Tuxedo Park Community Association meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month, except July and August (no meetings) and December (usually earlier due to Christmas). Meetings start at 7:30 pm. All community residents are welcome to

express their concerns, meet some of your neighbours, or sit in and hear what’s happening in and around you community.

It’s a new day in Tuxedo Park! Last year we successfully restored our association back to

fi nancial health and attracted some of Tuxedo Park’s best and brightest to join our management team. What this means for you, our neighbours, is that we now have the time and money to invest in your ideas to make Tuxedo Park a more vibrant, fun and loving place to live for all of us.

Do you have a passion or interest you would like to share with your neighbours? If your answer to this question is yes, we can help! With our cute hall, gorgeous park,

newsletter and budget for food and drinks, together we can bring your ideas to life.Last year we helped artists share their talent with our kids in order to create gifts for our

seniors. We supported our Spanish-speaking community in their desire to share their food and culture with our residents in a Christmas celebration that was enjoyed by all. We also helped a local DJ and his love of music bring our families together at our now famous Jelly Bean Dance!

You can tell Landmark homes are the best built with your eyes closed.

Take a deep breath in a Landmark home and you’ll notice something different. We continually strive to use as many, low VOC (volatile organic compounds) materials as possible.

Now listen – the triple-paned, low-E, argon-filled windows and advanced construction techniques means peace and quiet.

And if you think that’s good, just wait until you open your eyes and see how beautiful it is.

You’ll find this kind of superior quality in Landmark duplexes, townhouses and homes in seven communities throughout Calgary and Cochrane. Starting from $310,000.

It saddens me to say that Mr. Joe Mason, a friend, neighbor and community icon passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 9th at the Rockyview Hospital. For anyone that spent any time between Highland Park Community Centre and Tuxedo Community Centre you would have seen him at a summer BBQ or picnic singing and playing one of the classics “Help me Make it through the night” or “Your Cheating Heart”. His “One Man Band” consisted of a flat bed trailer with his gear that held a bass drum, snare drum, guitars, harmonica, bass and sound equipment. During the summer months we would be sitting in our back yard being entertained by Joe practicing for his next gig. My husband John would always yell over to him “turn it up Joe” and we would be shakin’ a leg in our backyard all evening. Joe started playing in 1956 at picnics, BBQs, auc-tions, bake sales, Legion halls, and seniors’ lodges. He shared bills with Premier Ernest Manning, Jay (Tonto) Silverheels, Wilf Carter and Slim Pickens.

Joe’s life story is one of triumph. As a boy of 11, a natural gas explosion leveled his home in Lethbridge and put him and his father in hospital for six months with severe burns. I believe this is what gave Joe his inspiration and optimism. Joe was one of the first neighbors my husband and I met upon mov-ing to Highland Park 20 years ago. He was the most colorful character on the block. Those summer nights will never be the same. I would like to tip my hat to you Joe and wish you the best in your new journey. You were and are “ONE OF A KIND”.

Edmonton Trail Road Reconstruction Project Update Major Roads Reconstruction Program

The City of Calgary has a program in place dedicated to recon-structing Calgary’s aging roadways – the Major Roads Reconstruc-tion Program. Elbow Drive, between 4 Street and Glenmore Tr. S.W., and Centre Street, between 42 and 54 Avenues, have already been reconstructed under this program.

Edmonton Trail, from 16 Avenue to 41 Avenue, is the next major roadway on the list for reconstruction. The project will be completed over two years. In 2013, Edmonton Trail, from 28 to 41 Avenues N.E. was reconstructed under this program. In the spring, crews will complete any minor remaining work in this area, such as concrete and landscaping work next to the road.

Edmonton Trail Road reconstruction begins spring 2014The next phase of the Edmonton Trail Road Reconstruction proj-

ect includes the area from 16 Avenue to 28 Avenue N.E. This work is planned to start in spring 2014 and should be complete by fall 2014. Any minor work not completed in 2014, such as landscaping, will be completed the following spring.

The primary focus of this work is on removing the existing pave-ment and rebuilding the roadway to improve the road’s condition. The road will not be widened during construction. Streetlights will be replaced and sidewalks and driveways will be rebuilt as required. Any

existing landscaping disturbed during construction will be repaired. What will happen during construction?• Traffic will often be limited to one lane in each direction and

delays should be expected.• Intersecting roads, alleys, and driveways may be closed periodi-

cally throughout construction. Any business, residence or service di-rectly impacted by construction will receive information notices ex-plaining the impacts.

