Totally Locally Teddington Turns Two

THIS YEAR AT TEDDINGTON Lights Up, Totally Locally Teddington celebrated its second

year anniversary.

During these two years, they have organised various incentives such as Fiverfest, Amazing April Draw, Teddington Tenner, Teddington World Cup and the Summer Surprise. All of the these initiatives were designed to encourage locals to re-discover and support the independent traders of Teddington.

Did you know, if every adult in Teddington spent £5 at an independent trader per week instead of online or in a supermarket, it would generate £5.1m for our local economy? Research has shown that for every £1 spent at an independent trader, 70p goes back into the local economy. Independent traders use and support other independent businesses, tradesmen, local

schools and charities. This is why, when shopping or eating out, deciding where you spend your money is important.

In the lead up to Christmas, a time of extensive gift shopping, we would like to remind locals to support our traders before going online or into neighbouring towns.

We have so many traders in Teddington that offer a vast range of beautiful gifts suited for every person and budget. From specialist food providers, children’s toys and clothes, presents for mums and dads, grandparents to pets. If Christmas is a time of giving, make this Christmas one of giving back by supporting the independent traders that make Teddington special.

Egad! The Woman in WhiteSaturday 13th–20th December

A phantasmagorically festive feast of farce and fun. You know the story. Well, you think you do... This spoof of the classic mystery novel is a comedic Christmas cocktail of Gothic ghosts, ghoulish gasps, gorgeous gowns... and geriatric gimps. Boo and hiss as conniving cad Percival Glyde

marries lovely Laura Fairley, a wealthy heiress, to save himself from crippling debts. Jeer and cheer as he has her banged up in an asylum while pretending she’s died, only for all to come right (sort of) in the end. IT’S ALMOST A GIVEN that most of us will overdo it this Christmas with festive food, booze,

shopping and parties aplenty. As a result there is a strong possibility that any amount of overindulgence will take its toll, reflecting poorly on our skin health.

The look, as in glow, tone and elasticity of the skin is influenced by many factors of our lifestyle habits, it is central to our social and visual experiences, when our face is fresh, youthful and radiant we feel great and confident. When our skin is dull and lifeless we feel low and miserable. It clearly mirrors how we are taking care of ourselves. If you are suffering from lack of sleep, puffy eyes, grey skin tone and ongoing sore throats this is a clear sign that lifestyle stresses are getting the better of you.

But there are ways to overcome the demands of the festive season and maintain a glowing look without compromising on all the joyful activities. Remember the maxim ‘everything in moderation’ and try to find a balance. If you do intend to ‘party party’! Make sure you manage your diary to include some down time by not booking events back-to- back.

Ditch the hangover! Avoid excessive drinking and take the option of mixing spritzers to dilute alcohol with soda or tonic. Keep a glass of water going with a glass of wine. Stay off the spirits and don’t mix the grape with the grain.

In the event you wake up with a fuzzy head and feel groggy. Pick yourself up with a cleansing drink of fresh lemon steeped in hot water, then pop out for a 30 minute run. Fresh air and exercise is a great way to clear your head, revive and brighten your skin.

Beauty sleep! Even though there may be a busy schedule ahead, make sure you have a few early nights. You can uphold your loveliness by sleeping around 7-8 hours a night to help repair skin cells.

All We Want for Christmas is Glowing Skin!

You are what you eat! Too much rich food will cause skin outbreaks, redness and lines. Be sure to have a one-day detox during the week. Try a pineapple and cucumber smoothie to cleanse the system. Pineapple contains a powerhouse of valuable enzymes, such as bromelain, and minerals renowned for aiding digestion, reducing inflammation, and curbing appetite, while the cucumber helps reduce the sugar content of the juice, hydrate the body, and cleanse the skin. Pamper yourself! Make time for a relaxing facial or massage to support skin health and wellbeing. If you are staying in for an evening’s recovery, take a long therapeutic bath adding a blend of essential oils such as five drops each of Lavender and Rosemary. The properties of the oils will help relax muscular tension and calm the mind.

Skin rituals! Whether your late to bed or rushing off in the morning, always make time to cleanse and moisturise your face. Remember to exfoliate your body once or twice a week before you shower, finishing with a rich body moisturizer to keep the skin toned, supple and youthful.

