PAGE 3 Vigésimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario NOT AGAINST US

Like Moses before him, Jesus corrects his disciples’ misunderstanding of the gift of the Spirit. They saw peo-ple who were not of their company casting out demons and doing other works such as Jesus had done. Jesus points out that no one who does a good deed in his name can be opposed to him at the same time. He goes on to point out the importance of the “little ones,”: the poor, simple people, children, the meek ones who are not im-portant in the world. It is to them that he was sent, not to the wealthy and the self-righteous. He underscores the importance of small works done in faith, as well as big works like driving out demons. “Anyone who gives you a cup of water . . . because you belong to Christ . . . will surely not lose his reward” (Mark 9:41). God builds the coming reign little by little in our actions, however small and unassuming, when they are done out of love of God and neighbor.

Question of the Week

First Reading — Moses said, “Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets!” (Numbers 11:25-29). Psalm — The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart (Psalm 19) Second Reading — Come now, you rich. The wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud (Jason 5:1-6). Gospel — Whoever is not against us is for us (Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48). Question for Children: In what specific ways do you share with the poor from what you have been given? Question for Adults: In today’s worldwide community, who are the rich and what does God want of them?

Monday: Jb 1:6-22; Ps 17:1bcd-3, 6-7; Lk 9:46-50 Tuesday: Jb 3:1-3, 11-17, 20-23; Ps 88:2-8; Mt 18:1-5, 10 Wednesday: Jb 9:1-12, 14-16; Ps 88:10bc-15; Lk 9:57-62 Thursday: Jb 19:21-27; Ps 27:7-9abc, 13-14; Lk 10:1-12 Friday: Jb 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5; Ps 139:1-3, 7-10, 13-14ab; Lk 10:13-16 Saturday: Jb 42:1-3, 5-6, 12-17; Ps 119:66, 71, 75, 91, 125, 130; Lk 10:17-24 Sunday: Gn 2:18-24; Ps 128:1-6; Heb 2:9-11; Mk 10:2-16 [2-12]

From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the education of young people. In ancient Rome, teachers of boys had to resign their posts in order to become cate-chumens, since the education of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public educa-tion has been so attuned to other values that creative solu-tions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, gov-ernment schools had a goal of “Anglicizing” the Irish in cul-ture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of “hedge schools.” In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cottages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmasters provided eager students with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and “civil dis-obedience” ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her companions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threatened their faith.

Treasures from our Tradition A Message from Archbishop José H. Gomez

Brothers and Sisters, We are working hard in the U.S. Bishops’ conference to address the scandals in the Church. We continue to be deeply disturbed and saddened by what has happened. We are determined to seek answers to questions that have been raised. And we are committed to take every step necessary to ensure that we are protecting the people we are called to shepherd and holding our-selves to the highest standards of accountability before God and before the whole family of God. I urge you to read today’s statement from the U.S. bish-ops' administrative committee. It is only the beginning of what needs to be done. But I believe it is a good, solid beginning. This is a time for prayer and penance and puri-fication for those of us who are bishops and priests. And as we work for the renewal and reform of the Church, we are asking humbly for your assistance and expertise — as mothers and fathers, and as faithful Catholics in all walks of life. Please keep praying for our Holy Father and for our Church. And please pray even harder for those who have been hurt. Together let us work to bring healing and restore justice. May our Blessed Mother Mary intercede for the Church, that we might have the wisdom and courage to do all that the Lord requires in this moment.

Fr. Steephen was born in India to a prayerful family. Imme-diately after his high school education, he entered the Servite Order or the Order of Friar Servants of Mary in 1997 and was ordained on April 22, 2009 also for that community. He was then appointed as a Vocation Director as well as both as an Associate Pastor and Pastor for a Servite parish while still in India. His community subsequently assigned him in Cali-fornia on July 2014 and was assigned at Divine Savior Catholic Church in Los Angeles for a period of six months. He was later assigned to Servite High School, an all male Roman Catholic College preparatory high school located in Anaheim as a Chaplain and Spiritual Director for the school. His main function is counseling the students and saying the everyday mass at the school, confession and retreats comple-menting the formation of each student to the person of Christ, drawing them to embrace Christ, love Christ, imitate, live and be Christ to others. Fr. Steephen is also helping out nearby parishes like St. Paul of the Cross, St. Philip's at Full-erton and St. Linus Church. He helps the Cursillo Move-ment in Anaheim for their weekly Wednesday masses. Father Steephen continues to find his relationship with the Lord increasing everyday in his love to serve God's people as a way of serving His master.

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In these times of increasing disparity between the richest among us and the poorest, and the decline of the middle class, much discussion goes on over what constitutes a “living wage.” With employers crying that higher wages will bankrupt them, and politicians warning that paying a living wage will destroy jobs, we see a dilemma over the treatment of the poor and the middle class. Unions, which once assured workers a voice in negotiations with em-ployers, are becoming weaker and are besieged by corpo-rations and politicians. Where is God in all of this? The Letter of James speaks clearly and forcefully about the fate of the rich in their dealings with the poor and with workers. “Behold, the wages you withheld from the work-ers . . . are crying aloud . . . and . . . have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.” Those who are oppressed are equated with the suffering Christ, as the rich are ad-dressed, “You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous one; he offers you no resistance.” Clearly, what we have done to the least ones, we have done to our Lord.

ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE LORD

When Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp, away from the other prophets, Joshua, Moses’ be-loved aide, urges Moses to stop them. Moses replies “Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets!” He proclaims that grace abounds for all and that the word of the Lord should be proclaimed by all the people. We see a similar situation in the Gospel of Mark. John tells Jesus that someone who does not follow him with them is driving out demons in Jesus’ name. Jesus replies “Do not prevent him . . . For whoever is not against us is for us.” In other words, Jesus is saying the same thing as Moses: Would that all the people prophe-sied in God’s name!

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time PAGE 8 September 30, 2018

Peace and Love-Filled Gratitude! It hardly seems possible that two years and 7 months ago, a parishioner greeted me “Welcome to St. Linus Fr. Les and to California!” and he added: “Where the people here are more sunshine than the weather!”. I pondered for such a time what the words meant. Only later to realize that time and the people would provide me a clear answer. Truly my time in friendship and ministry here have been a blessing and memorable one. Definitely not without the les-son and humility gained from mistakes and shortcomings. It was a great privilege to serve God with/through the people of St. Linus and St. Linus School. I am overwhelmed with an experience of gratitude for all you have shown and the willing support I have received, espe-cially with my ministry at St. Linus Church. From both pastors, Fr. Anthony Gomez and Fr. Christopher Felix, for their wisdom, confidence and understanding, to the deacons and their spouses, Deacon Mario and Nati Mejia, Deacon Chuck and Marge Baker, and Mario and Ann Guerra. To the staff, Ana, Faith, Teresa, Arlene, Maria, Stephanie, Christina and Crystal. To the Administration and faculty of St. Linus School. To all the ministry leaders, and volunteers, thank you so

much! To the Church workers I see every day, I truly learned a lot from your words and example. I have a long list of names in mind, but would only become a faint effort for my space here and would never satisfy.

In spirit, I embrace all of you in prayer, in heart, I will always love and cherish all of you, in memory will consider the best days of my life and in my vocation, my sincere gratitude for bringing the best of my priesthood to ministry with you. I have seen “Christ” in/through and with you. God bless you! I will miss you all!

God Bless you, Father Lester Niez, Associate Pastor

TREE OF LIFE LEAVES UP-DATE: If you have paid your pledge in full and your leaf has not been placed, please make sure you have filled out the Leaf Inscription Form. If you have questions, please call the Parish Office (562) 921-6649. The inscription machine where the leaves are ordered, has been “Out of Service”, which caused several delayed shipments of paid leaves. We appreciate your pa-tience while this problem is being corrected.

THE DEVASTATION OF SIN Jesus goes on to teach about sin and its consequences. “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” By “little ones,” Jesus means the humble followers as well as innocent children who love him. Certainly those who have abused children have not caused the children “to sin,” but have made them victims of the worst kind of abuse. These people are worthy of condemnation. Jesus next points out something so strong in its condemnation of sin that it alarms us when we hear it, knowing that we all are sinners. But Jesus often speaks in metaphors and parables, and it is not necessary to take his teaching about cutting off hands and feet and gouging out eyes literally. It can be taken to mean that if we are guilty of sin, we should make an immediate break from our sinfulness and return to God. Better to cut sin out of our life than to enter into eternal darkness. There is so much to learn from these readings that we have many things to ponder and to pray about. Take advantage of these wise teachings to become closer to Christ and to treat one another with love and care.

AMEN SUNDAY

Next Sunday, is Amen Sunday (the first weekend of every month). Amen Sunday is an opportunity for us to celebrate and highlight the progress of our Capital Cam-paign. It also gives us a chance to bring in our pledge and stand in solidarity with our parish and the mission of our campaign. If you would like to bring in your campaign pledge envelopes or your checks towards your commit-ment, it is very welcomed and appreciated. If you have not pledged we also welcome your monetary donations.

A Pro Life Rosary for the Unborn Every Tuesday at 6:30pm inside church before mass

Many lives depend on us advocating for them!

Please continue to pray! The babies are counting on us! ~ Remember to pray daily for your spiritually adopted child and his/her parents. During your earthly life, this spiritually adopted child of yours is known only to God, but in the world to come, it is hoped that you will meet this child whose life was spared by your prayers and spend eternal happi-ness with him/her.

One Month: Your spiritually adopted baby has been quite active over the past month. Already your baby is 10,000 times bigger than at conception. Your baby has developed the foundations of his/her brain, spinal cord, and nervous system by the 20th day. His/Her heart began to beat on the 21st day and is pumping blood though its own cir-culatory system. The blood type can be different from the mother’s. Your baby is most vulnerable during the next month of being aborted. Pray that the Lord of Life might move the heart of this baby’s mother to give the most precious gift of all – the gift of life.
