The committee is responsible for recruiting and training new ministers, and coordinating and scheduling all of the liturgical ministries at the parish-altar server, sacristan, ushers, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and lectors. We also work closely with the pastoral staff and our Director of Liturgy to coordinate any and all liturgical celebrations we have at St. Eugene. Pastoral Council - The Pastoral Council (PC) advises and consults with the pastor about the overall direction of our church to fulfill the mission of Jesus and meet the needs of our parishioners and beyond. The PC consists of 13 members. Our members serve as liaisons, exchanging ideas with the St. Eugene standing committees, the Finance Council and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Friends: Last October, while on vacation after the Canon Law Society of American annual convention, I visited a small gallery of religious art in Scottdale, AZ. There, I purchased two prints which now hang in the living room and dining room of the rectory. One is a Da Vinci sketch of Our Lady with her cousin Elizabeth and the very young Jesus and John. The other is a rendering of Henry Ossawa Tanner’s “The Annunciation.” It is a beautiful piece of art which reflects one of the most pivotal moments in all of salvation history. Tanner’s work is very interesting. While it gives an impression of a renaissance European work, it was actually painted in the United States in 1897. While anything Marian is a very Catholic theme, Tanner was actually the son of a freed slave become minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. While we often imagine the archangel Gabriel to be a messenger with the strong Michael-like form of a warrior and Mary demurring in simplicity (or even fear), Tanner’s angel is but a pillar of light, and for him the future Blessed Mother is mature, maybe perplexed, but certainly inquisitive. There is so much contained within the painting, that it cannot be well-addressed here. But a few things to note: The pillar of light is reminiscent of the pillar of fire which Abraham saw when establishing the covenant, and clearly related to the burning bush seen by Moses. Tanner knew that the moment he painted was both absolutely new and yet, a fulfillment of all of Jewish history. Mary herself has no halo, no aura. While her bed and clothing reflect having been suddenly awakened, her room (and presumably, her life) is simple, yet orderly. Most importantly, her demeanor has a serenity of a kind to be seen again in Michelangelo’s Pieta. As noted above, the Annunciation is one of the most pivotal moments in salvation history. While Our Lady was immaculately conceived so that she would be a worthy

vessel for the birth of Our Lord, such did not eliminate her human freedom. It might sound odd to us, but Mary did not have to say yes to this request. But, whether it would have been beyond our imagining, or beyond her willful love of God, how could anything else have been the course of history – human or divine. When the Lord, in prayer or discernment, announces to us his plan for our lives, I hope that I might be as serene as was Our Lady. I hope that all of us in vocation and sacrament, see a fulfillment of the plans of the past, and a near exponential amount of promise for the future. Tomorrow, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. We must understand that Gabriel’s message to Mary, is a message to all of us; Mary’s agreement (her fiat) is to be our agreement; the promise of the coming of a Savior, is a promise made to us. How wonderful it is that we have this feast to celebrate. Yours in Christ,

LENTEN PROJECT 2019

SCHOOL NOTES The Lenten season began with Ash Wednesday Mass for the school and parish on March 6th, and in the days since then, St. Eugene students have had many opportunities for Lenten observances. First of all, during Lent, all Friday hot lunch options are meatless. Fr. Paul and Fr. Andrew will be available periodically to the 3rd - 8th graders for reconciliation during the school day. Students also have the opportunity to spend more time in church in Eucharistic Adoration and praying at the Stations of the Cross. The 8th graders will be performing the Living Stations of the Cross in the church on April 16th at 2 pm and 6:30 pm. This is also the rescheduled Grandparents/Special Friends day, so we look forward to having all of our visitors attend this moving rendition of the Stations. Parishioners are encouraged to join us as well, so please mark your calendars. If you see our students walking around out of uniform on Fridays during Lent, please congratulate them on their generosity. All school students are encouraged to bring in a minimum donation of $2 each week for three weeks in March to support the piglet project for our sister parish in Uganda, Our Lady Queen of Apostles. Each student who donates receives a Friday out-of-uniform pass. The St. Eugene faculty and staff are taking time to observe the holy season of Lent as well. During these 40 days, they are invited to say the rosary in church every Monday morning before the school day begins. They have also been receiving emailed Lenten reflections twice per week.

Currently, the faculty and staff are doing a book study of the memoir, Something Other than God. Written by author and speaker Jennifer Fulwiler, this bestseller recounts her faith journey from an atheist upbringing to greater fulfillment in a life of Christianity. The readers will meet on April 30th to discuss the book.

We are continuing to support the Sustainable Agriculture program for our sister parish Our Lady Queen of Apostles in Nkokonjeru, Uganda. Due to the generous hearts of the St. Eugene Parishioners, the agriculture programs have been thriving. The money raised this year will again go towards their piggery project so that the pig sty can be completed and they will also be able to buy good breeds of piglets. The pigs provide much needed manure that is a rich fertilizer for growing crops as well as protein/meat for their diets. A little money goes a long way in Uganda. When the people are able to grow crops for their own diets, they then have surplus to sell at markets. With the extra money, they then can send their children to school, buy clothing, other food items and medications. Here is a photo of some of the children that benefit from the Sustainable Agriculture relationship. The children greeted the recent travelers from St. Eugene and are from a far sub-parish on Lake Victoria (Ssenyi landing site). Donations can be put in the houses in the Narthex or checks can be sent to the parish office with "Lenten Project" in the memo line. You can also donate online. Father will also visit the home, hospital, or nursing home to administer this sacrament when requested, call the parish office. PARENTS WITH YOUNG CHILDREN God put the wiggle in children, so don’t feel like you have to suppress it in God’s house. If you need to leave the Mass, please feel free to do so. The Holy Innocents Chapel is a good place to go with a fidgety child. Please come back into the assembly when your child is settled! If you would like to nurse or feed your child in a quiet area, please use the Usher’s Room. There is a private corner set aside for nursing mothers.

THE HOLY INNOCENTS CHAPEL While the Church is locked during the day for security reasons, the Holy Innocents Chapel remains open for prayer Monday through Friday from 7am to 4pm. During Mass, the Holy Innocents Chapel is recommended for parents with distressed children.
