w e all want to feel safe, physically and emotionally. And many of life’s anxieties – unemployment, divorce, vasectomy and 50km/h speed limits –

still hold out the prospect of something better in the future. Centrelink may find you a job that takes you to Paris every month to buy shoes for a famous pop star. Today might be the very day you step out into the traffic and get hit (gently) by a car driven by the soon-to-be-spouse of your dreams, and vasectomies can be reversed.

But far too frequently I’m reading about stabbings, bashings, home invasions and domestic brutalities that challenge my hopes and desecrate my world view like a dog turd on the couch.

Good on Premier Ted for saying refugees are “as Australian as the Anzac legend of Simpson and his donkey and should be embraced with open arms”, but the fact that it even needs to be said makes my nostrils flare.

Last week the Liberal Party’s Teresa Gambaro let me down – unlike a certain underarm product that promises the opposite – with such a thud I thought my extremities had turned to stone. I know she has apologised, but where were her minders when she suggested that new arrivals who want to integrate into Australian society should use a deodorant? Her

comments did not make me feel safe. Has Ms Gambaro never walked up the stairs of a suburban block of flats and inhaled the familiar and piquant Aussie odour of frying bacon, eggs and cat’s piss?

We’re all vulnerable and we have to acknowledge that we’re constantly affecting and being affected by one another or we will become a nation of automatons. Too

scared to smile at strangers, too cautious to take a chance, leaving no stone unturned and no margin for better metaphors. Our actions and words reflect who we are and when we treat each other with no respect, no compassion and no tenderness – cover your eyes, kids, it’s

not a pretty sight.On a recent flight I witnessed a

catalogue-perfect tiny child waddle over to the galley, shove her hand out with an empty glass and say, “I want Coke”.

The flight attendant nodded at her reassuringly.“I want Coke,” she repeated.“What else do you say?” he suggested.“Just give it to her, will you!” her mother snarled

without even looking at him.I did want to give it to the mother, but I’d just painted

my nails. To quote a friend who’s a purser, “We’re here to save your arse, not lick it!”

What happened to “Please”, “Thank you” and “Can I

help?” Did polls and market research reveal that respect is not what people want?

I believe we’re unsafe because we no longer make eye contact. We’ve been convinced that to be safe is to not get involved, to look away, and to be absent. We’ve ceased being curious about each other. We need to be able to look at each other, to know what the other is like; dark skinned, yellow skinned, white skinned, in silk or rags. In thongs, shoes or muddy feet; walking or in a wheelchair; frail, strong, demure or rowdy. Those with all their limbs and those with some missing.

This Australia Day, look into a stranger’s eyes, not in a sad-puppy, head-tilted-to-one side kind of way, but with a smile. So they know you recognise their unique individuality.

Warning: this may develop into a new psychosis called Pronoia, the fear that people are conspiring behind your back to help you. \

Our models

It’s the lifestyle of Australia that is the envy of the rest of the world. It may no longer be all that dinky-di having adapted and adopted bits and pieces from all the cultures that have gone into the melting pot to make us what we are today.

Former Seeker Bruce Woodley summed up what we have become in the song he co-wrote for the 1988 Bicentennial:

We are one but we are many And from all the lands on Earth we come We share a dream and sing with one voice:“I am, you are, we are Australian.”

Australian fashion is young, energetic and powering ahead. It is sure to get richer by tapping into the myriad influences of all the people who now call Australia home. Our models already reflect the diversity, they just need the opportunities. \

Safety in numbers: Rebecca (left) and Greg Foot-Connolly with Elise, Caitlin and Daniel.(jaRRoD baRnEs)

W hen Rebecca Foot-Connolly was a child, she almost drowned. “I was saved at Elwood Beach,” she recalls. “I was taken out with an undertow.” The frightening experience never left the

Parkdale mother of three, who was a lifesaving Nipper at the time.

Ironically, she was a good swimmer. Growing up in Springvale, the family holidayed at her grandfather’s beach property at Cape Woolamai on Phillip Island. “I finished when I was 15 or 16,” Rebecca says of her time with the Nippers. “I won an award in my last year.”

