucking companywas bust for oil pol-

lution by City inspectors.Environmental health officials from the

City of Cape Town recently inspected West-ern Logistix’s premises in Waarburgh Roadafter neighbours complained about oil seep-ing from the ground.“A winter ago we first noticed the oil sur-

facing from the soil, leaving a thick dark oilyresidue on the grass,” said one neighbourwho wants to remain anonymous.“It clung to the grass and nothing we did

got rid of it, leaving our animals to grazethe polluted grass,” she added.Another neighbour told TygerBurger he

sawworkers on the company’s premises dig-ging trenches inwhich todeposit usedmotoroil.“As a consequence, trees and grass on our

properties died. This company is operatingin an equestrian areawith anaturalwetlandclose by. Winter is coming and more of thesame with the rain will lead to poisonouscontamination of epic proportions. We haveanimals at risk. Thewetlands are at risk, thewater table is at risk as we believe it has al-

ready been affected at 120m,” this particularneighbour said.

Foul liquidCitymaycomember for health, Siyabulela

Mamkeli, said officials car-ried out an inspection at theWestern Logistix’s premiseson 19 March.“An environmental health

practitioner (EHP) found afoul liquid – used oil and sew-age water – running directlyonto the premises and intothe stormwater channel, which also affects the abut-ting premises,” he said.“These activities are unac-

ceptable and defined as ahealth nuisance, and defi-nitely in contravention ofthe City’s by-laws and other legislation,” headded.Mamkeli said the level of pollution must

now be determined by environmental con-sultants, which the owners of company re-sponsible for the pollution must appoint toremedy the situation.“Notices were served on the owner by the

City’s environmental health and water pol-lution control sections to immediately cease

the pollution and to remedy the site that ispolluted.”Mamkeli said theownersmustprovide the

City with their plan of action to remedy thesituation by tomorrow (9 April).

“After the mentioneddate, a follow-up inspectionwill be conducted and if noprogress has been made, le-gal action will be takenagainst the offender,” hesaid.

Oil spillOwner Ferdi Krumm told

TygerBurger they take fullresponsibility for the pollu-tion and undertake to coop-erate with authorities toprevent any further spillson the property and to rem-

edy the affected areas. However, he denied allegations that used

oil was buried in trenches on the property. He explains the oil spills as follows:“All the old oil in our trucks gets decanted

into a 1000F flexitanker for collection by theRose Foundation, a non-profit organisationin Cape Town that collects, stores, recyclesand correctly disposes of used oil,” saidKrumm.

“During the last year it happened on oneor two occasions that oil was spilled on thesoil while being piped out,” he explained. He said the companywill hire a consultant

to conduct a full study to determine the bestway in which to rehabilitate the soil andthen see to it that it gets done.“We are also planning to move the opera-

tion to another location on the other side oftheN1, but have in themeantime applied forthedeparture from thenormal zoning activi-ties of the area,” he said.Western Logistix is one of tens of compa-

nies in Joostenbergvlakte slappedwith com-pliance notices earlier this year for illegalland use.City councillor Gerhard Fourie in Janu-

ary said the practise of semi-industrial ac-tivities in semi-rural areas had “gone on forfar too long”.Fourie said diesel depots, trucking compa-

nies and wedding venues were amongmanycompanies not legally zoned for business ac-tivity in Joostenbergvlakte, andwere servedwith notices giving them the choice to closedown or apply for departure from the agri-cultural zoning. These applications, said Fourie, will only

be approved in terms of the strict zoning leg-islation and residents given the opportunityto object.

the grass.”- Neighbour

Lohann Roelofse was bornwith extra toes and webbedfingers. But now this ex-

traordinary young man intendsputting hismoneywhere his feetare, in a long walk for charity. The young leader aims to raise

funds for the Chaeli Foundationby walking from Struisbaai toBloubergstrand on a quest hecalls the Coast to Coast Walk, which started yesterday. As a deputy head boy in Grade

12 at Stellenberg High, Lohann’sadventure began long before hisplans for this big walk, which hehopes to finish at his school on13 April. It started with a dream. And a

wheelchair. His father, Pierre, tells the story.“Lohann was born with an extra big toe

on each foot and all his toes joined. He alsohad a tiny extra small finger on both handsand his middle finger and ring finger onboth hands were joined.”At birth the extra fingers were removed

and by age two, Lohann had had a numberof operations to separate his fingers. By agethree his extra big toes were amputated.“When he was 10 years old, it was discov-

ered that thebones inhis feetwerenot grow-ing,” Pierre says.“By cutting the bone in half and then in-

serting steel pins into eachpiece of bone, thebone was ‘stretched manually’ – we had toturn the screws on the pins four times a dayto ‘pull the pieces of bone apart’,” Pierresays.

