This is likely the result of something called simultaneous substitution (also referred to as simsub) – a practice that is mandated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) which requires all television service providers in Canada to temporarily replace the entire signal of one TV channel (U.S. network) with another (Canadian network) that’s showing the same program at the same time. While simultaneous substitution is most common on U.S. networks, sometimes a Canadian signal from outside our area may be replaced with a local signal (CTV Thunder Bay over CTV Ottawa for example).
