Dear Parents, I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and care last week when a colleague was unfortunately taken unwell. We all wish her a very speedy recovery. Along with her family, she extends her gratitude to the professionalism and nurture expressed by the whole school community. Please find some useful updates from each of our Year Groups, which we include in this newsletter for you below. I will shortly be pleased to announce a weekly drop-in for parents. This will provide a regular diary time when parents can pop in with- out an appointment to discuss any additional help we can provide for you and your family. I offer my very best wishes for the week ahead. This week in Reception

We have been focusing on listening skills and identifying the initial sounds of words.

We’ve played lots of different alliteration games and have been sorting objects into

groups. We’ve explored single digits numbers in maths through stories and have

been counting objects to 10. The children have reflected upon each of the numbers

and shared ways in which they are significant to them. Our Autumn topic has includ-

ed a walk to observe changes in the trees outside and we have been collecting

leaves to create rubbings of them.

This week in Year 1

We have been learning about each of the senses. We have been on a walk to record what

we could see, hear, touch and smell around the school. We have been choosing different ob-

jects in our classrooms so we can develop our abilities to describe them and have been smell-

ing different foods to guess what they are. We are practising reading and writing words and

sentences using the Phase 3 sounds x, y and z. We have been describing ourselves using our

words and sentences. In maths, we have been counting up and down, ordering number

cards to 20, matching amounts and practising writing our numbers.

This week in Year 2

This week, the children have completed their first piece of extended writing for the year.

They have all written imaginative letters to explain why somebody might have been absent

from school. From monkeys stealing lunchboxes, to becoming stranded in the middle of an

overgrown forest! Meanwhile, in mathematics place value remained at the heart of our

learning, being the ‘key’ to developing fluency in calculation processes. We also continued

our studies in science, hypothesising about which materials we think are absorbent. This of

course led to an afternoon of scientific experimentation! Reading is also central to our

learning and we have worked alongside each child to ensure they are accessing the cor-

rect level of texts at home. We hope that you enjoy these books over the weekend.

Constable class will hold another opportunity for any parents who had their appointments

postponed last week, to meet with Mr Hillier between 3:30pm - 5:30pm on Monday 30th

September. Please see Mr Hillier if you wish to reschedule.

Together we nurture the future.

This week in Year 3

This week, Year 3 have been looking at how people would have foraged for

food during the Stone Age. Year 3 had an enjoyable trip to Dame Anthony's

Common where we were able to gather blackberries and observe the local

flora and fauna. To continue the Stone Age theme; in English the children

have been studying the novel 'Stig of the Dump' They have scrutinised the

text before recreating 'Stig's Cave' using shading techniques and pencil

colours. In maths, children have been using their place value skills to order

numbers in both ascending and descending order. Pupils have also revisited

writing their numbers in digits as well as in words, finishing the week by find-

ing 10/100 more/less than a given number. In Science, we have been look-

ing at 'Animals including Humans' and discussed what contributes to a

healthy diet. Morris class also enjoyed their first visit to the Waterside Pool

and their first swimming session was to assess the skills that they may already

possess.

Well done children you have all had a very busy and productive week!

This week in Year 4

Children have been developing their poetry skills. They

have taken inspiration form their research on the pyramids

and Ancient Egypt, in order to construct pyramid—shaped

poems! In Science, children have been learning about the

digestive system and predicting which items represented

each part of the digestive system. “I think the tights could

be the oesophagus because they are long”, “I think the

scissors are the teeth because they are sharp.” They then

followed Miss Howard’s instructions and followed the jour-

ney of the banana and crackers through the process of

digestion.

This week in Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been creating Viking mythical creatures and writing a character de-

scription. We have looked at the significance of Anglo-Saxon kings (King Alfred the Great

and King Athelstan) during the Viking period. The children also explained who King Ethelred

II was and why Danegeld was introduced.

In Science, the children have been learning about properties of materials in Hockney class,

whilst Ayres class have been focusing on thermal conductors and insulators. The children

have enjoyed investigating the best thermal insulator for the lining of a lunchbox.

In Maths, we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and

1,000,000. We have been working with negative numbers and adding/subtracting using

mental strategies, as well as introducing the relationship between fractions and decimal

numbers.

Together we nurture the future.

This week in Greenhaven

We are delighted to announce that Greenhaven students were awarded the top prize in

the school section of the Ryde in Bloom competition.

They attended the prize giving ceremony, receiving a certificate and Presentation Cup

for the school. Greenmount also received £200 to spend on future equipment to further

develop the outdoor space.

Congratulations to all the Greenhaven Staff and children!

This week in Year 6

PTA News

Year 6 have been working really hard this week.

English: We have been learning about the importance of using different language for effect

(adverbials, noun phrases, powerful verbs, and figurative language) to enable us to write a descriptive

and engaging setting for the opening of our story.

Maths: Year 6 have been learning about negative numbers in various contexts (temperature, under-

ground buildings, money owed) and solving reasoning problems and puzzles.

Science: We have been learning about the components in a circuit. The children created different

functioning circuits in their groups. If the circuit wasn’t working, the children were quick to fix the prob-

lem. Working together, they identified which component was responsible for the break in the flow of

energy.

History: We were learning about the Blitz during WWII and how Britain was able to prevent these at-

tacks. They will soon be writing an eye-witness account of the Blitz, discussing what people saw, felt

and heard during the eleven weeks of the air raids.

Message from our retiring Chair Laura Holme -

The PTA plays a valuable role in the school, providing events for families and children to enjoy whilst raising much needed funds

for extra activities or equipment that is needed in the school. As I step down from my role this year to hand over to a new com-

mittee, I am reflecting on all that has happened in the past 12 months.

We held a number of events other the year including discos, craft clubs, film night, magic afternoon, and of course our all excit-

ing Christmas fayres. Amazingly, we raised well over £3600. All of the money has gone back into the school, including:

Isle Dance costumes, Sports Team T-Shirts, Mardi Gras, Class Present for Christmas, The School Christmas Tree Space Project

sleepover breakfast, End of Year Disco for leavers, 100% attendance rewards, 5p Challenge winners Picnic, new buildings and

sheds for the playground area - some of which are still to come.

So, I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for supporting and helping out with our events and enhancing your children's

time at the school and I do hope you'll continue to do so for the next school year. The PTA welcomes everyone involved in the

school, so if you feel you can help in anyway please get in touch with the team

Thank You all again. I wish the new committee of Katie Gaskin, Kathy Collison and Becky Dollery all the best.

Laura

Thank you to Laura from all of us at Greenmount.

I am pleased to announce that Greenmount won both games with strong performances from all

the pupils involved

Greenmount 1-0 Wootton scored by Archie.

Overview of the match by Mr Harris -

“ Two great performances with well taken goals and some great goal keeping”. We now play in the

Isle of Wight finals on 26/9 at Queensgate.