“It was a long and painful process and hewas in a wheelchair for almost six months.During that time he realised the hardshipsof being in a wheelchair and discoveredwhat it felt like not being able to do every-thing as easily as he used to.”Lohann soon heard adventurer and phi-

lanthropist David Grier talk about his ownadventures and decided he wanted to do atrip around theWesternCape – inhiswheel-chair. This remained a dream, however, says Pierre, because of practicalities likedangerous roads, passes and rocky beach-fronts, among others. But a seed had been planted.“When he was appointed deputy head

leader at Stellenberg High School last yearhe again started talking about this dream,”Pierre says.In a school environment where learners

are encouraged to become in-volved in community servicesand projects, his son decided tostart pursuing his dream.“He then decided to walk and

use his wheelchair where possi-ble, and to go from one placealong the coast and end at anoth-er city or town along the coast. So he came up with the slogan– Coast to Coast: Walking forWheelchairs,” Pierre says.Lohann’s quest will see him

raise funds for the Chaeli Foun-dation, which uses the moneyfor wheelchairs for children.About 20%will go towards his

school’s own charitable causes,Pierre says.School principal Theo Boonz-

aaier voiced their support in astatement: “(Lohann) will walk

for charity... from Struisbaai. We expecthim at Stellenberg High School on Monday13 April at 10:00.”The Chaeli Foundation’s Shelly Stedman

says: “Due to Lohann’s own personal histo-ry he realised first-hand the hardships thatpeople with disabilities experience.”She adds the campaign runs eight pro-

grammes in support of children with disa-bilities and is actively involved in mobilis-ing the minds and bodies of children.“There is a great need within the field of

disability, not only for assistive devices, equipment and treatment programmes, butalso for community education, understand-ing of disability and the normalisation of so-ciety through the inclusion of people withdisabilities,” Shelly says.V Donations are welcome and the family can be con-tacted for more details at [email protected].

motorists still refuse to take seriously theconstant warnings and calls by emergencyservices and authorities to have childrenproperly restrained in vehicles.“On a daily basis while on the road you

will find young children jumping on backseats, hanging out of windows and sittingon passenger’s laps,” Bodasing said.Parents maintain how they grew up wit-

hout this essential and survived, Bodasingsaid.“Parents may also tell you that their chil-

dren do not like being restrained and cryconstantly. Some parents insist you not tellthem what to do with their children. Timeshave changed.”An increase in the number of vehicles on

the road today, as well as the numerous dis-tractions on the roads, make restrainedchildren in car seats thebest and safest opti-on.

“The sad truth is ER24 and other emer-gency services attend to horrific collisionsinvolving children on a weekly basis.“(The) majority of unrestrained children

are flung out of vehicles and either sustaincritical injuries or die in collisions.“For those parents who cannot afford

new car seats, remember that there are or-ganisations that sell secondhand car seatsor hand them out for an affordable donati-on.”The same goes for older children.“Make sure they are restrained appropri-

ately. Remember, you cannot undo death. The choice you make could be the differen-ce between life and death,” Bodasing said. They offered the following advice:VInfants should ride rear-facing at least

until they are a year old. Once outgrown, they should use a convertible safety seat.

VOnce this is outgrown, they should usea forward-facing safety seat with a full har-ness. This should be used until they exceedthe weight and/or height limit set by themanufacturer of the seat.

VChildrenwhohave outgrowna converti-ble safety seat should use a booster seat.

VChildrenwho are tall enough to wear anadult seat belt should still ride in the backseat until they are 13 years old.

VAdjust the seat belt so the lap belt cros-ses the child’s upper thighs and the diago-nal belt crosses the upper chest at a pointbetween the neck and shoulder.

