Winx showed no signs of rust af-ter nearly four months off from

the races.In her first start since winning the

William Hill W.S. Cox Plate (G1) for a second straight year, Australia's reigning middle distance champion extended her win streak to 14 straight races with an easy three-length win over familiar rival Hartnell Feb. 13 in the AU$250,000 The Star Apollo Stakes (G2) at Royal Randwick.

The victory by Winx matches a win streak posted by Australian racing legend Phar Lap. Trainer Chris Waller told Australia's Daily Telegraph he was aware of the significance of 14 straight wins.

"I try not to read too much or listen too much about the records but I knew she was out to equal Phar Lap today,'' Waller told Daily Telegraph. "I try to keep it in perspective, Phar Lap backed up week in, week out over all distances.

"But we are not sheltering Winx, either. We are running in all the best races, but we do protect her in terms of how many runs she has each preparation."

Winx, a 5-year-old daughter of Street Cry, won all eight of her 2016 starts, which included six group 1 victories. Of her 14 consecutive wins, nine were at the highest level Australia has to offer.

In the clockwise-run Apollo, Winx came out of the gate near midpack, where she settled comfortably. Coming off the turn in the 1,400 meter (almost seven-furlong) race,

the leaders began to back up and Winx was taken to the outside where she found plenty of daylight in the straightaway. She was able to pull clear with Hartnell giving chase once again.

Guided to victory by her usual rider Hugh Bowman, Winx was impressive in her return, but Waller said there are always some butterflies.

"It is always good to get that first race over with and we can look ahead to the rest of her autumn campaign," Waller said.

Hartnell also finished second to Winx in the W.S. Cox Plate, where he was eight lengths back. Endless Drama picked up third on Monday.

The longest win streak by an Australian-based horse in major racing is three-time Australian Horse of the Year Black Caviar at 25.

Out of 24 races run, Winx has a record of 18-3-0 and earnings of AU$9,493,925 (US$7,285,640).

Bred in Australia by Fairway Thoroughbreds, Winx is out of the New Zealand-bred mare Vegas Showgirl.

She was purchased by Magic Bloodstock for the U.S. equivalent of $241,569 from the Coolmore Stud consignment to the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale. The mare races for Magic Bloodstock Racing, R. G. Treweeke, and Mrs. D. N. Kepitis. BH

Lucky Pulpit, the sire of two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome, died Feb. 13 of an appar-

ent heart attack while covering the first mare of the breeding season, according to Harris Farms, where he'd stood his entire career.

"He was the picture of health all day," said Dave McGlothlin, farm manager at Harris Farms. "He had a perfectly normal day. He and the teaser were talking smack to one another like they always did. We're all stunned."

The 16-year-old son of Pulpit—Lucky Soph, by Cozzene, was bred and raced by Larry and Marianne Williams. He won the Smile Stakes on the turf at Arlington International Race Course and placed in two graded stakes before retiring with $209,928 in earnings.

Lucky Pulpit entered stud at Harris Farms near Coalinga, Calif., for a $2,500 fee. He stood this year for $7,500.

Finally free of Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, Gun Runner had his first breeze at Oaklawn Park Feb. 13

in preparation for the $500,000 Razorback Handicap (G3).

Working five furlongs over the fast main track Monday, the 4-year-old was timed in :59 4/5, earning a bullet as the fastest among 10 working that distance.

The Razorback, at 1 1/16 miles on the Feb. 20 Presidents Day card at the Hot Springs, Ark., oval, will be the first start for Gun Runner since the Candy Ride colt scored a game victory over older horses in the Clark Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs in late November to cap a 3-year-old campaign in which he won or placed in eight of nine starts and earned more than $1.9 million.

Trained by Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen for Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm, Gun Runner missed an expected engagement in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) at Gulfstream Park because an outbreak of equine herpesvirus type-1 resulted in horses not being able to leave or enter the track while a quarantine was in effect. Other states and tracks also placed restrictions on horses that had been in Louisiana during the period.

"The background changes but he looks the same," Winchell Thoroughbreds racing manager David Fiske said after watching the Feb. 13 work video. "He's pretty remarkable. He just goes out there and does his thing every time."