The near-drowning taught her that no matter how good a swimmer you are, or think you are, the sea can be dangerous and commands respect – even in Port Phillip Bay, which is not generally known for treacherous conditions.

Rebecca’s love of swimming is shared by husband Greg, who she met as a fellow St John Ambulance volunteer. “Our courtship was boogie boarding and camping,” she says in their comfortable and relaxed family home, a stone’s throw from Mentone Beach.

They also share a name after combining surnames

when they married; she was Foot, he was Connolly. “It was his suggestion,” Rebecca says. “He said marriage is a partnership and you shouldn’t have to give up yours and I’m not giving up mine. How about we hyphenate?”

This practical teamwork has continued while raising their own water babies. Most weekends over summer at their local beach, you’ll find a Foot-Connolly patrolling. Occasionally you’ll also find their King Charles cavaliers Millie and Bella enjoying a day out.

Rebecca, who works in the health sector, Greg, an oil-industry professional, and children Daniel, 20, Elise, 19, and Caitlin, 14, have been members of Mentone Life Saving Club since Caitlin was a baby, starting as Nippers, like their mother. Father and children are also qualified lifesavers.

Caitlin, who is about to start year 9 at Star of the Sea College in Brighton, this year won the Victorian Champion Junior Lifesaver of the Year award and attended a youth leadership camp as a result. All three siblings have won awards at club level and state lifesaving events. Daniel also plays football and the girls play netball.

Melbourne is not noted for its suburban sands like Sydney, famous for steep cliffs, the harbour and

If you’re swimming at Mentone Beach, the chances are you will find a Foot-Connolly patrolling, writes Cheryl CrItChley.

TV shows such as Bondi Rescue. But the local beaches have their charms; Tom Roberts and Charles Conder once painted the bare and eroding Mentone bluffs, which have since been stabilised and vegetated.

They also have their dangers, such as choppy water and tricky currents that can trap swimmers who underestimate the usually calm bay, such as migrants who may lack water safety knowledge and awareness.

Life Saving Victoria has found that people from multicultural groups have historically accounted for about 20 per cent of all Victorian drownings. It works closely with a range of multicultural groups to increase their awareness of water and beach safety, through a range of education programs including beach programs and swimming lessons.

Mentone Beach is relatively safe due to generally shallow bars, but it has small currents and troughs. Popular with families from all over Melbourne, it sits at one end of Warrigal Road, backed by Beach Road and 20-metre-high bluffs.

The Foot-Connollys say the most important message for all beachgoers is to swim between the flags, where you will always have a set of eyes watching. Anyone who finds themselves in trouble should raise their arm straight up in the air and hold it still, to avoid giving the impression they are waving.

Greg says if someone does hit difficulty offshore, they have usually underestimated the wind and currents. “If people get into that area, suddenly you’re heading towards Frankston at a very fast rate,” he says.

There are also the odd shark and stingray sightings. “We get the little ones (stingrays) that are just buried in the sand,” says Elise, who is studying zoology and marine biology at Monash University and hopes to volunteer with a turtle conservation program in

Indonesia and an elephant refuge in Thailand. “People will stand on them.”

While few people struggle in the water at Mentone, Caitlin is constantly amazed at the number of adults still exposing themselves to harmful UV rays for hours on end. “You do say ‘You should wear sunscreen’,” she says, but this often falls on deaf ears.

Like they did, the Foot-Connollys say all families should send their children to swimming lessons from a young age. It is the best way, they say, to prevent swimming tragedies.

Water safety is outlined in the Victorian Education Department’s essential learning standards, but it is up to individual schools how they incorporate it. Some use the VICSWIM program, others hire swimming instructors, use YMCA swim programs or have their own qualified swimming teachers.