There is a unique clinic at theStikland Hospital helping towean heroin and other opiateaddicts off drugs by offeringsubstitute substances. The Opiod Substitution Ther-

apy (OST) Clinic treats outpa-tients and offers a brief admis-sion for heroin detoxification.Professor Liezl Koen, head of

clinical services at StiklandHospital, said the “highly un-pleasant withdrawal syn-drome” makes it very hard foraddicts to stop using heroin.Abdominal cramps, anxiety,

irritability, muscle aches, diar-rhoea and a raised pulse andblood pressure often makes de-toxing unbearable.“The Heroin Detoxification

Unit offers heroin users a one-week admission to help themthrough this withdrawal peri-od,” Koen said. When more conventional de-

toxmethods failed, substitutiondrugs were employed.“Opioid substitution involves

the medication such as Metha-done or Suboxone as a substi-tute to heroin,” said Koen. She said these medications

prevented withdrawal symp-toms, reduced cravings andgave patients the chance to “sta-bilise their social functioningand reduce drug activities”.“It is considered a safe and ef-

fective treatment for a heroinuse disorder,” she said. The OST Clinic takes place at

the hospital on aMondaymorn-ing from 08:00.

“Prior to being admitted tothis unit all clients are expectedto have had an adequate assess-ment, provided with psycho-ed-ucation around the detoxifica-tion process and on dischargeare expected to join a rehabilita-tion centre that will assist cli-ents in maintaining a drug freelifestyle,” said Koen. Before starting the process,

clients are informed of the sideeffects associatedwith substitu-tion therapies, that these treat-ments are currently only avail-able at certain private pharma-cies, and of the costs of thesemedications.Only clients who have been

referred by a social worker ordoctor are allowed to use theclinic’s services. The clinic hastwo in-house psychiatrists anda psychiatric registrar.Edna Lambrechts, a social

very successful. It has the high-est success rate in South Africafor thesekindof services,”Lam-brechts said. The cost differs per patient

per medication and Lam-brechts called on churches andNGOs to support the clinic, orsponsor patients requiringtreatment.“We need to get clients into

Cats must be keptin their own yards

We have also had endlessissues with the cats.Just like people love their

cats we love our birds, fish anddog. Never do they cause anyissues in the neighbourhood. They live and stay on ourpremises. The cats have eaten birds and

neighbours but now they ignoreme like I am the plague. They have replaced fish but

the new ones also got eaten. Oh,and our birds are just commonbirds you can get anywhere. It is not fair, the cats do this

and also poo all over my gardenand dig up our plants.I am just expected to put up

lacking, and crime is spirallingout of control. I previouslywrote a letter to TygerBurgerconcerning the squatters onOccuvision’s stoep, and thisweek I noticed another letter inthis regard.I was hoping the owners of

Are we going towait until they make a hole inthe wall at Lifestyle Fabrics, setthe building alight, use it forall sorts of illegal activities, etc? The owners of the building

Pet theft is on the rise, warns Jennifer Da-vies of Fisantekraal Animal Welfare(FAW).Top breeds targeted are Boerboels, Ger-

manShepherds,Huskies,Malamutes,Wolfhybrids,Rottweilers, PitBull Terrier,Bull-terriers, Staffordshire Bullterriers andGreyhounds.Yorkshire Terriers and other toy breeds

are increasingly popular. Persian and Sia-mese cats are also sometimes taken, Da-vies says.“Many people still don’t realise pet theft

is a very real problem. Stolen animals, usu-ally purebred dogs, are taken mainly forbreeding, guarding or dog fighting.“By not taking proper precautions, you

areputtingyour animals at risk, especiallyif you’ve chosen to keep a high risk breed. It’s very sad because most stolen dog casescould be prevented,” Davies says.According to the National Animal Wel-

fare Task Team, the main reason dogs arestolen is for breeding. Therefore, unneu-tered male dogs, lactating or pregnant fe-males or those on heat, and puppies are atparticular risk.“These ‘puppy mill’ dogs live in horrific

conditions and usually meet an equallyhorrific end,” Davies says.Thieves even lure unneuteredmale dogs

bywalkinganon-heat bitch throughneigh-bourhoods.“By having your pet sterilised, you re-

duce the risk of their theft and save everyanimal yourpetwould otherwisehave end-ed up giving birth to.“Responsible, caring pet owners who ar-

en’t registered breeders should have theirpets sterilised,” Davies says. Most dogs are stolen from their homes

