Welcome to TW11

Are you looking for an effective way to promote your business?

TW11 for Teddington TW Mag for Strawberry Hill and are each distributed to over 5,500

selected homes and businesses every month.

With rates to suit all budgets – we can also help create artwork

O CTOBER sees the ghosts and ghouls come out to play for Halloween at the end

of the month. We seem to be embracing the modern version a la our American cousins, with the

festivities becoming more elaborate each year. There is no denying that kids love it and a stash of trick or treat bounty should help to take my mind off the clocks going back.

As Simon from Teddington Town is heading off to pastures new I want to take the opportunity to wish him every success for the future. He has made such a positive contribution to the area and will be much missed.

I hope you enjoy this edition TW11 and look forward to seeing you again next month.

TUCKED AWAY between Kingston Road and Fairfax Road is Teddington’s smallest primary school. Its new headteacher, Bernadette Smith, talks to TW11 about her recent appointment to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, BERNADETTE.My roots are a little north of TW11. In the late 70s and early 80s, Pontefract in West Yorkshire was a small mining town with a tightknit community and a history dating back to the Neolithic times. As one of three siblings, I was born into a large Catholic family – my father was one of nine, his father was one of thirteen and his mother one of eleven. As a child, it felt like I was related to everyone and if I ever, heaven forbid, did anything wrong, everyone knew it! Sacred Heart is reminiscent of my own primary school - a single-form entry Catholic primary school linked to a local church supported by a strong community.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A TEACHER?I joined the teaching profession in 2003, having worked for many years as an engineer in the oil and gas industry. With a background in Chemical Engineering I was set for secondary school teaching, however, during training, I decided

that primary education was for me; it’s so satisfying seeing quite how much children develop and grow during their primary years. If asked which was my favourite year group to teach, I would choose either Reception or Year 6, both

of which I thoroughly enjoy for very different reasons.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE HEADTEACHER AT SACRED HEART?Both as a parent of three girls and as a teacher, I have always favoured small schools - probably influenced by my formative years in Pontefract. Teachers in smaller schools have the time to foster and build relationships with every child, ensuring that they can achieve their full potential.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR SACRED HEART?Parents in Teddington are fortunate to have many great primary schools to choose from, but being a smaller school means that we are not as well known in the community. So my first aim is to raise our profile here in Teddington. As Head teacher, I want to build on the strong foundation

that already exists to create an exceptional school providing the best possible education for all. Over the summer, we re-configured the old, privately-run nursery on site to create a brand-new Early Years centre. It looks fabulous! Developing this is

just the first step towards putting Sacred Heart firmly on the map.

BUT ISN’T YOUR SCHOOL JUST FOR CATHOLIC CHILDREN? Although our main aim must be to provide a Catholic education for the Catholic community, we welcome, celebrate and value children of all faiths and none. In fact, around 20% of our children are not Catholics, from a diverse range of cultures and ethnicities. Our aims and values are based on respect, caring for others and being the best you can be, supported by God’s love.If you have a child who is due to start school in September 2016, you are invited to go along and visit thier new Early Years provision on the 5th November between 9.30 and 11.00am.

News & Events

Sheena Harold, Chairman of the Teddington Society. teddingtonsocieity.org.uk

MANY OF YOU WILL have spotted the metal poppies that ‘sprouted’ overnight in

Elmfield Gardens. Why are they there? Well, the red Flanders Poppies grow wild all over the battlefields of Northern France where the First World War raged between 1914-18. To mark the centenary of WW1 Elizabeth Foster gave the Teddington Society the big poppy which was made by the Camelia Bottnar Foundation in Sussex.

We thought this would be a marvellous way to remember the people of Teddington who gave their lives in the war and bought the two smaller ones with the help of a Civic Pride grant. The Council Parks’ department were very helpful in helping us ‘plant’ the three poppies and Mrs Kamlah of Architecture: wk helped get us the planning permission needed as the major poppy is 5ft tall! Elizabeth then donated two plaques, one describing the installation and the other the words of the poem In Flanders Fields which itself is one hundred years old this year having been written by Lt. Col. John McCrae in May 1915.

On Sunday 13th September a small crowd gathered in Elmfield Gardens attracted by the skirl of the bagpipes beautifully played by piper Peter

Anderson. Our M.P., Dr Tania Mathias and Elizabeth unveiled the two plaques before the bugler sounded the Last Post and the Royal British Legion standard was lowered. Then Elizabeth read the exaltation before we observed a minute’s silence at 11am.

We hope you will enjoy the sculptures and will stop from time to time to admire, to think and to remember. There is a film of the unveiling on YouTube if you go to: youtu.be/Gx3vusoEaPU.