Feed your skin! with Argan oil, extracted from the kernels of the Moroccan Argan tree, rich in fatty acids and vitamin E. Not only does Argan oil act as an effective moisturiser, it can also restore elasticity, leaving the skin feeling plumper and softer. Could it be on your wish list this Christmas?

Teddington Lights Up

WHEN I THINK BACK to my time travelling on the 7.24am to Waterloo each day, I noticed

as many broad sheets as redtops being avidly read by my fellow passengers. In particular was The Times which seemed to have the edge on The Daily Telegraph and in those early days, I did not know then that it originated at the behest of Teddington man – John Walter.

John Walter was born in the City of London in 1739, the son of a Richard Walter, a successful coal merchant. On his father’s death, John succeeded to the business and by 1755, he was the head of Walter, Bradley & Sage. The firm prospered and he made a considerable fortune, taking a leading part in the establishment of the Coal Market or Coal Exchange, an institution of which it is recorded that he was ‘the principal planner and manager.’ He was chairman of the committee of this institution for many years but he resigned the position in 1769, when he abandoned the coal business to become a marine underwriter.

At first he only concentrated on ships involved in the coal trade. As he became more successful, he also became more involved, joining Lloyd’s of London (then Lloyd’s Coffee House). He was to write in 1799 ‘I was twelve years an underwriter at the Coffee House, and subscribed my name to six millions of property; but was weighed down, in common with above half those who were engaged in the protection of property, by the host of foes this nation had to combat the American war.’ This was the American War of Independence and it was enough to snuff John’s ambitions.

In the beginning of 1782, John called his creditors together and announced his bankruptcy. This was handled in an honourable way and the creditors agreed for John to collect all debts due to the estate, such was their confidence in his integrity. This he did ensuring that the creditors suffered very little but he himself was ruined. With a wife and six children to maintain, he rapidly needed to find a new venture.

Later in the year, he met Henry Johnson, a printer who had patented new methods of printing. Greatly impressed with these, John purchased the patent rights from Johnson and in 1784, he acquired the King’s Printing Office in Printing House Square, Blackfriars. Initially, he intended only to print books using the logographic process which he confidently expected to become of national benefit. Despite printing some forty volumes, including Robinson Crusoe Vols 1 & 2, printing was not delivering the anticipated profits.

However at this time John Wilkes had established the press’s right to report Parliament and a thriving London press now boasted eight morning papers with a combined circulation of about 25,000. Their content consisted of parliamentary reports, foreign news culled from continental papers and advertisements and they were all very strongly Whig (Liberal) or Tory.

In May 1784 John wrote to his former creditor and current patron, Dr Benjamin Franklin ‘I am going to publish a newspaper’ and on Saturday the 1st January 1785, the presses rolled for Issue 1 of The Daily Universal Register which three years later was to become The Times. At four pages and sixteen columns printed by hand and priced 21/2d (11/2d of which was stamp duty), John Walter had arrived as a newspaper publisher. His editorial proclaimed ‘The Register, in its politics, will be of no party... Due attention should be made to the interests of trade, which are so greatly promoted by advertisements.’ Unlike his

rivals, he would not hold over advertisements to make room for windy Commons debates.

The Register plodded on in its way. John’s high-minded principle of putting advertising revenue before affairs of state was all very well but it did not make money. When, in 1789, he accepted an under-the-counter Government salary of £300 per annum, he was only doing what every other newspaper proprietor in London was doing. In his case, it was a fee for publishing paragraphs favourable to the King’s party but it was to backfire badly.

In 1789 George III was declared cured of his madness, much to the relief of his Prime Minister, Pitt the Younger, who knew that a Regency under the Prince of Wales would soon see him out of office. A letter containing two paragraphs of copy arrived at Printing House Square, bearing the agreed secret mark of the Secretary to the Treasury. The screed attacked the conduct of ‘Prinny’ and the Duke of York whilst at the King’s bedside, implying that they had not shown due respect for the monarch and were not especially pleased that he had recovered. John duly published and the King’s sons duly sued.

John expected Pitt to bail him out of trouble but Pitt remained silent. The case went to court and John’s defence was that he could not be personally held responsible for every word printed in the paper, an excuse as lame then as it would be now. Nevertheless, he established the stout journalistic principal of refusing to divulge his sources. He lost the case, was fined £50 with a further £50 for a libel against the Duke of York, and sentenced to two years in Newgate prison. He bemoaned his lot protesting that he was locked in his cell at eight every night ‘without a sixpence for all the expenses I am at.’ However he continued to draw the £300 each year and in a moment of remorse, the Prince of Wales gave him £250 for his trouble and won him an early release after sixteen months.

