This paypoint service was made available to all social grant beneficiaries in April last year, by means of their Sassa cards, which means they avoid standing in long queues for hours at Sassa paypoints each month. During December several pensioners in the Brackenfell/Kraaifontein area were charged additional fees ranging in amount between R2 and R10, when withdrawing their pensions at Pick n Pay in Cape Gate. According to statistical reports for 2013, 2.8 million people receive social grants in the Western Cape alone. Of this, 258 759 are old age grants. Investigation “This is the first time a fee was charged, before it was free. “And why was the fee not the same across the board? Pick n Pay had a notice up that all Sassa transactions were free and now they are charging!” said one of the pension- ers* TygerBurger spoke to. When this particular pensioner contacted the Sassa call centre, she was advised by a consultant that the matter was under inves- tigation. On enquiry, Jonathan Ackerman, direc- tor of customer services at Pick n Pay, con- firmed that the store does not charge any fee for the withdrawal of Sassa grant payments. “We have consulted with Sassa and it ap- pears that some Sassa transactions may have incurred transaction fees... Pick n Pay considers the payment of social grants as a service to our communities and does not profit from it at all,” he told TygerBurger. He referred customers who found they have been charged a transaction fee to the Sassa call centre. Shivani Wahab, spokesperson for Sassa al- so confirmed that there should be no trans- action fees charged when beneficiaries ac- cess their social grants via approved mer- chants such as Pick n Pay. “Transaction fees apply only in the case of ATM withdrawals, where standard ATM rates apply,” she said. “We will have to take the matter up with CPS (Cash Paymaster Services) who is con- tracted to Sassa for the payment of social grants, for further investigation.” Refunds It is not certain yet what the outcome of this investigation is, but TygerBurger could establish that no additional deductions were made from the pensioners in question dur- ing January. The deductions made in December howev- er, were not refunded, according to one of the pensioners. “According to a Sassa consultant the mon- ey is still on my account but the Pick n Pay system shows nothing,” she complained on Monday. CPS is a business unit of global company NET1, who provides payment solutions and transaction processing services across sev- eral industries. It is further stated that the company de- rives up to 66 % of its revenue from its social welfare grant distribution business. Threeonlinescams tobeware ofAfter the holiday season is the perfect timefor scammers to be out in full force, as eve-ryone is strapped for cash. The most recent scam was one run on

Facebook, offering free gift cards fromWoolworths and Pick n Pay.Dial aNerd, a local ITmanagement servi-

ce provider, have listed three of the biggestscams, which will help you stay ahead ofthe scammers and allow you to enjoy youronline experience with peace of mind. The easiest way to be targeted is via an

email, text or Facebook post, offering a gre-at deal. “Generally, don’t click on a linkfrom someone you don’t know as it couldbe spyware or a malicious program desig-ned to capture passwords and other perso-nal information,” warns Leaine Brebber, head of communications at Dial a Nerd.If you didn’t remember entering a com-

petition or ordering a package, it is proba-bly a scam. If the deal is too amazing to betrue, it’s probably a scam. Such as the “Geta Free R500 Woolworths or Pick n Pay GiftCard by sharing the link on your Facebookpage” scam.“Always check the source of the link –

even if it’s from someone you know. Ascammer could have hijacked their ac-count and sent it on their behalf,” she says.Phony gift card offers come in the form

of an email, text message or Facebook postsaying that you’ve won a prize or thatyou’ve qualified for a massive discount orsum of money on a gift card. You are thenrequired to enter extensive personal infor-mation in order to receive it or share thelink to your friends.“Don’t do it! The more personal informa-

tion they have, the easier it will be to getinto your bank account, for example.“Ignore links offering ridiculous dis-

counts and steer clear of sites that offer giftcards at unheard of prices,” she continues.“About unknown sites advertising unbe-

lievable offers: You know the saying, “if itsounds too good to be true, it probably is”?This is the general rule when it comes toscams.”Some sites do offer amazing deals, like