THERE ARE MANY ways stress can manifest itself in our daily lives. Stress is often ignored as

an inconsequential temporary inconvenience, something you suffer for a short time till you’re able to finish what you set out to do. The aches in the neck and back, pain in the shoulders and wrists, the tired and stinging eyes are all expected to dissolve away once the pressure’s off. Stress is a constant trigger for releasing adrenaline, a repeated activation of the fight or flight response from what your body assumes is a death threat, even if it is just a melt-down caused by a broken printer!

Short bursts of adrenaline released in sudden ‘threat’ situations activate your sympathetic nervous system increasing your muscle tone, improving your visual acuity and allow your lungs to take in more air. The increased attributes of muscle function and sight can help a person to feel focused and awake, but muscles require massive amounts of energy to function at above normal levels. So within a few minutes the body will respond by breaking down fatty tissue and elevating the amount of glucose in your blood, two major risk factors of heart disease and diabetes.

To allow the new-formed energy to make its way into the muscles, the body diverts blood away from the gut. This leads to decreased gut movement and a cycle of diarrhea and constipation. The increased visual acuity mentioned earlier comes with increased inner eye pressure (glaucoma), which, if left for too long can cause blindness.

After days of stress another hormone starts to take its toll on your body; Cortisol. Released as a partner to adrenaline, cortisol prevents your body from taking the excess sugars in your blood and storing them back in your tissues. A process that is fine for a short time but if left for days will suppress the function of the immune system, your barrier from disease!

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MANAGE YOUR STRESS?It is vital to reduce your muscular tension! This will in turn lower the energy demand from the muscles. Following this aches and pains can be addressed. Exercise, relaxation, a good night’s sleep, healthy diet and plenty of water are all ingredients you need to prevent the build-up of stress.

Movement is vital, gentle exercise classes like Tai Chi, yoga and pilates help to maintain flexibility and improve abdominal wall function. These classes are invaluable if you have a sedentary job, like sitting at a PC all day.

Drinking water also helps nourish the spine. Your spinal discs provide a spring between your vertebrae and take water in overnight whilst you sleep, helping to keep your spine strong and healthy.

Eating healthy foods provide the amino acids, vitamins and minerals that are necessary for the body to repair itself. There are certain unhealthy foods that can aggravate any pain occurring in the body as they are known to increase inflammation, such as refined sugars, saturated fats, MSG (mono-sodium glutamate).

For a holistic, self-help approach you need to observe all aspects of your body – focusing on your posture, both standing and seated, your movement and exercise patterns, and finally what you eat and drink.

TW11 Magazine Awards

THANK YOU TO ALL the readers who have voted in our Awards for Excellence so far. Things

are hotting up so if you haven’t cast your vote, you’ve only got until the 10th of October to have your say. Your’s could be the deciding vote so if you’ve got a favourite, then now’s the time to tell us.

There have been some great comments coming in, and we will be revealing all in next month’s issue. Particularly emotive is the Unsung Hero category, there are some very deserving people in the community, it will be a pleasure to show the winner just how much they are appreciated.

Here is a reminder of the categories, go to our website to vote twmagazines.co.uk.

UNSUNG HEROThis award gives you the opportunity to vote for someone who makes a difference by doing an exceptional job... paid or unpaid. Perhaps it’s a teacher who inspires a generation or someone who quietly offers their time and energy to help make life that bit better for the people around them. We want to know about those special people who deserve a little recognition for the positive affect they have on their community.

BEST SUNDAY DINNERYou’ll know if you’ve ever tried to book a Sunday lunchtime meal in Teddington at the last minute that our pubs and restaurants are packed with customers indulging in roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. There is a great array to choose from, from the traditional to international versions. But which is your favourite, the one most like mum used to make (or perhaps not!)?

BEST CUP OF COFFEEBlessed as we are with a plethora of great cafes, we have the luxury problem of deciding which

one makes the best cup of coffee. For those whose day just isn’t started until they’ve had their favourite fix or those who love to sit in a cafe with friends and appreciate that special moment when a fresh cup of coffee arrives. We want to know which one cuts the mustard for you and should be awarded Teddington’s Best Cup of Coffee.

BEST SERVICEWe all know when we’ve had bad service, but it’s easy to forget too quickly when we’ve had great service. Shop keepers who try their utmost to make sure you’re the happiest of customers or tradespeople who meet your expectations and beyond. We want to celebrate the people who offer the type of service that makes you feel it’s a good day. Now is the time to let us know who you think is deserving of a pat on back for their professional and friendly service.

Go to twmagazines.co.uk to vote in the TW11 Magazine awards. Voting closes 10th October 2015

Tim Syrad runs the Teddington Wine Society teddingtonwinesociety.co.uk @winemantim

IT HAS BEEN A busy few months with trips to California and Oregon over the summer;

September sees the return of the Medal Winners from various international competitions and having spent some time in Porto recently, I feel excited about Port again.

