He is going to paint the Grand Canyon.While expressing himself expertly on can-vas, his mind flashes back to 1 January 2005when he was sitting on a rock in Paternos-ter.He paints another line while he sees him-self standing up on the rock and diving into

the dark blue water below.Heiron Joseph from Eric Miles CheshireHome blinks quickly to get the recurringimage out of his head.Under the water was a sandbank andwhen he dove into it he broke the c4 and c5vertebrae in his neck.“The moment I plunged into the water Ijust experienced a numbness, which was al-most like getting cramps, because the wateris really cold along the West Coast,” he re-members.Someone pulled him out the water that fa-

teful day but when a dazed Heiron woke upin hospital he was told he would be paraly-sed from the neck down.Heiron recalls themoment the doctor sha-red the tragic news all too well.“But I can’t even begin to explain how Ifelt,” he tells TygerBurger.“I simply couldn’t comprehend never wal-king again. I wanted the ventilator to stopright there and then.”In hindsight, Heiron believes the accidentwas a blessing.“If I take stock of the last eight years of

my life compared to the 27 years being ablebodied, I realize thatmy accident was a bles-sing in disguise. I have achievedmore, givenbackmore and becomemore appreciative oflife. I was a different person then. Now Iknow I’m here for a purpose. My journey,which is to spread the message that there islife beyond tragedy, has just begun,” saysHeiron determinedly.The shape of the Grand Canyon is begin-ning to take form on the canvas – this willbe his greatest painting to date.

His journey is bursting with oil colours de-picting landscapes, and his story is deliver-ed to distant parts of the world such as Ger-many, Portugal and the United Kingdom.Heiron has sold many paintings since he

took on art as a hobby, and he has sold topeople in all these countries.It comes as no surprise that thisman from

Milnerton is inspiring others while he jour-neys through life.“It took me quite a while to master the

brush while holding it in my mouth. Cont-rol is obviously a difficult thing to achieve,

but serious concentration does the trick.”The Grand Canyon has taken him the bet-

ter part of a month of painting for three tofour days a week. He knows he should takea break when he starts feeling pins andneedles in his arms and legs, caused by thestrain on his neck vertebrae.Every day Heiron seizes as a gift.That day in Paternoster could have been

his last were it not for someone who sawhim dive in and never come up.If he let his misery get the better of him

he would never even have left the hospital.

Instead, he is a shining light of encourage-ment.Heiron’s dream is to paint the seven won-

ders of the world on one canvas, somethinghe says would be a message in itself.What message?He responds quickly: “One of hope.”Heiron has just recently sold his fourth

painting to people living abroad and hasanother client from Australia lined up.

Tensions are running high in the grea-ter Table View area due to an issuedescribed as “extremely sensitive” by

a number of sources.The local Community Police Forum

(CPF) and Table View NeighbourhoodWatch (TVNW) are squaring off against abreakaway faction calling themselves Par-klands Neighbourhood Watch (PNW).

Table View police are, at the time of goingto press, keeping their distance and notcommenting on the matter.

As a result, the question about whetherPNW is legal have to remain unanswered.

The fuss started when TVNW memberand Parklands resident Bjorn Harrison Sa-gar decided that Parklands, Sunningdaleand the new Rivergate suburbs are beingmarginalised by the existing neighbour-hood watch.

These areas fall under Table View policeand TVNW sector 2.

Sagar then established anotherneighbourhood watch, allegedly withoutthe necessary permission from the police orthe CPF.

According to him just under 50% of theactive Parklands members of TVNW follo-wed him to PNW. That means there have re-cently been two neighbourhood watches pa-trolling the streets of sector 2 – one not re-cognised by the other.

Rumours about “heavy-handedness” ofPNWmembers and them“doing the police’sjob” have been doing the rounds, but Sagarsays these are completely false.

“Bring these guilty parties forward. The-re are none. We are strongly opposed to thisway of doing things,” he insists.

“When opening this watch we have actedwithin our constitutional rights. We are notdoing anything illegal.”

