Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones

Gospel’s brightest icon has once again inserted himself among the coveted class of firsts making history at his beloved alma mater. Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones’ historic gift spanning his musical legacy of more than 30 years was simply his way of giving back to the institution that gave so much to him. That gesture of generosity to Tennessee State University has landed him in a very special donor club – the William J. Hale Society.

This distinguished society is the highest level of giving recognized by the university and is reserved for contributions totaling more than $1 million. This society is named in honor of the first president of Tennessee State University – Dr. William J. Hale. Like Jones, Hale’s commitment and passion for TSU is clearly seen through his work, generosity and desire to build and expand on the university’s success.

For years, Jones has given of his time, talents and treasures. His recent philanthropic efforts will positively impact the lives of future TSU students in a meaningful way, and will undoubtedly contribute to the institution’s educational enrichment as scholars, historians, artists, musicians, filmmakers and others interested in the roots and diversity of gospel music turn to this unique, one-of-a-kind collection housed at Tennessee State University.

Valued at more than $6 million, his donation to TSU is complete with music, production and memorabilia not only documenting the rise of gospel music as a popular music form, but is expected to become an invaluable academic resource and financial benefit for the university for years to come.

Jones was honored by TSU during its largest event of the year — Homecoming. The recognition was bestowed on Thursday, November 5, 2010 at the President’s Society Luncheon designed to thank donors who make contributions at a level of $1,000 or more. Jones was saluted as the inaugural member of the William J. Hale Society. As part of his induction, he was presented with an original portrait of the old “A” Building, now known as the Humanities Building, painted by renowned artist Michael McBride.

Jones’ work in the gospel music industry has made him undeniably one it’s most important contributors and visionaries. His weekly gospel show — Bobby Jones Gospel — remains the longest running program on cable television, and has been credited for nearly single-handedly jumpstarting cable’s Black Entertainment Television or BET. Additionally, his ingenuity and passion for helping others has helped launch the careers of dozens of gospel artists, including megastars such as Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams and Mary Mary, to name a few.

A 1959 graduate of Tennessee State University, Jones’ earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and a doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University. He also spent 17 years serving as a faculty member in the College of Education at TSU. In 1999, he was Grand Marshal for the university’s Homecoming celebration and returned in 2006 as the summer Commencement speaker. In 2009, he celebrated his 50th class reunion becoming a “Golden Vintager.”

Sharon Smith Banks (’73) never bites her tongue when it comes to her beloved alma mater. She fondly recalls the positive influences Tennessee State University had on her life and is now giving back to the institution that gave so much to her.

As the current director of new student programs and an adjunct professor at West Virginia State University, Banks understands the challenges of funding a college education – both from personal and professional experiences.

As a first generation college graduate, Banks has focused her attention on helping those students who fall in the same category — specifically the freshmen. She established the Sharon Smith Banks General Scholarship Fund from a life insurance policy. The scholarship fund is designed to help first-time freshmen, who maintain a 2.5 GPA or better, gain solid footing in their pursuit of higher education and will assist with books and travel opportunities for students.

“My parents attended college, but never graduated, so I became the first college graduate in my family,” Banks said, adding that her sister soon followed as a 1978 graduate of

TSU. “Everyday I encourage students by letting them know they can succeed.”

Banks said TSU was always her first choice. While a student, she was actively engaged on campus being initiated into the Alpha Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., participating with the T.E. Poag Players and serving as Miss Senior.

“My fondest memory while at TSU was having Homecoming on Thanksgiving Day. Everybody would dress up in their finest. The camaraderie was great, the football team always won and Thanksgiving Day dinner would be prepared and served in the student cafeteria immediately after the game.”

She said tuition increases are making it much more difficult to achieve the dream of higher education, and providing support to ease some of the financial hardships of students at her alma mater is just one way she can help.

“I believe God allows you to do what’s best for the whole and for me this is the right thing to do.”