As a part-time swimming teacher, Daniel, who is studying environmental horticulture at Melbourne University, says a one or two-week block of lessons each year is not enough to develop adequate skills and water awareness. “It will raise awareness but it won’t make a real difference,” he says. \

Summer water safety

l Always swim at a beach patrolled by lifesavers and always swim between the flags.

l Read signs posted at beaches for warnings about hazards such as rips and sudden drops.

l Never swim alone – watch out for your mates and always make sure someone is looking out for you in the water.

l Know your water signals, such as a fist up in the air for a swimmer in trouble.

l Children must be actively supervised around water – not just the occasional glance. Under fives should be within arm’s reach at all times.

l Everyone should learn swimming and water-safety skills – these essential skills could save your life.

A summer holiday is only complete with a visit to the beach. It is a true Australian summer tradition. Sand between you toes, swimming in the ocean,

building sandcastles, sun, surf and sand. Aah, summer!Although this paints a very pretty picture, there

are potential hazards with sun exposure, one of which is dehydration.

It is important to adopt particular behaviours to ensure adequate hydration is maintained.

Children are more vulnerable to heat illness than adults as they have a greater surface area-to-body mass ratio, a lower rate of sweating, different thirst sensitivities and slower rate of acclimatisation to heat.

Why is dehydration dangerous?

Dehydration can range from mild to severe, depending on the degree of fluid loss. There is reduced blood

volume, increased heart rate, increased perception of effort, reduced exercise and movement performance, headache, hot flushes and nausea.

Dehydration also promotes secretion of the stress hormone cortisol.

Mild dehydration is characterised by a loss of 1 per cent to 2 per cent body fluid. Even at this level, cognition, short-term memory and attention can be impacted. Children may also become irritable and unhappy. Fatigue and slowed metabolism may also result in mild dehydration.

In severe dehydration there may be a loss of consciousness, and research suggests death could occur in extreme cases.

You can see now that dehydration is very serious. It impacts the thermoregulatory system, which regulates core body temperature. It also compromises cardiovascular health and the blood-brain barrier,

making it extremely difficult for nutrients and messages to be transported around the body.

It is important to note that if you suspect your child is suffering heat illness or dehydration, seek expert attention as soon as possible.

Rapid rehydration with copious amounts of water may cause a hurried influx of water to the brain. This may be detrimental and is therefore not recommended.

Hydration status

Unfortunately, there is no gold standard to measure hydration status in children. Urinary volume alone is a poor measure.

However, the colour of urine is a suitable indicator. Normal urine colour is a clear to straw colour. Evidence of mild dehydration may be deduced if urine is very dark and resembling the colour of concentrated apple juice.

Water, Water everyWhere …The best and most efficient method to prevent

dehydration in children at the beach is to monitor hydration status. Food and drink suggestions for hydrating

Australia does not have a recommended guideline suggesting how much water children should consume to remain hydrated. However, with the inclusion of high-moisture foods, it is possible to prevent dehydration.

See the list below for the water content of foods commonly consumed at the beach. A high-moisture food contains at least 90 per cent water. However, increasing consumption of foods containing at least 80 per cent water is beneficial.

Foods and their water percentage

90-99% Fat-free milk, cantaloupe, strawberries, watermelon, lettuce, celery, spinach;

80-89% Fruit juice, yoghurt, apples, grapes, oranges, carrots, pears, pineapple;

70-79% Bananas, avocados, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, corn;

60-69% Ice-cream, pasta, salmon, chicken breast;30-39% Bread, bagels, rolls

Eight simple hydration tips for the beach

1 Do not wait until your child is thirsty. Thirst is an early indicator of mild dehydration. It is recommended to consume fluid regularly to prevent thirst;

2 Encourage children to drink water. Plain water is good;

3 Other liquids such as diluted fruit juice are also good options. Too much fruit juice may promote dental caries. However, in moderation, such fluids may promote greater water absorption in the small intestine and more rapid hydration than water alone;

4 Beach visits are an ideal time for consuming high water-containing fruits. Pack a snack box for children containing grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, strawberries, blueberries, mango, peaches and nectarines. These fruits contain beneficial nutrients and they will assist in maintaining a hydrated state. For something different, try freezing a mix of berries to serve at the beach;