Fiske said the biggest disappointment with Gun Runner missing the Pegasus

was the lost opportunity to assess the colt's status for the $10 million Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1).

"That was a frustrating experience," Fiske said of the Fair Grounds situation. "But in racing there are some things you have control of and some you don't, and you can't get too worked up over the things you have no control over.

"The only reservation we had with the whole thing is we would like to have run him within that time frame so we could have gotten some sort of handle on whether to go to Dubai or not. That time frame is somewhat compressed now."

Fiske said representatives of Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys would confer with Asmussen following the Razorback to determine if the World Cup is still a "go."

"We try to keep everything under consideration all the time," Fiske said of the decision-making for Gun Runner's next start. "A horse like him—there are only a few places where you would consider running him. It is pretty easy to map out a campaign for a horse of his ability." BH

Jerkens, the 4-year-old son of Candy Ride—Union City, by Dixie Union, won three of his four starts last year, including the Bay Shore Stakes (G3) and the Peter Pan Stakes (G2), where he clocked nine furlongs in 1:47.14.

"Unified has lived up to all we thought from the beginning when he was showcased by Lane's End at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale," said Don Little Jr., president of Centennial Farms. He credited Dr. Steve Carr and Paula Parsons for selecting the colt, who sold for $325,000. "We look forward to his future success and could not be more thrilled knowing upon retirement, he will have a stall at Lane's End bringing his journey full circle."

Unified was bred in Kentucky by Blue Devil Racing. Stakes-placed Union City is a full sister to the

Demoiselle Stakes (G2) winner Dixie City. Unified is from the immediate family of champion 2-year-old and sire Dehere.

Multiple graded stakes winner and sire Albert the Great has been retired from stud duties and is

settling into Old Friends Thoroughbred retirement farm in Georgetown, Ky.

After arriving Feb. 4 from Pin Oak Lane Stud in New Freedom, Pa., the 20-year-old stallion is adjusting well to his new life, according to Old Friends founder Michael Blowen.

"He knows who he is. He came in for a few days and was very studdish, but now he's settled in very nicely," Blowen said. "He's one paddock over from Charismatic, one paddock over from War Emblem, and one paddock over from Silver Charm. He's got good company."

Campaigned by Tracy Farmer, the son of Go for Gin retired from racing with a 8-6-4 record from 22 starts, 15 of which were made in graded stakes, and more than $3 million in earnings.

As a 3-year-old, he won the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) and the Dwyer Stakes (G2), and was a head short of picking up a victory in the Travers Stakes (G1). The next year, he took the Widener Handicap (G3) at Hialeah Park in track-record time, won the Suburban and Brooklyn handicaps (both G2), and ran second in four other grade 1 contests, including the Woodward and Whitney stakes.

Albert the Great entered stud in 2002 at Three Chimneys Farm. Since 2008, he has been at Pin Oak

Lane, where his 2016 fee was $2,500. From 13 crops of racing age, he has sired 216 winners and eight black-type winners, including grade 1 winners Moonshine Mullin, who stands in Arkansas; Albertus Maximus, who stands at Shadwell Farm; and Nobiz Like Shobiz, who was retired from stud and moved to Old Friends in the fall.

Blowen said that he had been working with the stallion's owners, Tracy and Carol Farmer, to get Albert the Great to Old Friends for some time.

"He's been on the waiting list for months," Blowen said. "Tracy Farmer and Carol Farmer have been so great to us. I really liked him as a racehorse, so he's very special."

Old Friends expects Albert the Great—and some of their other new high-profile additions such as Charismatic—to be a big draw for the racing fans who come to tour the farm.

"I think people like to come to see the new horses," Blowen said. "Whether they are $3,500 claimers or they are stakes winners, they like to come and see the new ones.

"I just want to thank everybody for trusting us with these horses." BH

CHURCHILL DOWNS PICKS UP TWO ARLINGTON STAKESBy BloodHorse Staff

As strange as it sounds, the Chicago Handicap (G3) will be contested at Churchill Downs this season.