Groupon and Superbalist (Citymob), butit’s the unknown sites that you need towatch out for. The ones with strangelyspelt names or the ones offering highlysought after items like iPads and iPhonesat abnormally low prices.Be very wary when entering your credit

card details onto unknown sites and makesure that the site is secure: The web ad-dress should begin with https:// instead ofhttp://. The “s”means that it is secure. “Werecommend using a separate card for onli-ne purchases and setting your limits as lowas possible, so that if your details are sto-len, the damage will be minimal. It’s alsoadvisable not to save any of your creditcard details on a site for future purchases,”Leaine advises.Dubious websites can also pull you in by

offering vouchers for popular gifts. If youhave to enter a lot of personal informationto get the voucher, the warning bells in yo-ur head should start to sound. If you are required to sign up to the ac-

count to purchase, using a password youhaven’t used for anything else, is a goodidea.

V If you think you’ve been involved in anonline scam, immediately run a virus scan.Mobile phones and tablets aren’t immuneto scamware, so this applies to all devices.“We recommend using ESET NOD32 fordesktop and mobile security.”

V Change your password if you think youhave been scammed on a social media site.

V Call your credit card company rightaway – they will put a watch on your cardfor suspicious activity.“To recap, stick to the well-known sites,

don’t click on any links from unfamiliarsources and don’t be tricked into giving upextensive personal information to get agood dea,” Leaine concludes.

The language policy regarding official docu-mentation at a primary school in Kraaifon-tein has left several parents in the dark, lit-erally.According to one of these Xhosa-speaking

parents, who wishes to remain anonymous,Watsonia Primary School in Scottsdene, is-sues all its circular letters to parents exclu-sively in Afrikaans.“Even the stationery lists were in Afri-

kaans only and we had to ask friendly shop-pers at the stationery shop to translate thelist for us,” this father said.He says he has requested the principal on

several occasions to send out letters in bothAfrikaans and English, all to no avail.“It’s frustrating, not to mention grossly

unfair, for us as parents who wish to be ac-tively involved in our child’s school career,”he says.BronaghCasey, spokesperson forWestern

Cape Minister of Education, confirmed thatWatsonia Primary is a parallel mediumschool, which means that they have classesin both Afrikaans and English.“The policy of the Western Cape Educa-

tion Department is to provide official docu-ments in the three official languages of theprovince, English, Afrikaans and Xhosa.Weencourage schools to do the same for the lan-guages used by the school,” she said addingthat even though there may be practical dif-ficulties in doing so, these are not insur-mountable.“The school community should be able to

resolve this issue internally, through dueprocess, where our local circuit teamwill fa-cilitate, as required,” she said.On further enquiry the school declined to

offer the TygerBurger an interview or anycomment.

Almost all pirated copies of the film,Mandela: Long Walk To Freedomwhich have been circulating in SouthAfrica do not have the complete film.

This is according to the South Afri-can Federation against CopyrightTheft (SAFACT) who discoveredwhen watching a pirated copy thatthe DVD starts with the first 15 min-utes of the film, but thereafter contin-ues with the film, Invictus which wasreleased four years ago.

The pirates have used the same cin-ema poster artwork of the film Man-dela: LongWalk To Freedom as the in-lay/cover for their pirated discs tomake it appear legitimate.

The film was released on 28 Novem-ber 2013 at cinemas in South Africaand has subsequently been releasedin the United Kingdom, the UnitedStates, Canada, France, Holland, Por-tugal, Israel, Iceland, Switzerland,Belgium and the Middle East.

Germany, Finland, Norway, Spain,Denmark, New Zealand and Indiawill release the film later this month.

The film is not legally available ina DVD format anywhere in the worldand the pirates are defrauding thepublic.

Producer, Anant Singh, says: “Wehave taken every possible measure toensure that Mandela: Long Walk toFreedom is not pirated. It is extremelydisappointing that the film is beingtargeted by pirates who are passingoff their fake DVDs as the completefilm. We urge the public not to sup-port pirates by buying the fakeDVDs.”