According to him he has had numeroushigh level meetings with various authori-

ties in the recent past and he is confidentPNW will be allowed to operate.

Sagar reckons people should see the “big-ger picture”, as he explains: “We are all he-re for crimeprevention.Wewant to help thecommunity and we should all work toge-ther. Claremont has four neighbourhoodwatches. Bothasig has one.Edgemead has one. Whycan’t Parklands also haveone?”

CPF chairperson AndrewBrace insists that PNW isnot being recognised by theCPF or the police.

Brace adds: “In MitchellsPlain there were eightneighbourhood watches,but most were closed downby provincial commissio-ner Arno Lamoer becauseof a lack of coordination.The more watches there arethe harder it becomes to co-ordinate matters. The CPFis made up of many forums and we have tomake it work. We and the TVNW form partof one of the biggest success stories in theprovince. Quite frankly, Sagar doesn’t wantto work in these structures.”

TVNW’s Ryno Roberts also reckons PNWis illegal.

“Why interfere with something thatworks? Yes, according to us they are illegal,but that isn’t our decision. We would preferto stay out of it. This creates confusion inthe neighbourhoods,” he says.

Table View station commander Dirk Vos-loo has indicated that he will release a state-ment on Thursday or Friday to clarify thematter.

One of the reasons mooted for the opposi-tion towards PNW is that the policewouldn’t want to sit in even more meetings.

Sagar responds by saying everyoneshould meet during the CPF meetings, sothere would be no extra meeings.

“Why is there a satellite police station inParklands?” asks Sagar before answering:“Parklands needs focussed micro-manage-ment. People call us vigilantes and saywe’re illegal, but they should sit down, takea breath, and really think about it.”

Brace responds by saying that there is in-deed a neighbourhoodwatch operating in Par-klands – TVNW sector 2.

“There are three sectorsin the greater Table Viewarea and each has its ownwatch. TVNW sector 1,TVNW sector 2 and TVNWsector 3.”

Spokesperson for the lo-cal CPF, Gemma Rede-lingshuys, weighs in: “Ac-cording to South AfricanPolice Service Act, Act 68of 1995, the police shall, inorder to achieve the ob-jects contemplated in Sec-tion 215 of the Constituti-

on, liaise with the community through theCPF. No structure is able to exist in TableView without being registered through thelocal CPF and the local police. Ultimatelythe CPF is responsible for the whole com-munity. At this point in time, there is no actin place allowing the Department of Com-munity Safety to grant a neighbourhoodwatch structure legal grounds to exist wit-hin a community. In a community with analready well-established neighbourhoodwatchwith strong ties to the community, lo-cal authorities and armed response, a se-condneighbourhoodwatch is nonsensical.”

During multiple interviews with invol-ved parties (not all of them quoted above),a lot was said off the record. The residents,who are unwittingly caught in the confusi-on, needs this to be resolved as soon as pos-sible.

“We live in a country where there is moregood than bad, so let’s give a little back.”

So says self-proclaimed optimist fromMelkbosstrand, Joe-Anne Kerr (42).

She practises what she preaches, helpingto feed 46 children between the ages of threeand seven-years-old from Monday to Fri-day.

The children who go to ACVV Koeberg’spre-school now eat rice, pasta and soupfrom Monday to Thursday and on Fridaythey get treated with a full meal, yoghurt,fruit and juice.

Kerr has managed to get Argon SupplyChains Solutions on board, who have gladlycommitted to being a sponsor for the Fridaymeals.

Unfortunately, getting sponsors for theMonday to Thursday meals is proving moredifficult.

Says Kerr: “We depend on the Melkbos-strand community, but donations are very

slim. We need about R625 per day to feed thechildren and we get nowhere near that.”

The result is that Kerr covers the short-fall from her own pocket.

She has now reached out to the communi-ty via TygerBurger and hopes somethinggood will come from it.

“As long as I just keep doing good,” shesays.

Kerr first saw an ACVV advertisement inJanuary asking for donations, and immedi-ately knew she could help.