For several years, Tennessee State University alumna Mary Carver-Patrick (’69) initiated conversations with Michelle Viera, assistant vice president of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, about how she could support her alma mater long-term. That conversation turned into action when Carver-Patrick made the decision to leave a legacy through the establishment of the Mary Carver-Patrick Scholarship Endowment.

By naming the TSU Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, she empowered the university to use this planned gift according to her defined criteria to benefit Tennessee State University students long after she is gone.

“Since I’ve had such a hands-on experience at TSU, I’ve learned from the number of students purged from semester-to-semester for lack of a few dollars, that it was critical for me to give in a way that would help students after my transition,” Carver-Patrick said. “In addition to contributing as needed today, I felt I could do my part in alleviating future financial hardships that will be experienced by some students by taking out an endowment in this manner.”

The terms of her gift centered on funding support for TSU juniors and seniors with a proven academic track record and need.

“I believe once you reach your junior or senior year, you have shown a commitment that you want to complete your education,” she said. “I don’t want to see any capable student at this level be short $1,000, $500 or even $100 in being able to fund their tuition and risk the possibility of being purged due to such low amounts considering today’s cost of tuition. I wanted to be sure that I could help a situation like that, if possible.”

Carver-Patrick said initiating a planned gift was relatively easy, and provided her with an

opportunity to give back in a way that contributes to the future advancement of TSU and its students. She added that while this option may not work for all alumni of the institution, there are multiple ways and opportunities for them to give back something.

“My one wish for Tennessee State University today is that every alumnus gives at least $100 to the university per year – no amount is too small. If every person who has ever attended TSU, at one given time, would simply step up and become a consistent giver each year, it would make such a huge difference for our students and university.”

Carver-Patrick, a retired educator who earned her B.S. and M.Ed. degrees from Tennessee State, learned early about the importance of giving back to others from her parents. In addition to her generous financial gifts, she has also given unselfishly of her time and talents volunteering with the Office of Alumni Relations, assisting with fundraising initiatives, organizing the Ralph Boston Golf Tournament, serving as a national board officer for the Tennessee State University National Alumni Association and serving on the university’s Homecoming Steering Committee.

“My parents always gave freely to friends and family,” she said. “Although I was an only child, they wanted to ensure I didn’t grow up to be selfish. TSU is in one of its most critical stages that I have known the university to be in. The life of TSU depends on funding and students enrolling and without either of those the institution will not be viable.”

Giving comes natural to Mary Carver-Patrick

When Nigerian-native Chika Chimezie’s family made the trek from New York to Nashville following her senior year of high school, she not only had to focus her attention on getting acclimated to a new city but also finding a college that would fit her aspirations for a career in business.

Chimezie’s search led her to Tennessee State University.

But once she arrived to TSU the next hurdle became figuring out how to pay for her college education.

With a strong academic record, Chimezie became one of the students to benefit from several academic-based scholarships. During the 2009-2010 year, she was awarded a $1,200 scholarship through the College of Business Alumni and Friends Scholarship Fund and a $1,500 Endowment for Educational Excellence Scholarship. This past year, through a newly established corporate partnership, she received a $2,500 College of Business/Volkswagen scholarship.

As part of receiving the scholarship from Volkswagen, Chimezie said she also had an opportunity to meet the vice president of the Chattanooga, Tenn. plant and learn more about the company’s operations.

“They know what they are looking for in students and future workers,” she said. “Corporate support is very important and I am so thankful for Volkswagen providing financial resources to help TSU students. It shows support of not only the school, but it provides opportunities for students to meet executives.”

She continued, “Funding my education would have been difficult without the support these scholarships provided to me. It meant a lot to me because the economy

was in such a bad place at the time. I didn’t know where I

was going to get the money. It really was a blessing for me.”