In a press release, SAFACT statedthat piracy kills jobs, opportunitiesand sustainable income for honestworkers.

The CEO of SAFACT, Corne Gul-denpfennig has warned pirates thatSAFACT is vigilant in the enforce-ment in cinema theatres and on thestreets throughout the country. Shealso warned criminals that criminalactions will be taken against all per-petrators whether for fraud and/orunder the copyright legislation.V Crime Line: SMS 32211 or Crime Stop 0860010 111 and online at [email protected].

vrae gevra:TB: Ons lesers kon enige Suid-Afrikaanse

Hoe voel jy daar-oor?

GS: Dit is nog altyd vir my ’n groot voorregwanneer mense my as kunstenaar en mymusiek ondersteun en ek sal altyd grootwaardering daarvoor hê.

waarin ’n nuwe kunstenaar bekend gestelword.

GS: Elke oomblik van my loopbaan is virmy ’n hoogtepunt. “Let’s hand over stupid Joline, the16-year-old that was was bitten, toAtlantis Animal Pound, to get her

out of her misery! Joline, you have won theaward of the month! For stupidity, sorry, there is no cure! You should be where Milois!”

This Facebook comment, made by Belin-da Ruth Berry, is one of many made by sup-porters of Milo, a dog that was impoundedby the Atlantis Animal Pound for bitingand permanently damaging a child’s hand.

The child, Joline Janse van Rensburg, was visiting a friend’s house and whilewaiting outside the gate, their dog bit herhand from the inside of the palisade fence.

Joline’s father, Rudolf, who was waitingin his car, jumped out while he and Joline’sfriend screamed at the dog, a labrador andDalmation cross, who then let go of herhand.

Stitches“Joline did not make a sound. She just

turned to me, white as a ghost and said ‘lookwhat the dog did.’ Her hand was bleedingprofusely,” Rudolf says. He took her to theemergency unit at N1 City immediately, where she received 27 stitches.

This happened almost three months ago,but Joline is still in shock. Not only couldshe not write her Gr 11 final exam, the inju-ry has also left her with an ugly scar. Jolinelost feeling in part of her right hand ... aswell as all her friends.

Joline has become a victim in a Facebookcampaign to release Milo. In very littletime, Milo has gained the support of closeto 4 400 animal activists worldwide onwww.causes.com website, after the ownermade a plea to release him.

Unbridled insults against the Janse vanRensburg family were rife and on anotherpublic Facebook page of Kruvet AnimalHealth, owner of Milo, Sharné Jordaan, said “Ek sal daai etters sue wat my ‘kind’wegneem”.

She also posted the cellphone number ofthe law enforcement officer in charge of theimpoundment unit, email addresses ofHelen Zille and promised to get the cell-phone number of Joline’s father so that peo-ple can direct their anger to them in personin order to release Milo.

TraumaOn 17 December, someone posted this

comment: “This 16-year-old girl must bepunished for causing poor Milo all the trau-ma & suffering! If it wasn’t for her irrespon-sible actions this would never have hap-pened!”

The Janse van Rensburg family did notrespond to any of these comments, but fol-lowed the Save Milo campaign on social me-dia and made copies of everything. In theprocess they came across two other peoplewho have been bitten by Milo in the pastand comments made by Jordaan on several

occasions prior to this incident, asking ad-vice about her dog’s aggressive behaviour.

Angie Janse van Rensburg, Jolines’mother, says they do not want to make a de-cision about the life of the dog. “The lawmust take its course, but the fact is ourchild is innocent. She is the one who got bit-ten here. We did not want to do it the mediaway, we rely on what’s right. If I take partin this debate on social media, people willattack me.”

The campaign has also taken a politicalturn: “We are starting a twitter storm tohelp save Milo. If you are on twitter pleasetweet @helenzille to send Milo home andget your followers to retweet,” one of the or-ganisers of the campaign posted on the“Causes” website. Several people threat-ened not to vote DA if Milo was not released.