The idea that the children would eat rice,pasta and soup every day was unacceptableto her so she started the “Friday meal” idea.

. Meanwhile, the children of ACVV, withthe help of Kerr and Driftwood Café, enjoy-ed a fabulous Easter recently when theyhunted for eggs and frolicked on jumpingcastles and waterslides.

The waterslide was sponsored by Drif-twood Café’s owner, Philip “Kids wanna ha-ve fun!” Smith.

A community awareness campaign in theform of health, wellness and safety talks or-ganised by Leah Simmons, was launched atthe Table View Pick n Pay in March this ye-ar.

On 3 April the second series of discussionstook place – not only at the Pick’n Pay butalso at the Milnerton library.

From 13 May this campaign will continue,with discussions held every second Tuesdayof the month at 10:00 at the Milnerton libraryonly.

The discussions will be hosted by Helen leRoux of Community Intervention Centre(our local crisis and trauma support organi-sation) and Cpt André Fourie of MilnertonPolice.

The meetings will touch on a range of safe-ty issues, such as basic safety awareness inand around the home, ATM fraud, self-defen-ce, and health and wellness issues, withguest speakers from in and around the com-munity.

Johnny is reeds 42 jaar ’n tatoeëerkun-stenaar en ’n kultusfiguur onder die lief-hebbers van velkuns. Mense kom van alleuithoeke van die stad, maar ook uit dieplatteland om tatoes te kry.

“Ek het een jaar ’n tattoo machine in diehande gekry,” sê Johnny in sy kenmerken-de sagte stem. “Ek het toe saam met Jim-my Adams begin werk en my skills ge-slyp.”

Jimmy Adams was die eerste bekendetatoeëer-kunstenaar in Kaapstad.

Hy sê die regte groot aanvraag na tatoe-eermerke het in die negentigs begin. “ToeMandela vrygelaat is, het mense se denkemeer vry geword. ’n Mens kan amper sêhulle het uit die kas geklim. Deesdae is ditamper soos seisoene, eers was dit die Ja-pannese letters, toe feetjies. Vandag is ditmeer persoonlike tatoeëermerke waarnamense soek.”

Despite a few “teething problems”, theMyCiTi service is on track, with ne-arly a million passengers using the

service per month.Brett Herron, city mayoral committee

member for transport, says overall 972 343passenger journeys were recorded on theMyCiTi bus service in March.“This figure includes the passenger jour-

neys on the new routes toHoutBay andDu-noon.”This increase bodes well for the future of

the service, but behind the scenes, variousobstacles still need to be overcome.In March the city cancelled the R234 mil-

lion contract with Lumen Technologies,who were responsible for the control cen-tre.The contract included the scheduling

and monitoring of the MyCiTi bus operati-ons.

NonperformanceDeputy mayor Ian Neilson said at the ti-

me that the seven-year contract had beencancelled due to “non-performance”.The reasons for termination is not stan-

ding in the way of Lumen threatening thecitywith legal action that could potentiallycost the city R50 million in compensation.Subcontractor Shaun Patterson from

Questek claims Lumen also owes themR10million for work done on the MyCiTi con-tract.Patterson cast some light on the cancella-

tion of the contract when he said Lumenwereunable to renew theR5million perfor-mance bond required by the city when theproject ran late, and was therefore in bre-ach of contract.Herron says the cancellation means

“certain functionality, such as real-timepassenger information displays on the pas-senger information boards at the stationsand on the mobi-site have been affected”.However, the city has still managed to im-plement theMyCiTi service to Dunoon andAtlantis. A new contractor should be inplace by June.On the teething problems experienced so

far, Herron said some media platforms ha-ve focused on the opinions of a small per-centage of unhappy commuters.

Worldwide reality“When viewed in context against passen-

ger numbers, complaints represent lessthan 1% of the total passenger journeys re-corded,” he said.Herron maintained: “The phenomenal

uptake of the MyCiTi service over the pastfew months confirms residents’ need for asafe, reliable and affordable public trans-port system.”Herron said that the city launched the

MyCiTi route linking Imizamo Yethu,Hangberg and Hout Bay with the city cen-tre on 16 February.On 1 March the City extended the main

route (T01) to Dunoon and have already in-creased the number of buses on the routedue to demand.On 5 July MyCiTi will be launched in

Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha.

