—–-—–—–————–—————–-—–——————Stoneham Bank—Money Smart for Older Adults

Friday, June 8— 12:00 p.m. with Lunch Financial exploitation has been called “the crime of the 21st century” with one study suggesting that old-er Americans lost at least $2.9 billion to financial exploitation in 2010 by a broad spectrum of perpetrators, including persons they know and trust, as well as strangers. This epidemic is under the radar. The cases tend to be complex and difficult to investigate and prosecute. Elders who lose their life savings usually have little or no opportunity to regain what they have lost.

Awareness is the first step. Money Smart for Older Adults, presented by Stoneham Bank, is designed to provide you with information & tips to help prevent common frauds, scams & other types of elder financial exploitation. A light lunch will be served. Call 978-671-0916 to sign up.

Too Much Old Stuff? How to Bust the Clutter!

It accumulates. Over the years, a combination of sentimental objects, things we’ll use one day, the vestiges of a former life and too many years of tax returns, newspaper clippings, little gifts we never used. There are obvious reasons to declutter. • Safety: Clutter can trip us up. • Efficiency: With declining eyesight, it get hard to

find things we use everyday. • Focus: Messy environments can make it hard to

process information. But the best reason to declutter comes from “Ms. Fix-it” Jennifer Phelps in Houzz, the online resource for home design and organization. “When your house is full of things from your past, things that only remind you of who you were, you very literally have no room for who you are now and who you are becoming.”

Why Is It So Hard to Do? Whether you want to pare down the stuff in your home, garage, or even your computer storage, one problem is knowing where to start. For some of us, getting rid of stuff is actually painful. A recent Yale study found for some of us, parts of our brains react the same way to the anticipated loss of valued possessions, as they do to the idea of quitting an addiction. How to Start Decluttering Enter Sara Getzkin, President of ‘Hands On!Organizing.’ As a professional organizer, Getzkin has been on the TLC show “Hoarding: Buried Alive.”

1. Don’t try to tackle too much at once. Getzkin tells her clients, “Let’s carve out three hours and see what we get done.” Then you are going to rest and not even think about this.” Very few people can sustain focus for more than three hours, and stopping before you get stuck means you can start again tomorrow feeling positive.

2. To start, Getzkin, recommends preparing three bags or boxes and labeling them KEEP, TOSS and SELL/DONATE. You might add a fourth box for things that need repairing, mending or dry cleaning, but don’t add more options than that.

3. Decide what you really use and consider what storage space is available. Be relentless in your decision-making and follow through.

4. Find local consignment stores to sell stuff that’s in great condition. Craigslist is a good option for

selling locally. eBay is good for more valuable stuff. Source: seniorplanet.org *** Outreach Supervisor, Jeanne Teehan, recently completed a 3-day training ‘Hidden Treasures Workshop’—watch for possible upcoming seminar at the BCOA!

Recipe of the Month: Healthy Breakfast Idea

Directions: If not eating immediately, brush apple slices with lemon juice to keep them from turning brown. Spread one side of half of the apple slices with peanut or almond butter, then sprinkle with chocolate chips and granola. Top with remaining apple slices, pressing down gently to make the sandwiches. Friends of the Billerica Council on Aging, Inc.

Greetings Friends,

What a busy month May was! Not only did Spring finally arrive, but we celebrated Mother’s Day and we honored our Senior of the Year winners and the runners-ups on May 4th.

We would also like to thank the many generous supporters who made the Senior of the Year Award possible. This year the event took place at the Elks Hall on May 4th. The Seniors of the year were Kay and Jerry Johnson. We also honored the other nominees Maureen Clotz and Bob Kinsman. It was a wonderful evening recognizing the contributions seniors make to our community among town leaders, selectmen, business partners, local citizens and families.

The event was planned and delivered by the BCOA Board of Directors and the Friends of the BCOA Board. The Friends of the Billerica BCOA is a 501©(3) organization whose sole pur-pose is to raise annual funds in support of the many programs and services provided by the BCOA. The BCOA sees some 140 patrons each day and is committed to preserving their dignity, independence and wellness. Also working with a number of health and community organizations we help families locate the right resources to take care of their elders.

The Senior of the Year award is not a fundraiser, but rather, an opportunity to say thank you to those who do so much for our community. We would like to thank the following individuals and corporate contributors to this event:
