This R25 million transport facility runs on solar power, enabling it to operate complete- ly off the electricity grid, and besides drink- ing water, harvests all other water through rooftop rainwater and recycling – a bench- mark for future public transport facilities in the country, according to the City of Cape Town. City of Cape Town mayco member for transport, Brett Herron, describes it as a fa- cility at the forefront of intelligent architec- tural design and technology. “The Wallacedene taxi rank is the first public transport facility in the country to be regarded as a ‘green’ building from the very foundation to the rooftop. It is largely self- sufficient in all its energy needs and saves thousands of litres of water through clever design,” Herron said, adding that this project showcases the city’s commitment to conservation and innovation. Self-sustaining The rank uses a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panel system arrayed at optimum ori- entation to the sun for its electricity genera- tion. It is equipped with 24 large batteries for the storage of reserve solar electricity to be used at night or on cloudy days. Everything is powered by this PV system, from the LED lights under the roof, to the electronic gates at the entrance and the hy- dro-boils in the kitchen. Herron says since 1 August the facility needed only one hour’s worth of electricity from Eskom, which he believes was re- quired only because the contractors used power tools on site during the final construc- tion phase. “It is estimated that the capital cost of this solar installation will be recovered within six to 10 years in monthly energy cost sav- ings,” he said. In designing the taxi rank, the city’s archi- tects also considered the huge demand for water at the site needed for washing taxis. “The use of potable water for car washing is regarded as a colossal waste of resources – from the precious source itself, to the infra- structure and electricity required to filter and pump the water. “Thus, the taxi rank was designed in such a manner that it can be self-sufficient in meeting its basic water needs Firstly through the harvesting of rainwater and sec- ondly by recycling up to 70% of the water used at the facility through an underground filtering and reclamation system,” he said. Reduced bills Herron says one of the most exciting fea- tures of this facility is the manner in which it uses the rank’s considerable roof area to harvest rainwater. “The rainwater is stored in an underground tank system with a stor- age capacity of up to 20 000 litres and is equipped with the necessary infrastructure to pump this water to the washing bays,” he says, adding that it will result in considera- ble reduction in monthly water bills. It is estimated that about 5 000 commuters will use the taxi rank on a daily basis, with approximately 50 minibus-taxis operating from there. The facility will protect commuters from the elements, provide full flush toilets, re- cyling bins, parking bays and benches. Furthermore, trading opportunities have been created for local entrepreneurs, with the provision of six informal trading bays and two kiosks just outside the facility. Silver Eagle keeps on riding highRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

An American style vintage bus is not acommon sight on Cape Town roadsbut don’t be surprised if you spot one

around Kuils River.Nearly half a century after it was built,

this particular silver and light-blue Ameri-can 42-seater Silver Eagle bus belongs toKuils River resident George Esbach. Hewants to utilise the single-decker vehicle totransport seniors and other passengersover long distances.

Esbach bought the bus several years agoand has since made it available to film andadvertising companies wanting to use it intheir productions.

So far the bus has featured in an advertfor an American beverage company, for apotato chips company and in an Indian filmproduction. Most recently, Esbach says, thebus featured in a local advert that was shotand filmed in Cape Town.

“This is one of the last American-stylebuses in Cape Town,” Esbach said.

Speaking to the TygerBurger from hishome in Reuter Street, he said that the 1972model bus was imported by the railways.

“They bought about 50 of these buses backthen because they were built to be used oncorrugated and farm roads. They are veryspecial not like all of the other buses, it isten times stronger,” said Esbach. Althoughhe is certain that the Silver Eagle is one ofkind in Cape Town, he is not entirely surewhether it’s the last remaining bus of itskind in the country.

“Perhaps there are still a few in Johan-nesburg,” he said.

Esbach’s hope is that more film and ad-vertising companies can use the bus, but al-so hopes to use it to transport senior citizensin the near future. He also wants to use thebus for long distance trips.

“If I have enough money I want to take

it to Johannesburg.”He added that he wants some minor main-

tenance work done to the bus.“My main aim is to preserve the detail of

the bus, keep it as original as possible,” hesaid. Over the years he has already mademinor renovations to the bus to maintainit.

While he points out that the bus is stillin 90% in order it is registered and certifiedto transport people anywhere in the coun-try.

