SHELL U.K.R2R FCCU REVAMP Project

STANLOW Complex Elsmere Port

In 1993 Shell UK awarded Flexider a contractworth 1.000.000,00USD to supply the newexpansion joints for the major revamp of theFCCU in STANLOW Complex-Elsmere Port.

The total work scope included 9 expansionjoints of significant size and incorporating thelatest e.j. design concepts:§ 1 off Spent Cat. Standpipe ND 1100§ 1 off Regen. Cat. Standipipe ND 1250§ 2 off Recirc. Cat. Standpipe ND 900§ 1 off Regen. Overhead line§ 1 off Double Gimbal and ND 1850§ 1 off Hinged ND 1850§ 4 off Secondary Separator ND 200§ 1 off Third stage separator ND 1500

Cold shell construction was used for theprocess expansion joints, meanwhile, all ofthem were equipped with ply testable bellowsfor 100% redunancy. ND 1100 Spent Catalyst Standpipe Expansion Joint

For the first time in the FCC applicationsbellows sections of the expansion jointswere provided of an electrical tracingsystem to maintain bellows surfacetemperature above dew point duringstart-up and shut-down operations.

Both external insulation of these bellowsand adjacent piping on the cold siderequired a lot of design attentionbecause of concern about keepingbellows area hot enough to avoidcondensation.

Parallely, same attention was given tooptimize the interaction of the variousinsulation layers:

a. Inside blanketingb. Outside blanketingc. Insulation blanketing for the

heating sandwich provided toavoid dispersions.

Vis a vis of the type of equipment, it wasdecided by Flexider to carry out aperformance test to verify the heatingcapacity of the trace heating sandwichand temperature distribution.

To carry out this test, a burner was hiredwith relevant gas tank.

One end of the joint was insulated, partiallyblinded and the burner connected at the inletside to blow hot air at 720°C. Test wasdivided in two phases: one of 18 hours andthe second of 27.

This test worked out a profitable experience toFlexider and built positive bases to thedevelopment of a simpler heating systemthough with same capability.

Installation of control panels forelectrical trace heating on exp.joints

This system works out finally as the

suitable barrier against condensation on

bellows surfaces of sulphur based acids

typical of refinery atmosphere.

The tight cooperation with Foster

Wheeler has brought to the best end

result of this large project.
