Definitions of Specifications

Frequency ResponseMaximum peak to peak variation measured between any twopoints in the operational bandwidth at a given location in theCATV plant. The maximum allowable peak to valley variation isN/10 + 1 dB - tilt. Measured with diplex filters, a 1 dB attenua-tor to simulate a valued equalizer insertion loss, and an inter-stage pad 1S board with jumper.

Minimum Full GainMinimum input to output station gain with automatic controlmodule set to highest output. Minimum full gain is measuredwith diplex filters, a 1 dB attenuator to simulate a valued equal-izer insertion loss, and an interstage pad 1S board with jumper.

Typical Operating GainMinimum input to output station gain allowing for the properreserve gain for the automatic control module or thermal net-work where appropriate. Typical operating gain is measured insame test configuration as minimum full gain.

Automatic Slope and GainEquivalent cable variation at the upper frequency. Slope is theamount of cable equalization provided in the amplifier. Theslope is specified as the difference in gain between the highestand lowest frequencies.

Internal Station TiltSlope of the amplifier station.

Noise FigureMeasured for both the highest and lowest channels at opera-tion gain with diplex filters, a 1 dB attenuator to simulate a val-ued equalizer insertion loss, and an interstage pad 1S boardwith jumper.

Additional Information can be found in Section L - Glossary

Hum ModulationHum and low frequency distortions are "undesirable signalmodulations" related to power line or the video vertical syncfrequencies. This is caused by variations in the visual carrieramplitude at power line frequency or its harmonic. Hum modu-lation is measured at maximum current passing.

Cross ModulationA form of distortion when the modulated video components orany video carrier of any other channel will cross modulate orcouple to the video carrier of any other channel in the opera-tional bandwidth. This appears as undesirable beats in anoth-er carrier. Measured at stated reference levels using NCTAstandard methods with synchronous square wave modulation.

Composite Triple BeatComposite third order distortion is the amplitude distortion ofdesired signals caused by third order curvature of non-lineartransfer characteristics in system equipment. CTB is the ratioexpressed in dB of the peak level of the RF signal to the peakof the average level of the cluster of distortion components cen-tered around the carrier. CTB is measured with CW carriers, carrier to average CTB, unmodulated carriers on any channel.

Composite Second OrderComposite second order distortion is the amplitude distortion ofa desired signal caused by the second order curvature of thenon-linear transfer characteristic occurring in the CATV systemequipment. It is the ratio, expressed in dB, of the peak level ofthe desired RF signal to the peak of the cluster of distortioncomponents falling in the sideband of the desired signal at ±.75and ±1.25 MHz around the carrier.

leg and input to bridger• Built-in -20 dB directional coupler test points for more

accurate set-up and monitoring• Plug-in thermal network for temperature compensation• Built-in diplex filter for surge protection and two-way operation• Plug-in signal directors to allow signal flow from left-to-

right or right-to-left• AC power directors for power pass or block from input or output• Through current capability of 12 Amps in the main

intermediate path

DescriptionThe variable intermediate/terminating trunk module is used inthe forward system to provide feeder locations between trunkor distribution amplifier stations or to terminate the trunk systemwhere existing trunk requirements end. In the intermediate con-figuration, the trunk signal is passed through the module (with-out amplification) and is tapped off, equalized, amplified androuted to a bridger module. In the terminating configuration, theinput signal is equalized, amplified and routed to a bridger mod-ule. The module is configured for intermediate or terminatingoperation by means of a plug-in passive device.

The module is variable, meaning a plug-in passive can beplugged into the module, allowing the user to select a splitter, 8dB or 12 dB coupler in the intermediate mode. A plug-in jumper isselected to place the module in terminating mode. This module isreversible, allowing signal directors to be positioned such that thestation RF direction can be either left-to-right or right-to-left.

DescriptionThe distribution amplifier provides a variety of configurations forboth trunk and feeder applications. When auto control is used, this station is ideal for fiber to the serving area applications, tapped trunk systems, local area networks, improving feeder sta-bility, or as a cost effective substitute for the terminating bridger.

The distribution amplifier is available with push-pull, standardparallel hybrid, PT parallel hybrid, standard feed forward andFT feed forward technologies. The station may be set for man-ual, thermal regulation or automatic slope/gain control.

Housings are available in either two or four port configurations. The four port housing allows level and signal routing through plug-in passive devices, mounted on the seizure boards. This reducesthe need for connecting external passive devices which lowersthe chance for signal leakage and cable pull-out problems.

AC bypass and lightning filtering are accomplished on separateseizure boards mounted within the housing. Power passing andblocking are external to the amplifier module so that power is passedthrough the housing even in the absence of the amplifier module.

Distribution ProductsDistribution Amplifiers

DescriptionThe distribution amplifier power supply module is used in thedistribution amplifier station to convert station AC input voltageto a well-regulated DC voltage for station powering. The switch-ing regulated supply provides improved efficiency over a stan-dard linear power supply which results in cost savings in oper-ating expense. The switching regulated supply is a constantpower device, meaning that it automatically adjusts its internaloperating parameters for most efficient use of different levels ofvoltage and current within a system. The supply automaticallydetermines load power requirements and adjusts its operationso that only that amount of power is provided.

DescriptionThe distribution amplifier automatic control module is used inthe forward system to provide carrier level control of the slopeand gain circuits in the distribution amplifier module, and pro-vides AGC systems up to 600 MHz. The automatic controlmodule samples the band of signals of the distribution amplifi-er output, monitors a high-band carrier (high pilot), and pro-vides error correction input to the slope and gain circuits in theevent level changes occur. The closed loop system ensures aconstant distribution amplifier output level despite changes insignal level prior to the station. It operates from either modulat-ed carriers by detecting the peak carrier level during the syncinterval or from unmodulated CW carriers.

