Editors’ Letter

We have been absolutely delighted with the positive comments and encouraging response to the magazine. So much so, that this issue is already bigger and filled with articles and even more pages of community information. Thank you to everyone that sent things across.

We would like to credit the wonderfully colourful front cover to www.thametv.com (see advert p.32). They sent many fantastic pictures of last year’s Thame Carnival but we thought this one would make everyone smile. Do go along and join this year’s carnival on Saturday 15th June (see page 10). Let’s hope for a lovely sunny day and all look forward to seeing what musicals people will portray in the parade which starts from noon through the town centre.

This Issue we have articles from TCC2, the fantastic choir for children in Thame (see p.8) and Waterperry Gardens (see p.24), who we had no idea offered so much for a great trip out.

We are also extremely lucky to have our crosswords supplied from now on by a local business called Personal Crosswords (see p.16). We also have a small editorial from Tony (p17) who has some great gift ideas for all you crossword fans out there.

Please check out the community pages for contact details of local organisations and upcoming events.

Until the next time

Welcome to the second issue of Thame View magazine.

The ChoirTCC2 was founded in November 2010 with administrative and financial support from the highly regarded Thame Chamber Choir. It offers a special opportunity for boys and girls aged between 8 and 14 to learn to sing and enjoy a wide variety of music: the best

of modern, classical and jazz. According to the judges at the Regional Music for Youth Festival in March, after just one full term they already:

“make a lovely sound. It’s clear and pure and the intonation is always spot-on.Your joy is infectious... wonderful!”

The choir performs locally several times a year, on their own as well as with professional and amateur adult musicians.

Musical DirectorDuncan Aspden conducts choirs all over the country: working with children, adults and professional singers. His choirs have sung on BBC television and radio and on tours throughout Europe. Living just a couple of miles away, he is delighted to be working now with the young people of Thame. Aside from directing TCC2 and Thame Chamber Choir, Duncan works further afield as a professional conductor, organist and continuo player.

Makes 8 slicesReady in 1½ hours, plus chilling

Ingredients

For The Pastry225g plain flour1 tsp mustard powderPinch of salt115g butter, chilled and diced4-5 tbsp iced water

For The Filling175g smoked bacon pieces4 onions, peeled and thinly sliced1 tbsp sunflower oil200g mature Cheddar cheese, gratedBeaten egg, to glazeTomato salad, to serve (see Tip)

1 To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the mustard powder and salt. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour between your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.2 Stir in enough of the iced water with a round bladed knife to mix to a crumbly dough. Knead very lightly until just smooth then flatten into a disc and wrap in cling film. Chill for 20-25 minutes.

3 Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Dry-fry the bacon pieces in a large non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until just golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the oil and sliced onions to the pan and fry gently, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until the onions are very tender and pale golden. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.4 Roll out just over half the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20x30cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Layer the bacon, onions and grated cheese in the pastry case and season between the layers with freshly ground black pepper.5 Roll out the rest of the pastry and use to cover the filling. Seal the edges of the pastry with water then pinch them tightly together with fingertips. Trim off any excess pastry.6 Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and pierce 3-4 holes in the top of the pie to allow the steam to escape. Bake on the hot baking sheet for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with tomato salad, if liked.

TIP Serve simply with a fresh tomato salad made by thickly slicing ripe vine tomatoes and layering with finely chopped spring onions and a few fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.

Perfect for a simple lunch or for an early summer picnic this savoury pie has a really

rich and buttery crisp pastry and a tasty smoked bacon and onion filling. It tastes just as delicious warm or cold. Look for packs of smoked bacon pieces near the bacon rashers in the supermarket or use flavoursome Italian diced pancetta instead.

Waterperry Gardens – an inspirational day out

The eight acres of landscaped ornamental gardens at Waterperry have inspired and delighted countless gardeners for more than seventy five years. It’s the perfect place

for inspiration, whether you’re a complete novice or a professional – there are design ideas by the bucketful! Our formal and rose gardens, river walk, lily canal and classical herbaceous border are just a few highlights of a trip to Waterperry, and there’s always something new to see – whatever the season!

