The noble aim of staying in touch with our mums, even if they are not on Twitter, inspired the idea for Tuiteamadres. The application uses the BlueVia SMS API to merge Twitter with text and is available in UK, México, Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

It takes just three steps to set-up: the user enters a twitter handle, the mother’s mobile number and then her country from the supported list (UK, Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Mexico at launch). Once done, each tweet tagged with #himum will appear on her handset as a text message. The user, not the mother, is the account holder who gets charged for each text message sent to the mother. The best part is that the developer earns a slice of the revenue from all of the messages sent. This revenue encourages the developer to invest further in improving the service. And it’s not just for mothers! A user can copy Tweets to any nominated number, perhaps a husband, wife or even a boss-!?

The Story Jose Rodríguez is a Java and Ruby developer, a geek at heart. He’s also an indie music fan, avid book reader and a good son.

Jose has spent most of his career as a [Telefónica R&D] development engineer working on social media projects. He currently works as a product manager for innovation initiatives.

“Social Networks are changing everything and evolving the way that we communicate with each other and even perceive reality. Twitter provides a fresh and immediate channel to interact with friends, colleagues or family. Unfortunately not all of our family members use Twitter; some of them don’t really know what it is. This is often the case with our mothers. Staying in touch with our mothers has become more challenging, not just for lack of time, but due to a growing gap in our communication habits.”

Tuiteamadres attempts to bridge the gap by facilitating the interaction between a native digital Twitter user and a traditional cell phone user. Whether connecting with a mum or someone else, Tuiteamadres allows both parties to stay in touch via their natural communication habits. After all, Twitter and Text use the same number of characters: 140.

“What I enjoyed the most about creating this service, thanks to the BlueVia capabilities, is creating the opportunity to join two different communication worlds in only one service”

BlueVia and TuiteamadresThe application uses the BlueVia SMS API, which not only avoids charging the developer for its usage, but actually generates revenue for the developer each time someone uses the service. The charge for sending texts from the application is added directly to the Movistar/O2 user’s monthly telephone bill at a rate similar to normal local rates.

“One of the main advantages of using BlueVia is that I can mix different business models to monetize the application from complimentary revenue streams, such as advertising or subscription. Not only can I use the API without charge, it offers me the chance to get a share of the revenues whilst reaching a large number of users across Telefonica. If it succeeds, I will also receive recurring revenues, taking me beyond the traditional downloads business model.”

This really simple, yet affective, application has been created from start to finish in only three weekends.
