WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS
We would like to extend a warm welcome this
week to these new parishioners at St. Timothy:
Mary and Scott Kelly Barber and
James and Dianne Matheis
Pray, hope, and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful
and will hear your prayer.
-St. Padre Pio
SEPTEMBER 20, 2020 - 3 - TWENTH-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My deepest thanks to all parishioners of St. Timothy parish for all you do to increase charity and to take on sacrifice.
Fr. Ed
A father was approached by his small son who told
him proudly, “I know what the Bible means!”
His father smiled and replied, “What do you mean,
you ‘know’ what the Bible means?”
The son replied, “I know!”
“Okay,, “ said his father. “What does the Bible
mean?”
“That’s easy, Daddy,” the young boy replied
excitedly, “It stands for ‘Basic Information Before
Leaving Earth.’”

There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to
her brother in another part of the country.
“Is there anything breakable in here?” asked the postal clerk.
“Only the Ten Commandments.” answered the lady.

Somebody has said there are only two kinds of people in the world.
There are those who wake up in the morning and say, “Good
Morning, Lord,” and there are those who wake up in the morning and
say, “Good Lord, it’s morning.”

A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because
he was short of time and couldn’t find a space with a meter. Then he
put a note under the windshield wiper that read: “I have circled the
block ten (10) times. If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment.
Forgive us our trespasses.” When he returned, he found a citation
from a police officer along with this note, “I’ve circled this block for ten
(10) years. If I don’t give you a ticket, I”ll lose my job. Lead us not
into temptation.

There is the story of a pastor who got up one Sunday and announced
to his congregation: “I have good news and bad news. The good
news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program.
The bad news is, it’s still out there in your pockets.”

While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught up to an Amish
carriage. The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor.
Because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed
sign. . . “Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution:
Do not step in exhaust.”

A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question, :”Boys
and girls, what do we know about God?”
A hand shot up in the air. “He is an artist!” said the kindergarten boy.
“Really? How do you know?” the teacher asked.
“You know—Our Father, who does art in Heaven. . . “

A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas
just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant
worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of
him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a
vacant pump. “Reverend,” said the young man, “I’m so
sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits
until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.”
The minister chuckled, “I know what you mean. It’s the
same in my business.”

People want the front of the bus, the back of the church, and the
center of attention.

Sunday after church, a mom asked her very young daughter what the
lesson was about.
The daughter answered, “Don’t be scared, you’ll get your quilt.”
Needless to say, the mom was perplexed. Later in the day, the
pastor stopped by for tea and the mom asked him what the morning’s
Sunday school lesson was about.
He said, “Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming.”

The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to
ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were
expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was
annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute
had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to
know what to play.
“Here’s a copy of the service,” he said impatiently. “But you’ll have to
think of something to play after I make the announcement about the
finances.”
During the service, the minister paused and said, “Brothers and
Sisters, we are in a great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much
as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can
pledge $100 or more, please stand up.”
At that moment, the substitute organist played “The Spangled
Banner.”
And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

Give me a sense of humor, Lord,
Give me the grace to see a joke,
To get some humor out of life,
And pass it on to other folk!

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus,
I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
“WHY, O God, have you cast us off forever? Why does Your
anger blaze forth against the sheep of Your pasture?”
-Ps 74.1
It’s human to be perplexed.
Reflection. . .
The mystery of God’s silence, when tragedy strikes, is terribly
disturbing for everyone. But take heart, Jesus has come to
establish justice. Give Him time, and you will understand.
All will be well.
Prayer. . .
Dear Jesus, on the Cross you asked “Why?” I know I am not
greater than You. Teach me to accept my perplexity graciously.

SAINT MATTHEW
SAINT OF THE DAY FOR SEPTEMBER 21
(c. 1st Century)
SAINT MATTHEW’S STORY
Matthew was a Jew who worked for the occupying Roman
forces, collecting taxes from other Jews. The Romans were not
scrupulous about what the “tax farmers” got for themselves.
Hence the latter, known as “publicans,” were generally hated as
traitors by their fellow Jews. The Pharisees lumped them with
“sinners” (see Matthew 9:11-13). So it was shocking to them to
hear Jesus call such a man to be one of his intimate followers.
Matthew got Jesus in further trouble by having a sort of going-
away party at his house. The Gospel tells us that many tax
collectors and “those known as sinners” came to the dinner. The
Pharisees were still more badly shocked. What business did the
supposedly great teacher have associating with such immoral
people? Jesus’ answer was, “Those who are well do not need a
physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the
words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the
righteous but sinners” (Matthew 9:12b-13). Jesus is not setting
aside ritual and worship; he is saying that loving others is even
more important.
No other particular incidents about Matthew are found in the New
Testament.
REFLECTION
From such an unlikely situation, Jesus chose one of the
foundations of the Church, a man others, judging from his job,
thought was not holy enough for the position. But Matthew was
honest enough to admit that he was one of the sinners Jesus
came to call. He was open enough to recognize truth when he
saw him. “And he got up and followed him” (Matthew 9:9b).

CATECHISM CORNER: HOW TO EAT AN ELEPHANT
ONE BITE AT A TIME
Article 121 of the Catechism of the Catholic
Church:
The Old Testament is an indispensable
part of Sacred Scripture.
It’s books are divinely inspired and retain a
permanent value for the Old Covenant has never been revoked.
REFLECTION:
God spent a long time preparing the world for his Son, and the
whole fascinating process is chronicled in the Old Testament ,
an important part of the greatest story ever told.
PRAYER:
Father of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, reveal yourself to us
through the history, the prophets, and the wisdom of the Hebrew
Scriptures.

Publishing, 2006)
WHEN THINGS GO WELL REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE
Pope St. Gregory the Great sent St. Augustine of Canterbury to
convert the pagan English. When Augustine reported he had
been able to work miracles in the sight of the English, Gregory
reminded him that all the glory belongs to God. The better
things are going, the more important it is to remember the One
who makes things go well.
My dear brother, with all the things you accomplish outwardly
through the work of God, you need to judge yourself carefully
within. Carefully understand who you are, And how great the
grace is in that nation for whose conversion you have even been
given the gift of doing miracles. If you ever remember having
offended against our Creator - by word, or by deed - bring those
things back to your memory, so that the memory of your guilt will
keep down the rising glory of your heart. And whatever ability to
do miracles you have been given, or may be given, do not think
of those powers as granted to you, but rather to the people for
whose salvation they have been conferred on you.
St. Gregory the Great, “Letter 28”
In God’s presence, consider . . .
When things go well am I quick to give the credit to God?
Or do I usually take the credit for myself?
Closing Prayer:
The first verse of Psalm 115 has long been used as a prayer of
thanksgiving:
“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and faithfulness!”
(Source: “A Year With The Church Fathers,” Mike Aquilina,
St Benedict Press, 2010)
Have no fear of moving into the unknown. Simply step out
fearlessly knowing that I am with you, therefore no harm can
befall you; all is very, very well. Do this in complete faith and
confidence.

PRAYER ON YOUR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
O God, we thank you that you have given us another
year of life together. We thank you for the love which
grows more precious and for the bonds which grow
more close each day. We thank you for the
happiness we have known together; for the sorrows
we have faced together; for all the experiences of sunshine and
of shadow through which we have come, up to today.
We ask for forgiveness for any failure on our part; for any
times when we became difficult to live with; for any lack of
sympathy and understanding; for anything which spoiled even
for a moment the perfect relationship which marriage should be.
Spare us to each other to go on walking the way of life together,
and grant that for us it may be true that the best is yet to be:
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