Now in her junior yearin 2012, the Business Administration major with a concentration in E-Supply Chain Management, is working to be among those graduates who receive

degrees from TSU during the university’s centennial

celebration year. As part of her academic requirements,

Chimezie will also intern with another TSU College of Business

corporate partner, Walmart, working in the company’s distribution

center. After graduating, she plans to continue her education by pursing a MBA.

Since arriving to TSU, Chimezie has been actively engaged in the campus. She has been a recipient of the College of Business Presidential Award Program, is a member of the University Honors Program, and is one of the founding officers for the TSU chapter of the National Society for Collegiate Scholars, a national honors society headquartered in D.C., open to any student with a 3.5 GPA or higher. The honors society focuses on exposing students to internships, scholarship and leadership opportunities.

“I was attracted to Tennessee State University because I learned of its strong business program,” she said. “It has one of the best supply chain programs, and that is what drove me to the university. My experiences at TSU have helped me to grow.”

Scholarship allows business student to manage bottomline: education

Gregory Coates, Jr. never experienced problems with funding his education, but for some reason his last year of school brought a set of financial challenges he wasn’t expecting. Perhaps it was the economic climate or a retooling of financial aid funds, but whatever it was Coates knew he needed to find resources that would help him stay in school and graduate.

An honors student majoring in biology, the hopeful-graduate began researching additional scholarship opportunities. He said he applied for several and was pleased when word reached him he had received one that would pull him through his senior year.

Coates received $2,500 from The Cecil E. Crump/Clementine L. Hamilton Foundation and The Links, Incorporated, Music City Chapter Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student pursing a four-year degree with a demonstrated financial need and a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA. Ideal recipients demonstrate considerable promise in their respective field, an interest in and service to underserved communities and perform as a high achiever and maintain high moral character.

“I never had a problem financially until my last year of school,” Coates said. “I guess I didn’t qualify for as much [financial aid], but this scholarship allowed me to finish up my last semester because I didn’t have the money and wasn’t really sure where it was going to come from. This scholarship was right on time for me.”

Without the financial assistance of this scholarship, Coates said he might not have been able to obtain the title of college graduate in 2010. He added that he clearly understands the value and importance of giving back and plans to make giving to the university part of his commitment after he completes his graduate studies. A native of Columbus, Ga., he is currently, a physician’s assistant at the Medical School of Georgia, and has plans to

start in the school’s P.A. program (equivalent to a Master in Medicine degree) in May.

“I think it is very important to give back,” Coates said. “I had a great experience at TSU and had internships and opportunities that really were a benefit to my education and professional development.”

He continued, “If you are able to give back to Tennessee State University, then you should because it’s all about giving others the same opportunity that you were afforded.”

A staunch advocate for TSU, Coates is a ready ambassador for the university talking up the great academic, leadership and service programs offered to recruit other top-quality students.

“My little brother graduates from high school next year and is definitely looking at attending TSU,” he said. “It’s a great institution and if you are looking for a great education, I highly recommend TSU.”

Coates says

Scholarship was right on time

With all the success Alvin Mar-ley (’68) has o b t a i n e d through his

military and financial services career, he has never forgot-ten the role that Tennessee State University played in shap-ing opportunities for him. Because of the valuable experi-ences he discovered at Tennessee State, today he continues to do his part in giving others a chance at the same oppor-tunities he had.

“I’ve been a long-time giver to TSU, but as I became more successful in my career, I decided to step it up a bit,” Marley said.

As one of the few historically black colleges and uni-versity’s (HBCUs) offering an Air Force ROTC program in the country, Vicksburg, Miss. native Marley turned his attention to TSU following in his brother Frank’s foot-steps, who found Tennessee State University just two years before.

Marley immediately took to TSU when he came to the campus in 1964 to major in mathematics, describing the university as a “melting pot of students.” Along with his participation in the AFROTC, he soon joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

“I really liked the campus, and the education opportunities,” he said. “I enjoyed the mathematics curriculum and thought TSU offered a great program. The academics and socialization at TSU – it was a total experience.”

