When we think of our beloved New York, we see a city that is alive with light. From the romantic glow atop the Empire State Building to the twinkle in the park trees to the blinged out crystal New Year’s Eve ball, our city is never dull or in the dark. Paris may be the City of Light, but nowhere in the world truly sparkles like New York City. Naturally, every wedding sparkles too. The icy beading on a princess gown, the shimmer on an invitation, and the ever popular sparklers guests wave as they say good night to the newlyweds, are a few of the glittering details that bring joy to a wedding. For winter, a time when Mother Nature is a bit stingy on the light, we decided to focus on all the shiny ele-ments we love in weddings. First and foremost is the diamond engagement ring. We picked our favorite cuts and settings, and curated a definitive jewelry guide to where to shop for your engagement ring, wed-ding bands and wedding-day jewelry. For brides who want to shimmer as they twirl across the dance floor, we pulled the season’s most stunning designer gowns that sparkle from Alon Livne to Mark Zunino. Of course, nowhere in New York shines as bright as Broadway. We are delighted to share the wedding of Tony Award winner Patina Miller and David Mars. So He Put a Ring On ItYou’re engaged! Congratulations! Now that there’s a shiny new ring on your left hand there are a few to-do’s that brides-to-be must check off their list to ensure it stays sparkly, secure and, most importantly, insured.

If your fiancé hasn’t already, call your homeowners insurance company to add your en-gagement ring to the policy. And read the fine print. Some policies only cover the ring if it was lost or stolen in your home. If that’s the case…

For extra security, you can purchase jewelry-specific insurance from companies such as Jewelers Mutual and Perfect Circle, which will cover your loss if your ring is lost or stolen outside your home.

While your ring is sure to be sparkly as soon as it’s out of the box, it will get dull over time so get an at-home ring cleaning solution and give it a bath every few months, and definitely before your bridal shower.

Pick up a stylish ring holder (like this one from Kate Spade) to place your ring in for safe keeping at home. You shouldn’t wash the dishes or shower with it on because the soap will dull the shine. And you definitely don’t want it to go down the drain. It has been known to happen.

The week before the big day make a visit to the jeweler and have your ring professionally cleaned so it sparkles like the top of the Chrysler building in all of your wedding photos.

When you’re ready to shop for wedding bands, make sure that the ring you buy fits comfortably and is complementary to your engagement ring.

If you want to engrave something on each other’s band think of something meaningful that you can write in such a small space. The date, your first names or married monogram are classic options.

ester + stephen Knowing Ester wasn’t very fond of big surprises, Ste-phen decided to make their proposal quiet and person-al. He brought her to St. Catherine’s Park on the Upper East Side because it represented the hard times in his life when she stuck by his side, and reinforced their strong re-lationship. Even though it was snowing, she agreed to take a walk in the park. When they passed a bench, Stephen got down on one knee and proposed with a Ring Pop, gold band, and diamond earrings, which she said was “exactly what she wanted.” The meaningful, intimate proposal was followed by a photo shoot in the snow, which Ester said made for great photos!

lauren + mike Lauren and Mike worked together, so when planning his proposal Mike sent her a calendar invite to her work e-mail asking her to be his “arm for the night.” She accepted, but didn’t know what the plans were. When she pressed him for infor-mation, he didn’t budge. That day, Mike took Lauren to the place they had their first date, The Kimberly Hotel, where a private table was set with champagne. He got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. After a quick en-gagement shoot in the city, the couple arrived at Mad 46, where their friends and family were waiting for them. Before heading home, Mike said he had to run back to the hotel for something. For his final surprise of the night, he had booked the Empire Suite for them to celebrate some more.

emily + paul Emily and Paul had their first date on the High Line, so he thought it would be the perfect place for a surprise proposal. He had a friend of theirs, a photographer, ask Emily if they would pose for a couple’s portrait shoot that he could add to his portfolio. She was sure she could convince Paul, not realizing it was all part of his grand proposal plan. As soon as they arrived for “the shoot,” with

the photographer hiding in the bushes, Paul proposed. Following the proposal, Paul brought his bride-to-be to Hogs & Heifers (another place they went to on their first date) for a celebratory tequila shot, followed by visits to several other special spots. Since he couldn’t take her to every meaningful one, he took her to a helipad where both of their families celebrated their engagement with a helicopter ride around the city. After the tour, Paul’s brother made dinner for everyone at his restaurant, Lupa. The couple ended the celebration with drinks with their closest friends at Houston Hall. Emily said of the day, “It couldn’t have been more perfect!”

stacey + pat The two college friends began their romance after they grad-uated from the University of Connecticut. They dated for five years, spending summers on the water and winters on the slopes. When they moved in together Pat decided they should celebrate by going out to dinner, and when they returned home that night he proposed. After making excited phone calls to family, there was a knock at their door and standing in the hallway were both of their families who had traveled near and far to celebrate with them. She said of the night, “It was perfection.”