“I can drive to Durban and back, withoutany effort,” he said with a confident smile.V Anyone wanting to use the bus can contact Esbach on 072 990 1078.

Wat is depressie?Daar is al baie oor depressie gepraat engeskryf.

depressielyer sal verwys as iemand wat’n soort mistroostige of “af-gevoel” heten homself moet regruk. Ons gebruik dikwels dieterm depressie in ons alledaagse gesprek-ke, byvoorbeeld: “My rugbyspan maakmy so depressief wanneer hulle so swakspeel.”

Wanneer jy egter depressief is, raak jy

verder oor depressie.V Kontak dr. S.T. Potgieter by 021 949 5007 [email protected].

Bikers vow to continue revving upopposition to e-tolls. A group ofmo-torcyclists are planning their next

ride all the way to the legislature.Richard Green, spokesperson for the

Cape Town Bikers Against e-tolls (BAT),says it will be their eighth peaceful pro-test against the e-tolls mooted for theWestern Cape. The group of several hundred bikers

fiercely oppose national roads agencySanral’s plans to impose the N1/N2Winelands e-tolls, currently a topic ofcontention between Sanral and anumber of parties, including the city.Green says they are simplywaiting for

the green light to hand over a memoran-dum at the provincial legislature, other-wise they are ready to go.“We are planning a protest ride for

Sunday 14 September. The plan is to endat the provincial parliament to handover a memorandum to Donald Grant,Western Cape Transport MEC,” he says.

SupportThe city strongly opposes the imple-

mentation of e-tolls, and Green says thememorandum will be to state their sup-port for the city’s opposition.“Thankfully theWesternCape govern-

ment opposes the tolls too, which is whywe hope to be partnering with as manyorganisations as possible to eliminateany possibility of more tolls on ourroads,” he says.Green says if Grant is not available to

accept their memorandum, they willhave to change the end venue, but ridethey will.

“The aim is to keep costs down for ourpeople, whoarealready struggling finan-cially.”The e-toll system, already in place in

Gauteng despite severe public opposi-tion, is currently being reviewed by apanel under the auspices ofGautengPre-mier David Makhura.City mayco member for transport,

Brett Heron, last week criticised SanralCEONazirAlli’s address to Parliament’stransport portfolio committee on 19 Au-gust.

Secret informationAlli is said to have accused the city of

going back on their word to withhold in-formation such as toll tariffs and incometo be generated from tolls.“However, the city never gave such an

undertakingand the cityhasnot renegedon the undertakings it has given. Thecity’s representatives agreed, as an in-terim measure, to keep information ob-tained from the bid documents confiden-tial,” Herron stated.Sanral spokesperson Vusi Mona stat-

ed on 10 August that: “Sanral’s alloca-tion from the fiscus is about R10 billionper annum for the entire national net-work and the N1/N2 Winelands projectrequires just about that amount.”“All that the city may say publicly at

this stage is Mona’s claim that theproject will cost about R10 billion isfalse. Sanral is preventing the city frominforming the public of the true costs ofthe project.”The city says it will make more infor-

mation about the project available assoon as it may legally do so. Mona couldnot be reached for Sanral comment onMonday.

South Africans Against Drunk Driv-ing(SADD), on Thursday hailed the Bel-lville Specialised Commercial CrimeCourt’s decision to jail a former police ser-geant for accepting a bribe.

On Tuesday Cornelius Wessels receivedan eight-year prison sentence from thecourt for accepting a R100 bribe to smug-gle a food parcel containing hidden daggainto a cell at the Cape Town police station.

The incident involved an undercoverpolice operation, during which a police in-formant posed as a prisoner.

The trap was set after Wessels had been

identified as a corrupt policeman.Magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg de-

scribed the incident as “absolutely shock-ing” and would not allow a correctionalsupervision sentence that would seeWessels released from prison after a shortstint, followed by house arrest and com-munity service.

“We urge courts to continue to see is-sues involving police or traffic officerstaking bribes in a very serious light andto sanction such crimes accordingly,”said SADD spokesperson Caro Smit.

“Bribes allow drunk drivers to get awaywith repeat offences, thinking that this isnot a serious crime and thus contributetoward our high death rate on the roads.”

