Hydro Ottawa has now delivered its dynamic education program to more than 155,000 elementary school students in Ottawa. The interactive presentations include information about energy conservation and how to stay safe near electrical hazards, including what to do when encountering downed power lines.Hydro Ottawa offers two age-appropriate presentations free of charge to elementary schools in our service territory. For younger students from JK to Grade 4, Wires the safety puppet engages them with safety and conservation messages. The presentation to students from Grades 5 to 8 includes more detail, and uses a variety of other kinds of teaching aids, such as an interactive display of a miniature village illustrating how to identify electrical hazards. According to the Canadian Institute of Health Information, between 1998 and 2005, 633 children in Canada suffered serious injury due to electrical contact. Our Electricity, Safety and Conservation program helps students identify electrical dangers and fosters a culture of safety in our community.

Teaching Electricity Safety and Conservation

On May 16, Hydro Ottawa and Christie Lake Kids launched their partnership and announced their plans for a new leadership centre for youth.The Hydro Ottawa Sustainable Youth Leadership Centre, to be built at Belle Island on Christie Lake, will be used by Christie Lake Kids’ Leaders in Training Program for 13 to 17 year olds.

Campers at the new facility will see firsthand a number of alternate power sources and sustainable technologies, including solar cells, a human-powered pump, and a gravity pressurized water system that draws water from the lake to a water tower.Christie Lake Kids has been working in Ottawa for 90 years providing recreation and skills-building programs for young people whose families may not have the means for them to attend camp. Darnell Kennedy, a former “Leader in Training”, shared his own Christie Lake Kids success story at the launch. Kennedy had his first experience with Christie Lake Kids when one of his teachers recommended him for the camp program. He loved it so much he spent five years as a camper and has been a volunteer for the last five years. Kennedy said he is excited for the opportunities the new sustainable facility will hold for future Leaders-in-Training,

Doors Open OttawaHydro Ottawa once again participated in the Doors Open Ottawa, opening up our hydroelectric Generating Station No. 2 at Chaudière Falls to the public on June 1 and 2. We see this as an excellent opportunity to share cultural heritage with the public, and aspects of the facility which have been historically preserved for over 100 years. By opening up the building to the public, we are offering a unique way to engage people in learning about how the complex electricity system operates on a day-to-day basis, and why Hydro Ottawa remains active in investing in hydro power.

Summer Energy Conservation TipsMinimize preheating your oven. Aside from pastries and bread, most food does not need the oven to be preheated. Clothes washers are most energy-efficient when fully loaded. But be careful not to overload your washer, either. That can cause technical problems and reduce the washer’s effectiveness and lifespan.Did you know that clothes dryers can use, in some cases, somewhere between 10 to 28 times more energy than washing machines? One of the easiest ways to save on your energy bill is to hang your clothes to dry, or simply run your dryer less often.Cleaning your lint trap after each load of laundry not only prevents fires, but can also lead to less energy consumption. According to Natural Resources Canada, a full lint trap can cause your dryer to consume up to 30 percent more energy.Unplug coffeemakers, toasters and microwaves when you’re not using them.

Summer Time-Of-Use Periods in EffectEach year on May 1 and November 1, the time-of-use periods change province-wide. During the summer months, the highest energy prices are in the afternoon when air conditioning use is greatest. As of May 1, 2013, the on-peak periods for electricity are now between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mid-peak periods during the summer months are in the morning (7 a.m. to 11 a.m.) and evening (5 p.m. to 7 p.m.). And, the cheapest electricity is always at night (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.), on weekends and statutory holidays. Shifting some consumption, such as setting the delay on the dishwasher or doing laundry on the weekend, away from the higher price periods will help customers save money.

Hydro electricity is a cost-effective form of renewable energy which makes up nearly a quarter of Ontario’s power supply. It has very low emissions compared to other forms of generation. The recent purchase of three additional hydroelectric plants this fall has more than doubled Hydro Ottawa’s hydroelectric generating capacity, enabling us to generate enough clean energy to power some 28,000 households a year.

The Chaudière Generating Station No. 2 was open to the public as part of Doors Open Ottawa.

Electricity Sector News

The 2013–14 Provincial Budget includes announcements and updates on the following items related to the energy sector:

Review of the Ontario Clean Energy BenefitThe budget committed to a review of its benefit and tax programs, including the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit “to ensure they remain fair and affordable”. The Ontario Clean Energy Benefit provides a 10% reduction on the total electricity bill for residential and small business customers. The Ministry of Finance will undertake consultations with the electrical industry and other stakeholders in the coming months.

Seeking Federal Support for East-West Transmission Grid The government restated its commitment from last year’s budget to encourage the Federal Government for support in enabling the appropriate regulatory environment for an east-west transmission grid that would transmit electricity across provincial borders which would help in the development of new, larger scale renewable projects.

Benchmarking Updates on Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and Hydro OneAs announced in last year’s budget, the government launched an independent benchmarking review of OPG and Hydro One. This year’s budget provides an update on their “transformation initiatives” which include:• OPG has reduced its operations headcount by more than

1,000 and is targeting an additional 1,000 headcount by the end of 2015;

• OPG has reported operating, maintenance and administration costs are $133 million lower in 2012 compared to 2011;

• Hydro One’s operating, maintenance and administration costs are $21 million lower in 2012 compared to 2011; and

• Hydro One’s new customer information system is in the process of being implemented in 2013 with expected savings of $24 million over two years.

2013–14 Ontario Budget Announced

On April 16, the Hon. Bob Chiarelli, Minister of Energy announced that he instructed the Ministry of Energy to work with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), Ontario Power Authority (OPA) and key agencies to undergo a formal review of their Long Term Energy Plan by updating their supply and demand forecasts, last done in December 2010. This review is to be completed within six months.The Ministry will undertake a consultation process to gather feedback from all interested parties seeking feedback in three key areas:• Ontario’s Supply Mix: where and how power should be

produced in the future • Conservation: building a culture of conservation • Procurement of Renewable Energy In his speech, the Minister reiterated his pledge that the “government will not legislate forced consolidation or amalgamation of Local Distribution Companies (LDCs),” but added that he has called on the LDCs to provide their advice to the Ministry on realizing savings through voluntary consolidations and efficiencies.