5 Vegetables such as cucumber, celery, tomatoes, mixed leaves, capsicum and carrot are good for snacking at the beach. They provide beneficial nutrients but will also assist in maintaining hydration because of their water content. Pack a combination of dips such as tzatziki, humous and beetroot dip for dipping vegetables;

6 Monitor and/or limit processed foods such as the sweet and salty snack variety. These foods contain high amounts of unnecessary sugars and salt. Such ingredients combined with sun exposure may promote dehydration and thirst;

7 Do not give cola and other caffeinated beverages to children. Caffeine is a diuretic that enhances urinary output and fluid loss from the body. Caffeine is also a stimulant that is not appropriate for the young; and

8 Include good-quality carbohydrate-containing foods such as multigrain or sourdough breads. Carbohydrates accelerate and promote water absorption by stimulating water movement. Pack sandwiches with chicken or cheese for added nutrients. Remember to pack food and drink in a cooler bag to prevent premature perishing.

Don’t forget safe sun exposure

Recommendations for remaining hydrated at the beach cannot be made without alluding to general sun safety. In Australia, the sun is exceptionally strong. Safe practices such as avoiding sun exposure during peak sun hours, sitting under shade, applying sun protection lotion, wearing a hat and sunglasses are important for preventing dehydration and to reduce the risk of skin cancer. \

Odysseys & OdditiesD uncan Jones uses emoticons. You might have

expected the eldest child of David Bowie to have inherited some of that glacial, androgynous cool, but Jones’ default setting seems to be an excited

grin – if he’s fashioning a smile with a keyboard, his face is probably similarly adorned.

He’s also keen to share that enthusiasm. In October, Jones took the time to chat to a group of aspiring Melbourne filmmakers via Skype. This may seem unusual for the director of two critically acclaimed films, but Jones knows what it is like to start a climb from the lowest rung.

“I love what I do and I like talking to other people about filmmaking, and particularly about starting up as a filmmaker,” he says, explaining that it took eight years from entering film school to the time he made his first feature.

“It was very frustrating – some people would slam the door in your face and some were very giving of their time and their experience. The person who was most giving to me was (director and Monty Python alumnus) Terry Gilliam, so I’ve always thought that if people look at my movies the way I look at Mr Gilliam’s, I’d be just as responsive and willing to be as out there as he is.”

Jones is 40, but you’d do well to guess it. He most commonly wears a spiky beard under spikier hair over an array of T-shirts. His accent is still English, despite an itinerant childhood that saw him follow his father’s trail of stardust around Europe and across the Atlantic.

At the age of 11, Jones was on the set of The Hunger, a brooding, Tony Scott-directed vampire film that had Bowie locking fangs with Catherine Deneuve; he still recalls being “freaked out” by his father in old-age make-up.

Almost two decades later, Scott was working on a television series of the same name. Jones attended the shoot upon his father’s suggestion, and ended up with two things: Scott as a mentor, and a decision to abandon a PhD in favour of film school, thereby ensuring that Harrison Ford would remain cinema’s pre-eminent Dr Jones.

A polite request to ask questions about his father earns an even more polite reply: “Sure, but I might not answer.” But Jones is happy to discuss the role Bowie played in nurturing his interests – while he might have been absent much of the time, his support was not.

“He was probably more aware that I was likely to be interested in film than I was. He didn’t push me into anything, but I think he was always aware that that was where my heart lies,” Jones says.

There are charming stories of father and son making movies using Star Wars and Smurfs figurines. When this is brought up, Jones giggles a little, then fishes around for a cute photograph of him installed under a table, surrounded by action figures, concentration etched into his young brow as he makes one-stop pictures with an eight-millimetre camera.

Inevitably, it was the movies that tied these plot threads into a metaphorical bow at the 2009 premiere of Jones’ first feature, Moon. As far as Jones knew, his father was unable to attend – so when Bowie showed up unannounced, it was an event worthy of celluloid. The delight remains fresh.