The languages courses were initiated atUCT in 2003, to address this language imbal-ance by teaching medical students isiXhosaand Afrikaans.

The division of family medicine was rep-resented by Professor Derek Hellenberg, DrNayna Manga and Delena Fredericks.

The isiXhosa Section was represented byZukile Jama and the Afrikaans section byDr Joel Claassen and Dr Minnie Lewis.

The second round of classes was imple-mented at the two clinics in March 2014,with one-hour classes offered on a weeklybasis.

Participants were assessed during and atthe end of the training course.

The staff at both clinics who completedthe courses were enthusiastic, saying theirnew language skills would help them com-municate better with patients at their re-spective posts. Participating staff stressedthat the course also offered insight and un-derstanding of different patients’ cultures.

Build on your strengths, Dr Mol tells womenDESIRÉE RORKE

@dezzierorke

Television hottie and health guru DrMichael Mol spoiled a bunch of luckynorthern suburbs women with an in-

spirational talk celebrating Women’sMonth. The recent breakfast at Bon Amis Restau-

rant in Durbanville was hosted by Bellville

legal firmDeKlerk&VanGend forwomenworking in the real estate and conveyanc-ing industry. The charming doctor captivated his au-

dience with a talk about the importance ofplaying to your strengths.

Change focus“Unfortunately we live in a remedial

worldwhere the focus ismore often placed

on fixing your weaknesses, instead of build-ing on your strengths,” said Mol.“The truth, however, is that the older you

get and the more you grow, the more you be-come what you already are. Thus, you growmost in the areas of your greatest strengths,”he explained, saying this results in exponen-tial growth.“Know what your strengths are, and build

on them rather than focusing too much onyour weaknesses,” he said.He dispelled the modern myth that you can

be whatever you want or dream to be.“You simply cannot be anything you want

to be, but you can be a lot more by beingmoreofwhat you already are. In otherwords defineyour talents and work on them, do what youare great at and what you love,” he said.Mol himself never went for career counsel-

ling, thus becoming amedical doctor, an exec-utive producer, TV presenter, international

speaker, business consultant and a foundingmember of a multi-national company calledHello Doctor.

Vision to educateSouth Africans got to know him when, 15

years ago, he carried his charisma from thecasualty room over to the small screen as aTop Billing presenter. Then, as executive producer and present-

er he combined his passion formedicine andmedia and created two new TV series called“Hello Doctor” and “The DrMol Show”witha vision to educate, empower and inspireSouth Africans to be as healthy as possible.Today he’s a product architect and direc-

tor of Hello Doctor, a game-changing compa-ny that operates in several countries inAfri-ca as well as Indonesia - using mobile tech-nology to give everyone access to a doctoranytime, anywhere.

Linette Potgieter, JoAnn Compion, Dr Michael Mol and Carine Pretorius enjoy the crisp morningair at Bon Amis.

Beauty queen overcomes criticism

Diane Nel, the reigning Mrs Cape Town duringher interview with TygerBurger in Brackenfell.

DESIRÉE RORKE@dezzierorke

In the face of cruel comments, reigningMrs Cape Town, the zesty Diane Nel, en-courages women to be true to their own

character, to live in the moment, laugh a lot, love everyday and stand steadfast in theirfaith.

Diane (39) from Brackenfell mustered upenormous public support fromwomen in thenorthern suburbs when she was recentlycalled out as an “unworthy winner” for ap-parntly being “fat”.

An anonymous reader, who simply refersto herself as Sue, unleashed the fury of wom-en readers when she wrote a letter to Tyger-Burger the week after Diane’s win.

Readers outragedShe referred to TygerBurger’s front page

picture of 30 July featuring Diane’s crown-ing moment, stating that “it was a joke thatan overweight person wins a beauty compe-tition”.

“What are you promoting?” she asked.“Obesity, health issues and how to be a [sic]unattractive women?”

In the following week, TygerBurger wasbesieged with letters from readers on thetopic. One reader, Dominique, was disgust-

ed at what Sue had to say.“You think it’s a joke that ‘an overweight

person’ won a beauty competition. I, as well

as many others think it is absolutely bril-liant.