CALIFORNIA AND OREGONIn preparation for some wine tours in 2016 I visited these two states and discovered a truly fascinating world of high quality and a wonderful diversity of wine style. It is impossible to do justice to the breadth and depth of these wine producing areas in a few words but I was forced to reappraise my thinking of Californian wine particularly. Focussing on Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Anderson Valley I discovered an amazing gamut of wines. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay inevitably, but I tasted a host of very stylish Rhone varietals such as Grenache, Mourvedre and Viognier; some stunning Old World fashioned Syrah from an Australian Chris Loxton in Sonoma, and quite stunning Pinot Noir and method traditionelle fizz in the lesser known but highly regarded Anderson Valley.

In contrast, Oregon delivered everything I expected in terms of high quality Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Chardonnay. Much more verdant and less crowded than the Californian wine zones, the wine estates had more time to develop their stories. The scenery around the famous Dundee Hills is spectacular and many of the wineries have created utterly superb wine and food matching opportunities.

MEDAL WINNER BONANZAEvery year, I host a number of tastings which showcase some of the best wines that have received Gold Medals or Trophies at various International Wine competitions. This year has been exceptional with some quite beautiful wines being accoladed. My two highlights were: Chateau Laville 2011 Sauternes – a sublime sweet wine combining richness and elegance with

World of Wine

California, Oregon, Medal Winners, Port & Local Cuisine

fabulous cutting acidity, and Vin Santo Riserva 2008 Capezzanna from Tuscany – a marvel of complexity and decadence. Perfect with a few cantucci biscuits or even better with some artisanal gorgonzola or dolcelatte.

PASS THE PORTSpending a few days in Porto has allowed me to reacquaint myself with the famous Port wines and to regret that I don’t drink more of them. Port has been in a gradual decline for many years but is constantly endeavouring to remarket itself and reinvent new ways of drinking it – on ice, mixed with tonic or lemon syrup. And yet I find myself drawn to the pale, amber gold tawnies of various ages. For me, a 20 year old tawny with rich pate, blue cheese or a chocolate dessert (and sometimes all three) is perfection itself.

TIM’S DINNERSAs often reported here, I am lucky enough to dine out regularly in some very prestigious restaurants and yet I will always endeavour to seek out local cuisine wherever I find myself. Recently one lunchtime while in Porto I discovered a small side street close to the famous and delightful Sao Bento train station. An attractively priced lunch menu beckoned and in I went. Local cabbage soup, bread, 250ml wine, fresh fish simply grilled with rice and potatoes, chocolate mousse and a coffee. Haute cuisine it wasn’t. Freshly prepared with care and the warmth of the owners made it an experience. Leaving a 40% tip of two euros felt curiously mean yet was gratefully received.

Councillor’s Update

seeking residential development on part of the site.

This follows the failure of bids from the Education Funding Agency and a community bid for sports use. The developer, Quantum Group, have said ‘Ours plans for the former ICL sports grounds are embryonic at this stage. These include plans to create a high quality mixed-use development; primarily focused on care and retirement living on a portion of the site. However, we would like to reassure residents that the vast majority of the site will be retained for sports and community uses. We plan to make some significant improvements and provide a variety of sporting, health and wellbeing facilities for the enjoyment of the local community. We intend for the grounds to be fully opened up to the public, to the benefit of local residents, sports associations and community groups.’

Any such plans will be controversial given the special status of the land. I remain of the opinion that if the land is to be used at all, the priority should be the provision of school places, given that the current plan for the students who have just started at Turing House on Queens Road is that they be carted over to the far-side of Whitton to continue their education in three years time, which seems against all common-sense.

THE LONG-AWAITED hydro-electric scheme at Teddington Weir finally

got the go ahead from the Council’s Planning Committee on 16th September.

The local scheme aims to generate green electricity from the Thames through three Archimedes screw turbines. These are driven by the water falling over the weir, and in turn drive generators, putting carbon-free electricity into the National Grid. The estimated production is around 1.6GWh of electricity. The hamhydro website hamhydro.org explains that this is equivalent to the electricity needs of 600 homes. The local company responsible for the scheme has committed to putting ten percent of profits into a foundation ‘which will seed other renewable and fuel poverty alleviating projects locally’.

The planning application had proved controversial, particularly with the management - and some members - of the nearby private Lensbury Club, which feared a loss of profits due to the proximity of the scheme, raising concerns around the appearance of the turbines and noise. Objectors also claimed the scheme would increase flood risk. However, at a Planning Committee meeting in April the majority of Councillors accepted the Environment Agency’s expert advice that the scheme would not lead to flooding. Equally the majority did not regard the appearance of the plant as a reason for refusal. But they deferred a decision pending a further report on noise.

At the reconvened meeting on 16th September to consider this report Councillors voted by 7 votes to 2 to approve the scheme, following the report reinforcing the original advice from the Council’s officers that, with the very stringent conditions proposed, noise from the weir would not be significantly greater than at present.

On other news, we have recently learned that Imperial College sports ground on Udney Park Road has been sold to a private developer who is