–many are opportunistic crimes, but oftenthieves have been watching for a while.“Never leave dogs – especially puppies

or toy breeds – alone and visible, especiallyif you’re out all day. Consider ‘doggy day-care’ or leave them indoors.“Dogshave evenbeen stolenwhen let out

to ‘do their business’, so accompany them.If need be, separate front and back yardsand hide your dogs at the back. Even ifyour dog avoids strangers, it could still bedrugged or snagged with a catch pole,” shewarns.“Be aware of strangers in the area, in-

cluding children, especially if they arepeering into yards, watching dog walkersor questioning you about your dog.“Never allow dogs to roam the street or

leave them in your car or tied up in frontof a shop,” she says.Davies suggested pet owners put a collar

and tag on their pet and have them micro-chipped.The FAW, which works in the township

of Fisantekraal near Durbanville, hasmany adorable animals up for adoption. Ifyou can’t adopt, butwould like to help, con-sider joining the sponsorship programmefor only R200 per month. They often rely solely on thegenerosity of kind animal lovers, but dona-tions do not always to keep up with demand.Foster families are often not able to be pro-

vided with food, and bills for feeding ani-mals at havens and shelters, are enormous.Together, they found a local pet food man-

ufacturerwho agreed to let themhave all the

slightly damaged, underweight and over-weight tins, if they just arranged to fetchthem from the factory.Yvonna jumped at the opportunity and

managed the pick-up and distribution of thefood. Thus far, an incredible 30 000 tins offresh pet food have been collected and dis-tributed to charities. Irregular tins, normal-ly destined for a landfill, have helped chari-ties as far afield as Upington, Saldanha andeven KZN.Reese shared the windfall on Pawfriends’

facebook page and so far approximately 30groups have come to collect much neededfood for their animals.Reese and Yvonna, who both work with

animals in very poor areas, are hopeful thatthe supply will continue. If it does, theywould like to continue to share the bounty. The more animals with full tummies andwagging tails, the better! If any animal group would like to benefit

from the next delivery, contact Yvonna orReese through facebook (https://www.face-book.com/pawfriendsCT?fref=ts) or phoneReese on 082 066 2693.

Having spent the past two years in so-mething of a freefall, French motormanufacturer Peugeot has come back

with a splash.Their latest offering, thePeugeot 308, ticks

all the right boxes. The newcomer has achieved many motor-

ing accolades, cumulating inbeingvotedEu-ropean Car of the Year while also boastinga staggering 240 000 unit sales worldwide.Recently Peugeot South Africa extended

an invitation to motoring journalists to testthe Peugeot 308 and put it through its pacesin the KZNMidlands. What a revelation theevent proved to be. Exterior-wise, the 308combines flowing lines with an aggressivestance, the design being bold and refined.Sporting wide wheel arches, a lowered

ground clearance and a streamlined silhou-ette, the new 308 receives its power from avery perky 1.2 litre direct injection three–cylinder turbo-petrol in various forms, theentry level Active model pushing out 81kWand 205 Nm and the GT Line 96kW/230Nm.Transmission is offered in five and six-speedratios with slick gear changes being the or-der of the day. Out on the highway or twistyrural roads, the new 308 comes into its own,the combination of ultra light platform anda comfortable yet firm ride providing thedriver with noticeable handling and ma-noeuvrability.The small electric steering wheel and

head-up instrument display allows access toinformation without taking one`s eyes offthe road. Attractive 16 inch alloywheels andsix-speaker Touch Screen infotainment sy-

stem complete with Bluetooth audio, as wellas cruise control, aircon and Hill Start As-sist are included in the retail price of R275900 for the Pure Tech Active Model.Moving upwards, the Peugeot 308 GT Line

offers dual zone climate control, adjustablemassaging front seats, automaticwipers andheadlights and electronic handbrake. Alsowithin specs areABS andESP stability cont-rol, while safety features include side andcurtain airbags. Cosmetics feature 17-inchalloy wheels, LED headlamps, central em-blem orientated grille and electronic fold-ingloss black side mirrors. Seats are upholste-red in Leather/Alcantara and red stitching.Price quoted on GT Line amounts to