On 13 January, Milo was released and re-turned to his owner.

“The matter was first brought to my at-tention during middle December. By thetime it was submitted to me there had al-ready been a lot of water under the bridgeand a fair amount of tension had arisen ascertain comments had been made on socialmedia about the injured girl,” says RichardBosman, head of safety and security for theCity of Cape Town, who ordered Milo’s re-lease.

He says he opened communication withboth parties in the decision-making proc-ess.

Litigation“Despite all the raised emotions and the

possibility of civil as well as criminal litiga-tion, my sole focus was to consider the re-quest by the owner of the dog to not haveit destroyed. Representations in this regardwere made to me by Ms Jordaan’s attor-neys, which I provided to the complainant’sfather to get his view. He indicated in anemail that this was not his business andthat the decision was mine to make,” Bos-man says. He added that Jordaan had com-plied with the request to fence in the prop-erty properly and to have the bell, whichwas on the inside of the fence, moved.

Schools in the northern district of the north-ern suburbs (Brackenfell, Kraaifontein,Durbanville and Bellville North) escapedthe bulk of vandalism during the past De-cemberholidays,withonly threeminor inci-dents reported. The remainder of the city and province

suffered 38 reported cases of burglary andvandalism, of which four were major.Damages at this stage amounts to half a

million rand, with the final costs still to bedetermined.“I find it very disturbing that people are

prepared to damage a school classroom orsteal resources that are meant to teachyoung learners. The R500 000 spent on re-

pairs and replacement of equipment couldhave been spent on textbooks and readers,or on new technology,” Minister of Educa-tion in the Western Cape, Donald Grant re-sponded on Friday. The Cape Winelands District had 11 re-

ported cases, followed by Metro East (KuilsRiver, Bellville South and Elsies River area)with eight and Metro South (southern sub-urbs)with five cases. TheWestCoast districtreported only one case. The worst case reported, according to

Grant was at Joe Slovo Secondary in Khay-elitsha,where thedamage to two science lab-oratories and several classrooms was exten-sive.Grant says that ofmost of the cases report-

ed over the holiday period, copper pipingand electrical cabling seem to be the main

target. In five of the cases, computer equipment

was stolen.Inmost cases, these schools had alarmsys-

tems. And in others, 24-hour security.“Whilewe can try to safeguardour schools

with additional security measures, we can-not win the fight against school burglaryand vandalism without community supportas schools, given their extensive physical in-frastructure, are difficult areas to secure.”On enquiry the department declined to

identify the names of the three schools van-dalised in the northern district due to rea-sons of security.“Inmanycases, thedamages causedby the

perpetrators can result in a security threator breach,” said Grant’s spokesperson,Bronagh Casey.

Afresh year means new technology tolook forward to in 2014. The annual In-ternational Consumer Electronics

Show (CES) was held in Las Vegas earlierthis month and provided great insight intowhat to expect, technology-wise, this year. Some productsmight, however, not be avail-able in South Africa for a while. Some predictions for this year on the tech-

nology front, were explained in a media re-lease from Dial a Nerd, a local IT manage-ment service provider.Micropayment applications, they say,

which will allow a variety of payment solu-tions to talk to each other so that physicalmoney doesn’t need to change hands is saidto expand in South Africa this year.Developments in television, physical ones

as well as in telecommunications, are beingspoken about. It looks like Vodacomwill for-mally bid to buy Neotel and a deal betweenTelkom and MTN should be finalised thisyear. Although, a Telkom Mobile, MTN ar-rangement could be more complicated thana Vodacom and Neotel one.