Marley was eventually promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in U.S. Air Force and, after leaving TSU, spent more than three years stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, a research and development base in Florida, as a mathematics analyst. Marley’s love for learning continued while in the air force leading him to take a non-credit course at a junior college related to the stock market.

In 1971, Marley left the air force and received a fellowship through the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, an organization whose mission is to speed

entry of minorities, particularly African-Americans, into positions of management. He also earned a master’s degree in 1973 from Indiana University.

After obtaining additional education and finding a newfound career interest, Marley began working with the First National Bank of Chicago/UBS as an analyst. He would eventually become a portfolio manager selecting stocks, a career path he would successfully navigate for 38 years. Today, he is a principal with Lombardia Capital Partners, a 25-employee minority-owned firm managing $2.7 billion in institutional funds with offices in Pasadena, Calif. and Chicago.

“We [alumni] have received a quality education from TSU,” he continued. “It’s a very prominent, urban university with a wide variety of people who come. Being that we benefitted from TSU, we should be compelled to give back.”

Marley, in conjunction with the Chicago Alumni Chapter of the Tennessee State University National Alumni Association, established the Chicago Chapter/Alvin Marley Scholarship Endowment Fund in 1998. With an initial start-up of $30,000, the endowment has now grown to more than $100,000. The funds help students from the Chicago metropolitan area.

“There is plenty of competition out there for students and others need to see us [alumni] give,” Marley said, who served as president of the Chicago Alumni Chapter from 1975-76. “We need to help our alma mater in these uncertain times because students need assistance.”

The renewable scholarship award is generally awarded in a sum of $1,000 to each recipient who has demonstrated good academic progress and a need for financial assistance. Nearly $10,000 has been awarded to-date.

“We are in a very competitive environment and world, and without our gifts, it limits the university’s ability to serve,” he said. “Giving is the right thing to do. We should be very proud of 100 years and what TSU has given to us, and others, so that we maintain our traditions of excellence and continue to be a source of quality education for the next century and many more years to come.”

More than 26 years ago, the Washington, D.C. Alumni Chapter (WDC) decided in addition to social activities, it was time to initiate a plan that would provide support for students to attend Tennessee State University as part of its mission.

Under the leadership of Harry W. Taylor, former president of the WDC, the chapter crafted an initiative to support out-of-state tuition for a student, for four years, from the Wash-ington D.C. area. The chapter’s goal, to the extent possible, would be to select a student who would not be able to at-tend college without its help, and that the selected student should be the first in his/her family to attend college.

“Our initial objective was to provide funds to meet our goal,” Taylor said. “The fundraising process was a solicitation of direct contributions culminating in a victory scholarship dance.”

Eventually, the chapter began to take a more strategic approach to raising funds for the endowment. As part of the solicitation process some chapter members, who were executives in private firms, began having donations matched by their firms. This proved helpful in growing the endowment.

“The Foundation set-up two accounts for the chapter: an endowment account to receive funds set aside to grow our endowment base, and a restricted account to hold

funds needed for disbursement to cover tuition and book payments,” said Leonard Stephens, president of the Tennessee State University National Alumni Association and member of the WDC. “The initial goal was to grow the endowment to the point of using the earnings to award scholarships annually for

out-of-state student tuition for one student. At the time of the establishment of the endowment, earnings from $25,000 would fund a year of out-of-state tuition.”

In the 26 years since the Washington, D.C. Chapter established the endowment, out-of-state tuition has risen substantially faster than inflation. This has resulted in less awards being provided on an annual basis; however, under the leadership of current president, Chandra Champion (’03), the chapter remains committed to maintaining the endowment and supporting as many students as possible.

“If a chapter provides multi-year scholarships an endowment provides a good method to ensure scholarship funds over a number of years that the chapter is committed to a specific student.

“We will continue our objective of changing the lives of deserving individuals by enabling them to attend Tennessee State University that they probably could not do otherwise,” Stephens said.
