The European Green Capital - Essen 2017, the Ruhr Regional Association and the KlimaExpo.NRW welcome you to the TWINS Conference Ruhr - Cities in Climate Change. From 6 to 8 November, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein in Essen turns into a meeting place for local climate experts from more than 20 countries.

Up to 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions are generated in cities. In

order to significantly reduce CO2 emissions today and in the future, they have to face the challenges of climate change in the coming years and decades. Local experts are asked to identify potential, develop innovative ideas, plan and implement concrete solutions.

We would like to provide you with new inspiration for this urgent task. During the three conference days you will have the opportunity to connect with peers and experts, talk about specific local challenges and solutions and get to know the Metropole Ruhr with its diverse projects on climate protection and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The conference marks the beginning of a long-term cooperation between the participating cities and sets the foundation for the Urban Transitions Alliance, a global city network organized by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.

The focus is on the international exchange of the so-called TWINS cities on climate protection and sustainable urban development.

We hope you will enjoy three days of inspiring lectures, professional networking and exciting excursions.

Conference hosts

The TWINS Conference Ruhr - Cities in Climate Change is co-organized by the Ruhr Regional Association, the KlimaExpo.NRW and the European Green Capital 2017, the City of Essen. Each partner is responsible for the planning, organization and implementation of one of the three days of the event.

Ruhr Metropolis, Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site and European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 – Essen is all of these things. And this year, Essen is the European Green Capital. The successful history of its transformation to the greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia provides a role model of structural change for many cities in Europe. Essen has transformed from the pre-industrial convent with its abbess gardens and emperor parks to a pulsating coal and steel town to today’s metropolis with a green heart. Throughout this process, Essen has been and is being carried into its green future by good ideas, sustainable urban planning and the commitment of members of the public, modern companies and innovative institutions.

The Ruhr Regional Association (RVR), situated in Essen, is the regional hub of the eleven independent cities and four districts of the Ruhr Metropolitan Area with approx. 5.1 million inhabitants. The Ruhr Regional Association is responsible for the regional planning of the Ruhr region. It is the sponsor of significant infrastructure projects such as the Industrial Heritage Trail and the Emscher Landscape Park. With klimametropole RUHR 2022 (KMR), the RVR established a regional umbrella brand uniting businesses, associations and institutions, clubs as well as all citizens of the Ruhr Metropolitan Area in a joint mission to turn climate protection into a vital issue for each and every individual.

The KlimaExpo.NRW is a climate change initiative from the North Rhine-Westphalian (NRW) state government. In order to harness the transformation of the energy system, climate protection and the necessary adaptations to the impacts of climate change as driving forces for sustainable development in business and society, the state government created KlimaExpo.NRW. The aim of the state-based initiative is to present successful projects in innovative formats to a wide audience right up to the international level and to initiate further commitment to climate protection. The purpose of KlimaExpo.NRW is to present the technological and economic potential of North Rhine-Westphalia in this area. It is both an exhibition of performance potential and a laboratory for new ideas for NRW as a location, not only in one place and on one day, but rather throughout the state all the way through to 2022. In 2017, the interim presentation of KlimaExpo.NRW will take place across the whole of NRW. The state-based initiative receives the funds to implement this presentation from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

WELCOME RECEPTION

The three-day TWINS Conference Ruhr - Cities in Climate Change opens with an evening reception at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site on 6th November.

The TWINS community will be welcomed by Thomas Kufen, Lord Mayor of the City of Essen, Josef Hovenjürgen MdL, Chair of the Ruhr parliament of the Ruhr Regional Association, and Dr. Heinrich Dornbusch, CEO of the KlimaExpo.NRW. During the panel discussion, participants will learn more about how the City of Essen transformed from a coal and steel town to the European Green Capital 2017 and became a role model for structural change for other European cities. The panel will also share their insights into how the entire Ruhr Metropolitan Area had to reinvent itself repeatedly and is now moving into a green decade, and how the state-based initiative KlimaExpo.NRW acts as an engine for progress in the transformation from gray to green.

The impact of climate change in urban areas will be rendered more tangible through an interactive game which will enable participants to find out more about their respective cities. With various opportunities for inspiring conversations and encounters, the evening reception will be completed with live music from the renowned ensemble Trionova and a fine selection of food and drinks.

Sustainable mobility

The decarbonization of urban transport constitutes a priority area for climate action. Fossil-fuel based individualized transport needs to give way to eco-friendly modes such as walking, cycling and public transport running on renewable energies. Urban logistics need to be optimized in conjunction with human traffic particularly during peak traffic hours to make the flow of goods through the city more sustainable.

On the third day of the TWINS Conference Ruhr - Cities in Climate Change, participants can experience climate protection on site. Excursions will take place at selected regional climate change mitigation and adaptation projects. As a showcase, the KlimaExpo.NRW presents projects that are using innovative solutions to rise to the challenges presented by climate change.

Conference participants are invited to explore a variety of impressive climate action projects from a range of topics and assimilate fascinating information at first hand. Accompanied by project managers, they will gain deeper insights into different topics relevant for cities in climate change.

MOBILITY

Is it possible to include electric vehicles into the mobility fleet of a municipal administration? What is needed to integrate a climate-friendly bike-highway in a metropolitan area? This excursion takes you to selected innovative examples in the Ruhr area.

Participants take part in presentations as well as in guided tours (partly outside).

FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES

This excursion provides insights into projects which are involved in new energy technologies and innovative research. New storing technologies and the longest superconductor cable in the world, right in the middle of the city of Essen, offer innovative opportunities to climate-friendly city development.

Participants take part in presentations as well as in guided tours (partly outside).

Fraunhofer UMSICHT & Volterion, Oberhausen

The Fraunhofer UMSICHT stands for research on the transformation of energy and raw material systems. The project Volterion, as a Spin-Off of Fraunhofer UMSICHT, develops innovative batteries for domestic use to store power from renewable energy sources and is an example

for the success of the Institutes work.

Ruhr Bike Highway – RS1, Regional Ruhr Association, Essen

The RS1 (Radschnellweg Ruhr) is the first bike highway in a metropolitan area and offers a new high-speed link for climate-friendly mobility in the Ruhr region.

The presentation stops at the Regional Ruhr Association first before visiting the RS1 bike highway on-site.

TWINS VenueZOLLVEREIN - UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

Hundreds of coal mines produced coal in the Ruhr area, but only one has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2001. With good reason: the Zollverein Coal Mine is a masterpiece of industrial architecture, created by the visionaries Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer.

The symmetrical arrangement of buildings is still impressive today - the facilities designed down to the last detail are a completely preserved synthesis of the arts.