“Every single woman out there possess-es beauty regardless of weight, colour, orcreed. There is beauty in every woman. What you find unattractive is attractive tomany others. The overweight person forinstance probably has a better under-standing of diversity and acceptance ofuniqueness, and that in itself is beautiful,”she wrote.

Her opinion was echoed by many otherreaders such as Bianca, who called Sue“seriously superficial”.

“In my eyes (you are) an idiot for send-inga complaint like that!Doyou think thatonly skinny people are beautiful? No won-der our girls are growing up with eatingdisorders and depression! Wake up Sueand smell the media hype!

“Full figured women are women in eve-ry sense of the word and all women shouldbe celebrated irrespec-tive of what the scalereads or your dress sizeis,” she lashed out.

Other readers suchas Teroglynn blamedthe media for creating“small minded peoplesuch as Sue”.

“I feel for you, itmustbe frustrating knowingthat beauty comes indifferent shapes andsizes. This comingfrom a double plus sizebeautiful model,” sheproudly added.

Eileen de Beer said Sue has obviouslynever heard of the saying “beauty is in theeye of the beholder”.

“You should be ashamed of yourself!”she admonished.

In the final analysis, Natalie Richwoodand many other readers congratulated Di-ane, saying she was beautiful and an inspi-ration to all women.

Not surprisedDiane, amomof three,wasnot surprised

when TygerBurger interviewed her aboutthis issue the following week.

By no means overweight in the tradi-tional sense of the word, Diane, a striking-ly beautiful woman, said she had enduredsimilar pressure during the weeks leadingup to the pageant on 26 July.

“In the beauty industry it is expected of

all so-called beauty queens to be super skin-ny and at times I felt pressured to give it allup due to criticism from some corners. ButI pushed through, reminding myself why Ientered this competition,” she said.

The aim of this pageant, which runs underthe auspices of the Role Models organisa-tion, is to uplift the community, and Dianemade it her goal to renovate a derelict littlefarm school in Worcester for underprivi-leged children.

“In my wildest dreams I did not think Icouldwin this competition, but nowwith theactual title under my belt I can take up thechallenge. For me it was never about beingthe prettiest or the thinnest, it was abouthaving the title in order to use it for a higherpurpose,” she said.

“I worked very hard for this title. I attend-ed every single function possible to promotethe purpose of the pageant, which in my caseis fixing up this little school that has noth-

ing. I had to ask myselfthe critical question: ‘Doyou want this crown foryourself, or for what youcan achieve by means ofit?’”

Humanitarian passionFor Diane the answer

was a no-brainer and shewent on to finish whatshe started.

The Role Models orga-nisation encourages themodern women to identi-fy her strengths and live

out her passions.“What good would it be if I were a rake

thin ‘poppie’ with only a pretty face, whocould not open my mouth when called upon?Would that have helped me at all in tacklingcomplex social and community issues?Would anybody have taken me seriously?”

Diane’s humanitarian passion was obser-ved by the judges who also awarded her withthe Public Choice and Debutant Awards.

When it comes to beauty, Diane firmly be-lieves that it comes from within.

“Your character and your personality, notthe size of your thighs or breasts, reflect yo-ur beauty.

“Women are too hard on themselves whenit comes to body image and often develop abody complex, which is not healthy.

“I am a proud Mrs Cape Town, a motherof three, a wife for my husband, and I feelfabulous!”

In the following week,TygerBurger was besie

ged with letters fromreaders on the topic.

One reader, Dominique, was disgusted at what

Sue had to say.

I read the article “Parents needto quell kids’ drinking” withgreat interest (TygerBurger, 20August). While I would certain-ly throw my weight behindsuch a campaign, I cannot helpbut wonder how successful itwould really be.Youth, especially the kindwho grace this earth today, have a mind of their own. They say what they want, actthe way they want and they dowhat they want. Parents canindeed teach their childrenthat alcohol is bad for them, but they cannot stop themfrom trying it, especially whenthey are not around. But thefinal decision still lies with theone lifting the glass.