R329 900. Over many years French motormanufacturers have been inclined to overelaborate interior features, Peugeot have de-cided to simplify basic innovation, the new308 range sporting a large multifunctionscreen at the top of the centre console per-mitting access to functions with ones finger-tips, making for easier use.Of importance is the fact that all new 308

models include a Full Maintenance 5-ye-ar/60 000km Premium Plan.A full 10 colour range is on offer which en-

velops new shades of red, blue, silver andbrown metallic, all adding to the appeal ofthe newcomer while showing-off brightchrome surround beadings. In summary, the newPeugeot 308 is set for

a bright sales future in SouthAfricawith de-alers being prepared to bring a new modeltowould-be-purchasers’ door for evaluation, the slogan being “We come to you”, So clickon to www.wecometoyou.co.za and testdrive one for yourself.

‘Manne se harte was op regte plek’

ronde spel, doeltreffende inklimwerk by dielosskrums en veel beter agterlynspel wathulle uiteindelik welverdiend laat seëvierhet.

MOTOR RACING: ZWARTKOPS ROUNDABOUTS AND KILLARNEY SWINGS

One class hits the trackADRIAN PHEIFFER

The second round of the South Africanmain circuit championship due to takeplace in conjunction with the Extreme

Festival, sponsored by Wingfield Motors, atKillarney on Saturday is expected to be thebiggest meeting of the year.Topping the bill, the national production

cars are to be seen in a virtual one class for-mat for the first time. This has come aboutafter the class T entries received more mus-cle by being allowed additional turbo boost, larger tyres and unrestricted suspensionmodifications. The results of the three events during the

first round at Zwartkops last month whichsaw Michael van Rooyen’s turbochargedChev Cruze win the first race, with class AAudi S4s in the hands ofHennieGroenewaldand Michael Stephan taking the next two, appear to justify the changes. However, the pit critics were claiming the

tyre wear on the abrasive surface worked tothe benefit of the all wheel drive Audis. Ad-ditionally, Killarney has longer straightsthatmaybeanadvantage for the smaller tur-bocharged Chev and Ford Focus STs.It sounds like a close one.

Driver to watchBrennon Green (Golf 5 GTi) is the Cape’s

only representative in a new production carcategory for privateers. Hismain oppositionis likely to come from Freek Burger Jnr andSnr, who were outstanding at Zwartkops ina pair of Mazda 3 MPSs.

Then there are some who claim the skrikvir niks tigers in the EngenVolkswagen Cupevents are always responsible for some ofthe best racing of the day. Of course the driv-er to watch here is teenager Sheldon van derLinde forwhombig things are being predict-ed. Although Sheldonwon the first round upnorth he was closely shadowed by TasminPepper and Shaun la Reservee, with theCape’s John Craig Jnr not far behind. With a home track advantage, it is going

to be interesting to see how local hotshotsNian duToit and Jurie Swart Jnr fare in thishard fought one-make category.

While the Midas Sport Duratec FormulaFords are the closest we’re likely to get toFormula 1 at Killarney, their racing atZwartkops was more exciting than in theevents at the Albert Park and in KualaLumpur. The sensation in the first race wasthe performance of rookie driver and formerkarter Julian van der Watt, who went on tobeat Robert Wolk and Matthew Merton.UnfortunatelyVan derWatt’s lack of expe-

rience showed when a typical Highveldthunderstorm at the start of the second racebrought out the wet weather tyres and re-sulted in him dropping well down the order.

Victory thenwent toWolkwhowas followedby reigning champion Nicholas van Weeleyand Dewald Brummer.Other events during the day are going to

feature Crossley and Webb sports and GTcars, Midas Sport Clubman cars and MikeHopkins superbikes. There are also going to be combined

events for the V8 Masters and Makita For-mula Supercars. With the first race due off at 10:10, admis-

sion is R90 for adults and R40 for scholarsunder 16. There is no charge for kids under12. Tickets also available fromComputicket.

Killarney will see some top racing action on Saturday during the second round of the South African main circuit championship.

verloor, maar wel 29-5 met Westering (PE)afgereken. HS Tygerberg, wat duidelikskaaf aan ’n nuwe span, het hom met 12-28