• The use of large trucks and other equipment will create noise, vi-brations, and dust. The City of Calgary works with their contractors to keep noise and dust disturbance to a minimum.

• Bus stops may be re-located.• More information about construction start dates and where con-

struction will start will be provided when it is available. Start dates are weather dependent.

Survey resultsA survey on the effectiveness of communication during Edmonton

Trail road construction in 2013 from 28 to 41 Avenues was available from Feb. 24 to March 17. We will use the results to improve com-munication in upcoming road construction projects. We will post survey results on the project web page and report on the results in community newsletters in April.

At the January 31st Strategic Meeting of Council, we dedicated funding (thanks largely to the $52 Million) for the first ten years of The Route Ahead (www.routeahead.ca). At the top of the priority list are the Green Line (the combined southeast (SETWAY) and North Central LRT lines) and the Central East line (connecting the com-munities of Greater Forest Lawn along 17th Avenue SE accessing downtown through Inglewood/Ramsay).

These lines are critical to the future of our city because they’ll help move commuters who are currently underserved and they’ll also fo-

cus on Transit Oriented Development (TOD). This means that ev-ery station area will become a mini-downtown and when networked together along these lines, more of us will be able to contemplate a high-quality urban lifestyle that is, for the first time in Calgary’s mod-ern history, not car-mandatory. We are actively pursuing federal and provincial matching funds through the Building Canada Fund, the GreenTRIP, and Municipal Sustainability Initiative grants. A great way to support this effort is to join LRT on the Green, a citizen movement working towards achieving the Green line. Please visit www.lrtonthegreen.ca.

While transit coupled with TOD is the most significant way that we can alleviate the traffic, environmental and financial issues Cal-gary faces on account of our sprawl, another is through encouraging cycling as a viable alternative to motorized transportation. If you are interested in being up to date on either the Route Ahead or cycling, please contact my office at [email protected] or call 403.268.5330 to be added to our electronic mailing list.

New Patients Always Welcome!

Welcome to Spring Tuxedo Parkians. I am so glad that winter is done, and Spring has sprung. I am sure

I am not the only one feeling the urge to start cleaning, purging and getting ready for summertime.

Here are some ways to welcome Spring while maintaining the health of your house and family:

1. Welcome Spring with plants, fl owers or colorful art displays in your windows2. Ensure you have enough fi re alarms and carbon monoxide alarms, replace the batteries3. Report local graffi ti to 311 for cleanup4. Replace outdoor fi xture light bulbs that have burnt out5. Ensure drainage issues are addressed and your sump pumps are ready to start pumping

the spring thaw away from your house6. Clean out your street’s sewer grate if it is clogged, or call 311 for assistance7. Ensure eaves troughs are cleaned out, put down and ready to work before the Spring

showers start8. Tidy up alley garbage that may have collected9. Contact 311 if you have any concerns regarding safety or tidiness in our neighborhood10. Ask your neighbors or your community association for help with cleanups, safety issues,

garbage hauling, beatifying, block parties or anything else you desire in our community. We love Tuxedo Park!

North Central LRT Project updateWe spent a lot of time last spring and summer talking to Calgarians about the North Cen-

tral LRT. Th ese conversations continue to help us shape the project, and more opportunities to have your say will be provided in April and May. Th e conversations we had with people across the city were valuable in helping us understand what is important to our community, how future transportation networks can make our communities better, and how people think we should evaluate the diff erent options we have. Th is past fall, the action continued as we worked on analyzing and evaluating potential route options.

Refi ning the Route Options for Further StudyUsing the community’s input about how to evaluate our options, we sat down to the task

of analyzing several route options including Nose Creek Valley, 4 Street NW, Centre Street North and Edmonton Trail NE, north of 16 Avenue and south of 96 Avenue. From this evaluation, we narrowed it down to two of our highest-ranking options for further study:

1) Centre Street North, at street level (at-grade)2) Edmonton Trail, at street level (at-grade)We evaluated the route options based on criteria like:• Aff ordability • Safety, security and accessibility • Reducing greenhouse gas emissionsIn our evaluations we also considered options for integrating the North Central line with

downtown service. Next steps We’ll be out speaking with Calgarians about our short-listed options this spring. You’re in-

vited to attend upcoming events, including a workshop and a series of Open Houses in April and May. Additional information will be posted online in the near future with event dates.

City Administration took an update on the North Central LRT project to Council’s Trans-portation and Transit Committee on March 12, 2014. You can read the report on Calgary Transit’s Route Ahead website at www.routeahead.ca. Sincerely,

Ryan Murray, Transportation Planning