The automatic control module features excellent internal tem-perature stability, total immunity to adjacent channel levelchanges, total immunity to changes in modulation level or con-tent, true peak carrier detection with either modulated orunmodulated inputs, and simple, accurate set-up.

True Tilt Correction NetworkSCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA

DescriptionDuring initial set-up of the system, the true tilt correction net-work allows conversion of true tilt signals to a flat response. The network is connected between the test point and the fieldtest equipment with a short length of 75 ohm test cable. Thisresults in a flat overall signal amplitude (frequency responseobserved when the signals are properly tilted). Measurementscan thus be made without lengthy, error-producing calculationsto ascertain flatness of response. Frequency response: cableequivalent ±0.2 dB.

Regal Tap & Passives Ordering InformationRegal is proud to introduce the RMT Multitap which incorpo-rates both Blocking Cap and Continuous Power Bus (CPB)technologies. The RMT taps will not deliver power to the drop, but will provide continuous power and RF signal even with thefaceplate removed. When the operator decides to upgrade, orneeds to replace a tap faceplate, there will be no service inter-ruption to any subscriber other than those served by that par-ticular tap. The nomenclature for these products will have a"BCP" suffix in the model number to denote the inclusion ofboth Blocking Caps and CPB technologies ("BC" for BlockingCap,"P for continuous Power).

The CPB kit does not provide power to the drop. Only the PowerPassing Upgrade Kit provides power to the drop. This featurewill enable operators to provide advanced cable/telephony ser-vice to their subscribers by delivering power to NetworkInterface Devices (NIDs) at the home. Two powering options willbe available, either on the same coaxial cable that currently pro-vides RF signal, or down a twisted pair adjacent to the coax.

Consult your Telewire Supply Sales Representative fordetails on these products.

Glossary of Terms

CPB - Continuous Power Bus: Provides downstream powerand RF signal with tap faceplate removed

Surge Protection: Optional feature for all line passives (RPI,RLS, RLDC). Shunts voltage surges to ground, protecting theactive passive system components. Voltage surges can be fromlightning, power supply surges and power grid surges.

Blocking Caps: Capacitors that block AC voltages to thedrop. This reduces hum mod distortion and reduces damageto the drop.

Features• Hybrid IC circuitry for high output with low distortion• Designed for critical applications requiring high gain• Exceeds FCC specs for both conducted and radiated

interference at full output level• External fuse for ease of replacement• LED pilot light• Line transient protection• Available in 300, 450 and 550 MHz bandwidths

DescriptionThe BIDA is a completely self-contained indoor distributionamplifier designed specifically for signal distribution systemswhich use a "cable drop" as a signal source. Three models areavailable: the 5400-35 with 50 to 300 MHz bandpass, the 5400-45 with 50 to 450 MHz bandpass and the 5400-55 with 50 to550 MHz bandpass. The basic amplifier is configured for one-way operation. Optional field installable modules provide two-way capability with either a passive or active sub-channelreturn path.

The BIDA has a flat operating gain of 51 dB which can beadjusted down to 41 dB with the variable attenuator. Gain andslope controls are located on the front panel for easy set-upand adjustment. Two -30 dB back-matched test points are pro-vided to permit testing without interruption of service.

In applications where input signal levels are too high or wheregreater cable equalization is necessary, the BIDA can bereconfigured by using plug-in attenuators and cable slopeequalizers to meet particular system requirements.

Push-pull, hybrid IC modules enable the BIDA to operate athigh output levels while retaining low distortion characteristics.

The aluminum chassis is designed to provide excellent heatdissipation, thus allowing operation at high ambient tempera-tures with no degradation of performance or reliability.

BIDA-RF Return Filter SetPlug-in return filter adds passive reverse path to BIDA seriesamplifiers. Each BIDA-RF contains a high pass (50-450 MHz)and a low pass (5-30 MHz) filter element with a common (5-450MHz) connecting point. A sheet metal cover is mounted overthe circuitry to improve stability and prevent accidental de-tun-ing during shipping, handling and installation. The filters sepa-rate sub-band (return) signals from VHF (forward) signals forprocessing within the amplifier. Two identical BIDA-RF units inthe set make an amplifier bi-directional. A passive returnjumper wire is supplied to complete the sub-band path.

BIDA-RA Return AmplifierPlug-in return amplifier adds reverse path gain to BIDA seriesamplifiers. The BIDA-RA is a sub-band (5-30 MHz) amplifierwith 24 dB gain. It contains a 12 dB variable slope control anda 12 dB variable gain control. A BIDA-RF return filter set(54011) is required to complete the system.

Description

The Blonder-Tongue ACA is a broadband indoor distribution amplifierdesigned specifically for CATV and SMATV RF distribution systemswhich use a "cable drop" as a signal source. Two models are available:the 5430 with 40 to 300 MHz bandpass, and the 5440 with 40 to 450MHz bandpass. Both are designed for apartment complex applications.

The ACA has a flat operating gain of 30 dB which can be adjusteddown to 22 dB with the variable attenuator. Gain and slope controls arelocated on the front panel for easy set-up and adjustment.

A push-pull hybrid IC module enables the ACA to operate at high out-put levels while retaining low distortion characteristics.

The aluminum chassis is designed to provide excellent heat dissipa-tion, thus allowing operation at high ambient temperatures with nodegradation of performance or reliability.