“It was fantastic,” Jones says. “I was really not sure if he was going to be able to make it. That Sundance screening was definitely the biggest thing that had ever happened to me in my life, and to have him there and to

be able to just show him that I had found a passion for something – I really felt like I had found what I wanted to do with my life.”

Seldom do personal epiphanies receive acclaim as widespread as Moon. It snagged awards, including a BAFTA and a Hugo; journalists swiftly connected the extraterrestrial predilections of father and son; and Jones was suddenly in the running for projects with profiles in the stratosphere, including the Christopher Nolan-led reboot of Superman.

Jones didn’t get that gig, but he remains proud of his debut – so much so that even in the era of the director’s cut, with endless new versions of sci-fi staples such as Blade Runner and Star Wars, he rules out taking another trip to Moon.

“No. Absolutely not,” he says. “Everyone that was involved was pushing as hard as they could with the resources that we had. Anything that we would go back and do would undermine just how much of ourselves we gave to make that movie.”

Moon was made with a meagre $5 million budget, meaning that most of its props had to be sold to help with costs. There’s a robot in the film, in the grand tradition of 2001’s HAL 9000 – and Jones has spent the last little while trying to hunt him down: “I don’t know where he is! GERTY was one of the things that was sold, and we never found out where. There’s a story in that, the lost robot!”

Part of the film’s appeal – and the reason it looks and feels timeless – is its practical design philosophy, a preference for models over digital trickery. Moon’s science fiction also has a healthy dose of fact, inspired by Robert Zubrin’s Entering Space, a book Jones describes as a “very practical guide to space exploration”. Even NASA was sufficiently intrigued to request a screening.

Jones’ next film was strictly high concept – a twisty thriller called Source Code, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan. Like Moon, too much discussion will give away the plot, especially the conclusion – but it’s a finale that Jones feels strongly enough about to explain via Twitter and at public screenings.

“I fought for Source Code not to have a Hollywood ending. And then for a few people to think that that was kind of a happy Hollywood ending, I was like, ‘No it’s not! You completely misunderstand the point’,” he says.

“I get a little bit defensive on those kind of things. You hope that your film will stand up in its own right and that you won’t need to talk about it, but I would rather have people discuss a film after they watch it instead of completely forgetting about it as they leave the theatre.”

His films prompt debate because they are thematically rich – among their shared premises are individuals rebelling against authority, and the exploitations that big business or big government wreak on ordinary people. Jones breaks in as this point is made, his voice as dry as a Martian canal. “In science fiction those things never happen,” he intones. There is laughter.

Jones denies being aware of the global appetite for revolution when he was making either film – indeed, when he isn’t providing inadvertent social commentary, he spends much of his time in other worlds.

He says “big gamer” is an accurate description, went on record to express his jealousy that Sam Raimi would be directing a film version of the role-playing game World of Warcraft, and has most recently sunk hour upon countless hour into another computer

duncan Jones has gone from being Zowie Bowie to exploring the cutting

“As a writer and/or director you have a certain responsibility to give the audience enough information for them to wrap their head around an idea without giving them a lecture,” he says.

“The real danger in science fiction is that you end up explaining things instead of telling a story. With both Moon and Source Code we were playing in that grey area. I think we’ve gotten the balance right in those films – I’ll definitely be pushing the boundary again on my new film so we’ll see how it goes.”

Ah, the new film! Jones is being terribly secretive

about this. He says this new project is the film he’s always wanted to make. This isn’t his long-gestating project with a silent protagonist, called Mute; that’s been turned into a graphic novel. (When pressed for more details, Jones does a passable impression of the title.)

Nor will it have an extra dimension: “Nothing has convinced me that 3D is worth the limitations that it imposes upon you as a filmmaker. I think it takes you a step out of the movie instead of putting you into it.” What is certain, however, is that Jones will be moving away from the claustrophobic feel that characterised his first two features.

“Those films worked as steps in a career to making a certain type of movie, but I don’t want to make tight, limited-environment films for the rest of my life. If you have a big idea and a small budget, keeping the environment small lets you keep the production values on screen,” he says.

