stukke, is einde verlede jaar uitgereik.

FOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS

Tenants and customers regularly visit-ing one of Eerste River’s oldest shop-ping centres – the Grand Central Shop-

ping Centre – will soon be greeted by abrand new and renovated shopping com-plex.

Sarfaraaz Mukuddem, facilities managerat the centre, told Tygerburger this weekthat the shopping centre is currently under-going a major transformation process thatwill not only add value and employment, but also a much needed upgrade to an al-ready successful centre.

The aim of the renovation, Sarfaraaz said,is to bring back shoppers who may current-ly need to travel out of Eerste River to findcertain goods and services.

“With this development we intend tobring the complete shopping experience tothe community with a significant increasein the store size of Shoprite to over 4 000square metres.

“The first phase is to redesign and extendShoprite and add a food court that will ena-ble a better overall experience for our loyalsupporters and enable shoppers to fulfiltheir needs.

“The development has been planned inphases to ensure as little inconvenience aspossible to our clients,” said Sarfaraaz.

Next phaseHe said the next phase will be a new block

of stores adding 2 500 square metres of newlettable area to the centre with a variety oftenants that will enable shoppers to stay inthe greater Eerste River area, to sit downhave business meetings and a coffee at oneof the restaurants or simply enjoy a mealwith their family.

The developer behind this new develop-

ment, Glenn Hesse, who purchased thebuilding in 2012 has since been making im-provements to the centre and planning therenovation.

“The development team are confidentthat the new extension will provide an en-hanced offering to the public and elevate thecentre to a new level,” Sarfaraaz said.

The project will be completed by the endof June 2015.

Grand plans for Grand CentralThe Grand Central Shopping Centre in Eerste River is currently undergoing a huge upgrade in order to expand and renovate the centre. Theproject will be completed in June 2015.

New parking bays will also be introduced at the upgraded centre.

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department will be completing a zeropressure test on the water supply feeding the Bardale and Silversands water supply zoneon Tuesday 19 August 2014.

This process will result in the disruption of the water supply to Bardale and Silversands from22:00 until 04:00 the following morning.

Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure minimaldisruption to the water supply in the affected areas.

The water supply network across the City is divided into reticulation zones which are smallerand much more manageable sections of the large network for purposes of maintenanceand upgrades. This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Plan and willsignificantly reduce the occurrence of pipe bursts and the subsequent water losses.

Residents are advised to store water in clean sealed containers for domestic use duringthis period.

The City regrets any inconvenience caused.

The Centre for Justice and Crime Preven-tion (CJCP) hosted aWomen’s Day event onSaturday at Wesbank High School. The CJCP regularly works with dysfunc-

tional families and has a Family Preserva-tion Programmeaimed at uplifting the com-munity.Project manager Anthea Davids said the

celebration was to highlight and emphasisethe value and worth of women, and encour-age faith and strength.Approximately 100women, youngandold

from Wesbank and Belhar, participated, said Davids.“The women were inspired by phenome-

nal women like Carlon Vigne, Lee-Ann vanRensburg and Coleen Adams who wentthrough hardships but bore testimony thatthey overcame despite their circumstances.“They encouraged thewomen to continue

the good fight, to take chances, to make adifference and not let their dreams die.

“The day was to appreciate and honourall the things women can do and highlightthe important role they have in the commu-nity,” said Davids. The women were treated to a lovely Eng-

lish breakfast served by boys attendingMa-troosberg Primary School.“The young men came all dressed up to

serve, to assist the women and put somesmiles on the ladies’ faces.“This was done so that thewomen can get

an opportunity to be served for once, some-thing they do so willingly for others andtheir families.”Apampering boothwas also set-up to give

the ladies handmassages and do their nails.Entertainmentwas also provided by local

artists.“The day turned out wonderfully and the

women left smiling.”She thanked all of the volunteers and

Western Cape Minister of Health, TheunsBotha inspected the Kleinvlei CommunityHealth Centre last week following a signifi-cant number of complaints. Most of the complaints related to long

waiting times.Botha visited the health facility with sev-

eral members of the media on Tuesday, 5August.Duringhis visitBotha spokeabout thede-

partment’s plans to upgrade the facility inorder to address challenges. The provincial health department and

City of Cape Town plans to expand and up-grade the health centre at an estimated costof R12,5 million, he said.Structural changes to the current build-

ing will be made to provide for a largernumber of patients, Hélène Rossouw, theminister’s spokesperson, said.“The new extensions will be done in two

phases. The first phase comprises the ex-tension of the pharmacy and will start inJanuary 2015. The second phase is the con-struction of the new women and child unit,as well as a larger sub-waiting area, addi-tional consultation rooms and a store.“The waiting area will also be upgraded

Daar is by verlede week se vergadering

I have been in your fair cityfor just over a year. CapeTown is a rainbow nation – inthis city even the traffic robotsdon’t have colour segregation. No matter the colour – red, yellow or green – all robots aregreen to go through as fast aspossible, even with crossingtraffic.