Most people would have given up a long ti-me ago, but as writer GK Chesterton oncesaid: “You cannot love a thing withoutwanting to fight for it.”Deborah Boyes loves helping people and

she will defiantly shake her fist at the tem-pest enveloping her.Her non-profit organisation (NPO), Boy-

es Helping Hands, is on the brink of closu-re.“We are so close to shutting our doors

and I don’t want to see this happen. My he-art is breaking,” says Deborah.She had to fight an ardous battlewith the

South African Revenue Service to get per-mission to run a charity shop, and was fi-nally victorious when the it opened in a lo-cal centre last year.Unfortunately the shop, which was the

primary source of funding for the NPO,had to close down a month ago.Now the NPO has had to stop feeding

about 200 destitute people and 13 needy fa-milies a month because they have no inco-me.“It has been devastating to us, and if we

cannot find a premises to operate from ve-ry soon, we will need to close our doors,”she continues.It is ironic that the very despondencyDe-

borah is feeling now was one of her maindriving factors for starting the organisati-on.In November 2012 TygerBurger reported

in the article entitled “Giving back joy af-ter hard life” that Deborah’s own “experi-ence of hopelessness has driven her to dowhatever she can to help the plight of thosewhose futures look equally bleak as hersonce did.”The article reads: “Her birth to a teenage

mother who didn’t want her was followedby a loveless childhood, an abusive relati-onship, losing custody of her daughter andeventually being on the street. A chance vi-sit to a church led to someone taking herin. The compassion she experienced hereis something she now wishes to extend toothers.”Now Deborah has to plead for another

act of compassion.And standing behind her are 200 home-

less people, 13 families and pupils at theParkview Primary school in Atlantis, whohave directly benefitted from the NPO.The pupils of this school have been hel-

ped with the provision of food, school clo-thing, sporting equipment and the provisi-on of a high school education.She concludes: “I dedicated my entire

self to building up the NPO so that it couldbe a hope and a help for those in need, be-cause I have been there myself, I knowwhat it is like to be out on the streets, tohave nowhere to go, and to have nothingto eat. One of the Cape’s most renowned andglamorous bridal shows, the FAB Bri-dal Expo, is taking place at the Grand-West Market Hall this weekend.

Taking place on 10 and 11 May, FABBridal Expo offers those who are plan-ning their wedding (or looking forsomthing extraordinary for their spe-cial or corporate event, or birthdayparty) access to everything they needfor their special day.

FAB brings service providers andproducts from across the Cape toge-ther under one roof and puts visitorsin touch with the various experts theyneed in order to plan their wedding,or host a successful event.

Sy sê ’n tweepersoon-stuk soos Vir Ewigen Altyd het groot uitdagings, omdat jy nooitvan die verhoog af is nie. “Die akteurs moetbaie fyn ingestel wees op mekaar. Jy kan nievir ’n oomblik konsentrasie verloor nie. MetMarius is dit maklik. Hy’s iemand wat ekvertrou. Ons ken mekaar goed en het al so-veel verskillende verhoudings teenoor me-kaar gespeel. Ons hoef mekaar nie van vooraf te leer ken nie. Dit is wonderlik om weersaam met hom op die verhoog te wees,” sêsy

Die kwelpunte wat in dié stuk uitmekaargehaal word, gaan hoofsaaklik oor genade-dood. Sandra se karakter hoor sy is termi-naal siek en sy vra haar man (Marius) omhaar te help sterf. Die stuk speel hom mees–tal af waar hulle as ’t ware wag dat sy moetdoodgaan. Sandra bring die grootste deelvan die toneelstuk deur in ’n bed – haar sterf-bed – en het net haar stem om mee te “speel”.