nikki + trent Trent’s proposal to Nikki came as a big surprise since she lives in New York and he’s based in Omaha, Nebraska. When Nikki arrived at Lincoln Center for what she thought was a photo shoot for her friend, she was given an empty basket, a bag from Tiffany’s and told to walk in a specific direction. Along the way strangers, and a few familiar faces too, handed her a white rose. The trail led to Central Park where she saw Trent stand-ing at the top of a snow-covered staircase. He had her open her first gift, a clock necklace from Tiffany & Co., with a note that read, “this is for time.” Then he pulled out a ring box and said, “this is for eternity.” The proposal was followed by a surprise dinner with family and friends at Tav-ern on the Green, where Nikki’s father gave her a bouquet that rounded the total of white roses to 100.

elizabeth + zack Zack surprised Elizabeth with a trip to New York, where she had no clue as to what their itinerary would entail. After arriving, the couple enjoyed an intimate dinner, wandered through Times Square and saw Wicked on Broadway. More exciting activities would take

place, including a trip to the National Museum of the American Indian and a visit to Central Park. While walking through the park, the couple stopped on Bow Bridge, where Zack told Elizabeth how much he loved and cared for her, and asked her to marry him. She said yes!

Stacy's Top 10 Proposal-Planning TipsEnsure you'll have the greatest proposal story ever

Follow @howheasked for daily doses of proposal moments and engagement rings.

Make it heartfelt. This is a moment the two of you will remember for the rest of your lives. Get down on one knee and tell her why you love her and want to spend the rest of your life with her. Be sure to make eye contact and use her full name as you ask her to marry you.

Ask permission. If your girlfriend is close with her family, or any member in particular, tell them about your plans to propose. It will mean so much to her knowing that you spoke with them.

Propose in a way that speaks to you as a couple. Since you know each other better than anybody, you’ll want a pro-posal that's well suited to the two of you. For example, if your girlfriend is reserved and hates being the center of attention, don’t plan a flash mob proposal in the middle of Times Square.

Pick a meaningful spot. Find a way to celebrate your love doing what you like to do together.

Incorporate what she wants. If you know it's important to her to look her best for the moment she gets engaged, do your best to ensure she has a manicure and is dressed up without making her suspicious. A great way to do this is to get her girlfriend to say she's in need of some pampering and have her bring her along.

Hire a photographer. Capturing her surprised reaction will give you amazing photos to look at for years to come. Plus, photographers will be able to make suggestions as to what time to propose outdoors for the best lighting and great locations you can take engagement photos afterwards.

Capture it on video too. It's so hard to remember all the sweet things your partner says when he's proposing because you are so caught up in the moment. Take a video so you can replay it, and share it with family and friends.

Celebrate with family and friends.If they're not directly involved in your proposal, find a way to cel-ebrate with them after. She will want to speak with everyone to share the news and a great way to do this is to gather everyone at a restaurant, surprise party or at home. Can’t get the long dis-tance family there? Have them gather together wherever they may be so they can be in one room when she Facetimes them.

Have a backup plan. If you are worried that your soon-to-be fiancée may take awhile to get ready tell her your "date" starts a bit earlier than it really does. If she starts running “late,” you won’t act too stressed and give away the surprise.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If planning the proposal is stressing you out ask family and friends, who can keep a secret, for help or hire a professional. Proposal planners can make suggestions, scope out locations, and put you in touch with vendors to ensure everything goes according to plan.

Ask any wedding planner, floral designer, or even a celebrity, and they’ll all tell you how important lighting is. Often overlooked on wedding checklists, lighting can help enhance your wedding’s design and decor by highlighting various elements from the altar to the dance floor. “Lighting is such an important element to pay attention to as it can change the entire design,” explains wedding and event designer Preston Bailey. “Make sure the lighting professionals know what your expectations are and that you monitor the process.” When walking through your ceremony and reception venues talk to your wedding planner and event designer about what in the room you want to highlight or hide, and what the focal

points should be. You can put pin spots over the centerpieces, use uplighting to feature archi- tectural details or customize the dance floor by shining your wedding logo or monogram on it with a gobo. You can also use candles, lanterns and sparklers to light up the night. “Candlelight creates a glow that isn’t harsh,” says Tamra Sanford, owner of Ever Swoon. “It makes for a warm, romantic and intimate environment.” Whatever venue your ceremony and reception are set in, keep the lighting of the space at the forefront of your plans. In addition to illumi-nating the room it will set the mood whether you’re going for a romantic dinner or a wild dance party.

