WEATHERTurkey has a predominant Mediterranean climate, but, due to the large size of the country and its height differences, it can change from one region to another. The Turkish coast is characterized by a mild climate, with hot summers and mild winters, while in the country’s interior tends to be drier.

Turkey has four different seasons: spring, from March to May; summer, from June to August; autumn, from September to October; and winter, from December to February.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TOGET IN AND OUT _ To enter the country, you will need a valid passport, except in some exceptional cases. Moreover, as of

the 10th April 2014, it is mandatory to obtain the visa via internet through the Turkish Electronic Visa (e-Visa) Application System.

- The official language is Turkish, but we will not have any problems when communicating in English.

- In this country, taxis are yellow and the taximeter stars running at 2.95 euros. Also, we need to know that there isn’t a different night fare.

- It is forbidden to export cultural interest goods and antiques of an age exceeding one hundred years.

HOW TO MOVE AROUNDThe travel options we can choose range from a bike to go all over Istanbul or Ankara to the train or a simple bus. This last one is a good option because there is a modern intercity bus fleet that constantly travels across the country and its prices are quite reasonable.

_ The cheapest way to move around Istanbul is by ferry, because a ticket is just 2 Turkish liras (about 0.61 euro cents) and the ride from the European side to the Asiatic one takes just 20 minutes.

_ If you intend to move around by car, here are some details you should take into account:

-Vehicles drive on the right side of the road and overtake others on the left, the same as in other countries like Spain, France or Italy.

-The road signs follow the International Convention on Road Signs and Signals.

-You can find numerous service stations to refuel along the roads.

-Most of the cities have public parking areas and garages.

-If you find a sign in which it’s written “Park Yapilmaz”, this means “No Parking”. Also, the police has the authority to collect fines at the moment and place where an offence has been committed.

-There are roadside assistance centers “Türkiye Turing ve Otomobil Kurumu” (telephone number: 212 2828140).

-The legal speed limits are the following: 40 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h in suburban areas and 130 km/h in freeways.

-In this country there are several freeways that charge a toll fee. Some of the most important are the ones leading to Istanbul and to the most touristic regions like Izmir or Ankara. A toll fee is charged on the Bosporus bridges and on the Sultan Mehmet Bridge when crossing from Europe to Asia.

-The minimum legal age for driving a car in Turkey is 18, but you will have to be at least 21 if you need to rent a car as a tourist. Besides, young drivers under 25 pay a surcharge.

-You can rent a car through international companies like Avis o Europcar, or local companies and comparison sites like Turkeycar or Propercar.

For further information regarding the transport in Turkey, you can visit the Lonely Planet guide website.

We could tell you that, if you visit Istanbul, you can’t miss the Blue Mosque or the Spice Bazaar. We could also tell you that, outside of Istanbul, the most famous place is the Cappadocia, a region located in Central Anatolia famous for its peculiar (and extraordinary) geology. The thing is that you can obtain all of this information in any tourist guide, so here we will present to you a list of things you must see if you go to this country.

1. Enjoy the charms of the Cappadocia seen from a hot-air balloon. The flight can be made from the south of the Cappadocia, during the early hours of the morning, and takes about an hour.

2. Cross the Bosphorus Strait by boat. You can get a regular service boat that arrives to Anadolu Kavagi, close to the Black Sea.

3. Cross the Galata Bridge after having enjoyed the Spice Bazaar. All of this in Istanbul

4. Have a drink at a meyhane. They are typical Turkish bars.

5. Contemplate Hagia Sophia. This can seem a quite traditional plan but this Ortodox basilica re-used as a mosque and located in Istanbul has something special that makes it a must-see.

6. Explore the banks of the Golden Horn of Istanbul. The best and cheapest way is to take one of the local ferries that leave the harbor stations each half an hour approximately.

7. Visit the most significant library of the ancient world after the Ancient Library of Alexandria, the Library of Pergamum.

8. The ancient site of Ephesus. Located about 75 kilometers south of Smyrna (Izmir), this is one of the biggest archaeological sites of the world.

9. Pamukkale. It is a natural phenomenon of great beauty, located 250 kilometers away from Smyrna.

10. The ancient city of Troy, one of the most important in region of Anatolia.

You can have your routes planned in advance through the website of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Antalya raises over steep rocks in a gulf, by the Mediterranean Sea and sheltered by mountains. These follow the coastline southwest of the city, making up a beautiful landscape at the Beydağları Coastal National Park. Down there, between the sea and the rocks, there is still some space for beaches, small bays and wide spaces of clear sand and turquoise water.

Therefore, flying to Antalya and spending some days in this city could be a good option to start your trip. You can choose between moving around on public transport or in a rented car and, either way, you would need to spend three or four days to discover the city and its surroundings.

