Looking for a Career in High Demand with Options? A career in dental assisting offers both with excellent job placement.

The Dental Assisting program offers educational and clinical experiences withcurrent technologies, including digital radiographs and computer technology, in astate-of-the-art dental lab housed in our new facility space.

The program consists of classroom, laboratory & pre-clinic; plus 13 weeks ofinternship. Classes meet Monday and Wednesday evening, full days on Friday, andevery other Saturday. Internships typically begin in June and take place duringregular business hours.

Course content includes basic aspects of dental terminology & dental sciences;anatomy & physiology; microbiology; sterilization procedures; and radiologyhealth and safety.The program will consist of three modules to model the DANB(Dental Assisting National Board) exam: Infection Control; Radiation Health andSafety; and General Chair-side. Students will sit for each part of the DANB examafter they successfully complete each program component. Passing the threesegments of the DANB exam is a requirement for certification.

Certified Pharmacy Technician(Approved for WIA Funding)Today’s health care environment offers opportunities to entera new career as an allied health care professional. The needin pharmacy for technical support staff continues to grow.Opportunities abound for pharmacy technicians in varioussettings, from retail to institutional operations such ashospitals and home care pharmacy providers. The FederalBoard of Labor Statistics (BLC) estimates there are now300,000 pharmacy technicians working nationwide, andpredicts employment will grow by an additional 18%between 2005 and 2010. Pharmacy technicians support thepharmacist, lending direct support to the pharmacy operationas a whole. This is an intensive 15-week (60 hour) programthat provides basic skills and training through extensive lecturediscussions and practical problem-solving exercises designedto give the student the skills needed to work as a certifiedpharmacy technician anywhere in the United States. Phlebotomy Technician CertificationPreparation(Approved for WIA Funding)

Classes begin September 10.Learn how to collect blood and specimen samples for yourcurrent job, or to make yourself more marketable. Thephlebotomy technician is an integral member of the healthcare team in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinicallaboratories, physician offices and medical centers.This 18-19week program, accredited by the National PhlebotomyAssociation (NPA), provides 200 hours of classroom theoryand clinical lab instruction in accordance with NPA standards.Students who successfully complete the program are eligiblefor a two-day externship at either the Department ofLaboratory Medicine at John Dempsey Hospital of UConnHealth Center, Middlesex Hospital Lab or Shoreline Clinic.Course content includes basic aspects of medical terminology;anatomy and physiology; venipuncture; specimen collectionprocedures; safety and universal precautions; common labora-tory tests with clinical significance to body systems and diseaseprocesses; and laboratory equipment. Upon successfulcompletion of the program, students will be eligible to sit forthe National Phlebotomy Association exam. General InformationContinuing Education Units (CEUs):Some non-credit courses give Continuing EducationUnits. The CEU is a nationally-recognized standardreporting measure for continuing education activities.One CEU will be awarded for each 10 hours oforganized instruction. A permanent record isestablished for each student enrolled in a non-creditcourse. A certificate is issued to those whosuccessfully complete a CEU course. For a course thatis awarded CEUs (or for someone seeking a certificateof completion for a course) the student must attend atleast 80% of the sessions and achieve a passing grade inthe course.

Withdrawals/Refunds: Refunds may be obtainedif your written withdrawal is submitted to theWorkforce Development & Continuing EducationOffice three business days prior to the first meeting ofyour class. Refunds generally take 2-4 weeks to process.There are no refunds for motorcycle classes.