Verbeel jou! The Starstruck Voice Search is doingthings a little differently this year. The singing competition, running

since June, is whittling down the field to 15top contestants.Usually only the winner of the competi-

tion would get a chance to experience therecording process, but this year organisersCrazy World Production will give all top 15artists the opportunity to record a song. They will have to work for it though.“The idea is for the top 15 to raise the

funds to record, even if it is at a below-costprice,” said CrazyWorld spokesperson Bri-lynn van Rooyen.“This will teach them to work hard for

what they want to achieve and show uswhat they are made of in the real world,”he says. The local competition focuses on busi-

ness asmuch asmusic, and aims to developlocal talent. The top 15 contestantswill eachrecord a single, which is to be released asan album. The top 15 will host a fund-raising show

at The Hollywood Club in Brackenfell onFriday 29 August, where they’ll be joinedby Idols star Crushanda Forbes.Brilynn says the CD will not only give

contestants a chance to work in a studio, but it’s also a great way for the judges tosee which artists stand out andwho has thebiggest fan base. The competition is runweekly, with a top

contestant chosen each week.So far, Renier Conradie from Robertson,

Mad Square from Belhar, Jade Petersenfrom Durbanville, Jazaryn from Kuils Riv-er, Willy Joe la Mayer from Eesteriver andAdrian Jantjies from Mitchells Plain are

among those in the running for the topprizeof a recording and management deal, a CDlaunch and music video, photo shoot andmusic equipment. The contestants need to raise R30 000 to

record the album. Crazy World will coverthe rest of the funds needed and present thealbum launch. The top 10 contestants will perform along

the Garden Route in September.V Tickets for the fundraising show on Saturday 29August cost R50 and the show starts at 19:00. Sue van der Linde’s dream to establishthe best children’s hospice in the coun-try was given a significant boost when

the Western Cape Provincial Governmentrecently made a house available for the or-ganisation.The announcement was made by Van der

Linde, founder of Iris House Children’s Hos-pice, at their annualWinterBall, a fund rais-ing event held at the Table Bay Hotel on Sat-urday night.“Now that we have a property, all funds

raised will go toward renovating this housein order to provide a loving and nurturingenvironment for a child who has reachedend of life,” she said.In its third year, this organisation pro-

vides free community based respite care andcaters for the special needs of children withlife threatening illness or life limiting condi-tions.

Caring for familiesThe organisation is currently caring for

122 families in the northern suburbs, Mfule-ni, Khayelitsha and Vrendenburg fromWelgelegen.WesternCapePremierHelen Zille, who at-

tended the ball along with Tim Harris, headof investment for theCity of CapeTown, saidthis move has been a long time coming asgovernment alone cannot solve the challeng-es faced.“As stipulated by law, we have to utilise

state property for the highest value, but nomonetary value could be placed on the socialvalue a hospice will bring to society,” shesaid.“As government we are thrilled with the

little we can do for this organisation,” saidZille.“It gets to me how grateful you are for this

ramshackle derelict house, while so manyothers who get much more are not gratefulfor it,” she said.Zille said the Western Cape government

spends too much money on health condi-tions, such as HIV/Aids, which is entirelypreventable, while not enough is spent onnon-preventable conditions such as those

Iris House takes care of.“Even if this stance creates a massive ta-

boo in national government, it is somethingI will continue to talk about,” she said.“In themeanwhilewe depend on organisa-

tions such as Iris House to do the work gov-ernment can’t do,” she added.

RenovationsThe house situated on the Stikland resi-

dential grounds will cost the organisationR400 per month, but will need a top-to-toerenovation, which includes water and elec-tricity upgrades.DaveStewart, from theFWDeKlerkFoun-

dation, pledged R20 000 from the foundation,as well as its unfaltering support. In a message to Iris House, former presi-

dent FW De Klerk stated that the stature of

any society is measured by the care it showsto the least fortunate.“If you, as a parent or grandparent of a

healthy child donate to this cause, perhapsyou should see it as a profound offering ofthanks giving,” De Klerk said.Madeleine Badenhorst, one parent who

benefits from the work Iris House does, saysthe support she has received from them hasbeen life changing.“They have therapists who understand

special needs children and this has liftedmuch of the burden off my shoulders. WhenI don’t have the funds or resources, they stepin at the drop of the hat,” she said.“They truly understand what it is like to

be the parent of a special needs child.”V See our website at www.tygerburger.co.za for a social picture gallery.