Once you’re there, you can visit and enjoy some of the beautiful spots that we suggest here.

_Mermerli, the closest beach and a small bay right inside the city, at the foot of the cliff.

_Konyaaltı, if you are looking for calm and for resting time on the sand.

_Düden Waterfalls. There are two, Lower and Upper Düden, but only the first ones are really worth a visit.

_Karpuzkaldiran Waterfalls, a really unique view.

_The old city, known as Kaleiçi, surrounds the Roman Harbour, with picturesque streets and historic houses. The Harbour itself is as photogenic as the rest, with its little boats docked at the port.

_Sculptures and monuments such as the Yivliminare Mosque, with its fluted minaret, the one with the broken minaret (Kesik Minare Mosque), the Hadrian’s Gate and the Clock tower (Saat Kulesi).

_Museums such as the Antalya Archeological Museum, also called Antalya Müsezi, the most important one in the city.

_Its bazaars, reduced into three areas; the Old Bazaar (Köseoğlu Giyim), the Main Market and the Isleke Market.

_Karaalioglu Park.

You can also enjoy in its surroundings:

_The Ancient City of Pergue, one of the most important ones.

TRAVEL TIPS_The bank holidays are: 1 January (New Year’s Day), 23 April (Children’s Day

and National Sovereignty Day), 19 May (Youth and Sports Day), 30 August (Victory Day) and 29 October (Republic Day).

_There are two Islamic celebrations during which the Administration, the banks, schools and businesses are closed. They are the “Ramazan Bayrami” (three-day celebration of the end of the Ramadan) and the “Kurban Bayrami” (four-day celebration of the Feast of Sacrifice). The dates change according to the Islamic calendar.

_During visits to mosques it is mandatory to take off your shoes and women have to cover their heads. Besides, avoiding entering the mosques on Fridays during the time of prayer is recommended. In some protected areas and near military installations taking pictures or recording is strictly prohibited. This may be prohibited in some museums as well.

_Tap water is not drinkable and we also have to be careful with the ice in our drinks because they are usually made of this water too.

_ Turkey operates with round-prong European-style plugs.

_Pharmacies open all over the country from 9 to 19h every day, except from Sundays. Moreover, we can find a pharmacy open 24/7 in every neighborhood.

_Generally, business hours are from Monday to Saturday, from 9:00 to 18:00.

WHAT IF I GET ILL?_The European Health Insurance Card is NOT valid in Turkey so, for temporary

travels, we recommend taking out a health insurance if you don’t already have one with your employment contract. A normal medical consultation in the private hospitals is usually 180 Turkish liras (about 52 euros).

_Healthcare is public in Turkey, but also semipublic, private and, in some cases, it is subsidiary of charitable organizations.

_The level of training of Turkish specialists is similar to the European standards.

_Check the most important hospitals in Ankara and Istanbul and get more information on this local website.

11

You can also enjoy in its surroundings:

_The Ancient City of Pergue, one of the most important ones in the world during the Hellenistic period.

_Kurşunlu Waterfalls.

_Aspendos Theatre, from the Greco-Roman period, built in 155 and the best-preserved theatre of antiquity.

_The small old town of Side and the area surrounding the ruins of Apollo’s and Athena’s temples.

_The Ancient City of Termessos, inside the Mount Güllük-Termessos National Park.

_Phaselis.

_Çıralı, another beach that will dazzle you.

_Demre and the church of St Nicholas of Myra.

_Kaleköy, a village that faces the island of Kekova. It is the best place to explore the bay of Kekova, which has clear waters and a particularity: here lies a Lycian necropolis, Simena, that is partially sunken underwater.

As we have already told you, when moving around there you will have to pay with Turkish liras, the legal tender of this country. With Global Exchange, you can exchange it for your currency at any of the branches we have at the arrival hall of the Antalya Airport.

BE CAREFUL WITH..._Areas with little or no traffic and with the most touristic ones.

_The different violent protests and demonstrations that have been taking place recently in the principal cities of Turkey. We recommend staying away from them and from the crowds.

_The current situation in Syria. It is discouraged to go within 10 kilometers from the border of this country.

_The refugee camps installed by the Turkish authorities in the border provinces with Syria.

_The entries to Turkey from Syria, as Turkish authorities can close the border points or restrict the traffic in them depending on the security situation at the Syrian side of the border.

_When getting a taxi. It is advisable to hire them at the hotel reception, where they usually know reliable people. We recommend following the advices and recommendations of the blog Enjoy Istanbul.

_Apart from this suggestions, Turkey is generally a very safe country and its crime rates are low.