“(The new film) is a script I’ve written; it’s a story I’ve come up with. It’s got some big science-fiction ideas and it’s got a richly realised science-fiction world. And it looks like we’re going to have the budget to do it the way I want to.”

This is probably a good time to tell you Jones’ Skype status: “Film #3 is a doozy!” And it doesn’t take an emoticon to picture Jones perched over a keyboard, grinning as he writes. \

“He was probably more aware that I was interested in film than I was.” JonES on BoWIE

role-playing game, Skyrim. Does this cut into his scriptwriting time?

“I’m sure my girlfriend would say it does, but I think it’s a good balance. I really enjoy films and books and games where you’re thrown into entirely realised and different worlds,” Jones says.

“No matter how I experience it, being shown just how complete those worlds can be in those different media gives me an excitement and an enthusiasm to do it myself. I’ll bounce back and forth between writing and watching and playing games, and my excitement for other people’s work is what helps galvanise my enthusiasm for my own.”

Jones has some experience making games, and is well aware of the medium’s ability to deliver a narrative – and to earn as much as a theatrical release.

Nevertheless, he thinks his chosen medium was the correct one.

“I worked in the (game) industry for about a year and a half, and I had an education in the layers of bureaucracy and how games get made,” Jones says. “It’s difficult to be a film auteur these days, but I think you have a better chance of doing that than of being a games auteur.” After a moment he adds: “Also, I can’t program to save my life.”

Speaking of fully realised worlds, has the post-9/11 resurgence of high-concept fantasy and science fiction (consider the success of the Lord of the Rings films, as well as successful reboots of decades-old properties such as Star Trek and potentially risky ventures such as Inception) primed audiences to accept fare that may have been thought to be too complicated in the past? Jones certainly thinks so.

melbourne’s best property

p ortsea has no shortage of large, glamorous beach houses. But Woniona goes one better. It is every bit the striking,

big property, to be sure, but it is also the consummate family house. It’s

decorated in a casual and warm way that would easily earn a place in most designer magazines. A collection of shells here, a timber table there, sensible sisal carpet among the polished floorboards and the bookcase just so give this place a designer edge. Even the goldfish circling in two giant bowls on the kitchen bench seem happy to add to the atmosphere.

Summer, autumn, winter or spring, this is a house for all seasons. For starters, there are seven separate deck and courtyard areas. A marvellous outdoor entertainment deck with built-in wood-fired pizza oven and weatherproof clear-plastic roller blinds creates an enviable outdoor living area. The wind can be shut out by closing the smart louvres in this upper-level oasis, but

you never feel hemmed in. That is the sort of detail you find at Woniona.

It’s also a sportsman’s house and a house for the family that loves sport, as this one does. Take your pick from tennis on the full-sized mod-grass court, swimming in the pool, which is surrounded by a lovely sun deck, or working out in the gym. It is all on hand and relatively nearby, unlike some houses, where you have to traipse miles from living area to sports area.

In the gym, a framed brown-and-gold guernsey and framed payslip for $800 from 1971 reveal a little of Woniona’s modern history. Its owners are former 1971 Hawthorn premiership player Bruce Stevenson and his wife, Julia, a passionate interior decorator, who is responsible for the look of the house. And, yes $800 was B. Stevenson’s player payment for that season 40 years ago. A framed picture of the premiership team occupies a more prominent place in the downstairs living area.

The Stevensons bought Woniona, set on 2763 square metres, seven years ago as their family residence. It

is surrounded by other luxurious properties in the Cheviot/Wyuna region. The children are now grown up, so the family is preparing to downsize.

There are several living and entertainment areas, starting with a downstairs family room where sliding doors lead to the deck and swimming pool. Bedrooms grouped nearby share a bathroom with stone finishes. The main bedroom, which has a sliding door to a private courtyard, has a big, white, fully tiled en suite, with a dual stone vanity and double shower.