The seven-furlong race for fillies and mares planned for June 24, as well as the Matron Handicap (G3), for fillies and mares going 1 1/8 miles on the main track set for May 20, will both be moved from Arlington International Racecourse this year.

Both tracks are owned by Churchill Downs Inc. and Arlington announced Feb. 3 the two grade 3 stakes would be dropped from its schedule in 2017 as more money there is committed to overnight purses.

"We're very happy to add a pair of stakes events from Arlington Park that would otherwise have gone on hiatus at our sister track and look forward to welcoming horsemen and owners from throughout the Midwest and beyond to compete in those races and all of the special events on our spring meet stakes schedule," said Churchill racing secretary Ben Huffman.

The addition of the two Arlington stakes lifted total stakes purses offered during the upcoming Churchill meet by $200,000 from the $8.64 million offered during the 2016 spring meet.

Topped by the $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1), 35 stakes races will offer $8.84 million in total purses scheduled during Churchill Downs racetrack's 38-day spring meet in 2017.

"We're very pleased with the stakes schedule Churchill Downs has assembled for the 2017 spring meet and we hope our horsemen in Kentucky and throughout North America will share in our enthusiasm," Huffman said. "Our racing programs for Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks Days continue to rank among the most lucrative in American racing, and our overall stakes program offers attractive options in almost every racing division."

The 2017 spring racing session will be launched by an "Opening Night" racing extravaganza April 29, presented by Stella Artois and Old Forester, and will conclude with racing under the lights June 30.

The schedule is highlighted by three multi-stakes programs with total purses in excess of $1 million among nine racing programs that feature two or more stakes races. The Kentucky Derby heads a powerhouse line-up of seven stakes events May 6 that features three grade 1 events and total purses of $4.15 million. The Kentucky Oaks day program on the eve of Derby Day offers six stakes events with combined purses of $2.2 million.

The "Downs After Dark" program under the lights June 17, presented Stella Artois and El Jimador, features the $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) for 3-year-olds and up, which tops a roster of five stakes contests with total purses of $1.1 million.

Of the 35 stakes races set for the meet, six have been designated as grade 1 events by the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. Along with the

Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks, and Stephen Foster Handicap, the roster of grade 1 events includes the $500,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic for 4-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles on grass, the $300,000 Humana Distaff for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and up at seven furlongs, and the $300,000 La Troienne Presented by Spirited Funds, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and up.

The schedule includes seven stakes races designated as grade 2 events, 12 grade 3 stakes races, and one listed contest. Thirteen are scheduled to be run over the Matt Winn Turf Course. BH

votes to move him to the top of the 3-year-old poll for Feb. 13.

Winning the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) in record time, the son of Ghostzapper brought his record to four for four and is tied with El Areeb and Gormley with 20 points each toward the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The 20 horses with the most points earn a spot in the starting gate May 6.

McCraken bumps Irish War Cry, the Feb. 4 winner of the Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (G2), into the second spot, while the colt with the most points on the Derby trail, Classic Empire, remains in third.

The NTRA Top 3-Year-Old Poll is the sport's most comprehensive survey of experts ranking the

generation of Thoroughbreds that includes all Triple Crown contenders. Every week eligible journalists and broadcasters cast votes for their top 10 horses, with points awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. The Top 3-Year-Old Poll concludes June 12 after the Belmont Stakes (G1). BH

STALLION SOUTHWESTERN HEAT DIESBy BloodHorse Staff

A & A Ranch reported Feb. 13 the loss last month of its improving sire Southwestern Heat due to colic.

Southwestern Heat, a graded stakes-placed winner by Gone West, was the first foal and first stakes winner produced by champion Xtra Heat (by Dixieland Heat), who was inducted into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame in 2015.

The 13-year-old stallion was reportedly taken to Jenson Clinic Jan. 13 after showing signs of discomfort. He was euthanized after it was determined that he would not survive surgery, according to the farm.

Southwestern Heat finished 2016 as the third-leading New Mexico sire by earnings, giving A & A Ranch a sweep of the top three spots on the state's general leading sire list with leader Attila's Storm and second-ranked Diabolical. Out of five crops to race, he's sired 34 winners, including leading earner and black-type stakes winner Bryn's Fancy Pants, who has earned nearly $250,000 and is still racing.