While the gardens provide an oasis of calm and beauty, the Waterperry Gallery, Gift Barn and Potting Shed are a shopper’s delight, featuring beautiful, affordable works of art in the Gallery, and inspirational outdoor living ideas and gifts in the Gift Barn and Potting Shed.

Our garden shop offers a wide range of gardening goods and sundries, as well as gift ideas for the green – and not so green-fingered, and our Waterperry grown and pressed apples and juice. We also sell high quality furniture, stoneware water features, pots and sculptures outside in the Furniture Barn and Plant Centre.

We take huge pride in growing most of the plants we sell at Waterperry, so you can be sure of their pedigree. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff are always available to provide advice, information and ideas. You will also find a huge range of apples and juice for sale in season – all grown in our 5 acres of apple and pear orchards.

We have a full programme of events throughout the year, from horticultural themed weekends like Snowdrop and Apple Weekends, to open air theatre during the height of the summer in the stunning setting of our ornamental garden.

True to our roots, we also offer a wide variety of arts, crafts and gardening courses, including the RHS courses and courses taught by our experts. Waterperry Gardens is one of the most inspirational places to learn a new skill. Our current courses can be found on our website and the new 2013/14 course brochure is published in July. Whatever your passion, whether it’s for gardening, bread making or willow weaving there is something for everyone.

Waterperry also boasts a Country Life Museum, featuring agricultural and horticultural implements from a bygone era and a beautiful Saxon Church which still contains its original 13th century stained glass windows, and lancets.

No visit to Waterperry is complete without a trip to Miss H’s Teashop. Our staff pride themselves in cooking everything from fresh localingredients, and offer a mouth-watering selection of home made hot and cold meals. We’re also home to some of the best fresh-baked cakes in the country, and provide a perfect way to end any visit to Waterperry.

Luxton Clinic Headaches

Last month we looked at cerviogenic headaches and neck

pain which was actually the second of a two part editorial. This month we continue the theme and look at tension headaches and migraines with an apology for putting the second article first! What a headache!

Most headaches aren’t serious and can be treated with simple lifestyle changes such as rest, reducing stress, keeping hydrated and eating correctly. Osteopathic treatment can also be very beneficial for some types of headache.

What are headaches? There are two classifications of headaches, primary, as in a tension headache, and secondary which can be due to another underlying health problem. When patients attend The Luxton Clinic with a headache they are thoroughly screened to ensure their suitability for treatment by taking a detailed medical history and conducting a few simple tests.

Tension headaches are probably the most common form of headache and are caused by muscular and tension over the scalp and around the eyes. Common sites include the back of the skull where the muscles of the neck attach, the temple where muscles that move the jaw are located, and the forehead. It is thought that pain is caused when chronic tightness in these muscles causes them to tire, obscure blood flow, or irritate nerves. These headaches can be linked to poor vision or incorrect prescription glasses, dehydration, stress and fatigue.

Tension headaches may last anywhere from 15 minutes to a period of weeks or months. The pain is often described as a band-like tightness or pressure. It may be felt at the back of the head, upper neck, temples and around the eyes. Gentle stretching of the muscles, traction and articulation

of the neck during osteopathic treatment often helps to calm the symptoms.

MigrainesPeople describe migraines as an intense pounding or throbbing pain on one, or both sides of the head. They often occur with visual disturbances such as blurring, floaters and double or tunnel vision. In some cases they even cause temporary blindness. Tinnitus, facial pins and needles and muscular weakness can also be experienced. Figures suggest that around 15% women and 6 % men are affected.

Migraines are categorised as vascular headaches, which means that they are caused by disturbances in blood flow. Many patients notice strong smells and sounds trigger their migraines as well as certain foods and drinks, commonly red wine, coffee, chocolate and cheeses.