What also amazes me is thatvehicles don’t seem to have tohave a set of two headlights ortail lights at night, whichseems to be acceptable to thetraffic and police officers, as Ihave even seen a couple ofthese with only one light. Itsometimes gives me theimpression there is a motorcy-cle approaching or I amcoming up to one. So obviouslyyou don’t need a core for avehicle here, even newermodels.

I would just like to reinforceDebora’s letter “Owners shouldkeep dogs on the leash”(TygerBurger, 30 July).

I also walk my dog on theleash on the fields betweenRacecourse Road and St John’sRoad. Almost everyday, I amconfronted with dogs off-leash.Sometimes 4x4s unload asmany as four or five dogs, large and small, and just letthem run.

I would consider this numbera “pack”, which could be verydangerous if they were toattack another dog on a leash.

It is a real danger, not onlyfor dog walkers, but also forpeople walking for enjoyment. The Animal Bylaw of 2010states: “It is illegal to havedogs in a public space or streetunless on a leash or in adesignated area”.

It would be great to have

Unleashed dogs amenace to walkers

this law obeyed. When I ap-proached any of the ownerswho are guilty of disobeying thelaw, I either get a “mind yourown business” or “I’ll just pay afine”. How irresponsible is that?

BARBARADurbanville

It must be a year or two agothat we noticed a recyclingdrive was coming to one of thesuburbs near or next to Bel-lville, but nothing else seems tohave happened since then.

I’m wondering when thisrecycling drive will come to oursuburb.

I understand something likethis costs money to start up,but surely it pays for itself inthe end?

Also, why doesn’t someoneconsider training some of thehomeless people – those whoalready collect recyclablematerial – to collect recyclingprofessionally.

Train them on what can andcannot be recycled and providethem with business skills sothat it can become a full-timejob for them (if they so wish). That way they get off thestreets and back into societyagain, and it helps lower theunemployment rate in ourcountry at the same time.

I hope someone can use thisidea and put it to good use.

AMANDA H. GEARDEmail

LEWENSKIEKIE

With the IFBB South African body-build-ing and fitness championships looming, local athletes will bring their best phy-siques on Saturday to the IFBB WesternProvince championships for a possiblecall up into the Western Province team. The provincial champs will be held at

the CPUT Bellville South campus on Sat-urday and the national championshipsfrom 10-13 September at GrandWest. But for now, the focus is solely on Satur-

day. Registration and weigh-in will againbe held on the Friday night to accommo-date the largenumber of athletes expected, some of whomwill come from as far afieldas George. Some “big” names in the province indi-

cated their participation, but in body-building you only know who will competecome weigh-in time.“If you look at the great number of ath-

letes we had at the SSN Cape Classic andBattle of the Titans II, I am really excitedabout the athleteswe are expecting to com-pete. This is our last show of the year be-fore nationals, and the athletes are alwaysbringing their best physiques to the stagewith thehopeof being in theWesternProv-ince team,” said Western Province chair-man, Kevin Schwartz.Athletes competing will pay R100 if they

are not already affiliated andR150 for divi-sion entry.Weigh-in and registration is from 17:00-

20:00 onFridaynight (15August). Pre-judg-ing starts at 09:00 on Saturday morningwith the main show starting at 18:00.Spectators will pay R100 for pre-judging

The countdown to the Cape’s biggestyouth soccer showcase has begun. There are only seven days left before

the finals of the 2014 Engen Knockout Chal-lenge kick-off.And the 16 u-17 teams who will vie for the

spoils and bragging rights are readyingthemselves to fulfil their dream of beingcrowned Cape Town champions. For thefirst time, the winners will show their mus-cle against the other regional Engen Knock-out Challengewinners at the EngenChampsof Champs in Soweto in October. The Cape Town tournament, of whichPeo-

ple’s Post is the print media sponsor, will beheld at the Stephan Reagan Sports Complexin Westridge, Mitchell’s Plain from Friday22 to Sunday 24August. A total of 48matcheswill be played over the three days.Group A has defending champs Ajax Cape

Town, All Stars Youth Football Develop-ment,HellenicFCandOldMutualAcademy.The Urban Warriors will more than likely

end at the top of the group. Pinelands’ OldMutual will probably end second but willface tough opposition. This group has beenlabelled the dreaded “group of death”.In Group B, last year’s runner’s-up ASD

Cape Town are likely to finish on top butwill bewaryofGrassyPark’sMilanoUnited,Atlantic Nacional and debutants WesternCape Sports School.Hosts Santos FC will look to win Group C,

butwill face stiff competition fromMitchellsPlain’s Liverpool-Portland, Glendene FCand Blue Downs FC.Group D offers the best prospect for min-