3D printingOther trends include 3D printing, which

will eventually allow users to print out 3Dobjects such as shoes, accessories and toysfrom home. It sounds a bit sci-fi, as NASAhas sent these printers to space in order toreplaceminor parts (which is far easier thanhaving the parts shipped there), but appar-ently 3D printers have been around for 25years, and now due to technological im-provements and reduced costs they are be-coming more popular.“3D printers will be in your house like re-

frigerators, TVs and microwaves,” musicstar will.i.am said at the event. AndrewBog-geri, owner of a Las Vegas company called

Full Spectrum Laser, mentioned a study in-dicating that the average US home couldsave up to $2 000 (about R21 700) annually,by printing, instead of replacing a numberof the 27 commonly broken household items.According to Dial a Nerd, the biggest buzz

at the consumer electronics show seemed tobe around wearable technology.

Put it on youWearable tech can be broken down into

three categories: glasses, notifiers and track-ers. Most of us know about Google Glass bynow: a wearable computer in the form of apair of glasses. The glasses are expected togo on sale some time this year for about $500(about R5 400) and experts are predictingthat fourmillion “smartglasses”will be sold. These amazing glasses are even said to

transform the way surgery is performed asdoctors are now using them in the operatingroom. The optical head mounted display al-lows the surgeon to keep his eyes on the pa-tient at all times and the microphone giveshim the ability to communicate with thoseoutside of the operating room, such as thepatient’s friends and family.Notifiers are deviceswhich give you infor-

mation from the world around you, such assmartwatches and wristbands that are ableto receive text messages, phone calls, socialmedia mentions as well as provide othercommunication and interactive features, compatible with Android and iOS.Trackers use sensors to record data such

as heart rate, exercise, calories, visuals andmuch more, via fitness wristbands and life-logging cameras. The products are connected to the internet

and thedata can thenbedownloadedonyoursmartphone.V Visit www.dialanerd.co.za for more information.

In order to support rape victims, Run/Walk For Life, Tygerberg, has teamed upwith the Jes Foord Foundation in a “Do-nate a Handbag” campaign.Anybody can donate a handbag, new or

used, with items like soap, deodorant, achocolate or soft toy inside. The Jes Foord Foundation opened its

doors in 2009 in KwaZulu-Natal, followingthe brutal gang rape of Jes Foord by fourmen.Jes’s aim was to start an organisation

that would improve the compassionatetreatment of rape survivors at each stepin the process, to restore lives after rapeand to educate people about the realities

of rape in South Africa. The Foundation does this by offering

free ongoing counselling to rape survi-vors, founding Rape Crisis Care Centreswhere victims receive medical treatmentand trauma counselling free of charge. Inaddition, they provide motivational talksto schools, corporates and more.“The Handbag Project gives handbags

full of much-needed supplies to rape vic-tims at a critical point in their journey tobecoming a survivor. Rape survivors aretold not to shower or clean after a rape, astheir body is a crime scene and cleaningwill wash away the evidence,” saysMagdavan Zyl, manager of the Tygerberg Run/

Walk for Life.“After hours of remaining in this condi-

tion, through the medical exam and thegiving of a police statement, the first thinga survivor will say she needs is to bath,to feel clean,” she says. The handbags will be filled with person-

al supplies like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion that not only helpsthe survivor to feel clean again, but helpsher feel special and restores her dignity. It is the first step in claiming back herbody and her life.”V Send Magda at Run for Life Tygerberg an emailat [email protected] if you would liketo donate a handbag for this ongoing initiative.

Everywhere one drives inBrackenfell you see hugegardens on the sidewalks.

People walking their dogs orjust going for a family walkhave to walk in the roadbecause there is no space onthe sidewalk to walk. In somecases the sidewalk gardens areso overgrown that one cannoteven see traffic around acorner.

I can’t see oncoming trafficwhen I reverse out of mydriveway because my next doorneighbour has a sidewalkgarden, and when he has hissprinklers on to water hissidewalk garden my car getsabsolutely filthy from the finespray. Speaking to him hasamount to nothing.

Apparently, although thesidewalk belongs to the munici-pality it is the responsibility ofthe owner of the propertybehind the sidewalk to main-tain it. Surely the municipalityhas rules about what is allowedto be planted? Sidewalk garde-ners should be fined.