This house is made to explore, and there is something new and exciting at every turn. The staircase leads up to a large upper floor, where there is a big dining area and a casual sitting room at one end. This room, with its built-in wall unit for television, storage and memorabilia, opens seamlessly to the deck with its stainless steel wood-fired pizza oven and barbecue and gas fireplace. The name Sir Roy Grounds is synonymous with some of Australia’s finest architecture. As one of the leaders in the modernist movement, his houses were often celebrated for their strong, solid lines, clever

use of light and experimentations with pure geometry.Iluka is no exception. Designed to seamlessly open onto

the coastal landscape, this cedar-clad three-storey house is almost entirely camouflaged by its natural surroundings.

Landscaped front gardens with lush plants, a water feature and an atrium-style pavilion create a tranquil atmosphere. The house cleverly blurs the lines between interior and exterior design. A fresh white colour palette, polished timber floors and floor-to-ceiling windows ensure a feeling of openness and outdoor accessibility.

Toorak comes to Sorrento at this new, state-of-the art property by Dean Dugdale Developments. The difference is that the beach is 100 metres away and the light-filled house makes it feel like summer

all year round. From the upper-level deck, the broad expanse of Port Phillip Bay forms the background to the view of the Sorrento Sailing Club. The double-storey house has the latest finishes, from limed-oak floors to white Calacatta marble, designer block work and polished concrete. The four bathrooms, including two en suites, are elegant in charcoal-grey and white marble. The main living area and main bedroom are on the first floor and cleverly placed skylights let shafts of light into every corner. A heavy, three-metre-tall front door opens into the foyer that steps down to a family room of minimalist style and polished concrete floors, which in turn opens to a covered terrace with swimming pool. Another bedroom and en suite occupy a wing on the ground floor. \ maria harris

Occasionally, just occasionally, Portsea offers real estate that won’t set you back the customary multimillion-dollar figure. This house, on a traditional quarter-acre (about 1000 square metres) block, is about two

minutes’ walk to the shops and the Portsea front beach. Tipped to sell for more than $1.1 million on a walk-in/walk-out basis, the terrific four-bedroom, two-bathroom timber house has been in the one family since being built by local builder John Clarke 32 years ago. “We were determined to make it easy to maintain,” says the vendor. And they succeeded. Timber-lined interiors, very much of the home’s era, include a separate study or second living room and large living room with open-plan kitchen. Wide glass sliding doors open the living room to a substantial north-facing deck that overlooks the lawn and garden. At one end of the living room, an open fireplace, which burns wood, takes the chill off the colder nights. The two bathrooms, are in pristine condition. \ maria harris

We love it\ p42

W here t o l i v e \ cov er s t ory

W hen the current owners saw this Cape Cod-style house, it was love at first sight. From the outside at least. The

interior was another story – utterly unloveable, even neglected. But when

the husband is a builder and the wife is a dedicated homemaker and committed decorator, the scene was set for big changes.

Fast-forward 19 years and this house is still a picture-perfect design, but with a suite of extras and a grand extension. It is a ripper of a house. The street appeal is undeniable – a circular lawn with gravel courtyard and circular driveway. The Cape Cod exterior with two dormer windows protruding from the roof still looks a treat.

Built 50 years ago, the house was extended by the vendors in 2001 so that it now has everything for the modern family – including the much-coveted, indoor/outdoor entertainment area and swimming pool. The pool, with a sandstone-paved surround, has been the scene of many a party and is well set up with a covered outdoor entertainment and barbecue area.

The interior builds on the ’50s original but makes a very stylish 21st-century house. The entry has been reconfigured so that the main bedroom is now off the entry hall. It has sliding doors to the en suite bathroom and the walk-in wardrobe. Also off the entry, double glass doors open to the formal lounge, which has views over the front garden. With drapes and swags at the white-framed picture windows and polished hardwood floors, this is an elegant retreat for parents or formal gatherings.

Still in this part of the house, the powder room and laundry with external entry are side by side. Next to it, sliding doors lead to the study, where french doors lead to a balcony that overlooks the swimming pool.

The extension broke through the original side wall of the brick house, and from here the owners let their imagination take over to create a vast family domain with living/dining and kitchen. The family living zone, with its open fireplace and stone mantelpiece, takes up a large chunk of space, with the meals area just near the kitchen.