As the years moved on, John began to relinquish power to his son William and by 1795 he retired

to Teddington leaving William with the printing business and his other son, John Jnr, managing The Times. John acquired a house named The Grove which had been built by Sir William Chambers for a prominent Jewish merchant, Moses Franks. Being Jewish, Moses Franks did not attend St Mary’s Church and so when John arrived at Church to claim his pew, he was informed that there was not one. John was much aggrieved with this and set about suing the churchwardens of the parish, Messrs Gunner and Drury, calling on them to show cause as to why they had not seated the plaintiff and his family in the parish church in accordance to his situation and condition. He won his case, thereby setting a precedent for ecclesiastical law.

Despite crossing swords with the establishment, again, John became a churchwarden himself in 1801. Having regard to his own experiences, the first thing he accomplished was a complete re-allocation of the pews, part of which caused male and female servants to be separated. Apart from this he seems to have enjoyed the quiet life of Teddington until his death on 16th November 1812. He is buried in Teddington Church. It would be interesting to know what he would have made of his present successor at The Times.

Tim Syrad runs the Teddington Wine Society teddingtonwinesociety.co.uk @winemantim

CHRISTMAS TIME IS always manic in the wine trade – shops can often do a third of their

annual turnover in three weeks. Inevitably, many people turn to the classics and old favourites, dust off the decanter with the remains of last year’s Port in it and carry on as normal. Let me beseech you once again this year to avoid falling into the well of wine monotony! Here is my alternative Christmas day selection that will refresh your taste buds, invigorate your palate, take you outside of your comfort zone and fill you with inspiration for what the wine world has to offer.

PRE-LUNCH APERITIFSSmoked salmon blinis are so last century so why not try a mini snapper burger with a black bean mayo? This would be ideal with a high quality blanc de blancs Champagne or Franciacorta from Northern Italy.

HOW ABOUT SOME FISH?I would suspect no amount of imploring will budge the majority from the main five; Turkey, Beef, Lamb, Goose or Nut roast. However, this year I would like to propose some fish – and I’m not talking cod and chips. Something exotic, whole roasted and flavoured with exotic herbs and spices. I’m thinking John Dory – flavoured with rosemary, sun dried tomatoes, and garlic... utterly delicious with some Asian slaw and spicy rice noodles - and you’re less likely to feel horribly bloated as you slump down to watch the Doctor Who Christmas Special. Crack open some glorious New World Pinot Noir and feel contemporary and imaginative.

CHRISTMAS CHEESE Brie, Stilton, Camembert, Cheddar – if these are on your Christmas cheese selection list then I implore you to broaden your horizon. Get down to The Teddington Cheese and marvel at their selection of artisan cheeses. Choose something you’ve never tasted before, make a point of trying some amazing English cheeses such as Berkswell,

Lord of the Hundreds or Rachels. Excite your palate with some off the wall wine matches. Pinot Gris is my current favourite with soft cheeses – particularly a great example such as Lismore Pinot Gris from Ata Rangi in Martinborough, New Zealand that has a nice nip of residual sweetness.

TIM’S BIG CHRISTMAS PUDDINGYou will have to forgive a New World influence as I have spent all of November in New Zealand. I enjoyed recently a cranberry, almond and orange Christmas pudding that was wonderfully light and yet retained the essence of Christmas. This would be exquisite with a late harvest Pinot Gris from Alsace and was exceptional with the Greywacke Late Harvest Riesling from Marlborough.

TIM’S DINNERSI visited the amazing Hans Herzog winery in Blenheim recently. They have an extraordinary, eclectic selection of 22 grape varieties in just eleven hectares of vines. Herzog is also home to easily the best restaurant in the region and surely top five in New Zealand. Michelin starred chefs often visit to hone their skills using the fabulous Kiwi ingredients. The five course tasting menu with matching wines was a sublime joy! Amazing amuse bouche of prawn carpaccio, succulent Wanganui beef, perfectly cooked monkfish and a trio of exotic desserts – all partnered with unusual grapes that you wouldn’t expect to find in Marlborough: Arneis, Montepulciano, Gruner Veltliner, plus some late harvest Pinot Gris and some amazing Pinot Noir. A long way to go but worth it.