Do you reportcrime so that the police statis-tics can reflect a true version ofcrime in your precinct, do youattend police community events, meetings or heed police crimeprevention hints?

SLICE OF LIFE

Jingle bellsand happyValentine’sJust when the paying populace aresighing a collective, “ah, thank goodnessit’s finally over!”, the board of sillyseason social sentimentalist marketersstarts milking the (mostly empty) walletswith truck-loads of hearts.

Yes, you guessed it. The momentMariah Carey’s (or Boney M’s) Yuletidemelodies died down, they had the ware-houses aerated for last year’s back toschool placard specials.

Change a price here, tweak a picturethere, et voila, the retail managers canstart compiling their monthly storetargets like clockwork – in perfect time tothe last coin falling from the SouthAfrican’s overworked purse.

We buy into the marketing every year. Those placards are irresistible – thehappy children in their crisp whites andshiny shoes really get the sentimentaljuices flowing. And they know exactlyhow to do it: they make us feel guilty.

What parent in their right mind doesnot want to get their child the latest, most expensive turn-up crayons (evenwhen normal ones would do the job)?

Then, when the last cents are spent –with a tear and a deep, deep sigh – theyrelease the angels and heart placards andbooklets, pamphlets and displays. So, ifby Valentine’s Day we’ve not learnt thelesson of “less is more”, they makecertain we smell the cinnamon goodnessof hot cross buns baking – a whole monthbefore Easter. So, dear reader, be sure tostock up on the chocolate eggs – theyknow we love our mothers too.

A tale of love and the ocean wide

Emilio and Justina de Sousa from Welgelegen, who have been married for 70 years.PHOTO: MAGRIET THERON

MAGRIET THERON@magrietron

“I am on my nerves,” says Emilio de Sousa, who has been a fearless skipper for 61 years. He is a healthy man, but the interview hashim trembling. “What do you want to talkabout?”Emilio (93) and Justina de Sousa (89) were

married in Lisbon, Portugal on 26 December1943. Today, they are still holding hands onthe couch of their daughter Maria Wilson’shouse in Welgelegen, where they stay.On 26 December 2013, they had been mar-

ried for 70 years. They celebrated it at aBlou-bergstrand restaurant overlooking the seawith 15 family members: children, grand-children and great-grandchildren.

“I come from a small village north of Lis-bon. When I was 17, my father fell ill and wehad tomove to the city. Thenext thing I know,we were living next to ’Tina. She was 13 then, and we started looking at each other. Twoyears later, I asked her father permission totalk to her. He said no. Eventually I did talkto her, and my future father in law becameone of my best friends,” says Emilio.Emilio and Justina weremarried when she

was 19 and he 22.“We had about 40 guests at our wedding,”

says Justina. “They were mostly family. Inthose times we did not have big weddings, themoney was not so much.” On the day of thewedding, Emilio and Justina’s parents tookthem to see a show inLisbon, afterwhich theyescorted them to the apartment where they

were going to live. There, Justina’s par-ents handed her over to Emilio.Eight days after the wedding, Emilio

had to go to sea to further his training asan apprentice officer on passenger liners.Justina spent her time working on her

trousseau and making dresses. “I sewed alot. I had a beautiful trousseau. I did all theembroidery myself.” She carried on doingneedlework formanyyears, until in recentyears she was unable to continue, due tofailing health. They had two children, a daughter and

a son, born in Portugal and in 1966 theymoved to Cape Town. They moved arounda lot through the years, due to Emilio’swork commitments. They stayed for anumber of years in Monte Vista and Mos-sel Bay and now reside inWelgelegenwiththeir daughter, Maria.Their son, Jacinto, went back to Lisbon

as an adult to follow a marine career, anddaughter Maria studied at UCT and be-came a music teacher in Pinelands formany years. The De Sousa family has a long history

with Southern Africa. On 11 August 1916,the famous Cutty Sark, one of the last sail-ing ships to be built before steam shipswere introduced to the world, suffered astorm in Agulhas, lost a mast and had tobe towed to Cape Town for repairs. Theship was under command of Emilio’s un-cle, Frederico Viera de Sousa.Emilio’s father, Jacinto Viera de Sousa,

who was a chief engineer in shipping, moved to Maputo to settle in the shippingrepair business in 1915. After World War