“Ja, die storie is hartseer,” vertel sy,“maar daar is ook baie komedie, en konfron-tasie. Dis beslis nie net ’n gekerm in ’n bednie!”

Sandra sê die rol was vir haar moeilik,veral die voorbereiding.

“Voordat ek die rol kon verstaan, moes eksoos my karakter ook vir alles totsiens konsê. Een aand het dit my heeltemal oorval. Ekwas so ontsteld, want ek moes alles kon groeten dan weer op ’n punt van vrede kom.

“’n Mens kan jou amper nie daarin indink

nie om ’n keuse vir genadedood te maak.Mense hoop maar altyd op ’n wonderwerk,vir ’n uitkomkans,” mymer sy.

Vir Ewig en Altyd het staande ovasies bydie KKNK, waar dit geopen het, gekry.

“Dis altyd fantasties as mense opstaan. Byhierdie stuk het baie mense ook agternalank bly sit. Hulle was diep geraak. Genade-dood is ’n onderwerp wat in almal se onder-bewussyn broei. Ons wonder of ons dit be-hoort te doen, of dit wettig moet wees.”

Self glo sy ’n mens behoort die keuse te hêtot genadedood. “As ek dit vir my honde, watek die liefste op aarde het, kan doen, behoortons tog ook die keuse te hê.”

Sandra sê mense moet die stuk gaan sien.“Dit vra ernstige vrae en is ’n baie delikate,

baie mooi stuk en is toeganklik – ’n menshoef nie uit te figure wat aangaan nie.”

En waarmee is Sandra Prinsloo nog besigas sy nie op die verhoog is nie? “Ek’s baieselde nié op die verhoog nie!” lag sy. Tansspeel sy ook in Oskar en die pienk tannie,Wie’s bang vir Virginia Woolf? en Die Naai-masjien. Tussendeur werk sy bietjie in dietuin, gaan stap met die honde, gesels metvriende, lees, “maar dit gebeur maar min!”.Sy beplan om in Junie in Italië te toer en la-ter vanjaar in Rusland. Sy bly in Kalkbaai.

Cape cyclists ready for SA champsA strong Western Cape track cycling team is ready for the national championships in Durban.

Provincial colours were recently awar-ded to the Western Cape track cyclingteam ahead of the South African Track

and Para-Cycling Championships takingplace in Durban from 29 April to 3 May.

These cyclists will compete in the teamevents against the other participating pro-vinces.

TheWestern Cape has an active track pro-gram and the team was selected based onperformances at the Western Cape champi-onships and trails held at the Bellville Velo-drome.

This is the first time that a Western Capeteam has been selected as previously, Capeteams were split into Boland, WP, West Co-ast and South Western Districts.

The Western Cape has a very strong teamthis yearwith athletes such asnational teamriders Jeanne Smith and Kyle Borchjesspearheading the men’s elite team. Both Ja-co Scholtz and PeterWheeler, who represen-tedSouthAfrica at theMastersWorldCham-pionships in Manchester, will be riding inthe master’s team.

The full team ranges from u-16 to masters

and also includes a strong ladies sectopm.Elite national track cyclist Maroesjka Mat-thee will spearhead the ladies team. She isjoined by Bronwyn Abrahams, Debbie-Lof-fell Dawson and Myrtle Hagedoorn to com-plete the ladies team.

wers reach their peak at 28, Rocco, at the ageof 21, has so much scope and time to achievegreatness that the sky is the limit for this ta-lented youngster.For now, competing in the 19thAfrica Seni-

Morocco for Rocco“I am really looking forward to competing

in Morocco. If I can do well there, I have achance of being selected to compete in the In-tercontinental Cup amonth later, which is al-so in Morocco.“If I can accomplish that, it will be a huge

Niggling injuries“As with any sport I struggle with one or

two niggling injuries but it’s nothing seri-ous. I do a lot of gymwork, especially in theoff-season, and when I prepare for competi-tion my preparation involves a lot of run-ning, work on the medicine ball and lightgym work.”His goals for the future are set - to travel
