    LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING

    Verse 1

Li evry voice and sing, Till earth and

Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of

Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise high as the

Listning skies, Let it resound loud as the

Rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that

The dark past ha taught us, Sing a song

    Full of the hope that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

Let us march on ll victory is won.

    Verse 2

Stony the road we trod, Bi er the chastning rod,

Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet

with a steady beat, have not our weary feet Come

to the place for which our people sighed? We have

    come over a way that with tears has Been watered;

we have come, treading our path Through theblood of the slaughtered; Out from the gloomy

past, Till now we stand at last Where the bright

gleam of our bright star is cast.

    Verse 3

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,

    Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;

Thou who hast by Thy might, Led us into the light,

Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet

stray from the places, our God, Where we met

Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with The wine of the

world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy

hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, true

    to our na ve land.

The History ofLi Every Voice And Sing

In 1900, James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond

Johnson composed a tribute to Abraham Lincoln

tled Li Every Voice and Sing. While si ng in

a rocking chair on their front porch, J. Rosamond

jo ed down the words and passed them through

an open window to his brother James, who wasseated at the piano. The song, o en called the

Black Na onal Anthem, was fi rst sung at gradu-

a on exercises in the Jacksonville, Florida high

school where their mother, who was the fi rst Black

woman to teach in the Florida public school system,

taught. Ini ally, the song was pasted in the backs

of hymnals in a few Black churches. Today, Li EveryVoice and Sing has received na onal recogni on

and is the offi cial song of the NAACP. As the s r-

ring rhythm and words of Li Every Voice and Sing

con nues to reach the hearts of all humanity, it is

also a constant reminder of the importance of the

    events that shaped our history.

The special drum, percussion, and conga musical selec on combines many of the styles

that are deriva ve of na ve African and Caribbean beats. Listen closely, and you will hear:

The fi ve stroke "clave" rhythmic pa ern associated with many Afro-Cuban rhythms, such as the rumba,

mambo, salsa and La n jazz. Origina ng in sub-Saharan African music tradi ons, it is also found in Hai-

an vodou drumming and Afro-Brazilian music.

The beats of the Samba are considered the most popular Brazilian cultural expressions. In addi on to

a musical expression, samba brings a wealth of cultural infl uences in food, dances, clothes, and even

    pain ng.

Limbo is a dance origina ng in Trinidad with a musical tradi on based on the "clave." The name comes

from the Trinidad and Barbados word limba, which means to bend, or from tradi onal English limber.

This dance is also used as a funeral dance and may be related to the African legba or legua dance.

Calypso is a musical style of Trinidad and Tobago, refl ec ve of their mul -ethnic background. It origi-

nated as part of Canboulay, the celebra ons that slaves started because the French colonizers would

not allow them to par cipate in their Carnival. African s ck fi gh ng and percussion music was banned

in 1880 in response to the Canboulay riots, but in 1937, reappeared as an orchestra of frying pans, dust-

bin lids and oil drums . . . these form the essence of the steel drum bands we know today.

    A Word from the Pastor

    Dear Trinity Family,

Recently, I was engaged in a wonderful discussion with a member of Trinity. We talked about the

marvelous work of the Prison Ministry, the incredible dedica on of the Deacon Ministry, and the

crea vity of the Worship and Arts Team. Our parishioner made the comment, I enjoy the fact you

teach on the same subject and scripture each service. It gives my family (they a end diff erent services)

an opportunity to discuss the same scripture and subject when we gather for dinner. I said thank you

and we con nued our conversa on.

It was this past week, when one of our dedicated Deacons asked me, Why do you preach the same

message at all three services? It dawned on me, I understood the why, but my friend assumed the

why. I shared with my friend that we have three diff erent services with three diff erent demographics:

churched, un-churched, and post-churched parishioners. I preach the same message to lay the

groundwork for the en re congrega on to learn, refl ect, and study from the same sheet of music.

My Deacon friend thanked me and said, I fi gured as much, but un l you stated it, I could not know

    defi ni vely.

I recognize this is a departure for some, since our Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.,

preached three diff erent messages each Sunday; I might add, because of Dr. Wrights brilliance. He is

one of the few ministers in the country who preached three diff erent messages on Sunday during his

    tenure as pastor.

Those who have been at Trinity prior to the construc on of the 400 building remember the preaching of

mul ple messages was an evolu on in ministry, not a revolu on. At one point during our ministry, only

one message was preached and when Trinity began to broadcast on television, mul ple messages were

ins tuted. I say all of this just to reiterate the goal ofbeing on one accord.

As we move through this year of Jubilee, let us remember, diff erent is NOT defi cient.

    Asking you to imagine

The stock market has rebounded to near its

pre-recession peak. Corporate profi ts are at

record highs. But for millions of American

workers who have lost jobs, health insurance, homes, and fi nancial security, the crisis con nues.

Congress must make job crea on its highest

    priority.

Many families are caught in a quagmire

of fi nancial and emo onal pain. Three years into

the Great Recession, the unemployment rate is

9.0%. But this measure includes only people whoare ac vely searching for work, some 13.9 million.

It omits those who have given up looking, decided

to be stay-at-home moms since they have no other

op ons, or claim to be re red to conceal their

fears of never working again. A broader measure

that counts everyone who wants a job plus people

who want full- me work when they can fi nd only

a part- me job is over twice as large: 30 million

people or nearly one in fi ve poten al workers.