II, the family went back to Portugal.Throughout her life, Justina had to man-

age without her husband for long periodswhile he was at sea, but her children, grand-children and later great-grandchildren kepther busy. Emilio only retired when he was80.She visited Portugal a few times, and once

her mother, Clotilde da Silva came to CapeTown for a four month visit, after Justina’sfather, Artur da Purificazzo died. “After thefourmonths, mymotherwent back to Portu-gal and died too, within amonth. Shemissedmy father too much.“They were very close. My father was a

lieutenant in the navy, a fantastic man. Andmy mother was a fantastic mother as well,”says Justina. They shy away from talking about them-

selves, but Emilio is keen to boast about hisgrandfather who once received a letter fromthe Duke of Braganza in Portugal. “Mygrandfather, captain Antonio José de Sousa, once took the prince and princess of Portu-gal on a boat trip out of Lisbon. The princess’hat blewoff andmygrandfather gave her hiscaptain’s cap.“The ship was under his command. The

prince wrote him a letter of thanks after-wards,” he says, and shows me the letter, written in black ink on yellowed paper in aneat, Portuguese hand.“Whenever people have asked Emilio and

Tina how they have managed to stay mar-ried for so long, they always reply that everynight they kiss each other good night, nomatter what,” says their granddaughterEloïse Jurgens, who stays in Panorama.

Emilio and Tina celebrate 70 years of marriage, together with their South African greatgrandchildren Justin, Kayleigh and Emilie, who all attend Panorama Primary School.

Durbanville singer/songwriter VernonBarnard, is passionate about many issues, not least of which is the issue of child safe-ty.

In fact, Vernon is so passionate aboutthe wellbeing of children, that he’s writtentwo songs, one in English and one in Afri-kaans, that carry a message aimed at creat-ing a better world for children.

“Through the years I’ve seen how peopletreat children,” Vernon says adding thathe thinks the most important thing chil-dren need is love.

“I’ve experienced that people buy theirchildren,” Vernon says, pointing out thattoo many parents simply push money intotheir children’s hands instead of offeringthem parental guidance.

“Little Child” is a song Vernon wrote fora tribute to John Lennon CD, titledThe Si-lence is broken he recorded for the SABC.

The song opens with the lyrics: “Littlechild tell me what you need.”

Vernon explains: “It’s a plea.” His wishis that people will listen to the lyrics of thesong and hear that what children need islove and attention.

His other song is for children who inmany cases, don’t have parents: streetchildren.

“Straatkind” asks the question: “Whyare those children on the street?”

“They stand there and they’re begging,”Vernon says of children often found at traf-fic lights, pointing out that drivers areusually quick to close their windows. “Putyourself in their shoes,” he says.

“I want people to be aware of things,”Vernon says, adding: “Just have some em-pathy, that’s all.”

When Vernon isn’t writing his own mu-sic, he is also involved with tribute per-formances and offers his services for char-ity or fundraising shows.V To find out more about working with Vernon, email him at [email protected] For Vernon’s songs visit www.tygerburger.co.za.

All childrenneed is love& attention

Vernon Barnard hopes his songs will makepeople rethink the way they treat children.