Most people treat their migraines successfully with over-the-counter medication and avoiding sounds, smells and foods that aggravate them. If they are severe, however, you may need stronger migraine-specific medication that is only available on prescription from your GP. Many patients find that Migraine headaches are relieved by Osteopathic treatment directed at the upper back and neck.

Book ReviewHow to Win Friends

From the playground to the workplace, we all know we’re not going to get by

without a little help from our friends. But how do we go about forging those friendships in the first place? When Dale Carnegie wrote ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’, he was instantly onto a winner. Surely everyone just wants to be liked? We’ve put together a collection of stories where a friendship is central. And it just goes to show, bonds can be formed in the most unlikely of places.

Of Mice and MenJohn SteinbeckGeorge Milton and Lennie Small are two migrant workers who dream of owning their own farm. George is intelligent but uneducated and Lennie is a great hulk of a man; physically strong but mentally weak. This unlikely pairing sees George acting as a calming influence and father-figure to Lennie. Set during the Great Depression, the pair is forced out of the aptly-named ‘Weed’, California after Lennie’s fondness for touching ‘soft things’ lands him in trouble. Chasing the elusive American Dream, George must decide what kind of a future their friendship can have. The Boy in the Striped PyjamasJohn BoyneBruno is the son of an SS officer and is also a natural-born explorer, so it’s no surprise that when his family moves to ‘Out With’, he has a lot of questions about the children who appear behind the barbed wire fence wearing blue striped pyjamas. Bruno meets Shmuel, who lives the other side, has a shaved head and is constantly hungry and the two form a friendship that will have devastating consequences.

Boyne’s children’s book about concentration camps is a must-read for all adults. It will stay with you for days, weeks and months afterwards, just as it should.

The HelpKathryn StockettThis is the story of three women: Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny, and their attempts to change the social structure and confines of a segregated Mississippi in the 1960s. Young Skeeter is a white woman with a degree, but no husband. She’s also lost her maid and confidante, ‘Constantine’ and nobody can tell her where she’s gone. Aibileen is a black maid who is essentially raising a white woman’s child for her, whilst grieving for her own dead son. Meanwhile Minny is a fantastic cook but an even greater gossip. Between them, the three plan to write and publish their own stories, revealing social scandals and ‘tellin’ it like it is’. It’s brilliant, and worth reading just to hear the revelation of the ‘terrible awful’. That’s a laugh-out-loud moment in itself. The Joy Luck ClubAmy TanBefore Carrie Bradshaw et al, four Chinese women began meeting in San Francisco to compare notes as recent immigrants. It was 1949 and they called themselves ‘The Joy Luck Club’. The women were bound together by circumstance and history, vowing to make money and a new life for themselves. It’s a complex and delicately interwoven tale of Chinese mothers and daughters, revealing secrets and lies and all striving to find a place in the modern world whilst feeling the constant tug of their past. If you’ve never read Tan before then this is a brilliant place to start.

The show is a revue of the highlights of local, national and world affairs since 1913, taking a snapshot of events as each decade passed. So what happened in 1923, 1933, 1943 and so on, all illustrated with the stories, the pictures, the sketches and most importantly the songs of each year. From the Suffragettes in 1913, the progress of the war in 1943, the coronation in 1953, the Kennedy assassination in 1963 to the Iraq war in 2003. Songs such as On the Road to Mandalay in 1913, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes in 1933, The Beatles in 1963 right up to Skyfall in 2013. Tony Long, co-director of A Century of Song, commented, “What better way to celebrate the centenary of the theatre than with a show specially written and designed to focus on all the changes over the years. The whole show has been packaged to be a great night of fun and laughter and superb entertainment for all the family.” Tony and his co-director, Bernadette Tildesley, have collaborated on several previous occasions with revues of the twenties, thirties and other decades, all of which proved to be very successful, so they are hoping their success will continue with this show.Tickets for A Century of Song cost £9 and £8 with £1 off for concessions and are available from Tickets Anywhere, Greyhound Walk, Thame, telephone 01844 217228, or online from www.thameplayers.co.uk.