TheCity ofCapeTown’s social developmentand early childhood development directo-rate urges community organisations work-ing with vulnerable groups to apply forrates rebates as soon as possible.

Shelters working with homeless peopleand homes catering for physically or men-tally challenged individuals andvulnerablegroups need to register with the city’sHomeless Agency Committee to apply forrebates related to rates, solid waste, waterand sanitation, and sewage by 31 August.

In the past financial year the city has heldinformation sessions to ensure interestedorganisations are informed of this opportu-nity as well as the relevant documentationneeded and process to follow to qualify forrelief during the 2014/2015 financial year.

“We’ve discovered in the past that someorganisations are unaware of the policy,

while others have failed to qualify for reliefmerely because they did not have the neces-sary documentation, orwere unsure how tofill in the forms,” said city mayco memberfor social development and early childhooddevelopment, Suzette Little.

“So, last year we started the informationsessions to assist organisationswhodo ster-ling work in our communities but who of-ten struggle to covermunicipal costs due tofunding constraints.”

Formore information onhow to apply forthe rebates, NGOs can contact the City’sCall Centre on 0860 103 089 or visit theirnearest municipal office.

Amendments to the city’s Rates RebatePolicy to allow registered Early ChildhoodDevelopment (ECD) centres to apply for re-bates are also planned.Thepolicy currentlyexcludes ECD centres.

@loumotes

After almost a year away from the stage,Reburn have emerged from their “wri-ting cave” with a brand new album.

The indie rock outfit recently launchedtheir secondalbum,Majestic, five years aftertheir debut-release, All Tied Up.

Frontman Scottie Moore says Majestic isvery different from their first album andthey have started changing some of their ol-der songs to keep them in linewith their newmaterial.

“The sound is a bit more epic, I would sayit’s a bit more mature.” While there is stilla definite indie influence on the album, Scot-tie points out there are also splashes of rockand an alternative style to be heard.

Living legendHe points out that the bandmade a consci-

ous decision about a year ago that they weregoing to make music that they listen to andenjoy playing.

“Wewanted tomakemusic thatwe’re hap-py playing, because you are going to playthese songs hundreds and thousands of ti-mes.”

The album was recorded by HeritageSound’s Brendyn “Rusti” Rossouw who gui-tarist, Alex McFarlane, dubs “already a li-ving legend in the industry”.

After working with Reburn on “No OtherPlace” and “Won’t Let Go”, their most suc-cessful single to date, Brendyn approached

them after a show and convinced the bandthe time was right to record a full album.

“He was actually the driving force behindthis album,” Scottie says. The band spent amonth in studio as opposed to the few shorthours previously, and Scottie says it was anice experience to be able to take their time.

Although the album’s name fits perfectlywith the image of a derelict aeroplane on thecover, the design was somewhat of a flukeor “divine intervention” as Alex calls it.

Touring“We kind of just threw a whole bunch of

words together and we just picked from the-re,” explains guitarist, Craig Hermanus.

Alex says Reburn are busy finalising thedetails for a new music video, but there arealso twoother videoprojects includingdocu-mentary and outdoor performance footage“in the wings”.

Theyhavebeen confirmed to playRockingthe Daises in September and are planning atour around the festival before heading offon a coastal tour in November.

The plan is to take the album to as manyand venues as possible, no matter how bigor small. “We just want to get in people’sfaces,” Scottie says.

Capetonions can catch the band at CaféRoux in Noordhoek on Friday 5 September.Tickets cost R80. Email [email protected] to book.V Reburn visited the Orange Couch to give readersa taste of their new album. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch their performance and interview.

ArterialNetwork SouthAfrica (ANSA) is in-viting applications to participate in one ofits advocacy toolkit workshops to be held onWednesday 10 and Thursday 11 September.

The workshops form part of ANSA’s CivilSociety Campaign funded by the Interna-tional Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD).

Theworkshopwill focus on strengtheningthe capacity of organisations in the creativesector to advocate for issues of concern tothem. These issues may include better fund-ing policies, lobbying policymakers, lobby-ing decision-makers, challenging the abuseof power or alerting the public to issues af-fecting artists, curators or othersworking inthe creative sector.

ANSA believes stronger organisationscan better represent the interests of peopleworking in the sector and challenge policy-

makers to address artists’ needs. They aim to develop capability within the

arts environment and encourage proactiveleadership in the industry.