LOUISA STEYL@lounotes

From testing the waters to jumping in,singer/songwriter, Daniel Crossing iscelebrating his first new year as a full-

time artist. With a string of interviews and songs be-

ing playlisted on local radio stations, DanielCrossing is hard at work promoting his mu-sic.“The last album that I wrote is a rock al-

bum,” Daniel explains, referring to his sev-en trackalbum,BetweenBorders andAngels. He prefers to describe his music as soul

rock though. “More soulful than anythingelse,” he adds.“Lyrics are very important to me and it’s

about expressing themeaning of those lyricsto the person listening,” Daniel says of hismusic.“I think the most significant event in my

life was when I was 13 and I wanted to writea song,” he jokes, but that’s unofficiallywhere Daniel’s musical journey began. He goes on to explain that he was trying

to write the song with his cousins and real-ised he couldn’t write a song.Officially, he was attending an opera con-

cert at City Hall and while listening to thesingers, he thought to himself: “I want to dothat.”“Since that day I took music lessons and

I started singing everywhere I could,” Dan-iel says.

Own workHe started out singing in musicals, an op-

era society and choirs, always singing otherpeople’s songs.“At some point I just got to this point

where I said: ‘Hey, but what about your ownstuff’,” Daniel explains, adding: “Aboutthree years ago I said: ‘Okay, let’s start a newjourney’.”He was standing in a music shop one day

and saw the CD of a fellow musical actor, which is where Daniel decided: “If he can doit, so can I.”As he was driving home a song came into

his mind and that was how Daniel eventual-ly did start writing his own music. It was also his long walks to work while

working in a restaurant which gave himtime to think and process and Daniel saysthat’s where his lyrics were born.

StoriesDaniel says the songs he recorded for Be-

tween Borders and Angels tell a story. “Eachsong tells a specific story and then togetherthey tell the story of starting out on thewrong side of the line, if you want to call itthat, and thenmovingover to the right side,”he explains.Daniel adds that while the album’s songs

are rock-based, there are also touches of reg-

gae rock and adult contemporary. “I tried toplay around with the sound a little bit,” hesays.

LaunchedBetween Borders andAngelswas launched

in October last year and was produced byBrendyn “Rusti” Rossouw, from HeritageSound, engineered by David Langemannand mastered by Rogan Kelsey.Daniel’s album is available online at CD-

Baby, iTunes and Amazon.Hard copies are also available from Peter

Smuts Music in Parow and Mabu Vinyl inGardens.V For more information about Daniel Crossing, visithis website at www.danielcrossing.com, where youcan also find links to his social media pages.V Daniel Crossing performed one of his new songson the Orange Couch. The achievements of Charlaine CoetzeeHirst are nothing short of remarkable, hence her induction into the Women’s

Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) PlayersHall of Fame.Charlaine (40), who hails from Durban-

ville, was inducted into the Hall of Fame on10 December in Las Vegas, Nevada. It all startedwayback in 1978,whereChar-

laine, then a mere five years old, startedswinging clubs at theDurbanville Golf Club.

Durbanville“I started playing golf when I was 5 years

old. My dad was an avid golfer and I got totag along toDurbanvilleGolf Clubwheneverhe would play. I used to take him on at chip-ping and putting contests all the time.“I have such incrediblememories of grow-

ing up playing golf at Durbanville and play-ing with the ladies’ section there. I won theLadies Club Championship twice.“My mentor was Hylda Hamilton, who

took me under her wing. I was a WesternProvince provincial representative as a jun-ior and I also captained the Fairmont HighSchool golf team,”Charlaine reflected on thegood old days. She alsowon thePrenticeCupfor u-21 females in WP.After her high school career she packed

her bags for the USA to pursue her dream

of playing professional golf.“I managed to get a college scholarship to

Longwood College in Virginia and that iswhere my “career” began. I had a great col-lege playing career – I won the NationalChampionship for Division II schools 3times while at college and in my senior year1995 I won three major awards – VirginiaWomen Athlete of the Year, Honda Awardfor Division II Athlete of the year and To-day’s Top Eight Award (highest honour thatthe NCAA awards to college athletes),” saidCharlaine.

SAREL BURGER

Alleenlik oorwinnings in albei hierdie

kragmetings sal die Brakke in die wedloopom die trofee hou.Dié situasie is as gevolg van Brackenfell

In hul uitgestelde wedstryd Sondag teen