This kitchen is so fresh, so pristine, that it looks – like the rest of the house – as if it were built yesterday, not 10 years ago. A wide granite-topped island bench separates the kitchen from the meals area. On three sides of the kitchen, pale-blue/grey cabinets contrast with the black granite surfaces. Above the bench, glass-fronted cupboards provide excellent storage, and at one end of the kitchen the pantry also has a glass panel in the door. A wide stainless steel oven and cooktop should make large-scale cooking easy.

Wrought-iron light fittings, gleaming timber floors and a wall of windows with white plantation shutters

are elegant finishes to this stylish and very practical family area. It also has a door that opens directly into the double garage.

Details matter here. The builder went to great pains to source second-hand tiles to match the original roof tiles; painting and finishes are perfect and this house smacks of constant care and cleaning.

“Some of the fittings may look a little over the top, but this house looks warm and comfortable,” say the vendors.

“It’s been the best 19 years of our lives. The house is so full of memories, but the boys are now 18 and 21 and don’t seem to be home as often so we have decided to move closer to the city and downsize a tad.”

The white dado panelling on the staircase is reinforced in the upstairs bedrooms and a games room or fourth bedroom. The two bedrooms at the front of the house are large enough for double beds, but still have the endearing picture-book quality of the attic rooms of the Cape Cod house. There is also a bathroom with shower and bath on this level and a separate toilet. \

While time has brought more neighbours to this leafy pocket of Eltham, the peace and quiet have not gone away.

From the main bedroom of this impressive four-bedroom residence you can barely make out another house among the tree-cloaked hills.

The steep front driveway is a small price to pay for an elevated position that allows you to wake each day to such lovely views. Despite the steep rise, this 1026-square metre block is surprisingly flat up top.

The house has been laid out almost entirely on one level. Only the back wing, used for kids’ accommodation – which has two bedrooms, a family bathroom and a laundry – steps away from the main living spaces.

Much of the backyard is also flat. A gentle slope runs down to an oversized paved patio and pool area. The pool is a good 10 metres long and surrounded by a large deck, ideal for sunbaking.

An established border of trees ensures this family oasis is 100 per cent private. This time of year entertaining is best outside, but there is more than enough space inside during the cooler months.

The kitchen, renovated seven years ago, overlooks a large family hub.

There is also a front lounge with all the hallmarks of 1970s Eltham architecture: exposed brick fireplace and soaring ceilings lined in timber beams. \ LIAM CARTER

Two-bedroom properties often come as apartments or townhouses where the living space is tight and the neighbours are very close. But here the two bedrooms are part of what is a fully detached and stylishly

renovated house on a good-sized block. The red clinker-brick shell gives this house instant character and street presence. The façade, softened by a hedge and multiframe windows, is set well back from the street. Like many of the original houses of the area, it has a long side driveway leading to a detached single garage that could easily be converted into a studio. In the house, timber floorboards line the hall and the open living hub. They complement the exposed brick fireplace and timber-clad kitchen, which has Smeg appliances, an island bench and a striking timber range. French doors lead out to a four by three metre deck overlooking the private yard with shed. You can also access the backyard from the oversized laundry. \ LIAM CARTER

This property couldn’t be in a suburb with a more fitting name. From the open lounge room of this 1960s house, the views are jaw dropping. One wall has a picture window framing views of the Banyule flats. Another

has floor-to-ceiling windows offering a vista across the neighbouring suburbs. The property owes its views to the elevated position on the high side of Warren Road and some clever architecture that places all living spaces up top, leaving three of four bedrooms down below. They also have expansive windows, bringing natural light and garden views inside. The property has been recently renovated and combines plush carpets and a neutral palette with plenty of character from the 1960s. Some timber wall cladding adds the right amount of retro charm. The kitchen has been stylishly updated and has a new Bellini dishwasher and Electrolux oven. The upstairs bathroom has also been brought into the 21st century. \ LIAM CARTER