Xtra Heat won or placed in 32 black-type stakes from 2000 through 2003. She was named 2001 Eclipse champion 3-year-old filly after winning the Prioress Stakes (G1), Stonerside Beaumont Stakes (G2), and the Cicada Stakes (G3). She also placed second in the Penske Auto Center Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) and the Test Stakes (G1). She has produced three black-type runners and two other winners out of nine foals to race. BH

MIDNIGHT HAWK TO JAMAICA'S RISING SUN FARMBy BloodHorse Staff

Midnight Hawk, winner of the Sham Stakes (G3), has been retired to stand at Rising Sun Farm near

Portmore, Jamaica.The 6-year-old son of Midnight Lute—Miss

Wineshine, by Wolf Power, won the Sham at Santa Anita Park in his second career start.

A 6 1/4-length winner in his debut in a 7 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Hollywood Park, Midnight Hawk went on to place in five other graded stakes at 3 for owners Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings, breeder Mike Pegram, NHL Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville, and Blackhawk's assistant coach Mike Kitchen.

He was second to California Chrome in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) and was also runner-up in the Sunland Derby (G3) and Illinois Derby (G3). At 4, he placed second in the Razorback Handicap (G3). Midnight Hawk won five races and retires with nearly $592,000 in earnings.

His dam is a grade 1-placed stakes winner who has produced four other winners including black-type stakes winner Mister Marv (Distorted Humor). She is also a full sister to multiple stakes winner Delta Wolf and half sister to three other black-type stakes-placed winners.

Midnight Hawk will stand alongside the grade 1-placed Rising Moon at Rising Sun Farm. The deal was brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock. BH

This question was posed in an email I re-ceived last week from the New York Racing

Association: Do you know what makes a great Valentine's Day gift?

Although I agree with NYRA, two nice seats to the Belmont Stakes would make a swell gift, I hasten to add that a great Valentine's Day gift in the eye of the gander may shrivel—even when presented with all due love and affection—beneath the withering eye of the goose.

I don't blame NYRA for working every angle in trying to sell their top-shelf product. Maybe they expect men to forward this pitch to their significant others, while adding a none-too-subtle "hint." Or maybe NYRA's research shows that male bettors who suddenly find themselves single in mid-February compensate by really sending it in through their NYRABets accounts throughout the lonely spring.

Or maybe this is what happens when you market your product one way to the lesser half of the population (Betting! Beer!) and another way to the better half (Fashion! Hats!).

The presumption that betting the races is an activity peculiar to the male of the species seems to be a stubbornly-held belief. Sadly, this tends to result in a marketing approach that not only reinforces tired cultural stereotypes, but too often manages to casually insult the existing female minority in the grandstand.

Consider this recent tweet from the Belmont Stakes account: "Hey, Fashionistas—It may be #NYFW (New York Fashion Week) now but when June 8th-10th rolls around get ready to Dress To Impress!" Embedded in the tweet is a 20-second video that—without any apparent irony—touts "BIG

HATS" and "BEST FASHION" with nary a horse in sight.

To its credit, NYRA does make great use of its excellent paddock analyst, Maggie Wolfendale (of the Maryland Wolfendales). And last summer's Saratoga Race Course meet benefitted greatly from the addition of Gabby Gaudet (another smart daughter of a racing family), who provided a nice balance to the acquired taste that is NYRA's lead racing analyst, Andy Serling.

I only wish that NYRA would devote as much time to the magnificence of the Thoroughbred and the thrills racing offers as they do to encouraging young women to dress fancy.

This observer of the racing scene is encouraged by what seems to be an ever-growing number of women on the business side of the industry, whether in ownership, training, riding, broadcasting, journalism, or even that last bastion of male dominance, public handicapping.

It would be nice to see that carry over into the grandstand. My business career is winding down. Soon I'll be a pensioner with more time to spend at the races, where the preponderance of men can get tiresome. Having more women there would be great. I wouldn't even mind if they didn't dress fancy. BH s Share this story