Emerging leaders in creative sector or-ganisations can apply to participate in theworkshop by sending a letter of motivationindicating howyouwish to help build the ca-pacity of organisations in your field or area, together with a CVwith two contactable ref-erences to [email protected] before Saturday 6 September.

Bellville’s ‘The Kid’ earns respect

Shaun de Lange is undefeated in the EFC Africa welterweight division.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

To have your fellow professional MMAfighters come shake your hand after aepic battle shows you have earned re-

spect. This iswhat happened to Shaun “TheKid”

de Lange after he beat Gordon Roodman atEFC Africa 32 two weeks ago.Shaun, aptly named “The Kid” at the age

of 21, is showing a lot ofmaturity in thehexa-gon and is currently unbeaten after threeprofessional fights in the welterweight divi-sion.Some EFC critics reckon this is one of the

best fights they have ever seen.“I feel honoured that people think that.

Myself and Gordon fought hard that night,it was a bloody mess. We stood and tradedstrikes all fight. Gordon, likeme is awarriorand I respect the hard work he puts in.

Great team“My coaches Dean Johnson and Earl Ab-

rahams are great, always pushing me andkeeping me focused. To be a top fighter youneed a great coaching teamand that is exact-ly what I have,” said a satisfied Shaun.

Shaun learned the art of fighting underthe guidance of GrahamTurner. But, for thelast year Shaun decided to join Lethal EdgeMMA and Fitness Centre managed and

coached by Dean Johnson.“Shaun is really growing in leaps and

bounds, he is much more refined and youcan’t help feel excited for what the future

holds for him,” says Dean.“I see him as an accomplished fighter at

21, there aren’tmany that youngwith his ex-perience.”For now, it’s back in the gym training

hard.

In his own backyardShaun trains five days a week for about

four hours a day. Covering all the basics, with no two sessions are the same.“I will love to fight in my own back yard

at GrandWest on 6 November when it’s EFCAfrica 35. I don’t have any specific fighterin mind, that is up to the EFC, so I will waitand see what they offer. My target now is tojust keep fighting in the organisation,” saidShaun.According to Dean, they would love to

have one or twomore fights before consider-ing a title bout.“I think it will be wise to give Shaun one

of two more fights before we start focusingon a potential title fight. Seeing that he onlyhas three professional fights, it only makessense to give him one or two more fights.”Shaun beat Booto Guylain and Saxon De-

lafield in his previous outings.

Bronze in Germanyfor young B’ville golferSome junior golfers from South Africa gar-nered some glory on the greens in Germanyrecently.Western Province junior Altin van der

Merwe was the best SA representative as hetook third in his European debut at the pres-tigious RB German Junior tournament. Also performing well were Paul Boshoff,

who tied for seventhwhile fellow juniors Jo-vanRebula andTristenStrydomcracked thetop 20 at Golfclub Heddesheim in Gut Neu-zenhof in the beginning of August. The start did not go well for van der Mer-

we, who was disappointed with an openinground of 75, but the Sanlam SA Amateur fi-nalist rebounded with a seven under 65 inthe second round, breaking into the top four.It started well for the 17-year-old Bellville

golfer in the third round as he reeled in twobirdies over the front nine and another pair

just after the turn to dip to four under par. However, he skidded backwards with bo-

geys at the 13th, 15th and 16th, but salvagedhis round with a birdie at the par-five fifthand par at the par-four 18th for a 70.This meant that a six-under-par 210 total

sawvanderMerwe slip into third, a shot shyof Germany’s second-placed Philipp Boegal, and 10 shots behind the champion, JarandEkeland from Norway.VanderMerwewas amember of the South