The overwhelming trend at Bridal Fashion Week in New York was nearly naked. Some of those poor models barely had a stitch on! But looking past all the skin and barely-there dresses, a bit of sparkle caught our eye. Beading and crystals have always been dominant, but the beading this season had more of a shimmer than a glare. Refined icy crystals took the place of oversized crystal nuggets and jewels. “The message was loud and clear at bridal market this season," explains Selina Howard, bridal stylist and creative director of Vainglorious Brides, “sparkle could possibly be the new white. The use of fine beading

creates a subtle but luminous shimmer where you can't tell where one bead ends and the other begins." Beth Chapman, owner of Beth Chapman Styling in Connecticut agrees. “There was a shift towards more texture including delicate, icy beading. This type of beading is perfect for the bride who wants a little delicate shimmer on her wedding day or even for the bride who never thought she wanted sparkle! Patina had found success on stage and screen, but sensed some-thing was missing: someone

to share it with. Asking friends for advice, her co-star in Sister Act suggested she join eHarmony. Around the same time David was getting the same suggestions from his colleagues. After seeing her photo and profile, David messaged her and the two de-cided to meet for drinks one afternoon because, as Patina explained, she’s a singer and works nights. At the end of their first date he dropped her off at the Broadway Theatre, and once he saw her likeness on billboards he realized his date wasn’t just a singer, but a Broadway star. In addition to her role in Sister Act, she has also starred in the films The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and 2, and in CBS's Madam Secretary. As their relationship moved forward so did Patina’s career. One night Da-vid had a dream that Patina was thanking him in an acceptance speech at the Tony Awards, for a role in Pippin and in it she referred to David as “her fiancé.” Soon after he encouraged her to audition for Pippin. She got the part and on opening night David proposed. And did the rest of David’s dream ring true? Yes, Patina won the Tony. And she did thank her fiancé.

As for the wedding, leave it to an entertainer to have a creative, untraditional and enter-taining ceremony. When Patina first heard Pharrell’s Happy, she immediately knew it needed to be incorporated into her wedding. “It says everything about how I feel about David, and about our whole celebration,” Patina told Twirl New York. When she first heard it, she couldn’t stop dancing, and wanted this feeling to come across from the very beginning of her ceremony. While guests waited for the ceremony to start, the bride’s friend, Leslie Odom, Jr., started singing Happy, accompanied by the Brass Kitchen Band. Other members of the bridal party soon joined in and sang as they took their places at the front of the altar where the ceremony was to take place at The Foundry. The upbeat song set the mood for the rest of the event, which was a festive and fun affair with a mix of southern, whimsical details and sleek, city touches. “It was remarkable to be a part of their day,” says their wedding planner,

Tamra Sanford of Ever Swoon. “We were creating an interactive experience. The atmo-sphere was one of love and celebration, but it was warm and intimate at the same time.” For her wedding gown, Patina chose a ro-mantic lace dress by Monique Lhuillier with a corseted bodice and open back. For the cer-emony she added a full tulle over skirt, which she also wore as the newlyweds led their guests around Long Island City in a traditional New Orleans second line. Before the reception, she removed the skirt to reveal a fitted lace sheath, accented with a crystal embellished belt. “Patina was one of my all-time favorite brides,” shares Mark Ingram, owner of the Mark Ingram Atelier. “She was so confident and classy. Both of her bridal looks suited her perfectly, elegant for her ceremony and a sexy siren at the reception! Patina’s ensemble was the perfect example of how a bride can successfully pull off two very different looks with one gown.”

To get the party started, after the couple’s first dance, professional break dancers took to the newly created dance floor to the delight of the crowd. Unbeknownst to Patina, David had been taking break dancing lessons. He invited her to his last class and she couldn’t believe how amazingly well he performed. “He always says I am the performer in the family,” adds Patina, “but he was so good. He did a great job!” For the wedding’s decor, Patina chose Poppies & Posies to create organic and free flowing floral arrangements of seasonal blooms that included garden roses, dusty millers, blush ra-nunculus and other greenery set in both small and large vases. Votive and pale blue pillar candles added a warm, romantic glow under the clear-topped reception tent.

Above all, the couple wanted their wedding day to feel like a family reunion, where all their relatives and friends would come together in an atmosphere of love and celebration. “From my Carnegie Mellon friends to David’s hometown friends, everyone was dancing with each other. I wanted everyone to mesh and they did,” Patina remembers. “Everyone was so happy and energetic. There was dancing from start to finish, and it was better than I ever expected. The place was on fire. It was electric.”

For the menu, the couple worked with Brooklyn based Cobblestone Catering to create a delicious meal that included a mix of their hometown favorites. During cocktail hour blackened trout po’ boys, chicken and waffles and petit baby back ribs were a few of the delectables that were passed. For the main course, guests chose between pan-roasted branzino and a mushroom-crusted filet mignon, with a side of pan roasted Brussels sprouts and sweet yam cobbler. While the couple chose to cut a naked wedding cake from Momofuku Milk Bar, the dessert menu also included a range of sweets: banana bread pudding, bourbon pecan tarts, apple tarte tartin, mini red velvet and blackout cupcakes, and peanut butter fudge brownies. And as a surprise for David, Patina ordered a Carvel Fudgie the Whale groom’s cake, his favorite.