There are roughly four job seekers for every job

opening and nearly half the unemployed have been

without a job for over six months. Among people of

color, young adults, and teenagers, the jobless rate

is much higher. Workers and their families are in

crisis. To keep pace with growth in the labor

force, the number of jobs must rise by 114

thousand each month. But over the past year

the U.S. averaged just 82 thousand a month. This

is too few to keep joblessness from rising (no

ma er what the offi cial counts tell us) and does

not begin to shrink the backlog of unemployment.

Going forward, even if job crea on were double

the rate of last year, it would take 19 years for

unemployment to fall to its pre-recession level. We

cannot wait for corporate decision makers and the

market to solve this crisis.Congress and the Obama Administra on

must intervene to create jobs. Op ons include a tax

credit to encourage fi rms to boost hiring, funds for

state and local governments to ease their budget

woes and reduce the need for layoff s, grants to

send workers back to school, and a public jobs

program where the government directly hiresworkers. There is much work that needs to be

done, from cleaning up brown fi elds in our ci es

to weatherizing homes and making repairs in our

na onal parks. Lets put people to work doing the

things that need to be done.

Crea ng jobs costs money and cri cs

argue we cannot aff ord this when the federal defi cit

is already high. But we cannot aff ord not to. Most

of the defi cit is caused by the economic downturn.

Unemployed people earn li le money and pay

few taxes, reducing government revenues. At the

same me, government expenses rise as millions of

people are forced to rely on safety net programs.

Once people are working again, much of the defi cit

will disappear. (In the longer term, the defi cit willreturn and will need to be addressed.) The me

to reduce the defi cit is when the emergency is

over, when the economy on Main Street, as well as

the economy on Wall Street, is sound. Right now,

Congress and the Obama Administra on must

create jobs and put people back to work.

ME! A CARETAKER!This is my home and this is my family. Im no caretaker.

That would probably be our reac on if someone came to us and tried to tell us that the things we have donot really belong to us. And yet, that is exactly what the Bible tells us. In Psalm 24:1, we read, The Earth

is the Lords and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein. Is not everything we have agi from God? The Apostle Paul writes to the Chris ans at Corinth, What hast thou that thou didst not

receive? (I Cor. 4:7) Every Chris an knows that the answer to this ques on is, nothing. God has given useverything we have, even life, itself. Because all that we have and all that we are belong to God, we do notspend our me, our strength and our money to please ourselves, but to please God.

What does this mean? Specifi cally, how can we live to please God? Certainly, God wants us to spend part

of our me, talent and resources on ourselves and our families. God has given us our lives and expects usto enjoy them in Gods service. God also wants us to give for the needs both physical and spiritual of

    others.

How can we best do this? By giving to our church and community. Christ founded the church to preach

to the world and to minister to the needy, in Gods Name. Whenever we give to the church, we are doingthis work for Christ. We give to the church because that is what God wants us to do with our money.

Remember that it is not ours, but Gods; we are simply the caretakers.

How much, then, should we give to the church? The New Testament off ers several answers to thisques on. When Zacchaeus, the dishonest tax collector, became a Chris an, he told Jesus that he would

give half of his wealth to feed the poor (Luke 19:1-10). When Mary of Bethany realized that Jesus wassoon to be crucifi ed, she bought the most expensive gi she could fi nd to give to him (John 12:1-8). WhenBarnabas, the Levite from Cyprus, became a Chris an, he sold all the land that he owned and brought

the money to the Apostles (Acts 4:36-37). The ac on of these individuals was diff erent, and yet each wasgiving their money in a way that was pleasing to God. How can we be sure that our gi s are pleasing to

God? Here is a sugges on: Pray about your giving. When the off ering basket is passed in church, imaginethat it is Jesus who is holding it. Put into it what you would not be ashamed for Him to see. Consider the

Biblical standard of the the. All people are caretakers. Nothing belongs to us, everything belongs to God.

    Levi cus 25:1 - 13 (NIV), Luke 4:18 - 19 (KJV)

January Levi cus: 25:1010Consecrate the fi ieth year and proclaim

liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants.

It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to

return to your family property and to your own

    clan.

February: Levi cus 25:11The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai,

March Levi cus 25:22Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When

you enter the land I am going to give you, the

land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD.

April Levi cus 25:33For six years sow your fi elds, and for six years

prune your vineyards and gather their crops.

    May Levi cus 25:4-5

4But in the seventh year the land is to have ayear of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD. Do

not sow your fi elds or prune your vineyards.5Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the

grapes of your untended vines. The land is to

    have a year of rest.

June Luke 4:18-1918The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he

hath anointed me to preach the gospel

to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-

hearted, to preach deliverance to the cap ves,

and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at

liberty them that are bruised, 19To preach the

    acceptable year of the Lord.

July Levi cus 25:6-76Whatever the land yields during the sabbath

year will be food for youfor yourself, your

of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout

    your land.

October Levi cus: 25:11-1211The fi ieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do

not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or

harvest the untended vines. 12 For it is a jubilee

and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken

    directly from the fi elds.

November Levi cus 25:1313In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to