May I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a suitably vinous New Year!

World of Wine

May Christmas be a festival of fine wine... and don’t be boring!

Teddington Property Prices

So, I had a more unusual enquiry last week that

I thought could relate to many Teddington residents and therefore worth sharing. A mum living in Hampton dropped me an email to ask for my advice on buying an investment property for

her daughter who was about to start at Uni. We met for a coffee and discussed the details. Her daughter has just started at Bristol University this September and is currently, as most first year students do, living in halls. Now, her plan is, instead of paying a landlord an astronomical rent for a tiny three bed house, packed with four students, where you want to wipe your feet before leaving, she wants to become that landlord and provide her daughter and her friends with a decent place to live for her last two years of Uni.

So, here’s what we did... We looked at an example property, analysed the figures and how it would work. We found a really nice, large, three bed terrace a ten minute walk from campus, just about do-able for students apparently! It has two reception rooms which means you can convert one into a bedroom and the other becomes the house lounge with a separate kitchen. It’s on the market for £375k and, with four students living there, you would get an average of £400pcm from each, giving you a gross income of £1600pcm. That gives you a gross yield of 5.1%. Now don’t forget, you’re not getting the income from your own child’s rent but effectively you are, in real terms, seeing as you would otherwise be paying that to another landlord anyway.

Let’s look at the pros of you buying a property for your child at Uni.

• You are investing in property rather than giving dead money to another landlord.

• You know your child is living in a nice, well looked after property complying with current regulations (fire safety etc.).

• Your property will more than likely increase in value during your child’s time at university.

• You can either sell the property at the end of their course or continue renting to a new set of students.

• You can pass the property on to your child, potentially saving on tax, to get them started on the property ladder.

If this is something you’ve maybe been thinking about for a while and appeals to your circumstances then please do drop me an email or give me a call and we can chat about how it can work for you. As part of my business, I can find you a suitable property in any UK University town, make sure you are compliant with all regulations, provide all relevant tenancy agreements and even fully manage the property for you. Effectively a one-stop shop where you can be involved as little or as much as you like.To Find out more email me at [email protected]

Councillor’s Update

ACID GRASSLANDThe grassland in Bushy Park supports a considerable range of modest but interesting wild flowers and grasses including (illustrated here) harebells, tormentil and bird’s foot trefoil.

Bushy Park staff have now started work on a draft tree strategy for the next 50-100 years which will take account not only of the SSSI status but also the impacts of tree diseases and climate change. Consultation will follow.

AIRCRAFT NOISEMany residents will be relieved that the aircraft flight path trials have now been brought to a conclusion as, when the wind was in an easterly direction, they led to more noise complaints and over a more populated area than expected. At a meeting with residents held in Teddington Baptist Church, Heathrow Airport staff admitted that the some planes following the compressed trial paths were turning at a lower angle than expected and therefore flying over the centre of Teddington rather than further west over the Park. They also agreed that it was an option for the eventual new flight paths to be more dispersed than in the trials.

The Teddington ward councillors hold a walk-in surgery on the first Saturday of every month, 10.30 a.m. to 12.00 at Teddington Baptist Church, Church Road.

ENGLISH NATURE HAS recently announced that, subject to a final consultation period, Bushy

Park will be designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest early in the New Year. The designation also includes Home Park. Royal Parks already manage these parks to safeguard their nature interest but this designation will, for example, help resist pressure for damaging leisure uses.

The main factors making the site of national importance are its invertebrates (regarded as of international importance), its veteran trees and its acid grassland.

INVERTEBRATESThe rare beetles in the park exist because of the continuity of ancient woodland trees going far back to before the park was formed. Many are associated with the decay of the heartwood of trees and with fungi and some make their home in the burrows of stag beetles. They seem too rare to have common names. The creature illustrated is an Aeletes atomarius.

VETERAN TREESThe term veteran as applied to trees is not specifically about age (though some are also ‘ancient’) but about features such as dead wood and hollows. There are about 200 veteran trees (mainly oaks and lime) and 196 veteran hawthorns (which give Bushy Park its name). As well as supporting the rare beetles they support fungi (some very rare) and mistletoe.