African Golf Association’s junior side thatwon the All-Africa Junior Golf Champion-ship in Zambia in April, and the team thatclaimed a top 10 finish at the Toyota JuniorGolf World Cup in Japan in June.Between rounds, the four juniors had the

chance to explore Gut Neuzenhof and vanderMerwe thoroughly enjoyedhis first viewof Europe.“I’ve had some amazing experiences this

seasonand thisweek inGermanywasanoth-er amazing experience,” gushed the delight-ed WP teenager.“The town is full of historical sites and old

buildings, which was really amazing to see.The hotel and staff and the organisers of thetournament were incredibly nice and effi-cient, making the whole experience special.“The course was beautiful and in great

condition, but it is incredibly tough. It wasplaying pretty slow and it has a lot of out ofbounds areas.“If you are not accurate, it costs you big

time, as I found out with that quadruple bo-gey in the first round,” he recalls.Van der Merwe explained that this hap-

pened even after what seemed to be a goodshot.“I hit a good tee shot down the fairway, but

we couldn’t find my ball,” he said.“I reloaded, went out of bounds and ended

upmakingabignumberbut I’mreallyproudof the way I came back and kept myself incontention. It was a great week for all of us.”Meanwhile, Boshoff, the country’s

number one ranked junior, also broke intothe top 10 of the acclaimedWorld JuniorGolfTournament Series event with rounds of 74and 68.The reigning Nomads SA Boys u-19Match

Play champion fromEkurhuleni also cardeda 70 to secure a share of seventh on four-un-der-par 212.SouthernCape’s JovanRebulawas the on-

ly South African outside the top 20 afterrounds of 71 and 74, however, the Ernie Elsand Fancourt Foundation member also ral-liedwith a 70 in the final round to tie for 17thon one under 215.Ekurhuleni’s Strydom also closed out a

good week for the local juniors in Germany. The reigningNomads SABoys u-19 Stroke

Play champion carded rounds of 78, 66 and72 to tie for 19th on even-par 216.

Altin van der Merwe placed third at the recentat RB German Junior played at the GolfclubHeddesheim in Gut Neuzenhof, Germany.

Durbanville golfer Ian Snyman edged outLimpopo junior Hennie du Plessis toclaim the Southern Cape Open at MosselBay Golf Club on Sunday 17 August. The victory came exactly two years af-

ter the 19-year-old Province golfer wasleading the same event, but was pippedat the post by a birdie finish from SiphoBujela at George Golf Club. This time, however, Snyman rode on

the confidence of his recent podium fin-ishes at the WPGU Premier AmateurTour at King David, Atlantic Beach andKuils River to a one stroke victory on 10-under-par 278 and joined a growing listof first-time winners this season, includ-ing NJ Arnoldi, Keegan de Lange, JasonSmith, Hendrikus Stoop, James du Preez,Burger Heckroodt, Luke Trocado, Tris-ten Strydom, Gregory Royston and Mar-co Steyn with his maiden provincialbreakthrough.Snymanwas six strokes behind 36-hole

leader Herman Loubser from Boland, af-ter rounds of 69 and 72.He eagled the par-five second in the

third round and reeled in five birdies fora six-under-par 66 to join local favourite,Nicholas Mitchell, in the lead at nine un-der.The pair carried a one stroke lead over

Loubser and rising WP star, Altin vander Merwe, into the final round. The Ernie Els and Fancourt Founda-

tion member kept the lead with 10straight pars, while his closest challeng-ers struggled in the windy conditions.“The wind began pumping on Sunday

afternoon,” Snyman said.“The pins were tucked in impossible

spots and because the layout is so open, the wind made the set up even trickier.“You had to pick your lines carefully

to make par and I just focused on notdropping shots. I finally knocked in a twometer putt at the 11th for birdie. Threeholes later, the wrong option cost me ashot though.“I hit a solid tee shot at the par-four

14th, but I went with a gap-wedge to thegreen and the ball cameup just short. Theball caught the fringe and bounced about10 meters back into the fairway and Iwalked off with a five.”He managed to cancel the lone drop

with a great birdie at the 16th to stayahead.“I made a hash of the 16th in the first

two rounds, so I changed strategy andwent with a five-iron off the tee,” he said.“I hit it straight down themiddle of the

fairway and hit a gap-wedge just left ofthe flag. The ball caught the slope perfect-ly and rolled to about four meters fromthe pin.

“I got the pace just right and the ballcaught the top of the cup and dropped inthe cup. I was two shots ahead of Hennieat that stage, but he knocked in a birdieputt at the 18th, so I knew I couldn’t affordanother bogey. I just made sure I got mypars at the last two holes.”Snymanmatriculated last year and has

’n groot drag slae teen J.G.

– (Sarel Burger)
